Judge and former Trump Attorney Jim Troupis comes onto the Vicki McKenna Show to talk about his prosecution and the ramifications of it
We'll update the appeal filed Monday by Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul to an order by a Waukesha County judge that could force the state elections commission to take on a massive project that could bring chaos to 2026 elections — all to chase after fraud that has never been shown to exist, despite lots of claims by people who know they have better odds of winning elections if more legal voters have to jump through more hoops. It's Friday which means time Recombobulate The News with Civic Media's Political Editor, Dan Shafer. Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul is not running for governor and a too early poll was released with too early information. Also, we spoke about it earlier this week, but Milwaukee is seeking to implement red light cameras on certain streets and we talk about the implementation and efficacy of those cameras. Then, for Audio Sorbet, we ask the BIG questions and today we want to know: What job would you never do? And not to toot our own horn, but this was a great week, so let's close it out strong with This Shouldn't Be A Thing - Flying High Edition. As always, thank you for listening, texting and calling, we couldn't do this without you! Don't forget to download the free Civic Media app and take us wherever you are in the world! New talks at the state Capitol are being framed as an effort by both Republicans and Democrats to bridge a long disagreement over who should pay for cleanup of sites contaminated by PFAS industrial chemicals. There's really not much to bridge: The divide is over whether to protect industrial polluters. Republicans say state laws should exempt people like farmers who spread industrial sludge that was later found to have harmful PFAS. Democrats agree but want those farmer exemptions narrowly worded so that industries can't be lumped in and push the clean-up costs on taxpayers. We'll talk to Joe Zepecki about that and other topics like the 2026 race for governor, which no longer includes Josh Kaul but might include Mandela Barnes. Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul has announced that he will not run for Governor in 2026, instead focusing on reelection. And a new, very early poll on the Wisconsin Gubernatorial election was release yesterday and the numbers are both telling and baffling. Then, Speaker of the House Mike Johnson is doing his very best to run away from The Epstein Files and the simple duty of swearing in a newly elected congress woman and don't worry, her party affiliation has nothing to do with it. Andra Watkins is a New York Times Best Selling Author and creator of For Such A Time As This on Substack. There was a clear display on Tuesday of the difference between having an attorney general dedicated to public service versus one who's more interested in being a toadie. Wisconsin's Josh Kaul has decided to pursue a third term rather than running for governor. Contrast his work to hold the Trump administration accountable to the juvenile ranting done on Capitol Hill by Pam Bondi, who is supposed to be the top law enforcement officer for the American people but would rather continue her audition to please the man she sees as her boss and benefactor. Today's episode is a must-listen for anyone following the frontlines of conservative politics and policy. Vicki is joined by a dynamic panel of guests who aren't afraid to speak truth to power: Janel Brandtjen dives into the latest developments in election integrity and what's next for grassroots reformers. Matt Kittle from The Federalist breaks down the escalating use of “lawfare” tactics against conservative figures and movements. Marc Morano, a leading voice on climate policy, exposes the latest green agenda overreaches and their real-world consequences. Edmund LaCour, constitutional law expert, offers sharp legal insight into the battles shaping America's judicial future. Michael Lucas brings a cultural lens to the conversation, exploring how media narratives are shifting in 2025. Will Hild, Executive Director of Consumers' Research, sounds the alarm on corporate overreach and the fight to protect consumer freedom.
The GOP-led Wisconsin Legislature fell all over itself to undermine Tony Evers and Josh Kaul after their 2018 election victories, passing laws in a lame-duck session to strip away powers from the incoming governor and attorney general. It took more than six years, but on Tuesday a unanimous Wisconsin Supreme Court started taking steps to let the lawmakers know there are still three co-equal branches of government. It's Friday and the weekend, starts here. Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul had a victory for AmeriCorps, as well as the state against The Felon President. And it looks like the film industry is one step closer to getting help from the state if creators want to make movies here. And it seems the Big Bill For Billionaires couldn't sink lower, just wait, because pets are next. Then, we are joined by Michelle Velasquez Chief Strategy Officer of Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin on how the aforementioned bill is looking to strip away funding for Planned Parenthood via Medicaid. And then if you're looking to get a dog this summer, places like The Wisconsin Humane Society, MADACC and HAWS are all in need of help. Whether it's finding a forever home for your new best friend or fostering, the Humane Society is running a special which makes it very affordable to get a new buddy. We apologize for being tardy to Homeroom today, Class! While we don't have a parent note, we do have trending education news to share with you! Let's focus in, because policy changes are coming fast, loud, and confusing. First, more labor unions representing educators join the AFT in their lawsuit against the federal Department of Education. The lawsuit follows the federal department's release of a Dear Colleague letter on February 14th outlining threats to funding for schools engaged in "DEI" efforts. Through the uncertainty, we agreed that we should focus on the effects, not the bluster. And now we see effects, as the department cancels hundreds of millions of dollars in grants for teacher apprenticeship programs. In response, eight state Attorneys General, including Wisconsin's Josh Kaul, filed suit. Because this isn't how we help students. So, there's a lot here. We urge you to focus past the dogwhistle of "DEI." This is a targeted attack on poor communities and on public schools. We'll be back on Wednesday and Friday with more hopeful podcasts! Congressman Derrick Van Orden is moving to impeach a federal judge who blocked Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency from accessing records. Farm groups are suing Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul. And, it was a big week for state government. The WPR politics team will give us all the details.
On a Valentine's Day edition of "The Dan O'Donnell Show," Dan dives into an ethics complaint against Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul, who sure seems to be taking a bribe from a liberal billionaire to file climate change lawsuits.
It was a busy news week around the state and country this week, here are a number of topics that Civic Media hosts shared how the news affected our communities around across Wisconsin this week. Up first this hour, Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul joins the Dom Salvia Show and cohost for the day Earl Ingram to discuss how and why Wisconsin joined a lawsuit against Donald Trump. In the first hours of his second Presidential term, Trump issued an Executive Order that would strip some born in the United States of citizenship. Of course, that directly violates Section 1 of the 14th Amendment of the Constitution granting citizenship to all those born or naturalized in the US. Hence the lawsuit. In Kaul's words- a disastrous way to start his second term. Then, on Matenaer On Air, Jane and Greg cover the pardons that were issued for everyone who took part in the January 6 insurrection, including those who were charged with violent offenses, on Donald Trumps first day back in the Oval Office. That is even after the administration said it would go over the cases thoroughly and wouldn't seek to pardon those convicted of violent crimes, the show discusses the people from Wisconsin who participated in the event. Up next on this weekend's Spotlight, State Assembly Rep. Francesca Hong (D-Madison) talks to UpNorthNews Radio's Pat Kreitlow about the many issues to be debated during the new session of the Wisconsin Legislature—with a main emphasis on her “Healthy School Meals For All” proposal. Finally, on the Todd Allbaugh Show, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported this week that CBS 58 in Milwaukee fired weather reporter Sam Kuffel for criticizing Elon Musk on her personal social media. While there may have been a legitimate reason to lay her off, the subsequent silence from CBS 58 speaks volumes. The Todd Allbaugh Show discusses this dangerous precedent set very early on in Donald Trump's presidency. If media companies fire people in their weather departments for criticizing somebody who isn't even an elected official, trust in news departments will likely deteriorate even further. Our discussion focuses on how this isn't just a story about a bad warden and staff, this is a bad system that needs to be overhauled. We look at the role of Governor Evers and the Department of Corrections in addressing both the current charges at Waupun and the systemic crisis of failing to address mass incarceration in the state, despite a commitment from Governor Evers to cut the prison population in half when he initially ran for office. We discuss immediate solutions the Governor could do today to help and state legislative solutions you need to discuss with candidates running for office. Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul finally filed charges this week against 3 Republican leaders who masterminded the 2020 election fake electors scheme. We close with a discussion of how Ascension's medical records crisis, the ending of the HSHS/Prevea Recovery Task Force in Eau Claire and a new Hospital workforce shortage are more strong reasons why our state legislative hospital regulation bills are desperately needed.

Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul announced forgery charges Tuesday against attorneys Jim Troupis and Kenneth Chesebro. At least one Republican lawmaker wants changes after a new report exposed Wisconsin's attorney general hired an environmental prosecutor thanks to a grant from Michael Bloomberg's environmental non-profit. Rep. Jerry O'Connor, R-Fond du Lac, accused Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul of “selling the Department of Justice to the highest bidder.” The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel broke the story that Kaul hired special assistant attorney general Karen Heineman with a grant from the SEEIC. She's being paid $90,000 annually to handle environmental cases. O'Connor said Kaul needs to answer why he's using the grant to hire a new prosecutor, and whether the non-profit is driving the prosecutorial agenda here in Wisconsin.Full story: https://www.thecentersquare.com/wisconsin/article_42c2fe02-186e-11ef-bb27-fb0952edaf91.html

Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul said Monday he would defend Donald Trump if the former president won the 2024 election in Wisconsin—because that's how much faith he has in the security and accuracy of Wisconsin elections. Contrast that with the state Senate Republican leader who refused Monday to remove a member of the Wisconsin Elections Commission, even though he served as a fake Trump elector and had to legally rescind his false claims. Guests: Christina Lorey

We welcome Wisconsin Public Education Network's Heather DuBois Bourenan to discuss public education in Wisconsin following a state budget that saw the largest expansion of private voucher schools as part of a “deal” that blindsided supporters of public education. Former President Trump revealed this eek he is a target of the special counsel's Jan. 6 investigation, as multiple Wisconsin election officials are interviewed by federal investigators. Meanwhile, MAGA Republican lawmakers introduce another sham bill to add watermarks to absentee ballots that drives right-wing conspiracies about stolen elections. We speculate whether the Michigan AG's prosecution of fake electors in their state will get Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul off the fence and reconsider prosecuting the Wisconsin fake electors who tried to steal our votes in 2020. We also review the Wisconsin Policy Forum's new report trumpeting over $1 Billion in tax cuts in the state budget, however we highlight its failure to point out the only large BIPOC majority city in Wisconsin gets a huge tax increase with a regressive sales tax increase.
On the roundup this week, we dig into the surprising election results of a coy UW-Madison conservative. Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul is making moves in lawsuits over abortion access.
