Well, howdy neighbors! Fred Talley here from Faith Pest Control, coming to you from right here in our beautiful corner of the North Georgia Mountains. Living up here in Pickens County, we really do get the best of everything. We get the gorgeous changing leaves in the fall, the blooming dogwoods in the spring, and a front-row seat to nature all year round. But because we live right smack in the middle of all this beautiful nature, it means the local insect and rodent population is constantly knocking on our doors, looking for a warm place to stay and a free meal. A lot of folks call me up and say, “Fred, I think I’ll just call you whenever I see a bug, and you can come spray. Why on earth would I need you out here every single month?” It’s a fair question! But today, I want to share a little secret with you about how bugs operate up here in Jasper, and why a regular monthly pest control routine is the only real way to protect your home, your family, and your peace of mind. The Myth of the “One-and-Done” Spray A lot of people look at pest control like taking an aspirin—you only do it when you have a headache. But true, professional pest control is actually a lot more like changing the oil in your truck or keeping up with your garden. It's all about prevention. When we come out and apply a high-quality, professional-grade protective barrier around the perimeter of your home, that treatment doesn’t last forever. The intense North Georgia summer sun, our heavy mountain downpours, and even the natural breakdown of the material mean that any protective barrier starts to naturally wear thin after about 30 days. If you are only treating your home when you see a line of ants in the kitchen or a roach under the fridge, you are playing a game of “catch up.” By the time you actually see those pests out in the open, it means they've already established a hidden nest deep inside your walls, crawlspace, or attic weeks ago. The Power of the Monthly Perimeter Defense When you switch to a monthly protection plan, the entire strategy changes. Instead of chasing bugs around your living room with a can of spray, we focus almost all of our energy on the outside of your house. We create a continuous, unbroken shield around your foundation, windows, and doorways. Because we refresh it every month, the barrier never breaks down. Here is exactly what a monthly routine interrupts throughout the year: The Pest Breeding Cycles: Insects lay eggs at an alarming rate. A single female roach or ant can spark a massive population explosion in just a few weeks. Monthly treatments ensure that as new eggs hatch outside, the young nymphs hit our barrier and die before they can mature and reproduce. The Changing of the Guard: Pests don’t take vacations, they just change shifts. In the spring, we're fighting termites and carpenter ants. In the summer, it’s wasps, mosquitoes, and fleas. In the fall and winter, the mice and scorpions start looking for a warm spot near your heating vents. A monthly service adapts to what is actively trying to get into your house based on the exact time of year. Constant Inspections: Every time a technician from Faith Pest Control steps onto your property, they aren’t just spraying. They are inspecting. We look for early signs of termite activity, active wasp nests forming under your eaves, or a new crack in the foundation where a field mouse could squeeze in. Catching these things early saves you thousands of dollars down the road. Keepin’ the Tail Waggin’: Safe for the Whole Family I talk to a lot of neighbors who worry that monthly service means their home will be constantly filled with harsh chemicals. Let me set your mind at ease: that is simply not how we do things. Because our monthly program is so effective at keeping the bugs outside, we rarely ever have to spray a drop of liquid pesticide inside your living spaces after the initial cleanup. We use targeted, low-toxicity products precisely placed where bugs live, and our exterior treatments are entirely pet and family-friendly once dry. My goal is to protect your home while keeping the environment completely safe for your kids and your four-legged friends. Fred’s Pro Tip: Think of pest control like a castle moat. If you let the moat dry up for a month or two, the invaders walk right across. Keeping that moat full every single month means the inside of your castle stays completely secure. My Iron-Clad “Make You Happy” Guarantee Termite and pest control work is serious business. It involves the safety of your structure and the health of your family. I have never believed in cutting corners just to save a buck, and I never will. That's just not how I do business. I want the chance to earn your business and be your regular bug man. That's