Mirna Valerio, aka The Mirnavator, would like you to join her outside her comfort zone. That's where I found her when we were both backcountry skiing at Bolton Valley recently. I immediately recognized her from Instagram, where she has 165k followers at @themirnavator. But when I called her an “influencer,” she quickly corrected me. She said she prefers “possibility model.”Valerio, 49, is a former school teacher and author of the acclaimed blog, Fat Girl Running. The resident of Winooski is now a full-time professional athlete who has attracted legions of fans for her humor and honesty as she takes on big challenges, including multi-day ultramarathons. A self-described large woman and slow runner, she is a champion of body positivity. She hopes that as a Black women participating in what have been traditional white spaces — such as skiing, running and endurance sports — she can show people that being active and joyful do not know bounds of color, size, age, ability or any other difference.Valerio has been profiled in numerous national news outlets including NBC News, the Wall Street Journal, CNN, Runners World and the Today Show. She was recognized in 2018 by National Geographic as an Adventurer of the Year.Valerio has a book, “A Beautiful Work in Progress,” that she also hopes will inspire and motivate people.Valerio explained that it was 2015 when she started getting attention for her blog “about me being a plus size Black ultra marathoner.” It was “just me doing long distance in the body that I have, and crushing stereotypes of being of a fat person doing sports.”Valerio has a message to others. “People will always have something to say and an opinion about what you look like, the things that you do, what they think you should be doing, what they think you shouldn't be doing, and all of that's going to keep existing. But you can make a choice as to whether or not you are going to let that run your life.”“I say, you know, let curiosity be your guide. …And do the things that you need to do for yourself. Even though all of that other negative talk, it might be negative self talk too, even though all of that exists, you go out and do what you need and want to do for yourself.”Valerio, who is an unapologetic advocate of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI), says, “When I show up in a space that has traditionally not seen someone like me in that space, whether it's because of my body size, my gender or my race, I am sending a message, and it's not always easy. …Nature is for everybody. These lakes, these reservoirs, these camp spots, are for everyone. And I want everybody to be able to experience the delight and wonder of being out of nature. So if that means that I step into a space that's primarily white or that has previously been hostile to Black people or people of any other sort of non white identities, then I'm going to keep doing it, just so people can see me and know that they're going to be okay too.”

Carolyn Su is a runner and the founder of Diverse We Run, a space to build racial diversity and amplify diverse voices and stories in running on Instagram. Until 2020, Su was a road runner. She hadn't run on the trails, let alone race. And when she documented her friend's experiences at the 2019 Trans Rockies, a multi-day trail running stage race, she thought it looked amazing, but it didn't even occur to her that this was something she'd be capable of. But then, on one fateful day, she got a call from her friend Mirna Valerio. Valerio had an invitation for Su to participate in the 2021 version of the Trans Rockies, that same multi-day race Su's friend had done. That invitation sparked something in Su's curious, adventurous spirit, and she decided to say yes. No doubt, Su, who is Chinese-American, was excited to embark on an epic adventure. In addition, she was strongly motived to help create space in this sport for people who look like her: she wanted to represent and to be seen. This is the story of Su's fears and joys, as well as her triumphs and exhaustion, navigating the predominantly white and male world of trail running, helping to carve out space for BIPOC runners. Su's story elevates concerns, racism, danger, and frustrations that white runners can largely overlook or don't even notice, but which make this sport far less welcoming and more laborious for BIPOC runners. Su's story is testament to why diverse voices and representation in running, especially trail running, matter. A Beautiful Work in Progress is Mirna's memoir and the story of how she got into ultrarunning and subsequently finishing her first 100k race. Although the book starts with her running, she goes back to her childhood and talks about her family, how she grew up surrounded by cousins, and the time she spent outside with them. Mirna grew up in a body positive environment where all the women who surrounded her were curvy, and where she was never described as “fat” until much later in life. She also watched her mother lose both her best friend and her youngest brother to heart attacks, and she has made it her mission to stay active so that that she can stay healthy but without a focus on weight loss. By the end of the book, Mirna is successful in her first 100k race at the Javelina Jundred, but if you are already following her on social media, then you know