The Glossy Beauty Podcast
Sports agent Jacki Gemelos on beauty's WNBA sponsorship opportunity, plus industry news

The Glossy Beauty Podcast

The WNBA kicked off its new season last week with beauty brands lining up to gain access to the league's growing cohort of fans.  In a gold rush that started around 2020, some of the industry's top brands have entered into multi-year sponsorships with the league or its top players. The most recent, Fenty's sponsorship of the New York Liberty, was announced earlier this month and kicked off on Saturday's home game opener with several activations including a "Gloss Bomb glam cam" where fans show off their beauty look.  The NY Liberty, a top team in the league, has also received sponsorships from L'Oréal-owned brands Essie nail polish and NYX color cosmetics. Meanwhile, Amorepacific-owned Laneige became the Phoenix Mercury's official sponsor last year, mass hair-care brand Odele Beauty sponsors the Minnesota Lynx, and Glossier has been a league sponsor since 2020.  What's more, Youth To The People has partnered with the Seattle Storm, and L'Oréal-owned Urban Decay was the official L.A. Sparks sponsor for two seasons. Plus, the Chicago Sky has partnerships with Covergirl, Olay and hair-care band Jamaican Mango and Lime. But perhaps one of the biggest deals is Sephora's sponsorship of the league's newest team, San Francisco's Golden State Valkyries, who will now play at the newly-renamed "Sephora Performance Center" in Oakland. And this is just a snapshot of the WNBA deals Glossy is tracking.  “There was limited broadcast for women's sports [a few years ago], and now we have record-breaking viewership, which has been just absolutely amazing,” said Jacki Gemelos, a former WNBA player and coach turned sports agent. “Major brands rarely built campaigns around female athletes. And now athletes like Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese, Alex Morgan and Simone Biles, just to name a few, are leading campaigns and not just being included.”  As previously reported by Glossy, attention from the beauty industry aligns with a sharp rise in WNBA audience attention. Viewership on ESPN was up 155% last season and, within this, viewership among people aged 18–34 rose by 164% and viewership among women increased by 165% year-over-year.  Glossy welcomed Gemelos to the podcast to discuss this change and provide context and advice for beauty execs looking to join in on the action. She provides context as to different types of deals, including the average costs and what makes a deal authentic. Gemelos is a lifelong basketball player who spent more than a decade playing professionally overseas and in the WNBA for the Chicago Sky and the Connecticut Sun. She was an assistant coach for the NY Liberty before joining Nike as an athlete community coordinator. Today, she's an agent at prestigious boutique firm Disrupt the Game, where she oversees deals for a roster of top talent.  In today's episode, Gemelos discusses everything beauty execs need to know about this cultural shift. But first, hosts Lexy Lebsack and Sara Spruch-Feiner discuss the top headlines of the week. This includes QVC's foray into 24/7 social commerce selling through TikTok Shop, plus a bird's eye view on how the beauty industry did in the first quarter of the year, according to a new report from Circana market research company.

Cape Town’s inner city was once facing a similar fate to inner cities around the country and around the world: urban decay. But thanks to a partnership between government and business leading to the formation of the Cape Town Partnership and Cape Town Central City Improvement District, this decline was reversed in time and led to a rejuvenation of the CBD. John Maytham speaks to Tim Harris, an economic development advisor and CCID board member (as well as former DA Member of Parliament and Wesgro CEO) on why he believes that Cape Town’s CBD turnaround could serve as a blueprint for other cities in decline.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Join me, Chad Law, as I recount my journey writing a book that explores the once-vibrant city now grappling with urban decay, homelessness, and drug addiction. Portland's struggles offer a glaring example of how political supermajorities can lead to urban decline, and how the migration of blue voters from cities like Portland is reshaping the political landscape across America. This episode isn't just about critiquing the chaos; it's a call for balanced governance to prevent such downfalls.Ever wondered how much celebrity influence really matters in politics? We're talking about the likes of Meghan McCain and Tim McGraw, questioning their authenticity and impact. From allegations against John McCain to McGraw's subtle liberal messaging, this episode scrutinizes those who seem to use their platforms for political leverage. Let's break down the perceived betrayals and call for genuine contributions to political discourse, steering clear of the hypocrisy that seems all too common.Taxes, wealth, and the controversial approaches to homelessness take center stage as I dissect proposals like Kamala Harris's wealth tax and contrast Denver's Housing First initiative with Douglas County's "Handouts Don't Help" campaign. Are traditional aid methods truly effective, or do they hinder progress? Explore these pressing issues with me, and stick around for some spirited college football banter and a Reagan-inspired call to action. Brace yourself for a lively and thought-provoking discussion that challenges conventional perspectives.

