Attorney General of Wisconsin
POPULARITY
It's Friday and the weekend, starts here. Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul had a victory for AmeriCorps, as well as the state against The Felon President. And it looks like the film industry is one step closer to getting help from the state if creators want to make movies here. And it seems the Big Bill For Billionaires couldn't sink lower, just wait, because pets are next. Then, we are joined by Michelle Velasquez Chief Strategy Officer of Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin on how the aforementioned bill is looking to strip away funding for Planned Parenthood via Medicaid. And then if you're looking to get a dog this summer, places like The Wisconsin Humane Society, MADACC and HAWS are all in need of help. Whether it's finding a forever home for your new best friend or fostering, the Humane Society is running a special which makes it very affordable to get a new buddy. We apologize for being tardy to Homeroom today, Class! While we don't have a parent note, we do have trending education news to share with you! Let's focus in, because policy changes are coming fast, loud, and confusing. First, more labor unions representing educators join the AFT in their lawsuit against the federal Department of Education. The lawsuit follows the federal department's release of a Dear Colleague letter on February 14th outlining threats to funding for schools engaged in "DEI" efforts. Through the uncertainty, we agreed that we should focus on the effects, not the bluster. And now we see effects, as the department cancels hundreds of millions of dollars in grants for teacher apprenticeship programs. In response, eight state Attorneys General, including Wisconsin's Josh Kaul, filed suit. Because this isn't how we help students. So, there's a lot here. We urge you to focus past the dogwhistle of "DEI." This is a targeted attack on poor communities and on public schools. We'll be back on Wednesday and Friday with more hopeful podcasts! Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers gives his State of the State speech and we have excerpts on the budget, President Trump goes after the federal civil service starting with Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion administrators and those who work from home, Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul talks about the lawsuit filed by Wisconsin and other states against Trump's attempt to remove birth citizenship, a Peoples March was held in Madison and labor voices were there, Iowa considers rolling back child labor standards, Act 10 is kept on the books for now as the implementations demanded to make it constitutional are stayed pending appeal, and for now Stellantis is back to keeping its promise that it won't send jobs overseas.

On the board: how our state leaders are working to keep our elections safe and keep us moving forward! Josh talks with Mark about the importance of maintaining free and fair elections. Including providing proper security and safety measures for those who run our elections. Rock Energy gas workers with IBEW 965 have a contract, some states are pushing back on child labor expansion, more on the August referenda vote, and Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul has weighed in on ellection worker hiring. Today's show has tributes from friends and comrades of the late Frank Emspak, co-founder of Labor Radio.
We welcome David Liners, executive director of WISDOM, to discuss the stunning news that the Waupun prison warden and eight other staff were charged this week with crimes over multiple inmate deaths. Our discussion focuses on how this isn't just a story about a bad warden and staff, this is a bad system that needs to be overhauled. We look at the role of Governor Evers and the Department of Corrections in addressing both the current charges at Waupun and the systemic crisis of failing to address mass incarceration in the state, despite a commitment from Governor Evers to cut the prison population in half when he initially ran for office. We discuss immediate solutions the Governor could do today to help and state legislative solutions you need to discuss with candidates running for office. Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul finally filed charges this week against 3 Republican leaders who masterminded the 2020 election fake electors scheme. We close with a discussion of how Ascension's medical records crisis, the ending of the HSHS/Prevea Recovery Task Force in Eau Claire and a new Hospital workforce shortage are more strong reasons why our state legislative hospital regulation bills are desperately needed.
None of the Republicans who signed on as one of former President Donald Trump's Wisconsin electors is being charged in a new fraud case, but three former Trump advisers are. Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul announced forgery charges Tuesday against attorneys Jim Troupis and Kenneth Chesebro. Kaul also filed charges against former Trump campaign aide Michael Roman, who was also indicted in Georgia.Support this podcast: https://secure.anedot.com/franklin-news-foundation/ce052532-b1e4-41c4-945c-d7ce2f52c38a?source_code=xxxxxxFull story: https://www.thecentersquare.com/wisconsin/article_fd2c75aa-2298-11ef-aa3d-c30cf3cc45ea.html
UW-La Crosse political science professor, Dr. Anthony Chergosky, in studio ranking Donald Trump's VP picks and discussing how Wheel of Fortune is both not political and best for politics, as Pat Sajak has last show. Beginning of the show was mostly about Wheel of Fortune. But, not so much it being Sajak's last show, but on Vanna White continuing and how she has the best job in history — though she apparently does more than reveal letters. We also got a take about “the Wheel” from WIZM's gameshow expert Brad Williams, who has been on Jeopardy. And we talked about how the show's politics and "Hollywood" politics in general. After that (16:30), we got political, starting first about Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul charging some in the state's false elector scheme to overturn the 2020 election. And, the second half of the show (22:40) started with the presidential debates coming up, before we wrapped up with Chergosky ranking the Top 8 vice presidential picks, including some OLIs (outside looking ins).See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

At least one Republican lawmaker wants changes after a new report exposed Wisconsin's attorney general hired an environmental prosecutor thanks to a grant from Michael Bloomberg's environmental non-profit. Rep. Jerry O'Connor, R-Fond du Lac, accused Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul of “selling the Department of Justice to the highest bidder.” The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel broke the story that Kaul hired special assistant attorney general Karen Heineman with a grant from the SEEIC. She's being paid $90,000 annually to handle environmental cases. O'Connor said Kaul needs to answer why he's using the grant to hire a new prosecutor, and whether the non-profit is driving the prosecutorial agenda here in Wisconsin.Full story: https://www.thecentersquare.com/wisconsin/article_42c2fe02-186e-11ef-bb27-fb0952edaf91.html

Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul said Monday he would defend Donald Trump if the former president won the 2024 election in Wisconsin—because that's how much faith he has in the security and accuracy of Wisconsin elections. Contrast that with the state Senate Republican leader who refused Monday to remove a member of the Wisconsin Elections Commission, even though he served as a fake Trump elector and had to legally rescind his false claims. We welcome Wisconsin Public Education Network's Heather DuBois Bourenan to discuss public education in Wisconsin following a state budget that saw the largest expansion of private voucher schools as part of a “deal” that blindsided supporters of public education. Former President Trump revealed this eek he is a target of the special counsel's Jan. 6 investigation, as multiple Wisconsin election officials are interviewed by federal investigators. Meanwhile, MAGA Republican lawmakers introduce another sham bill to add watermarks to absentee ballots that drives right-wing conspiracies about stolen elections. We speculate whether the Michigan AG's prosecution of fake electors in their state will get Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul off the fence and reconsider prosecuting the Wisconsin fake electors who tried to steal our votes in 2020. We also review the Wisconsin Policy Forum's new report trumpeting over $1 Billion in tax cuts in the state budget, however we highlight its failure to point out the only large BIPOC majority city in Wisconsin gets a huge tax increase with a regressive sales tax increase.
On the roundup this week, we dig into the surprising election results of a coy UW-Madison conservative. Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul is making moves in lawsuits over abortion access. And what should Wisconsin do about wolves making a comeback in the state? The whole City Cast pack's here scavenging for the news. He recently asked members to sign confidentiality agreements to discuss cases, but they refused. Now the two sides are at an impasse. In this week's Capitol Notes conversation, JR Ross of WisPolitics.com tells WUWM's Marti Mikkelson that hundreds of millions of dollars in lawsuit settlement money could be at stake. And, the OxyContin settlement is at the center of the gridlock.
