On this episode of The Beautiful Idea, we speak with long-running journalist and researcher Chris Mathias on his new book, "To Catch a Fascist: The Fight to Expose the Radical Right."In the book, Mathias profiles multiple antifascist researchers and activists, shinning a light on grassroots opposition to fascism and the everyday people that put themselves in harms way to stand up to violent white supremacists.During our discussion, we talk about several of the people profiled in the book, as well as how many organizers and researchers are now turning their attention on ICE. We also talk about how the GOP has consumed much of the existing white nationalist movement, what happens to fascist street formations with Trump in power, and how journalists, communities, and organizers can respond.https://bsky.app/profile/letsgomathias.bsky.socialhttps://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026/jan/30/antifa-unmasking-iceFollow Chris and his reporting here on BlueSky and be sure to check out this piece at the Guardian about how antifascist sleuths are now turning their attention to unmasking ICE agents.https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/To-Catch-a-Fascist/Christopher-Mathias/9781668034767

Why the Democratic Party’s promise of “restoration” misses the mark; how decades of economic crises reshaped American politics, and why returning to center means chasing a target that keeps moving right. One side built a durable monument to white nationalist capitalism while the other became its world-class pit crew. The fight isn’t about competence or committee chairs. It’s about whether Democrats can offer an actual vision for the future instead of just patching up the damage Republicans leave behind. On this very special episode we dig into the takeover of the Southern Baptist convention and analyze how it is a preview our current right wing take over of the country as well as its juicy Left Behind connections. This should be a niche topic that folks hear about, are aghast by and move on from but unfortunately taking over a branch of a Baptist denomination was only the beginning and, even more unfortunately, was only trial run of their tactics. Radical right-wing politics is commonly understood as a cry of the “left behind” - working-class voters who lost out in the transition to a post-industrial, services-based, and globalized economy. Philip Rathgeb, a political economist at the University of Edinburgh, challenges this view in How the Radical Right Has Changed Capitalism and Welfare in Europe and the USA (Oxford University Press, 2024). Rathgeb joins Chris Maisano on the latest episode of the SLU podcast Reinventing Solidarity to talk about his book, what differentiates the Republican Party from its right-wing counterparts elsewhere, and how his research might inform the efforts of people working to reinvent solidarity in the current moment.
Give to help Chris make Truce Dark money is a problem in American politics and religion. What is it? Untraceable money that often comes from big donors, which is channelled through non-profits to hide the identity of the donor. This money is then able to back causes that may or may not be positive. The Council for National Policy is an organization in the pipeline for Christian dark money. It finances groups like the Heritage Foundation, Focus on the Family, pro-life groups, Turning Point USA, and more. They also coordinate language around denial of climate change, COVID, and election results. Their first president was Tim LaHaye, but he is just the tip of the iceberg. On episode 253, we welcome Christopher Mathias to discuss the meaning of fascism and what ANTIFA is, fascism's ideological roots in greed and domination, the Charlottesville protests, fascist masking and the threat of being charmed by appearances, whether we owe it to fascism to allow for open debates, whether fascists care about finding the truth, if it's possible to differentiate between conservatives and fascists at this point, and why members of ANTIFA would disagree with being labeled extremists. Christopher Mathias is a journalist covering the far right. Previously a senior reporter at HuffPost, he's done work for the Guardian, MSNBC, Zeteo, and WNYC. On Trump and Rubio, Venezuela and Cuba. Writer Juan David Rojas talks to Alex and Lee about the abduction of Maduro, what next for Venezuela, and Trump's "hemispheric" foreign policy. What is the Trump administration's policy toward Latin America? Is the attack on Venezuela a war for oil? Or a war vs 'narcoterrorism'? What are the internal divisions in Venezuela, and could it fall into civil war? What are the armed groups in the country? Who's calling the shots in Washington: neocons or paleocons? Demonized by Republicans and Democrats alike, a myth emerged around “antifa” during Donald Trump's first term. But few understand the dangerous work antifa does to disrupt and unmask the latest crop of white supremacists or listened when antifa sounded the alarm about these white supremacists taking positions of power. But, this underground network of militant anti-fascists is determined to stop the rising tide of fascism in America, and does so risking life andlimb. In our latest we talk with journalist, and author of the newly released "To Catch a Fascist: The Fight to Expose the Radical Right," Chris Mathias about his new book, antifa and the far right. On Trump & radical right ideology. Jean-François Drolet, a leading researcher into the 'World of the Right', talks to Alex and Lee about Donald Trump's coveting of Greenland, and puts the move into its