why I back up our monthly service with the absolute best guarantee in the industry: If you hire me to protect your home and, at the end of 30 days, you are not 100% HAPPY, I will come back and retreat your home for FREE. And I'll keep on treating it for FREE until you tell me you are satisfied. If you’re still not happy, I will promptly and politely give YOU back every single penny of your money, plus an additional $25.00 for your time and trouble. Period. You shouldn’t have to live in fear of what’s scurrying behind your baseboards. Let us handle the bugs so you can get back to enjoying life up here in the mountains. Summer “Stingers” in the North Georgia Mountains: What's Buzzing Around Your Eaves? By Fred Talley, Faith Pest Control Well, neighbors, summer has officially arrived in Jasper. The sun is out, the lake is calling, and if you're like me, you're spending as much time as possible on the back deck or out in the yard. But there's a downside to this beautiful North Georgia weather: The stingers are out in force. Up here in the mountains—from Talking Rock to Big Canoe—summer is the peak season for things that fly, buzz, and pack a punch. At Faith Pest Control, we're getting the calls every day from folks who walked into a yellow jacket nest or found a “paper lantern” hanging over their front door. Here's the breakdown of who's who in the world of North Georgia stinging insects this summer: The “Ground Troublemakers”: Yellow Jackets If there's one bug that can ruin a backyard BBQ faster than a summer thunderstorm, it's the Yellow Jacket. The Hiding Spot: Unlike honeybees, these guys love to build nests in the ground—often in old rodent burrows or under railroad ties. The Danger: They are notoriously cranky. If you run a lawnmower over their “front door,” they'll come out swinging. And unlike a honeybee, a yellow jacket can sting you multiple times without losing its stinger. The “Eavesdroppers”: Paper Wasps You've seen these nests—they look like an upside-down umbrella with open honeycombs. The Hiding Spot: They love our North Georgia architecture! You'll find them under the eaves of your house, behind shutters, or tucked into the corners of your porch. The Behavior: They aren’t quite as aggressive as yellow jackets, but if you get too close while painting or cleaning your windows, they'll defend their home with a painful sting. The “Gentle Giants”: European Hornets These guys are big—sometimes over an inch long—and they can look pretty scary when they're bumping against your porch light at night. The Hiding Spot: They usually nest in hollow trees, but they aren’t above moving into an attic or a wall void if they find a gap in your siding. The “Attraction”: They are the only wasps in our area that are active at night. If you leave your porch lights on, don’t be surprised to see these big fellas circling the glow. The “Drill Bits”: Carpenter Bees While the males don’t have stingers (they're just “all bark and no bite” hovering in your face), the females do. The Damage: Their real “sting” is to your wallet. They bore perfectly round holes into your cedar siding, decks, and fascia boards. If left alone, they'll turn your beautiful mountain home into a piece of Swiss cheese. Fred's “Stay Safe” Summer Tips Before you grab a can of spray and head out there, keep these things in mind: Watch the Flight Path: Before you start weeding or mowing, stand back and watch your yard for a minute. If you see bugs consistently flying in and out of a hole in the ground or a crack in your siding, you've found a nest. Avoid “The Swat”: If a wasp flies near you, try to stay calm. Swatting at them is interpreted as an attack, and that's when they call for backup. Check the Kids’ Playsets: Check under the slides and inside the “fort” area of backyard playsets once a week. These are favorite hiding spots for wasps. Don’t Block the Exit: If you find wasps entering a hole in your house siding, do not caulk that hole shut while they are inside. They will find a way out—and “out” might mean chewing through your drywall into your living room! We've Got the Gear to Handle It Look, I know a lot of folks like to “DIY” their pest control, but when it comes to stinging insects, it can get dangerous fast—especially if you have an undiscovered allergy. At Faith Pest Control, we have the protective gear and the specialized treatments to knock out these nests safely. We live and work right here in Jasper, and we want to make sure your summer stays fun and sting-free. Give us a shout at Faith Pest Control, and let's keep those “mountain stingers” in the woods where they belong! The post Summer “Stingers” in the North Georgia Mountains: What's Buzzing Around Your Eaves? first appeared on Faith Pest Control.