Directed by Diego Vicentini, this 2019 short film explores the lives of urban dwellers as they navigate the complexities of modern life. APT 17 isn't about jump scares or haunted spaces; it's a real-life drama that taps into the struggles of everyday people, dealing with themes of isolation, urban decay, and the challenges of city living. We couldn't help but draw a parallel to Project Pat's "Don't Save Her," where the film's characters find themselves in situations that are hard to break free from—reminding us that sometimes, trying to save someone (or something) isn't always the best course of action. In episode 133 of the Glow Journal podcast, host Gemma Dimond talks to the co-founder of Urban Decay and Caliray, Wende Zomnir. Wende Zomnir is beauty industry royalty. This is the woman behind the Naked Palette, Urban Decay's now-iconic 2010 launch that ensured this already wildly successful brand would go down in beauty history. Wende, alongside the tech mastermind that is Sandy Lerner, founded Urban Decay in 1996 with a distinctly grunge, “punk” if you will aesthetic. That in and of itself was revolutionary, when you consider that the most popular brands at the time were the likes of Clinique who were championing that very clean, very fresh look. Urban Decay was dark and bold and edgy, and thanks to some serious guerrilla marketing from Wende it quickly found its way into the hands of Gwen Stefani and Garbage front woman Shirley Manson. Urban Decay was acquired by the L'Oréal group in 2012, with Wende staying on as CCO until 2022, soon after launching her latest beauty venture- Caliray, a brand that harnesses Wende's love of and expertise in beauty with her longstanding passion for the environment and sustainability, with industry sources estimating that the brand generated between $20 and $25 million USD in retail sales in 2023. In this conversation, Wende shares what it was like officially working with Gwen Stefani about 20 years after hunting her down at a music festival, what she believes it takes to create a truly iconic beauty product, and the full story behind the now infamous Urban Decay Naked Palette.Read more at glowjournal.comFollow Caliray on Instagram @caliray.Stay up to date with Gemma on Instagram at @gemdimond and @glow.journal, or get in touch at hello@gemkwatts.com Hosted on Acast. Joe's presidency has been scrutinized for discrepancies in statements about inflation rates, which have been shown to rise to 9.1% contrary to the claimed 1.4%. Increased violent crime in major cities, demonstrated by a brutal assault in New York City, spotlights the need for improved safety measures and law enforcement. Key Takeaways from This Episode: A look into the creation of the beauty brand Caliray How to add more wellness into your workday Tips to support your skin health and well-being Life and business tips from Wende's journey Kristel recieved complimentary Caliray products to try prior to recording this episode. ABOUT Wende Zomnir In the mid-‘90s when the prestige beauty market was a boring sea of pink, red and beige, Wende envisioned a shake-up and unleashed Urban Decay on the old-school cosmetics industry, filling the void with makeup in an insane range of colors and shade names that fueled a beauty revolution. Urban Decay democratized beauty before anyone else and Wende paved the way for every beauty entrepreneur. No one had their "makeup as empowerment" attitude and slate of killer never-before-seen color. They democratized beauty before anyone else. and paved the way for every beauty entrepreneur.  But, Wende actually has more to say and is less afraid to say it at 50 than she was at 27 when she chased the California dream and couldn't find it until landing in Laguna Beach and falling in love. That beautiful place made her feel beautiful and empowered. In October 2021, Wende Zomnir co-founded Caliray, a West Coast beauty brand made of clean formulas, dirty minds, and sexy sustainability. The brand blends makeup with wellness to create innovative concoctions with innocent ingredients. Caliray is California Beauty Unfiltered – designed for less makeup, more living. Wende resides in Newport Beach, California, with her husband Doug Collier, and hilarious sons Crash and Cruz. In her spare time, Wende can be found surfing, diving, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, Crossfitting, playing tennis, hitting a volleyball, mountain biking, practicing yoga, running, and of course, knitting. Her secret ambitions are to become a painter and write a book. We are in the studio today and the category is ICONS ONLY, as we are joined by Billy Porter, so prepare to experience ALL the emotions from laughter to tears.  After years trying to make it in the entertainment industry on his own terms, Billy won a Tony for Kinky Boots, being his fabulous authentic self, heels and all. It was a turning point for Billy who then went on to win a Grammy, and then an Emmy for the hit TV show Pose, becoming the first black gay man to win that award in the process.  In the spirit of being 100% himself, Billy drops his seventh studio album, Black Mona Lisa, and in this episode we talk about how this has been an album 30 years in the making, as Billy tells me all about his journey, including the bullying and discrimination he has had to deal with and overcome. Billy broke my heart when he cried talking about the lessons he has learnt from going to trauma therapy, the worst year of his life which saw him be diagnosed with HIV, diabetes and being declared bankrupt, and how he finally found love for himself. And in true Billy fashion, he will make us laugh too as shares his love for English rugby men!  This is a really special conversation and I can't wait to share it with you. If you love Billy as much as I do, get in touch with me via social media @joshsmithhosts and make sure you come back next week for another inspiring episode of Reign. Love, Josh x P.S. As someone who has experienced hate and cyberbullying online, I know how it can affect you offline, too. Behind Her Empire