ideological context. What is the paleoconservative worldview, how is it different from the neoconservative one, and which is more influential in the Trump regime? How does paleoconservatism translate into actual foreign policy? What's in Trump's new National Security Strategy? Are we back to a 19th century-style 'spheres of influence' arrangement? Does the radical right's foreign policy lead back to a populist kind of isolationism – or to a 'civilisational nationalism'? Will Trump solidify the transatlantic alliance, or generate a rift? The imposition of Communist ideology was a misfortune for millions in Eastern Europe, but never for Dennis Deletant. Instead, it drew him to Romania. The renowned historian's association with the country and its people dates back to 1965, when he first visited. Since then, Romania has made Dennis appreciate the value of shrewd dissimulation, in the face of the state's gross intrusion in the life of the individual. This vivid memoir charts his first-hand experience of the Communist era, coloured by the early 1970s surveillance of his future wife Andrea; his contacts with dissidents; and his articles and BBC World Service broadcasts, which led to his being declared persona non grata in 1988. In Search of Romania (Hurst, 2022) also considers how life went on under dictatorship, even if it was largely mapped out by the regime. How did individual citizens negotiate the challenges placed in their path? How important was the political police, the Securitate, in maintaining compliance? How did dissent towards the regime manifest? How did all this affect the moral compass of the individual? Why did utopia descend into dystopia under Ceaușescu? And how has his legacy influenced the difficult transition to democracy since the collapse of Communism? In this episode, Jacob analyzes how conspiracy theory culture has grown across the political spectrum, using the recent Dave Smith vs. Seth Dillon exchange on Piers Morgan as a launchpad. Jacob reflects on the tension Christians face in a world overwhelmed by information, propaganda, and the rapid spread of mistrust toward institutions. Looking closely at foreign policy failures, government deception, and cultural tribalism, he explains why skepticism can be healthy — yet warns against replacing one blind trust with another. The conversation also explores how the rise of AI, deepfakes, and hyperpolarized online spaces makes discerning truth harder than ever, especially for Christians seeking to live faithfully in an empire of disinformation.Jacob then addresses how blowback, identity politics, and a broken media environment fuel radicalization on the right. Using examples like Nick Fuentes, Israel-Palestine debates, and reactions to Charlie Kirk's death, he explains how dishonest narratives — whether from governments, commentators, or influencers — strengthen the worst impulses in conspiracy theory culture. Instead of demonizing people or censoring them, Jacob argues for honest dialogue, principled skepticism, and Christian integrity. The episode closes with a call for the church to resist grievance-based politics and pursue truth, peace, and a kingdom-centered worldview in the midst of cultural chaos.Full Episode Notes at BiblicalAnarchyPodcast.comThe Biblical Anarchy Podcast is part of the Christians For Liberty Network, a project of the Libertarian Christian Institute. Center-Left's Struggle Against Radical RightNick Cohen talks to The Guardian's chief political correspondent Rafael Behr discuss the failure of the Western centre-left to effectively counter the rise of the radical right, using examples from the United States and Britain. They highlighted the Democrats' inability to stop Trump's return to power and Labour's struggles under Keir Starmer despite a significant majority. The discussion touched on the fragmentation of the centre-left vote into Greens and socialists, which has weakened their ability to present a unified front against their opponents.Rafael's chilling warning of the UK's political directionRafael is very pessimistic about the future as a result of Labour's ability to fight the Radical Right: "it is increasingly my view that the evidence that we need - historically - to track the trajectory of where a lot of the salient politics that we're in at the moment leads is into the abyss, right? Although we don't know exactly what is in that abyss, we know that, you know, nationalism that is on this sort of self-reinforcing, spinning outward ever into, increasingly extreme versions of itself leads to really, really dark places..."Rafael adds, "the best arguments we have against extreme nationalism are, for fuck's sake, read some history! Look at who these people are! Just, you know, pay attention to who, what these people are, what they're saying, who their friends are. What a bunch of nasty, angry, racist, thieving, kleptocratic, psycho self-serving, venal bastards they actually are! Look at that. Just look at them in the face! Look in the face of the Gorgon! Be petrified and don't vote for it. Right. And that argument, which I feel is, should be incredibly compelling, isn't working."Read all about it!Rafael's recent book Politics: A Survivor's Guide: How to stay engaged without getting enraged is published by W.F.Howes Ltd and available at Amazon and in all good bookshops.Support the show You can also read his wonderful columns in the Guardian. This episode is the second in our occasional series on important, controversial, or unusually relevant conservative texts from the recent past. Here we take up Charles Murray's 2012 book, Coming