The Jasper Homeowner's Essential Pest Control Checklist By Fred Talley, Faith Pest Control Living up here in the North Georgia Mountains, we get the best of everything—the views, the fresh air, and a front-row seat to every season. But let's be honest: our neck of the woods is also “Bug Central.” Between the heavy woods in **Bent Tree** and the lake breeze over in **Big Canoe**, our homes are under constant pressure from critters looking for a free meal and a warm bed. At **Faith Pest Control**, I always tell my neighbors that a little “mountain maintenance” goes a long way. If you want to keep the ants out of your sweet tea and the termites out of your floorboards, here is my personal checklist for every Jasper homeowner this season. ### 1. The “Six-Inch Rule” for Foundation The quickest way to invite termites and wood-decaying beetles into your home is to give them a “bridge.” * **Pull back the mulch:** Keep your pine straw or wood mulch at least six inches away from your wooden siding or foundation. * **Check your “soil-to-wood” contact:** If you've got wooden stairs or lattice touching the dirt, you're basically ringing the dinner bell for subterranean termites. ### 2. Gutter and Drainage Audit Water is the #1 attractant for pests in North Georgia. * **Clear the debris:** Clogged gutters create “micro-swamps” where mosquitoes breed and carpenter ants love to nest. * **Extend your downspouts:** Make sure rainwater is moving *away* from your crawlspace. A damp crawlspace is a playground for camel crickets (those “sprickets” we all hate) and wood roaches ### 3. Seal the “Mountain Breezes” If a breeze can get under your door, a **Kudzu Bug** or a **Stink Bug** can get in with it. * **Check your door sweeps:** If you can see daylight under your front door, it's time for a new sweep. * **Screen your vents:** Make sure your attic and crawlspace vents have tight-fitting, heavy-duty mesh to keep out “the big stuff” like squirrels and raccoons. ### 4. Manage the “Greenery” We love our trees, but they shouldn’t be touching your roof. * **The “Two-Foot Trim”:** Keep tree limbs and shrubs trimmed at least two feet away from your house. These branches act as a “highway” for ants and spiders to bypass your ground-level treatments and walk right onto your roof or into your windows. ### 5. Kitchen & Pantry Lockdown As the weather shifts, ants are on a mission for moisture and sugar. * **Seal the snacks:** Invest in some airtight containers for your flour, sugar, and pet food. * **Wipe the “invisible” spills:** Ants follow pheromone trails. Even if a spill looks dry, the “scent” is still there. A quick wipe-down with soapy water breaks that trail. ### Don't Tackle the Mountain Alone I know you're busy enjoying the North Georgia lifestyle—maybe hitting the trails or spending a Saturday at the Jasper Farmers Market. You shouldn’t have to spend all your free time chasing bugs. At **Faith Pest Control**, we specialize in the specific pests that call Jasper home. We don’t just treat your house; we protect your peace of mind with a professional perimeter barrier that stands up to our mountain weather. **Give us a call today, and let's cheThe post The Jasper Homeowner's Essential Pest Control Checklist first appeared on Faith Pest Control.
Spring is Popping in North Georgia—And So Are the Bugs! **By Fred Talley, Faith Pest Control** Well, neighbors, it's that time of year again. The daffodils are peeking out, the Coosawattee is flowing high, and if you look closely at the sunny side of your house here in Jasper, you'll see exactly what I'm seeing: **The bugs are waking up.** Up here in the North Georgia Mountains, our spring is beautiful, but it's also the “Grand Opening” for every creepy-crawly that's been hitching a ride in your insulation or hiding under your leaf litter all winter. At **Faith Pest Control**, we're already getting the calls. Here's what's shaking off the winter slumber and heading your way this month: ### 1. The “Big Three” of Spring Home Invasions While everything is waking up, three pests usually lead the charge into our North Georgia homes: * **Ants (Especially Odorous House Ants):** They're thirsty and hungry. As soon as the ground warms up, scouts start looking for a sugary snack in your kitchen. If you see one, there are a thousand more following that scent trail. * **Termites:** This is the big one. Spring is “Swarm Season.” When we get those warm days right after a spring rain, subterranean termites send out winged “swarmers” to start new colonies. If you see what looks like flying ants inside your house, don’t wait—give us a call. * **Carpenter Bees:** If you've got a wooden deck or cedar siding, you know the drill. These “flying drill bits” are waking up to hover around your eaves and start boring those perfectly round holes. ### 2. The Overwintering “Wake-Up Call” Remember those **Brown Marmorated Stink Bugs** and **Kudzu Bugs** that disappeared back in November? They didn’t leave; they just went into your attic and wall voids. Now that the sun is hitting your siding, they think it's summertime. They'll start crawling out of your light fixtures and vents, looking for a way back outside. > **Fred's Pro Tip:** Don’t squish ’em! You'll end up with a literal “stink” and a stain on your carpet. Vacuum them up and toss the bag. ### 3. Mosquitoes and Ticks are Checking In With the spring rains filling up every discarded pot and low spot in the yard, the mosquito larvae are ready to go. And if you're out hiking the trails around Bent Tree or Big Canoe, the ticks are officially active. It only takes one warm week for them to climb to the top of the tall grass waiting for a host. ### How to Get Ahead of the Spring Rush You don't have to wait until you're outnumbered to take action. Here's what you can do right now: * **Clean Those Gutters:** Clogged gutters are a breeding ground for mosquitoes and a “highway” for ants to get into your roofline. * **Mulch Mindfully:** Keep your pine straw or mulch a few inches away from your foundation. Piling it right against the house is like laying out a welcome mat for termites. * **Check the Seals:** Look at your door sweeps and window screens. If a breeze can get in, a bug can too. Let Faith Handle the Rest At **Faith Pest Control**, we know the North Georgia terrain because we live here. We don't just spray and pray; we look at the biology of these mountain pests to stop them before they get a foothold in your living room. Whether you're in Jasper, Ellijay, or Blue Ridge, we're ready to help you enjoy the spring without the “uninvited guests.” Give us a shout, and let's get your home protected. **Happy Spring, everybody!** The post Spring is Popping in North Georgia—And So Are the Bugs! first appeared on Faith Pest Control.
