Mirna Valerio, aka The Mirnavator, would like you to join her outside her comfort zone. That's where I found her when we were both backcountry skiing at Bolton Valley recently. I immediately recognized her from Instagram, where she has 165k followers at @themirnavator. But when I called her an “influencer,” she quickly corrected me. She said she prefers “possibility model.”Valerio, 49, is a former school teacher and author of the acclaimed blog, Fat Girl Running. The resident of Winooski is now a full-time professional athlete who has attracted legions of fans for her humor and honesty as she takes on big challenges, including multi-day ultramarathons. A self-described large woman and slow runner, she is a champion of body positivity. She hopes that as a Black women participating in what have been traditional white spaces — such as skiing, running and endurance sports — she can show people that being active and joyful do not know bounds of color, size, age, ability or any other difference.Valerio has been profiled in numerous national news outlets including NBC News, the Wall Street Journal, CNN, Runners World and the Today Show. She was recognized in 2018 by National Geographic as an Adventurer of the Year.Valerio has a book, “A Beautiful Work in Progress,” that she also hopes will inspire and motivate people.Valerio explained that it was 2015 when she started getting attention for her blog “about me being a plus size Black ultra marathoner.” It was “just me doing long distance in the body that I have, and crushing stereotypes of being of a fat person doing sports.”Valerio has a message to others. “People will always have something to say and an opinion about what you look like, the things that you do, what they think you should be doing, what they think you shouldn't be doing, and all of that's going to keep existing. But you can make a choice as to whether or not you are going to let that run your life.”“I say, you know, let curiosity be your guide. …And do the things that you need to do for yourself. Even though all of that other negative talk, it might be negative self talk too, even though all of that exists, you go out and do what you need and want to do for yourself.”Valerio, who is an unapologetic advocate of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI), says, “When I show up in a space that has traditionally not seen someone like me in that space, whether it's because of my body size, my gender or my race, I am sending a message, and it's not always easy. …Nature is for everybody. These lakes, these reservoirs, these camp spots, are for everyone. And I want everybody to be able to experience the delight and wonder of being out of nature. So if that means that I step into a space that's primarily white or that has previously been hostile to Black people or people of any other sort of non white identities, then I'm going to keep doing it, just so people can see me and know that they're going to be okay too.”

Mirna is an ultra runner, mountain biker, blogger, author, Mom, and so much more. She started Fat Girl Running, which is about her experiences as a larger woman in a world of thinner athletes. She has completed 14 ultramarathons and has quite a few more slated for the near future. Recorded 5/28/20. With everything going on today – protests against police brutality, an awakening of the persistence of racial injustice – a global pandemic – it's more important than ever that we find places to celebrate joy and specifically Black joy from Black people's stories. I know that seems counter intuitive, but joy will fuel us through these difficulties. Mirna Valerio is an ultradistance runner whose passion for the outdoors, inclusivity, diversity, and inspiring others is palpable. Mirna started a blog called Fat Girl Running to talk through her experiences as a “larger woman in a world of thinner athletes.” Her blog has since propelled her into the spotlight. Mirna now travels around the country and the world to speak, teach, and encourage others to live large. In this podcast, we talk about Mirna's upbringing and how she got her start in ultrarunning. As a Brooklyn native, Mirna didn't have access to trails as a child, but excursions through her middle and high school helped develop her love for the outdoors, while her drive for team sports encouraged her athleticism. After a health scare in 2008, Mirna started running again and hasn't looked back since. She's now a cross-country coach (she helped train Will Smith for a half-marathon!), an acclaimed author of her recent memoir A Beautiful Work in Progress, and a participant in races both nationally and abroad. I'm so inspired by Mirna's infectious positivity and her drive to keep pushing herself. I so enjoyed speaking with her about racism, the connection between COVID and ultrarunning, and how to manage imposter syndrome. “Find a way.”––Diana Nyad Find Mirna's website here Check out Mirna's Instagram Find Mirna on Facebook Follow Mirna on Twitter Buy Mirna's Book “A Beautiful Work in Progress” here Scroll through her blog at Fat Girl Running Support Mirna on Patreon Check out her current favorite book Big Summer by Jennifer Weiner Today's episode is brought to you by Fat Tire. My guest for today’s episode is Mirna Valerio. Mirna is an author, ultrarunner, adventurer and public speaker.
