Mirna Valerio, aka The Mirnavator, would like you to join her outside her comfort zone. That's where I found her when we were both backcountry skiing at Bolton Valley recently. I immediately recognized her from Instagram, where she has 165k followers at @themirnavator. But when I called her an “influencer,” she quickly corrected me. She said she prefers “possibility model.”Valerio, 49, is a former school teacher and author of the acclaimed blog, Fat Girl Running. The resident of Winooski is now a full-time professional athlete who has attracted legions of fans for her humor and honesty as she takes on big challenges, including multi-day ultramarathons. A self-described large woman and slow runner, she is a champion of body positivity. She hopes that as a Black women participating in what have been traditional white spaces — such as skiing, running and endurance sports — she can show people that being active and joyful do not know bounds of color, size, age, ability or any other difference.Valerio has been profiled in numerous national news outlets including NBC News, the Wall Street Journal, CNN, Runners World and the Today Show. She was recognized in 2018 by National Geographic as an Adventurer of the Year.Valerio has a book, “A Beautiful Work in Progress,” that she also hopes will inspire and motivate people.Valerio explained that it was 2015 when she started getting attention for her blog “about me being a plus size Black ultra marathoner.” It was “just me doing long distance in the body that I have, and crushing stereotypes of being of a fat person doing sports.”Valerio has a message to others. “People will always have something to say and an opinion about what you look like, the things that you do, what they think you should be doing, what they think you shouldn't be doing, and all of that's going to keep existing. But you can make a choice as to whether or not you are going to let that run your life.”“I say, you know, let curiosity be your guide. …And do the things that you need to do for yourself. Even though all of that other negative talk, it might be negative self talk too, even though all of that exists, you go out and do what you need and want to do for yourself.”Valerio, who is an unapologetic advocate of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI), says, “When I show up in a space that has traditionally not seen someone like me in that space, whether it's because of my body size, my gender or my race, I am sending a message, and it's not always easy. …Nature is for everybody. These lakes, these reservoirs, these camp spots, are for everyone. And I want everybody to be able to experience the delight and wonder of being out of nature. So if that means that I step into a space that's primarily white or that has previously been hostile to Black people or people of any other sort of non white identities, then I'm going to keep doing it, just so people can see me and know that they're going to be okay too.”

Mirna Valerio, aka the Mirnavator, has never shied away from adversity. As a Black woman in a larger body who is also an ultrarunner, she's endured her share of harassment and ridicule, both online and in real life. But despite some people trying to put her down, she's devoted her life to lifting others up, showing those like herself what's possible, which, for her, includes 11 marathons, 15 50K+ ultras, and a best-selling memoir, A Beautiful Work in Progress. Now, Mirna is facing another challenge we're all familiar with, perimenopause. This week we talk all about what she's experiencing, how it's impacting her running, and what she's doing to take care of herself through this chapter of her journey.Mirna Valerio is an ultramarathoner, cyclist, skier, DEI professional, and author of the memoir, A Beautiful Work in Progress. She began running in high school, recommitted to the sport after a health scare in 2008 and started her blog Fatgirlrunning—about her experiences as a plus-sized woman in a world of thinner endurance athletes— while training for her first marathon. Mirna has been featured in the Wall Street Journal, Runner's World, on NBC Nightly News, CNN, and in the viral documentary short, REI Presents The Mirnavator. She's written for Women's Running, Self, Outside, and Runner's World. In 2018 she was chosen as a National Geographic Adventurer of the Year, and since then has appeared on the Kelly Clarkson Show, Access Daily, The Today Show, and Good Morning America. Mirna is one of the Lululemon ambassadors participating in FURTHER, an initiative to show how far women can go when they're supported with resources and product innovations typically reserved for men. She loved it from the start, even though some of her early ski experiences ended with spectacular falls.  Then in 2021 she started taking lessons again at Sugarbush and Bolton Valley.  She shares the ups and downs of learning to ski as an adult and letting go of control.  