The “Kudzu Bug” Invasion: What You Need to Know in North Georgia By Fred Talley, Faith Pest Control If you've lived around Jasper, Ellijay, or anywhere in the North Georgia Mountains for more than a few years, you've probably noticed a “new” neighbor that's making itself right at home. I'm talking about the Kudzu Bug (Megacopta cribraria). Now, we're used to ladybugs and those pesky Brown Marmorated Stink Bugs, but these little guys are a different breed of nuisance. If you've seen small, olive-brown, square-shaped beetles clustering on your white siding or swarming your soybean crops, you've met the Kudzu Bug. Where Did They Come From? They aren’t from around here. They first showed up in Georgia back in 2009—right down the road in Hoschton—and they've spread like wildfire across the Southeast. They're named after their favorite snack: Kudzu. Since we've got plenty of “the vine that ate the South” up here in the mountains, the Kudzu Bug thinks North Georgia is a five-star buffet. Why Are They a Problem for You? While they love kudzu, they don't stop there. Here's why they're a headache for homeowners in Jasper and beyond: The Smell and the Stain: Just like a stink bug, if you squish a Kudzu Bug, it releases a foul-smelling defense chemical. Even worse? That liquid can actually cause a mild skin burn or “stain” your skin and your home's siding. The “Home Invasion”: As the weather starts to cool down in the fall, these bugs look for a warm place to spend the winter. They love light-colored surfaces (like white or beige siding) because they soak up the sun. Once they find a gap in your windows or trim, they'll crawl inside by the hundreds. Agricultural Impact: If you're a farmer or gardener, watch out. They love legumes—specifically soybeans and snap beans. They can do some real damage to a crop if left unchecked. How to Keep Them Out At Faith Pest Control, we believe an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Here is what I recommend for my North Georgia neighbors: Seal the Gaps: Take a look at your doors and windows. If you see light coming through, a Kudzu Bug can get through. Use a high-quality caulk to seal cracks and replace worn-out weatherstripping. Check Your Screens: Make sure your window screens are tight and don’t have any holes. Don't Squish ‘Em: If they get inside, don’t reach for the fly swatter. Use a vacuum with a hose attachment to suck them up, then empty the bag or canister into a bucket of soapy water. This avoids the smell and the staining. Professional Perimeter Treatment: The best way to stop an invasion is to stop them before they ever get inside. We apply a specialized exterior treatment that creates a barrier they can’t cross. We're Here to Help Living in the North Georgia Mountains is a blessing, but the bugs can be a chore. If you're tired of seeing these brown specks all over your beautiful home, give us a call at Faith Pest Control. We know the Jasper and North Georgia area like the back of our hand, and we know exactly how to handle a Kudzu Bug problem. Stay bug-free, neighbors! The post The “Kudzu Bug” Invasion: What You Need to Know in North Georgia first appeared on Faith Pest Control.

