Today, we're diving into something profound: how creativity connects us to the divine. I'm talking with Carey Wallace about inspiration—not just as an artistic concept, but as a spiritual practice. What if art isn't something we manufacture, but something we receive? What if creativity is actually a way of following God, even when we don't realize it? Wallace argues that inspiration comes from outside ourselves—that it's a gesture of surrender, a way of opening ourselves to something greater. We're going to explore how every act of creation can be an encounter with the divine. Whether you're a painter, a writer, someone working a nine-to-five job, or just someone trying to live creatively—this conversation is about discovering that we're all makers, created in the image of a creative God. We'll talk about how inspiration works, why art can be worship, and how surrendering to something beyond ourselves might be the most powerful creative act we can make. If you've ever felt stuck, wondered about your creative potential, or sensed there's something more to making art than just skill, lean in. This is a conversation about seeing the world—and yourself—differently.Carey Wallace is the author of The Discipline of Inspiration: The Mysterious Encounter With God At The Heart of Creativity (Eerdmans), The Blind Contessa's New Machine (Penguin), and The Ghost In The Glass House (Clarion). She works to help people from all walks of life find inspiration and build strong creative habits to sustain a lifetime of creation. She performs as a songwriter, exhibits her own fine art, and has spoken on art, faith, and justice with students at Princeton, Julliard, Emory, Pratt, and Yale. Her articles and poems have appeared in Time, Detroit's Metro Times, and America. She is the founder of a retreat for artists in Michigan, and the Creative Discipline Class to form strong creative habits, which has been in operation for over a decade across the US and internationally. She grew up in small towns in Michigan, and lives and works in Brooklyn.Carey's Book:The Discipline of InspirationSubscribe to Our Substack: Shifting CultureConnect with Joshua: jjohnson@allnations.usGo to www.shiftingculturepodcast.com to interact and donate.

After a truly inane discussion about ‘back slashes' vs ‘forward slashes', the guys discuss the career of the late Christopher Reeve and the recent documentary on his life ‘Superman / Man' (2:41). They discuss Reeve's early career, his studies at Julliard and his iconic role as Superman. They then discuss his tragic horseback riding accident and how he was left with significant spinal cord injuries. They then talk about his advocacy work in the latter part of his life and his death in 2004. They then give their thoughts on the documentary itself. Then Ali asks Asif in more detail about spinal cord injuries (30:19). Asif starts of with defining spinal cord injuries and how common they are. He then talks about the causes, symptoms and the immediate treatment. Ali then asks Asif about the prognosis and long term treatment. Finally, Asif discusses promising new experimental treatments for spinal cord injury. The opinions expressed are those of the hosts, and do not reflect those of any other organizations. Send us a textThis interview is a long time coming. I am extremely grateful for Adam taking the time to come on to share his knowledge. I'm sure if time allotted, we could easily could've had a three hour conversation, and I promise we will do at least one more episode. Sharing her own musical career with her internationally known musician-husband, Robert, Gaby excelled in her roles as a concert pianist, piano teacher, interpreter of modern French composers, intrepid world traveler, mother to three children, wife, and champion of her husband's composing career as well as his extraordinary performance career as a pianist. Gaby and Robert certainly could be said to have had a “piano love affair.” The Casadesus family had been musicians for generations but Robert and Gaby's family went on to be especially known as the “The First Family of the Piano. Their son, Jean, sometimes performed with them on pieces featuring three pianos, one even captured on CBS TV! Gaby's delightful memoir, My Musical Notes, is now available in English for the first time and is being published in October by Hamilton Books, an imprint of Bloomsbury Publishing. It was first published in French in 1989 and describes: *Gaby's love of teaching the French piano tradition, giving lessons at well-known schools such as the American Conservatory at Fontainebleau, Julliard and Curtis Institute of Music. This episode features trombonist Hillary Simms. She has accomplished a lot in a short time and I personally look up to her. She has so many pedagogical ideas that she shares with us and on her social media platforms. A side note; I was feeling cheeky when introducing her because I had been teaching a young euphonium student that likes to play the Canada National anthem, so forgive me for not being absolutely 100 percent correct with my geography. Either way take a listen and before you do I have a few things I am thankful for in 2024. New friendship and partnership Bruce Faske Friends and new connections sharing their stories, experiences, and knowledge with me on this platform. So much support from the music and trombone community through career struggles this year! I cannot thank you enough! For my family especially my girls (wife and daughters) who support all of my ideas and practice routines. AND to all of you who listen and support this show. Enjoy this episode with Hillary Simms. https://www.hillarysimmstrombone.com/about

Supported by her orchestra's trombone section and the beefiest baritones Julliard has to offer, Schneider's tune is bound to secure the Vikes the top slot in the NFC North. Check out the conversation and the tune here and SKOL VIKINGS.