She enjoys taking lessons at different ski resorts and finds it is a great way to get to know a mountain. Mirna shares some of the challenges of finding plus size ski gear for women and where she has found some great plus size options. "I don't know what that was. It was this narrow tunnel vision. I saw it slip away there for a second. It was this decision in my entire body that was like, 'No. I am going to take this spot.' It felt like something had taken over me." This week Natosha Rogers of the Hansons-Brooks Distance Project joins More Than Running to break down her third place finish at the USATF USA 10,000m Championship this past weekend at the Prefontaine Classic. Natosha outkicked Emily Infled narrowly 31:29.80 to 31:30.04 to qualify for the World Athletics Championship in Eugene, Oregon, which will be held in July. Natosha's running story dates back to 2012 when she placed second at the U.S. Olympic Trials in the 10,000m but was unable to be on the team due not having the qualifying standard. It's like 'Who is this person? They're so insignificant.' At the end of the day, that comment says more about them. Half the time, I just want to be like, 'Are you OK? Legends, I am stoked to bring you today's episode with Mirna Valerio! Mirna started her blog, Fatgirlrunning, to document her journey through running as a larger woman in the world of thinner athletes. Her blog took off and after a long road of consistency, perseverance, determination of this woman who is now a professional athlete running for LuluLemon. Before becoming a professional athlete, Mirna was a cross-country coach and a teacher for 18 years while leading the diversity and inclusion program at her school. Her life trajectory changed when one day she was driving home from work and began experiencing significant chest pain and was rushed to the hospital. After many examinations, it was clear that she had a panic attack - which felt impossible to her because as she had previously thought, “Black people don't have panic attacks.” Due to the extreme quantity of responsibilities she was taking on in her life, she wasn't sleeping and was on track to an early death. The doctor asked her, “do you want to see your son grow up?” and from that moment forward, she changed the way she lived, from training and sleep to nutrition and everything in between. After breaking out her treadmill, she started running 5k's every weekend in New York City and is now sponsored by Lululemon and LL Bean as well as multiple others. In addition to her athletic career, Mirna is also a speaker and the author of her memoir “A Beautiful Work in Progress.” In today's episode we dive into her journey of becoming a professional athlete, her relationship with anxiety and the stereotypes that accompany being a Black person with anxiety as well as a deeper look into what it's like being a Black woman in the United States. We specifically discuss:Being a Black person with anxietyHow to become a professional athlete? How can an athlete get sponsored?Breaking stereotypesWhat are symptoms of overworking?Team, Mirna is a legend and this episode provides a unique look into her life and who she is. It's hard to believe, but it is already November. One of my favorite things to do this time of year is get outside and take in all the beautiful fall foliage and crisp air here in Virginia, and I'm fortunate to have some great trails close to my home, which has really benefitted my physical and mental health. So, I'm thrilled that NRPA is once again partnering with Merrell for the Hike Your Turf campaign this month, which focuses on encouraging everyone to get outside and explore their local parks and trails, as well as the importance of equitable access to these spaces. The campaign leads up to National Take a Hike Day on November 17, so be sure to share all the ways you're celebrating on social media using #HikeYourTurf — Merrell will donate $1 to NRPA for every post using that hashtag, as well as $5 for every email signup on their website! One way we're celebrating this campaign is by welcoming today's guest Mirna Valerio — one of Merrell's ambassadors — to the podcast. Mirna was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, and she is a former educator, cross-country coach, ultrarunner, obstacle course enthusiast, and author of A Beautiful Work in Progress. Although she began running in high school, Mirna recommitted to the sport after a health scare in 2008. It was then that her love for running and all its attendant benefits were reignited. She soon started her blog Fatgirlrunning, about her experiences as a larger woman in a world of thinner athletes. Mirna's writing and athletic story have been featured in tons of publications, and in the viral REI-produced documentary short, The Mirnavator. She was also chosen as a 2018 National Geographic Adventurer of the Year. Tune in to the full episode below to learn more about Mirna, her passion for running and the outdoors, and what compelled her to begin sharing her story, which has inspired so many. You'll also learn: How access to local parks and trails has personally benefitted Mirna's life. What she is most proud of among her many accomplishments. How she unplugs and embraces self-care How park and recreation professionals can “allow people to live, to experience, and to express the fullness of their humanity every time and all the time.” Why you should #HikeYourTurf on November 17, and more! We're talking about her history as a runner, the assumptions other's make, and how to assert yourself no matter what is going on on the outside! I'm also answering the question, "Do you ever have days where you look at your body and just feel… not so great? Do you ever see yourself in a photo and think, YIKES! Do you ever have days where you find yourself slipping back into old habits, mindless snacking on junk food, or whatever?”