In this episode of the STR Data Lab, Jamie Lane and co-host Scott Sage discuss short-term rental trends and market performance for the month of May. Jamie shares insights from his personal experiences managing his short-term rental property in the North Georgia Mountains. The discussion highlights a 6% year-over-year increase in STR listings, a 1% dip in occupancy, a 6% rise in ADR, and a 4.8% growth in RevPAR. They note that while nights booked are slightly down by 0.3%, shorter lead times for bookings are contributing to this trend. The conversation covers the implications of global events on travel and the STR market, including potential impacts on bookings from increased oil prices due to Middle Eastern conflicts. Jamie addresses how the economic landscape, job growth, and consumer confidence are influencing the industry. A key takeaway is that although demand and occupancy are fluctuating, shorter booking windows are becoming the norm. Scott and Jamie also analyze review scores based on operator size, revealing that smaller operators tend to have higher review scores but larger operators are improving the most year-over-year. They attribute this to both Airbnb's efforts to remove underperforming listings and operators becoming more attentive to review management. The episode concludes with advice for hosts and managers to adapt their pricing and booking strategies based on these trends, encouraging vigilance and real-time market analysis to remain competitive. Join me as I take you through the mind of a newly crowned 50 year old. Yes, it is just a number but, for me, it was a stark reminder of how fast this little stint called "life" truly is. As part of my yearlong celebration, I took on the Cruel Jewel 100, one of the most grueling 100-milers on the east coast! It lived up to its "cruel" reputation but was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life, especially since I got to share the experience with a good friend of mine. It's not always where you are, but who you're with. The Cruel Jewel 100 is a 104-mile foot race which takes place in the beautiful Chattahoochee National Forest of the North Georgia Mountains. The race comes equipped with rocks, roots, waterfalls, lush green hardwood forests, spectacular wildlife and 33,000 feet of climbing along the way! I'll walk you through my preparation and race day highs/lows along this extremely memorable 34 hour 23 minute journey.

John Ryan, chief marketing officer of Georgia MLS, joins host Carol Morgan for this week's Atlanta Real Estate Forum Radio episode. In this podcast segment, Ryan discusses the current state of the housing market and his outlook for the future. Due to its rich business and employment opportunities, Atlanta maintains an active, dynamic marketplace that ebbs and flows with new industry. There were 75,000 homes that have sold this year so far, a 2.1% decrease from 2023. However, the “hot” market is fading away as Atlanta months of supply (MOS) is currently 3.8 months, according to Georgia MLS listings. Its listings have also increased to 17,800, a dramatic shift from 7,000 to 8,000 listings in past years. This is still a far cry from 6 months of inventory which has long been the normal in Atlanta. Interest rates continue to hover at 6.4%, which could be a confidence boost for buyers and sellers in today's marketplace after years of higher rates. The first-time homebuyer demographic is still challenged by these rate fluctuations, but there is hope for rate stability in 2025. Even with positive shifts in MOS and interest rates, there is still an overflowing demand in comparison to supply. Housing prices remain elevated with a median price of $400,000 across the Atlanta market and new construction listings are growing but still only represent 10% of total listings. “As we move into 2025, those rates should hover a little just above the 6% mark,” said Ryan. “That is still a reasonable rate, as we've seen historically, to make people move one way or the other within the marketplace.” As the market continues to shift and move around, Ryan emphasizes working closely with real estate professionals that can take you step-by-step through the process of buying or selling your home. Having trained agents and lenders on your side ensures that everything runs smoothly from listing to closing. Tune in to the full interview above to learn more about Georgia MLS or visit www.GeorgiaMLS.com. About Georgia MLS Georgia MLS is the largest real estate marketplace in Georgia, serving 52,600 agents and 4,600 brokerage offices across the state. Its offices can be found in the North Georgia Mountains, through metro Atlanta and all along the Georgia coast. What does Georgia MLS bring to the Atlanta housing market? The multiple listing service provides opportunities for brokerages and agents to connect and work together for their clients. Georgia MLS is also a proud founding partner of the Southeast MLS alliance – Georgia MLS, Charleston MLS, Charlotte MLS and Nashville MLS. “We are going to be providing active and off market data to our members, all under one platform, so our members will have access to three of the most desirable cities in the southeast,” said Ryan. “We are just trying to connect the dots of providing information, and then also a referral network that they have clients that are moving to different areas.” A special thank you to Denim Marketing for sponsoring Atlanta Real