Before ILIA, Sasha had a career in branding where she worked both at an agency as well as in house at brands like Saje and Urban Decay. Alyssa Greenberg is a freelance photographer based in NYC with a focus in lifestyle, fashion and portraiture and has worked with some of the biggest names in brands and entertainment. Back in 2015, after having gone swimming in a lake with her friends, Alyssa's right eye unknowingly became infected with Acanthamoeba Keratitis, a parasite, that resulted in 2 cornea transplants and ultimately completely lost her vision in her right eye which is the eye she used to shoot with. While she says that she wouldn't wish what happened to her on her worst enemy, she is actually grateful it happened to her because it entirely shifted her perspective and view of life for the better. This life changing hurdle only reinforced her deep love of photography and she decided to adapt and persevere. She trained her left eye to be her "shooting eye" and says that losing her vision has actually driven her to become an even better photographer. On this episode we discuss her background into how she got into photography in the first place, she walks us through her whole process of having lost her vision and how she coped, what she learned about people and how they deal with pain, and her biggest learnings from going through it, we talk about the importance of being truly grateful (specifically for your health), why your passion doesn't necessarily need to be your carer, finding the small things to actually be the biggest victories and getting comfortable with adapting no matter the circumstance. Today's episode is with Rachel Liverman the founder of Glowbar, a no fluff facial spa that offers 30 minute customizable facials at $65 dollars. This is Rachel's second time on the podcast and I invited her back because she, like the most of us, has REALLY been tested when it comes to her business. Glowbar had only been open for 9 months before having to shut down due to the pandemic. Her business was entirely closed for 6 months since facials were deemed "phase-less" in New York and still found a way to pivot quickly, work on the foundation of her business and just last week she opened her second location now that facials are finally allowed in NY again and I just knew I had to have her on to talk about resilience and what this experience has taught her. On this episode I'm talking to her about the rollercoaster that was these 6 months, how she continued to stay so positive, the biggest learnings she's taken during this time, how she rallied her community to get Governor Cuomo's attention when he was ignoring the spa industry as a whole and of course, I ask her if her active ingredient has changed at all since the last time we spoke. Sophie Lord is a good human. Truly her values run deep and one of the most lovely things about this beautiful human is that she doesn’t shout from the rooftops about all the awesome things she does, instead, she just makes value judgments and strives to be better than she has had shown to her in her career as Art Director for the likes of Bauer Media and Pacific Magazines. Sophie unequivocally rejects the messages from corporate execs that the colour green and Asians on a cover won’t sell mags. As a result of this misguided advice, Sophie has developed an MO to raise the bar, but she’s not necessarily spruiking a diversity and inclusivity policy, she’s just living it. She’s not necessarily an environmental ambassador, instead, she makes conscious decisions to support small businesses that consider the life cycle of their product’s consumption. She’s not a paid-up mouthpiece for the industry but she has advocated for better support for bridal businesses through the tidal wave of CV19. She truly is a champion for good. Being the editor of Hello May, a bridal magazine with heart, is one of the many strings to Sophie’s bow. Sophie says she felt like the bridal industry needed a breath of fresh air and authenticity and so she set about doing things differently to the big brand publishing companies. Printed on recycled paper stock with soy-based inks, printed in Australia, she is on the front line of changing the magazine landscape. As Sophie says, independent publishers are kind of having a moment. While the big brands and titles are closing around them, Sophie and her team are weathering the pandemic and regaining momentum after an initial pause. This conversation was a joy to record with Sophie and will be incredibly valuable to vendors, photographers, wedding gown designers, stylists, and all of the creatives who bring our weddings to life. Seeing and Forgiving Without ShameAired Thursday, June 4, 2020 at 2:00 PM PST / 5:00 PM ESTSometimes when there is pain or injustice, we don’t really want to look. Sometimes that can be because we’ve been taught that what we focus on expands. Sometimes it’s because it hurts too much. Yet we have to feel to heal. What’s happening now is much more complex than simply loving people with darker skin. It requires deep changes in law and administration. Though it is inspiring to think of the freedom and transformation that will come from this unprecented time on the planet it is also time of great pain, which it requires us to look honestly without going into shame.