Apart: The State of White America, 1960-2010. With its focus on the ascendence of a new "cognitive elite," cultural divides, and the pathologies afflicting working and lower class whites, the book might seem prophetic of the Age of Trump — but the reality is more complicated. Murray's oversights, it turns out, are as interesting as his insights. We walk listeners through Murray's account of how America "came apart," take the test he provides to see how thick our class/cultural bubbles are, then rip into the moralizing prescriptions with which he concludes the book. Along the way we discuss Murray as an emblematic success story of the right-wing welfare state and intellectual pipeline, revisit his obsession with race and IQ, and more!Sources:Charles Murray, Coming Apart: The State of White America, 1960-2010 (2012)— Human Accomplishment: The Pursuit of Excellence in the Arts and Sciences, 800 B.C. to 1950 (2003)— Losing Ground: American Social Policy, 1950-1980 (1984)Jason DeParle, "Daring Research or 'Social Science Pornography'? This episode of Across The Margin: The Podcast presents an interview with journalist, author, and an acknowledged expert in American right-wing extremism, David Neiwert. Neiwert has appeared on Anderson Cooper 360, CNN Newsroom, and The Rachel Maddow Show and is the Pacific Northwest correspondent for the Southern Poverty Law Center. His work has appeared at Mother Jones, The Washington Post, MSNBC.com, and many other publications. His previous books include Of Orcas and Men: What Killer Whales Can Teach Us, And Hell Followed With Her: Crossing the Dark Side of the American Border (NationBooks: Winner of the International Latino Book Award for General Nonfiction), and Alt-America: The Rise of The Radical Right in The Age of Trump. He has won a National Press Club award for Distinguished Online Journalism and his latest book — The Age of Insurrection: The Radical Right's Assault On American Democracy — is the focus of this episode. From a smattering of ominous right-wing compounds in the Pacific Northwest in the 1970s, to the shocking January 6, 2021 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, America has seen the culmination of a long-building war on Democracy being waged by a fundamentally violent and antidemocratic far-right movement that unironically calls itself the “Patriot” movement. So how did we get here? In his book, The Age of Insurrection, award-winning journalist Neiwert — who been following the rise of extremist groups since the late 1970s, when he was a young reporter in Idaho — explores how the movement was built over decades, how it was set aflame by Donald Trump and his cohorts, and how it will continue to attack American Democracy for the foreseeable future. In this episode host Michael Shields and David Neiwert get to the bottom of exactly how dangerous the radical right is at this juncture of American history. They break down the components of Trump's Army while pondering how extremism has gone mainstream in a variety of ways. They talk about Steve Bannon's role in spreading authoritarianism internationally, how the police have been infiltrated by the radical right, how organized the alt-right attacks are on democratic institutions at every level including local, state, and federal targets, and so much more. You might have heard of the new term: “woke right.” It's the idea that the illiberalism that has swallowed the progressive left—what we often refer to as “wokeness”—has come for the right. Here's how we think about the dynamic: Over the past two decades the woke left said: “Everything is taboo”—our Founding Fathers, the idea that men and women are different, the idea that wearing hoop earrings is verboten because it's cultural appropriation, and on and on. Naturally, people got fed up. Including people like Bari. Then some on the right exploited that anger, and said: “Nothing is taboo”—not words like “gay” or “retarded,” but also not “Holocaust revisionism” or “white nationalism.” Some of this dynamic is playing out in the headlines: The woke left changed Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples' Day. Then the White House changed the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America—the Trump administration even temporarily banned the Associated Press from the White House press room after it continued to publish “the Gulf of Mexico.” When the woke left tried to change the character of our nation's founding and take down statues of Winston Churchill and George Washington, the right took down a description of Jackie Robinson's military service that was on the Department of Defense website because it was too DEI-coded. On that note, the White House also recently said they would conduct a review of Smithsonian exhibitions to make sure they align with American ideals. And when the woke left said trans, disabled, people of color are the most oppressed class in America, the woke right says white, Christian men are actually at the bottom of the totem pole—creating a new form of identity politics, in right-wing language. It's a fascinating and alarming dynamic. The same phenomenon on each side of the political spectrum. We would argue wokeness on the left went totally mainstream. Rod Dreher is one of the rare voices calling attention to the illiberalism on the right—and the danger it poses. He says the right has a unique opportunity to stop this woke impulse before it metastasizes. Rod is a contributing editor at The American Conservative. He's the author of many books including his new bestseller, Live Not by Lies: A Manual for Christian