Estate Forum Radio. One word. Carnage! Our mission is to help runners take their next step along their ultra running journey. With this series of Race Spotlight episodes, we want to introduce you to races that you may or may not have heard of by speaking directly to the Race Directors to give you all the information you need. This week, we take a look at the Cruel Jewel 100. The race takes place in the Chattahoochee National Forest in the North Georgia Mountains. The race is 104 miles, with over 33,000 feet of gain/loss. That is over 300 feet of gain per mile. The race does have a 48 hour cutoff. For perspective, the race has been around for 8 years and has had only 5 finishers run it in a sub 24. The race is tough. But, as ultra runners, we choose tough. Joining us on the show are the co-race directors, Sarah Snyder and Sean Lawford, to help give us the inside scoop about everything the Cruel Jewel 100 has to offer. Enjoy the show? Please leave us rating and comment to share the love! We appreciate you taking the time to join us. While I was in the North Georgia Mountains, I got a chance to talk with Shannon Mitchell and Christine Gautreaux, co-owners of Women Connected in Wisdom. Their business model includes an online community, podcast, book, and an annual conference where authors speak. Both women live in Atlanta and have multiple businesses.Shannon bowled me over when she shared during the interview that she took her unemployment checks during Covid to start up her business SheaLo Glow. Now three years later this twenty-something queen has a storefront shop as well as an online business!Shannon also shares her story of a 12-year separation from her mother and her mother's family, and how it affected her identity and connection to her cultural community. We also learn about her positive relationship with Christina and how they both prioritize openness and honesty. Christine, a professional speaker and social worker, has written books that have opened doors for her and given her opportunities to speak at conferences and events. Christine noticed that many other women had incredible stories and voices, but had not yet been published. Together she and Shannon, decided to create a podcast and a compilation book featuring 18 authors, most of whom had never been published before. Their mission is to get these stories and voices out into the world and into the hands of readers. Christine believes that books are valuable tools for entrepreneurs and caregivers alike and can open doors that might not otherwise be available.Called Women Connected in Wisdom, the book and podcast focuses on the eight dimensions of wellness and the importance of uprooting oppression, acknowledging the unique challenges faced by Black women. The podcast also includes recommendations for books each episode.Shannon shares her love for shea butter and their skincare routine. Lastly, we hear about Christine's love of her Interplay performance group in Atlanta that deals with big historic issues through movement and storytelling.Resources Mentioned in ShowWomenconnectedinwisdompodcast.comhttps://www.shealoglo.com/https://www.amazon.com/Stillpoint-Self-Care-Playbook-Caregivers-Breathe/dp/1732370400Support the showMother tree Network Podcast--Where Spirituality and Earth Wisdom Meet Racial Justice and Women's Leadership. This week I'm sharing lessons from my experience Living in a Tiny House in the North Georgia Mountains. The idea of a month away came during the Winter Solstice Virtual Retreat. Leading up to the retreat I felt a need to journey with plants, and I said yes to this intuition even though I did not want to leave my beloved trees and I wasn't sure how i would lead the Winter Solstice Virtual retreat on the road. Nonetheless, I traveled to California and stayed with a friend who offered a tarot reading. There it came up--spend a month alone. This got reinforced during my plant journey where I told myself to spend a month alone--preferably somewhere warm--was my heart's desire. To spend a month alone required me to put myself first. It meant leaving my husband, my son, the house, the dog, the land we tend, my routines, all of the known for the unknown. But the payoff was enormous.I felt myself regenerating my energy as I walked the forested land nude when it was warm enough but always shoeless.I cried face down on the land when sexual abuse wounds got activated.I prayed for healing and wisdom when foster kid trauma got activated.By being mostly alone, I did not have the normal distractions.I couldn't project the blame onto others.I start this episode With my funniest memory and what the crows told me soon after I arrived. You can listen here to discover my biggest big takeaways:Slow is Good!Concentrate on the soil of my being rather than the seeds of my desires, projects and outward work. Good soil will cause seeds to sprout and root well--easily. Tend the soil--more than your ideas and plans--if you want your garden to produce.I was not afraid or lonely. The land and the crows, and the coyotes kept me company. I felt adopted into "the family of things" as Mary Oliver says.Saturn is in pisces--and we've got some unfinished healing from 1993-96.I have been able to see how this celestial movement reflected a previous time in my life where I "pretended" everything was okay but was struggling mightily with boundaries and self-care. Many of us will get to spiral through