Carrie chats with the one and only Mirna Valerio! They talk about Mirna’s running history, her writing under the moniker “Fat Girl Running”, how she builds herself up on her terms, her love of wine, and much more.
On the first day of high school, Mirna Valerio went to hockey practice - and suffered. She was larger than the other players, and a lot less fit. Her coach, instead of telling her she was no good, encouraged her to keep going - and that’s why today Mirna is an ultramarathoner, speaker, author, and the 2018 National Geographic Adventurer of the Year. The name of Mirna’s first blog, “Fat Girl Running”, describes exactly who she is - a body-positive larger woman who lives to run (and when she can’t do that anymore, surf). In this episode of Rob Konrad: Conversations, Mirna tells Rob about the challenges she’s overcome to become a professional runner, the bullying she’s endured because of her body type, and the gratitude and compassion she’s discovered through changing her life and living her dream. And - she believes that anyone can do the same, without so much as jogging around the block. For the video interview of the conversation, show notes, full transcripts, links to Mirna's books, and more, visit:https://www.robkonrad.com/podcast/conversations/003-mirna-valerio/ See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Sarah Bowen Shea and Maggie Palmer dive into a candid conversation with Mirna “The Mirnavator” Valerio, the author of A Beautiful Work in Progress, which was an extension of her Fat Girl Running blog. Mirna, a plus-size ultramarathoner of color, talks about how she feels about the public attention she garners, including how she shuts out naysayers. She reveals how she feels about “failing pretty publically” in some races. Mirna shares how she practices visual and visceral self-love. A finisher of 22 marathons and ultras, Mirna offers loads of advice for ultrarunners as well as giving a suggestion for an ideal first-time marathon. Find out how bacon enters the conversation. And applaud what she says about walking in a running race. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Mirna’s transformation into a long-distance runner happened slowly. It started with doing a mile at a time and then eventually she worked her way up to a 5-kilometer race. Then that led to a 5K, then a 10K, which led to a half marathon, which led to her first marathon in 2011. Mirna started her blog in 2011, Fat Girl Running while training for this marathon as a way to share stories with her friends and family. The blog is about being an active larger girl in a thinner world via the individual yet universal sport of running. Mirna, uses the blog to write about her training routines, race experiences and obstacles that she faces as "an active larger girl in a thinner world.” Her personal accounts have helped her become a source of inspiration for other female athletes. "People took comfort in the fact that I was experiencing the same things that they were but I was still out there running. It didn't stop me.” As her story grew, so did her running goals. Marathons turned into ultra-marathons. The longest race she has run so far is 100K; that's 62 miles. And she's not looking to slow down anytime soon. Mirna, continues to challenge stereotypes and inspires others to do the same. Mirna’s ultimate running goal, is the Trans Rockies Race, which is a multi-stage, 6-day, 120-mile run through the Rocky Mountains! **************************************************** "I think most people who are my size and in athletic pursuit, we exude something different. Trails are this girl's best friend and she has quickly became an icon for plus sized runners. I have personally been deeply inspired by Mirna's accomplishments and how she has changed the status quo for us fat ladies. In this episode, we talk about her book, her new crazy life that is full of speaking engagements and book tours, her recent experience at the Boston Marathon, her decision to take on a running coach for her training, the pressure that comes with being the "face" of plus sized running, and what she has planned for the rest of this year. Her blog is called Fat Girl Running and her friends and fans affectionately call her The Mirnavator. Mirna Valerio runs marathons and ultras and changes perceptions on a daily basis. Looking for a little Mirnavation? You’ve come to the right place!