that is not where her sporting journey ends. Mirna Valerio is a native of Brooklyn, NY, a former educator and cross-country coach, ultramarathoner, cyclist and newish skier, DEI practitioner, and author of the memoir, A Beautiful Work in Progress. Feeling awe changes your brain. In our first episode in a series about the science awe, we explore how awe can make you a better friend, partner, and community member. Episode summary: When Mirna Valerio tried out hiking for the first time as a young kid, she discovered something she didn't expect: Being outdoors seemed to bring strangers closer to one another. It was like it somehow fastracked forming meaningful relationships. Today we know that the feeling of awe nature often inspires has something to do with this. Awe is the feeling you get when in the presence of something vast and incomprehensible. When we feel it, our sense of self shrinks – in a good way – and we get better at connecting with others. Today on The Science of Happiness, we explore what it's like when awe helps us create communities, and the science behind how it works. This episode is part of special series we're doing on Awe. In the weeks ahead, we'll share Happiness Breaks to help you contemplate what's awe-inspiring in your life and explore more dimensions of awe in the stories and science we share on this podcast. Our host, Dacher Keltner, has a new book out about awe. It's called Awe: The New Science of Everyday Wonder and How It Can Transform Your Life. Legends, I am stoked to bring you today's episode with Mirna Valerio! Mirna started her blog, Fatgirlrunning, to document her journey through running as a larger woman in the world of thinner athletes. Her blog took off and after a long road of consistency, perseverance, determination of this woman who is now a professional athlete running for LuluLemon. Before becoming a professional athlete, Mirna was a cross-country coach and a teacher for 18 years while leading the diversity and inclusion program at her school. Her life trajectory changed when one day she was driving home from work and began experiencing significant chest pain and was rushed to the hospital. After many examinations, it was clear that she had a panic attack - which felt impossible to her because as she had previously thought, “Black people don't have panic attacks.” Due to the extreme quantity of responsibilities she was taking on in her life, she wasn't sleeping and was on track to an early death. The doctor asked her, “do you want to see your son grow up?” and from that moment forward, she changed the way she lived, from training and sleep to nutrition and everything in between. After breaking out her treadmill, she started running 5k's every weekend in New York City and is now sponsored by Lululemon and LL Bean as well as multiple others. In addition to her athletic career, Mirna is also a speaker and the author of her memoir “A Beautiful Work in Progress.” In today's episode we dive into her journey of becoming a professional athlete, her relationship with anxiety and the stereotypes that accompany being a Black person with anxiety as well as a deeper look into what it's like being a Black woman in the United States. We specifically discuss:Being a Black person with anxietyHow to become a professional athlete? How can an athlete get sponsored?Breaking stereotypesWhat are symptoms of overworking?Team, Mirna is a legend and this episode provides a unique look into her life and who she is. One of my favorite things to do this time of year is get outside and take in all the beautiful fall foliage and crisp air here in Virginia, and I'm fortunate to have some great trails close to my home, which has really benefitted my physical and mental health. So, I'm thrilled that NRPA is once again partnering with Merrell for the Hike Your Turf campaign this month, which focuses on encouraging everyone to get outside and explore their local parks and trails, as well as the importance of equitable access to these spaces. The campaign leads up to National Take a Hike Day on November 17, so be sure to share all the ways you're celebrating on social media using #HikeYourTurf — Merrell will donate $1 to NRPA for every post using that hashtag, as well as $5 for every email signup on their website! One way we're celebrating this campaign is by welcoming today's guest Mirna Valerio — one of Merrell's ambassadors — to the podcast. Just in case you don't know: She is a plus size Black woman doing all of the fabulous things and in high demand. On this episode, Mirna and Latoya speak about self care -- that they're both not practicing as two Black in demand athletes, content creators and motivational speakers in the fitness and wellness space. Both women jokingly but head on speak out about their feelings on the stereotypes that follow you as a public figure when lumped under the umbrella of being viewed as "body positive," the irony of defying stereotypes that marginalized people didn't create, the beauty of the outdoors and being a sometimes recruited, sometimes volunteered DEI expert and educator due to the influx of media coverage of racial discrimination. In under 50 minutes, Mirna Valerio and Latoya Shauntay Snell will possibly make you laugh, feel uncomfortable and passively educate you about different layers and pressures of being a marginalized public figure in the outdoor space.Support the show (https://ko-fi.com/runningfatchef)