whatever was difficult regarding emotions and boundaries if we were alive in 1993-1996.Please, leave a review. It will help others to find the podcast.Support the showMother tree Network Podcast--Where Spirituality and Earth Wisdom Meet Racial Justice and Women's Leadership. Richard N1RBD's ham radio journey began when I joined a wilderness Search and Rescue (SAR) team which uses HTs for communications during call-outs. He does a lot of hiking and backpacking in the North Georgia Mountains and on the Appalachian Trail, so he felt his knowledge of the area could be helpful. He activated a few SOTA summits with VHF, and was amazed at how far he could get from the summit of a 3000ft mountain running 5 watts. He then discovered Parks on the Air (POTA). Living 7 minutes from a POTA park, he tried some VHF activations with no success. Apparently, there is a huge difference between getting 4 QSOs from a summit vs 10 QSOs from a low-lying park when running VHF! He started his CW journey in January of 2020 using online resources and apps. His first CW QSO was on March 3, 2020 using a CW Morse Nano straight key to chase a POTA operator for a park to park contact. A few months later, he finally worked up the nerve to attempt a CW SOTA activation. On July 4, I garnered 15 CW QSOs, including my Elmer! At this point, I was officially hooked on CW. This year Mike Alberts, Courtney Joseph, Carmen Brockdorf, and Stephen Grieger were a few of the Floridians who took on the Cruel Jewel in the Chattahoochee National Forest of the North Georgia Mountains. This is a course that takes you on a wild ride through the Duncan Ridge from Vogel State Park to Blue Ridge and back. For Mike, Carmen, and Stephen… they all took on the “100” mile course that adds up to roughly 106 miles with 33,000 feet of gain and 33,000 feet of loss just to keep it interesting. Now for Courtney, she took on the 50 miler as her first ever 50 miler! The Cruel Jewel 50 is a point to point “50” miler that rounds up to roughly 56 total miles for 15,000 feet of gain and 15,000 feet of loss.

“Instead of being ashamed of doing what you do or being what you are, I ask two important questions: Why not celebrate it? Why not be proud of the fact that the body you are in can do great things?” Mirna Valerio What is a runner? How do we define an athlete? What does it truly mean to be fit and healthy?Challenging stereotypes, today's guest demands that we broaden our limited definition of these terms. She may not be fast, but she runs. In fact she runs a lot, an impressive slew of ultramarathons to her name. She's also not skinny. In fact, she's big.250 pounds big.But Mirna Valerio is without a doubt a runner. In fact, the force of nature affectionately known as The Mirnavator is one of the most inspirational athletes I have ever met — a true ambassador of sport on a mission to empower women of all shapes and sizes to proudly embrace their bodies, expand their horizons, and own their truth.Carrying herself with grace, an intelligent self-confidence and a smile so gleeful it brightens all in her path, Mirna's appeal has less to do with her ability to run long distances and everything to do with her unapologetic celebration of her personal truth.Mirna's joyful self-acceptance is both real and rare. It's both authentic and bold. It's as infectious as it is inclusive. And it's incredibly empowering to the millions of people who suffer body shame issues silently. When she’s not running, the Brooklyn native (now living in the North Georgia Mountains with her husband and teenage son) is a Spanish teacher, diversity practitioner, cross-country coach, and author of the wildly popular blog Fat Girl Running. She also writes frequently for Women's Running Magazine and recently released a remarkable memoir I thoroughly enjoyed entitled, A Beautiful Work In Progress*.She’s been profiled in the Wall Street Journal and Runner's World and on NBC Nightly News. She’s also an ambassador for a variety of brands like REI, Merrell, Skirt Sports and Swiftwick. Just this week Mirna became one of the faces of JC Penney’s newly launched Here I Am campaign.I first came across Mirna’s story by way of a mini-documentary produced by REI called The Mirnavator that went viral. Hooked, I was determined to share her powerful story with you. Mirna more than delivered.Much like past episodes with Josh LaJaunie, Adam Sud, David Clark and my most recent episode with Charlie Jabaley, this is an incredibly inspiring underdog every person story. But unlike those tales, Mirna's journey is not one marked by dramatic before and after photos. On the contrary, this is a story about body acceptance and body positivity. It's a conversation about self-empowerment and self-acceptance. It’s about tackling stereotypes, overcoming prejudice and the importance of inclusion. And it's an exchange about the need to redefine how we think about and define athleticism, the spirit of sport, and fitness in general. But more than anything, this is a conversation about owning your truth.I adore Mirna and I absolutely love this conversation. I think you will too. Please stick around to the very end for a treat. In addition to her impressive accomplishments, Mirna is also an extremely talented, Julliard-trained opera singer. I was able to convince her to take us out with her angelic, etheral voice. It's insane!Peace + Plants, See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