While attending Julliard, actress Elizabeth Marvel and her boyfriend at the time, Michael Stuhlbarg, participated in an experiment at the Princeton University campus that tested the ability of human consciousness to affect outside forces. After doing extremely well on the tests, Elizabeth experienced strange side effects that seemingly enhanced her psychic abilities. After speaking with Elizabeth, Jack does some investigating to find the organization that ran these experiments and interviews Dr. Roger Nelson, who worked at the adjoining PEAR (Princeton Engineering Anomalies Research) labs. I have known the Canadian cellist Julia MacLaine for many years in her role asAssistant Principal Cello of Canada's National Arts Centre Orchestra, of which I am also a member. In this episode we're highlighting her gorgeous album Preludes which pairs the Preludes of J.S. Bach for Cello solo and with newly commissioned works for solo cello by Canadian composers. Julia and I talked about many things, including how best to address the challenges of maintaining high levels of playing and inspiration, studying the craft of songwriting with the legendary Ian Tamblyn , the intricacies of putting together ambitious projects, her childhood in Prince Edward Island, and strategies to cope with performance anxiety. It was really inspiring to hear some of the wisdom Julia gained from her mentors including Timothy Eddy and the late Antonio Lysy. This episode features excerpts of music from Preludes including that of J.S. Bach, Airat Ichmouratov, Carmen Braden, Roy Johnstone and Nicole Lizée. Body swapping is a time-honored film trope, especially in family-friendly inspirational comedies, where a character might “wish upon a star” to switch lives with someone who makes them jealous. Since God can make anything possible through prayer, Christian genre films are a perfect fit for this concept. SWITCHED lulls its audience into a false sense of security by beginning as one might expect a Christian teen body swap movie to go: a socially anxious Christian girl named Cassandra prays her school bully, the famous social media influencer Katie, could experience a day in the lives of her bullying victims. The two girls awaken the next morning in each others' bodies, and the high jinks begin in school as both must train each other to carry out their their day-to-day lives without being able to explain their unbelievable circumstances. Katie must learn how to play folk guitar for a Julliard audition; Cassandra is now interviewing for a prestigious influencer position on “The Glam Slam”. It's cute in theory, but SWITCHED ultimately fails because of some bizarre plot choices. Although aiming for originality is admirable, why would Cassandra (who is now inhabited by Katie's soul) flirt with her own biological brother? Why would Katie's parents (portrayed in celebrity cameo roles by John Schneider and Denise Richards) be so lackadaisical about Katie's influencer career, even though they quit their jobs to support her work? SWITCHED is full of delightfully campy moments, like the UI of fictitious social media network The Social, but its desire to be perceived as easily watchable family fare that is light on the Christian message is thwarted by a confusing story that doesn't stick the landing. Even when you hear the description "genre-defying electro-acoustic duo" that does not even begin to describe the brilliance that is ARKAI. Jonathan Miron and Philip Sheegog are Julliard trained, but not limited by the constraints that classical training can sometimes put up - and perhaps even hold dear. The soundscapes that they are dreaming up and orchestrating are mind-bending, and you have to see it to believe it. They can often sound like a full orchestra of players, but it is just the two of them. And they generate some of the most beautiful, sweet tones, balance with some heavier rock elements that delight. I often find myself smiling just listening and watching them perform.Their recent release Crossroads is a journey. We spend time hearing all about it, and the many stories behind the music, as well as the gorgeous videos that shot for the 3 singles out thus far. We'll also hear about their early inspirations - amazingly Jonathan was handed a cello first, but had to switch to violin, and Philip wanted to play music listening to his sister play violin, and was invited to take up the cello. This type of beautiful symmetry and the universe being on their side shows up time and again in the story of ARKAI. On this week's show, the hosts begin by reviewing Babes, Pamela Adlon's (Better Things, Louie) directorial feature debut starring Ilana Glazer and Michelle Buteau. Through raunch-comedy and body horror, Babes explores childbirth and pregnancy through a refreshingly unromanticized lens, but does it succeed as a drama? Then, the three switch gears and turn to Interview With the Vampire, AMC's Anne Rice adaptation that's now in its second season. What a weird show! The series–starring Jacob Anderson as Louis de Pointe du Lac and Eric Bogosian as the titular cynical interviewer–brings the novel's queer subtext to the surface, and is camp in every sense of the word. Finally, the trio is joined by Mikael Wood, the Los Angeles Times' pop music critic to discuss Billie Eilish's latest album, Hit Me Hard and Soft. (You can read Wood's review here.) Produced with her brother Finneas, Hit Me Hard and Soft offers a new way of thinking about the 22-year-old, and features songs like “Birds of a Feather” and “Lunch,” a fun, lusty track about being into girls.