Mirna’s Wild Idea: To run ultra-marathons and advocate for body positivity, showing others fitness comes in many sizes. You may have seen Mirna Valerio, “The Mirnavator.” Her video with REI had millions of views on Facebook. It starts with her reading an angry letter from a guy who wrote to her while she was doing a 50k run. He called her a “fraud,” a “liar,” and said she is not only faking running ultra-marathons, but she’s making a bad name for runners because she is overweight and doesn’t “look like a runner.” Well, Mirna can not only run, but she’s a true force of nature. She’s also a teacher, coach, diversity leader, trained opera singer, mom, wife, and recently added author and brand ambassador to her resume. A few years ago, when Mirna started doing longer runs, she started the site called Fat Girl Running. There weren’t a lot of people who looked like her on the trail, and she wanted to get more people outside running. Her story was featured in the Wall Street Journal in 2015, and then was picked up by Runner’s World, NBC Nightly, CNN, and REI. She has now added a few more titles to her resume: brand ambassador, author of her new book, A Beautiful Work in Progress, and my own addition, total badass! Listening to Mirna talk is inspiring. She has an incredible outlook on the world, she laughs easily, and she isn’t afraid to go deep. We talked about diving into the uncomfortable, dealing with haters, how to create opportunities for yourself, and how you can be a runner no matter what your size, shape, or background. Presented by REI Listen to this episode if: You want to start running. You are self-conscious about your body or fitness level. You need a dose of positivity. You want to break out of your comfort zone. You hate when people tell you that you can’t do something. “Instead of being ashamed of doing what you do or being what you are, I ask two important questions: Why not celebrate it? Why not be proud of the fact that the body you are in can do great things?” Mirna Valerio What is a runner? How do we define an athlete? What does it truly mean to be fit and healthy?Challenging stereotypes, today's guest demands that we broaden our limited definition of these terms. She may not be fast, but she runs. In fact she runs a lot, an impressive slew of ultramarathons to her name. She's also not skinny. In fact, she's big.250 pounds big.But Mirna Valerio is without a doubt a runner. In fact, the force of nature affectionately known as The Mirnavator is one of the most inspirational athletes I have ever met — a true ambassador of sport on a mission to empower women of all shapes and sizes to proudly embrace their bodies, expand their horizons, and own their truth.Carrying herself with grace, an intelligent self-confidence and a smile so gleeful it brightens all in her path, Mirna's appeal has less to do with her ability to run long distances and everything to do with her unapologetic celebration of her personal truth.Mirna's joyful self-acceptance is both real and rare. It's both authentic and bold. It's as infectious as it is inclusive. And it's incredibly empowering to the millions of people who suffer body shame issues silently. When she’s not running, the Brooklyn native (now living in the North Georgia Mountains with her husband and teenage son) is a Spanish teacher, diversity practitioner, cross-country coach, and author of the wildly popular blog Fat Girl Running. She also writes frequently for Women's Running Magazine and recently released a remarkable memoir I thoroughly enjoyed entitled, A Beautiful Work In Progress*.She’s been profiled in the Wall Street Journal and Runner's World and on NBC Nightly News. She’s also an ambassador for a variety of brands like REI, Merrell, Skirt Sports and Swiftwick. Just this week Mirna became one of the faces of JC Penney’s newly launched Here I Am campaign.I first came across Mirna’s story by way of a mini-documentary produced by REI called The Mirnavator that went viral. Hooked, I was determined to share her powerful story with you. Mirna more than delivered.Much like past episodes with Josh LaJaunie, Adam Sud, David Clark and my most recent episode with Charlie Jabaley, this is an incredibly inspiring underdog every person story. But unlike those tales, Mirna's journey is not one marked by dramatic before and after photos. On the contrary, this is a story about body acceptance and body positivity. It's a conversation about self-empowerment and self-acceptance. It’s about tackling stereotypes, overcoming prejudice and the importance of inclusion. And it's an exchange about the need to redefine how we think about and define athleticism, the spirit of sport, and fitness in general. But more than anything, this is a conversation about owning your truth.I adore Mirna and I absolutely love this conversation. I think you will too. Please stick around to the very end for a treat. In addition to her impressive accomplishments, Mirna is also an extremely talented, Julliard-trained opera singer. I was able to convince her to take us out with her angelic, etheral voice. It's insane!Peace + Plants, See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