Wende Zomnir is the co-founder of the legendary beauty brand, Urban Decay, and most recently the co-founder of Caliray, a beauty and wellness brand. When Wende co-founded Urban Decay in 1996, there was no social media, and Sephora was still two years out from entering the U.S. She was a pioneer who broke the beauty industry with its “makeup as empowerment” attitude, eventually elevating it to the #1 brand spot at both Sephora and Ulta for years running – and is still one of the most successful beauty brands to date. After selling to L'Oreal in 2012 and spending her time leading the brand there, Wende eventually left and launched Caliray, a California-inspired brand focused on clean formulas, dirty minds and sexy sustainability. In this week's episode, we discuss Wende's journey from her marketing career to launching Urban Decay, including her meeting with co-founder Sandy Lerner, who co-founded Cisco Systems. Wende reflects on the early, less glamorous days of Urban Decay, her resourcefulness, and how the brand became such a success. We also talk about her new brand Caliray, and the differences in starting a brand today compared to when Urban Decay launched and the biggest surprises & learnings so far. Wende shares her advice on why you need more than just passion to build a successful business, why having a strong self-worth is crucial in business, the biggest skills that entrepreneurs need for any brand and so much more. In this episode, we'll talk to Wende about:* The quote "Luck is when preparation meets opportunity". [02:34]* Wende's early years in Texas and her relationship with makeup. [04:45]* Wende's life prior to Urban Decay. [10:31]* Connecting with the iconic Sandy Lerner. [12:09]* Pitching the concept and securing orders.[14:44]* Getting into Nordstrom and the crucial trait of resourcefulness. [19:13]* Wende's response to imitators of the Naked Palette and advice for female entrepreneurs facing similar challenges. [25:00] * Urban Decay's L'Oréal acquisition and transition. [28:31]* Maintaining healthy boundaries: separating self-worth from business. [32:25]* The inspiration for Wende's new beauty brand, Caliray. [34:48]* Challenge's Wende had to navigate while building Caliray. [40:11]* Essential skill during Urban Decay's early days. [43:10]* Advice for entrepreneurs who are scared to put their idea out.