Dissidents. And he most recently wrote in our pages “The Radical Right Is Coming for Your Sons.” Bari recently sat down with him to discuss why the woke right tolerates antisemitism and white nationalism, why this movement is appealing to men specifically, if it is fair to equate the woke right with the woke left, why he himself is not even comfortable with the term woke right—we'll get into that in the conversation—and what happens if this impulse on the right goes mainstream. This past year, what feels like a hundred in Trump years, Gaslit Nation listeners have asked the same question: How did we get here? The answer, though deeply unsettling, is vital to understand. It's the story of a 40-year campaign waged by far-right Christian nationalists, Big Oil, and corporate power to undermine our democracy. To help us all make sense of this crisis moment, as a firehose of corruption and racist disinformation blasts from the White House, we've created a special “Best of Gaslit Nation” episode. This powerful montage connects the dots with help from some of the most tenacious experts sounding the alarm. Each voice reveals a piece of the puzzle: how the Reagan revolution, Supreme Court corruption, and dark money led us to this breaking point, unleashing Trump as their Frankenstein monster. But this isn't just about history: it's about action. The Gaslit Nation Action Guide is your toolkit for resisting, rebuilding, and reclaiming our democracy. The darkness we face cannot withstand our collective light. So stand up. Be defiant. Shine bright. This chapter isn't the end: it's our call to build something better, together. Author, performer, podcaster, interviewer and host Nelson Aspen has covered a lot of ground in his highly prolific career, but he continues to return to one spot in particular, figuratively speaking: 41°43'32" N, 49°56'49" W...better known as the location of the most well known and intensely chronicled sea-faring vessel in history: White Star Line's RMS Titanic. For Nelson, his interest in the famed ship seems fated - He's felt a lifelong affinity with Titanic passenger, Milton Long! And Nelson shares Milton's story in a new historical fantasy/semi-autobiographical/reincarnation novel, Kindred Spirits: A Titanic Tale. We know that Milton met fellow passenger, Jack Thayer aboard Titanic. They were together as the ship went down. One lived. One perished. Is it a gay Titanic love story? Historical records point to the reality that a budding affection between the two men was developing at sea. As the ship met her fate, only women and children were permitted in lifeboats which were being sent into the water half full. Their only hope was to jump. Jack launched himself into the water and balanced on an overturned collapsable lifeboat for hours before his rescue. Milton slid down the now nearly vertical banister and was sucked beneath the ship where he died.Titanic and Milton remained with Jack for long after the tragic events of April 14, 1912. Nelson's book builds on a metaphysical premise that allows readers to examine a unique juxtaposition between the constraints of Edwardian morals and the life-affirming spirit of the contemporary LGBTQ community. We discuss the documentary 'Ship of Dreams: Titanic Movie Diaries' which Nelson worked on with Alexandra Boyd, his co-host on the Titanic Talk podcast, which captures the extent of the impact the 1997 movie made on all who were involved with the production.Nelson shares his thoughts on why modern audiences continue to gravitate to the liner's ill-fated maiden voyage, his thoughts on collecting Titanic artifacts, why no single person or entity can shoulder the blame for the tragic event, plus where he's heading on his upcoming appearances and the latest installment in his semi-autobiographical series, Dancing Between The Raindrops! In recommendations--Fritz: Netflix Series, The ResidenceWeezy: The Dark Money Game on HBOPath Points of Interest:Nelson AspenKindred Spirits: A Titanic TaleNelson Aspen Amazon PageShip of DreamsTitanic Talk PodcastNelson Aspen on YouTubeNelson Aspen on InstagramNelson Aspen on XNelson Aspen on TikTokThe Residence-NetflixThe Dark Money GameDark Money: The Hidden History of the Billionaires Behind the Rise of the Radical Right by Jane Meyer
This week, we're revisiting a critical conversation we had back in 2020 with author and historian Nancy MacLean, in which she exposes how today's threats to democracy were decades in the making. Based on her groundbreaking book Democracy in Chains, MacLean traces how Nobel Prize-winning economist James Buchanan worked with billionaire donors to rig the rules of government to expand corporate power and protect extreme wealth. From public choice theory to voter suppression, this episode reveals the coordinated strategy to undermine democracy—and explains why understanding it is essential to fighting back. Nancy MacLean is an award-winning historian and the William H. Chafe Distinguished Professor of History and Public Policy at Duke University. Her book, Democracy in Chains: The Deep History of the Radical Right's Stealth Plan for America was a National Book Award finalist and winner of the Los Angeles Times Book Prize. This week we go all the way back to the beginning to ruminate about what motivated us to start the podcast in the dark days of the pandemic. We open with a passage from Nancy MacLean's Democracy in Chains that struck a chord with Max. In it MacLean talks about the early days of the nihilistic libertarian society built by Charles Koch who was himself building upon the work of his father in the John Birch