Meet Mirna Valerio, ultra-marathon runner, former educator, cross-country coach, speaker, and author of the memoir, A Beautiful Work in Progress. Named National Geographic's Adventurer of the Year in 2018, Mirna Valerio is challenging the stereotype of what ‘fit' looks like and reminds all of us to see our bodies as incredible – just the way they are. HOST: Kelly Lewis | @gokellylewis GUEST: Mirna Valero | @themirnavator For more inspiring stories of women around the globe, check out the book Tell Her She Can't https://tellhershecant.com/ SHOW NOTES: (01:08) I was a girl whose family often toggled the working class and poverty line and came to love camping and the great outdoors. As an adult, Mirna became an educator. Hear how a health scare reignited her love for physical activity and how she learned to put herself first. (05:26) Mirna discusses the importance of goals when commiting to a lifestyle centered on health and wellness. (08:21) In 2014 Mirna wrote a blog post that gained unexpected tracition, resulting in an interview from the New York Times and a 12-page profile in Runner's World. It was in these pivotal moments Mirna had to make a choice between going all in on working for herself, or keeping her job as an educator. (12:57) Mirna addresses the stereotypes often associated with the idea of fitness and how her existence challenges the misconceptions of who society deems “fit.” She remarks that fit is not synonymous with chiseled and how the language surrounding health and the fitness industry needs to change. She drives home the message that no matter who you are, or what you look like, your body is incredible and capable of amazing things. Podcast Producer: Elise Fitzsimmons | helloelisefitz@gmail.com

The UK's favourite fitness coach is back with series two of his podcast. This summer, Joe will be speaking to inspirational friends and some of his favourite people to ask them what they do to keep themselves feeling mentally and physically strong in the face of life's little challenges. It might be going for a new personal best on the running machine or cosying up with a good book; every guest will share the one thing that works for them in the hope it might inspire you to try something new. In this episode Joe speaks to ultra-athlete and writer Mirna Valerio. Mirna is shattering stereotypes as 'The Mirnavator' as she's known to her followers on social media. She regularly competes in ultramarathons and long-distance trail events alongside her campaigning work for better inclusion and diversity in endurance sport. A former schoolteacher, she teaches on social justice and anti-racism. Mirna joins the call from her home in Montpelier, Vermont, where she moved to be closer to the mountain trails where she loves to train. She shares her story with Joe from the health scare which prompted her to get back on her tread mill, to running 100-mile trails. She describes encounters with bears and internet trolls while out running in the forest, and how she loves nothing more than curling up with a good book to relax and unwind. This is sunshine in a podcast. Joe Wicks is here for you, and he won't stop until you're fit and happy. Producer: Clare Salisbury Editor: Dimitri Houtart A BBC Audio Bristol production for Radio 4

Recorded 5/28/20. With everything going on today – protests against police brutality, an awakening of the persistence of racial injustice – a global pandemic – it's more important than ever that we find places to celebrate joy and specifically Black joy from Black people's stories. I know that seems counter intuitive, but joy will fuel us through these difficulties. Mirna Valerio is an ultradistance runner whose passion for the outdoors, inclusivity, diversity, and inspiring others is palpable. Mirna started a blog called Fat Girl Running to talk through her experiences as a “larger woman in a world of thinner athletes.” Her blog has since propelled her into the spotlight. Mirna now travels around the country and the world to speak, teach, and encourage others to live large. In this podcast, we talk about Mirna's upbringing and how she got her start in ultrarunning. As a Brooklyn native, Mirna didn't have access to trails as a child, but excursions through her middle and high school helped develop her love for the outdoors, while her drive for team sports encouraged her athleticism. After a health scare in 2008, Mirna started running again and hasn't looked back since. She's now a cross-country coach (she helped train Will Smith for a half-marathon!), an acclaimed author of her recent memoir A Beautiful Work in Progress, and a participant in races both nationally and abroad. I'm so inspired by Mirna's infectious positivity and her drive to keep pushing herself. I so enjoyed speaking with her about racism, the connection between COVID and ultrarunning, and how to manage imposter syndrome. “Find a way.”––Diana Nyad Find Mirna's website here Check out Mirna's Instagram Find Mirna on Facebook Follow Mirna on Twitter Buy Mirna's Book “A Beautiful Work in Progress” here Scroll through her blog at Fat Girl Running Support Mirna on Patreon Check out her current favorite book Big Summer by Jennifer Weiner Today's episode is brought to you by Fat Tire.