Society. Turns out, Koch and the founders of the neoliberal movement were inspired by the organizing principles of Vladimir Lenin. Let that sink in. Episode 236 is the thirteenth in a series of episodes where we begin to explore the radical right groups of the 1960's that clearly had great motive to murder president Kennedy. Emerging, alongside civil rights leaders, as a prime target for ire of white racists, anti-communists, and and a wide variety of other conservative groups, President Kennedy was a a target among them all. This aspect of the assassination and the connection of the radical right is little explored. We started many episodes back, with the story of Joseph Milteer but its rather easy to pull on that string and find much more underneath the covers. Today's episode a bonus episode covering more on the Clinton tie in and the litigation and investigations that defined those moments and the real reason Oswald was in Clinton. Today's episode supplements the two part mini-series on this topic. As a juror, listen to this episode as we tell the real story of why Lee Harvey Oswald's handlers took him to Clinton. Sit back as we explain how the social context of the story in part 1 which takes us all the way back to the House Un-American Committee and the Senate SiSS committee. Both of these government committees were actively investigating subversives at the time and engaged with Guy Bannister and others to help do so. Part 2 ties it all together and tells the story of how the raid at the Southern Conference Education Fund was an integral piece of this puzzle. Part 3 explores the larger Context of the fight in Clinton and why it was the tie in for the radical right and their violent resistance to the voter registration drives that were going on in the day. Clinton was a much larger historical factor than has previously been discussed in the JFK story. The story and explanations in this two part miniseries may be the most plausible explanation yet for what Oswald was doing in Clinton and the next episode 235 presents the details of why this seems so believable. Much of this theory comes from author Jeff Caufield's book entitled General Walker and the Murder of President Kennedy. As the jury, you be the judge of whether this was the real reason Oswald went to Clinton. And then ponder what it means for how Oswald might have been used in Dallas and just who deployed him there... Join us throughout this series on the radical right as we highlight th the nexus of ultra right wing characters that help us understand more intuitively how the radical right may have fit into the picture of the assassination. Characters that advance our understanding of the nexus of connections between a wide array of actors within the radical right. And with this exercise, we show how so many of these connections lead back to New Orleans and Dallas and to particular figures of the radical right including Guy Bannister. A nexus of connections with a common thread of hatred for President Kennedy. Even as early as 1964, rumors and serious concerns over the lone gunman theory and the evidence that might contravene it, were becoming a major concern for the government and the commission. Conspiracy theories were contrary to the government's stated narrative from the very beginning. This real-life story is more fascinating than fiction. No matter whether you are a serious researcher or a casual student, you will enjoy the fact filled narrative and story as we relive one of the most shocking moments in American History. An event that changed the nation and changed the world forever.
Episode 235 is the twelth in a series of episodes where we begin to explore the radical right groups of the 1960's that clearly had great motive to murder president Kennedy. Today's episode is part 2 of a two part miniseries. Part 2 continues to explore the possibility that the radical right deployed Oswald to Clinton and Jackson on a very specific mission to engage in an activity that they knew would be critical to derailing CORE's voter registration drive going on there. Project 2025: A name so boring it must be sinister! Gaslit Nation was early warning about Project 2025. Now people are finally starting to pay attention. Another early warning system is journalist Anne Nelson, the author of Shadow Network: Media, Money, and the Secret Hub of the Radical Right. Nelson covered the conflicts in El Salvador and Guatemala, and won the Livingston Award for best international reporting from the Philippines. She served as the director of the Committee to Protect Journalists, and became the director of the international program at the Columbia School of Journalism, where she created the first curriculum in human rights reporting. This is Nelson's second time on the show. The excellent must-watch documentary Bad Faith, featured on the show in April, was based on her book. We created this special episode that tells you everything you need to know about Project 2025–the decades-long rise of Christian nationalism, backed by Big Oil & Coal to prevent and rollback regulations and turn America into a dictatorship to protect record profits. “The shadow network” has been looking for a strongman for decades, and Trump is their long-awaited strongman to finish the job. This week's bonus show explores the making of Vladimir Putin, featuring Russian mafia expert Olga Lautman and European analyst Monique Camarra of the Kremlin File podcast. Comments from our listeners at the Democracy Defender tier and higher are also shared in the context of the latest on Israel, Palestine, Iran, and more!
