"Hypertensive disorders with onset during pregnancies are among the leading causes of maternal and infant mortality and morbidity in the U.S. and can have far-reaching consequences for the long-term health of the mother and child. In Dr. Jerome Adams' recent Call to Action to recognize and address hypertension control as a public health priority, the former Surgeon General referenced the success of health care providers who have promoted shared management of hypertension through self-measured blood pressure monitoring (SMBP), empowering patients through blood pressure (BP) management and goal setting. It's not an unusual recommendation— SMBP is well accepted in primary care for managing hypertension — but its use in pregnancy has not been routine. That's beginning to change for several reasons." Lauren Demosthenes is an obstetrician-gynecologist. She shares her story and discusses her KevinMD article, "Hypertension is killing pregnant mothers. Blood pressure monitoring can help." #252 Join the Facebook Group for men: https://www.facebook.com/groups/TheGreatManWithin Inquire about the Great Man Masterminds: Hello@DominickQ.com -------------------------------- You may not always be able to control the quantity of sleep you get (see: parents of young children)… ….but you do have control over many of the factors that contribute to the quality of sleep you get. Today I'll give you 10 of those best practices. But first… The 2 Components of Quality Sleep For many years I found myself frustrated and confused by my seemingly chronic state of fatigue despite getting the requisite 7-8 hours of sleep. What I found for me personally was 1/3 of the sleep equation was quality of sleep. 2/3 was the quality of sleep. What I needed to first understand were the 2 components of quality sleep*: *(Descriptions below from the Oura Ring sleep tracking app). Deep Sleep: Deep sleep is the most restorative and rejuvenating sleep stage During deep sleep your muscles grow and repair Immune system is refreshed Brain flushes out toxins Usually, you get more deep sleep during the early stages of your sleep On average, adults spend 15-20% of total sleep time in deep sleep This % decreases with age over time REM (Rapid Eye Movement Sleep): REM sleep is associated with dreaming, memory consolidation and creativity REM plays an important role in re-energizing your mind and body Typically, you get more REM sleep during the latter half of your sleep On average, the optimal amount for healthy adults starts from 1.5 hours but slightly decreases with age The punchline was, I had no way of calibrating the quality of my sleep, but I suspected it was trash (turns out, it was). So, when I learned how to impact the quality of my sleep – and how to measure it with the Oura Ring – naturally my sleep quality increased. I started feeling more refreshed in the morning, fewer dips in the middle of the day, and fewer crash-landings early in the evening. The 10 Practices to Enhance the Quality of Your Sleep #1. Align Your Sleep Schedule with Your Circadian Rhythm (your body's natural sleep cycle) In Dr. Matthew Walker's book Why We Sleep, he outlines the two biological forces that dictate when your body feels the need to sleep: Your Circadian Rhythm “Sleep Pressure” via adenosine (more on this in best practice #9 below) Your genetics determine your circadian rhythm. In simplest terms, you're either a night owl or a morning person. If your lifestyle is designed and aligned to support your circadian rhythms, life is good. If not, it can have tragic consequences. For example, in Why We Sleep, Dr. Walker talks about how night owl's get the serious short end of the stick based on society's value on “early to bed early to rise.” Turns out night owls, in an effort to keep up with the societal norms, suffer from higher rates of anxiety, depression and stress related illnesses than morning people. Why? Because they go to bed later, get up earlier, sacrifice quantity and quality of sleep. Over the long haul this has serious consequences on physical, emotional and mental well-being. #2. Establish a 90-Minute Bed Time Window Your body wants to know when it's “sleep time” and when it's “wake time.” If you're going to bed at dramatically different times every night (ie 9:00pm, 1:00am, 10:30pm), your body gets confused. It eventually rebels and makes you tired when you're trying to do work, and awake when you're trying to sleep. Establishing a regular 90-minute window – mine is 10:00pm to 11:30pm – which you can aim to hit 4-5 nights a week can train your body to naturally start to wind down on a more consistent basis. #3. No Food in Your Last 1-2 Hours Before Sleep It's as simple as this: if your body is expending energy breaking down the rack-o-ribs you just pounded, it's not able to invest its energy in deep sleep repairing your brain and flushing toxins. Further, if you're eating sugary stuff – wine, ice cream or heavy carbs that get converted to glucose – the sugar spike will also kick you out of quality sleep. Do your best to eat lighter at night, and to have your last bite of food #4. Reduce Liquids Last 60-90 Minutes Before Bed. If you're like me, drinking water before bed is a surefire way to wakeup 2-3 times during the evening. That always knocks me out of deep and REM sleep cycles. Instead, I hydrate for my last time about 90 minutes before bed, allowing me to sleep straight through the night. First thing I do when I wake up is drink a quart of lemon water to hydrate myself. #5. No Screens in the Last 30 Minutes (Ideally 60-90 minutes) I have 3 years worth of sleep data on my Oura Ring and the numbers don't lie: On the nights when I'm doing 2 hour Zoom calls between 7-9:00pm, I get 33-50% less deep sleep than on the evenings when I'm not blasting my eye sockets with blue light. Power down the devices in the last 30-90 minutes of your night to increase your odds of getting higher quality sleep. You can also consider Blue Light Blocker Glasses. #6. Get a Sleep Tracking Device to Monitor Your Sleep Quality In my opinion, one of the best investments you could ever make to your long term physical, mental and emotional well-being is in a high quality sleep tracking device. It's critical to know which of your habits and behaviors are impacting the quality of your sleep. My recommendation is the Oura Ring, which is $299. While not inexpensive, I like to think about the impact on the years and decades of my future well-being (ie avoiding the time and financial costs of stress related illnesses). It's the most respected sleep tracking device on the market (as endorsed by the NBA and used by many of the branches of the US Special Forces). Note: I am not compensated by Oura in any way. #7. Sleep in Cool Conditions According to the NY Times: Studies have found that in general, the optimal temperature for sleep is quite cool, around 60 to 68 degrees Fahrenheit. For some, temperatures that fall too far below or above this range can lead to restlessness. You can access the article here. Also, I purchased the ChiliPad, which is like a heating blanket…but in reverse. I was an over-heater at night, waking up 3-4 times a night in sweat. After buying the Chilipad, I sleep cool throughout the night. #8. Sleep in Blackout Darkness To get my full night of sleep, I typically wake at 6:30am. Where I live, the sun rises somewhere around 5:30-5:45am. If I allowed the sun to wake me up, I'd shortchange 30-60 minutes of my later stage sleep cycle…which is where REM sleep resides. Some people will install blackout curtains in their room. I prefer a sleep mask like this $10 version on Amazon. #9. Caffeine: Educate Yourself on How it Effects Your Sleep Quality I'm a HUGE coffee guy and that's not changing anytime soon. But I'm also very well-educated on the impacts of caffeine half-life on sleep quality. In episode #520 of the Tim Ferriss Podcast, Michael Pollan talks about how the quarter-life of caffeine is 12 hours. Meaning, if you had a cup of coffee at noon, ¼ of that caffeine is still in your system. The sleep experts agree that this will mess with the quality of your sleep, specifically deep sleep. Going back to Why We Sleep by Dr Matthew Walker, the two biological forces that dictate when your body feels the need to sleep: Your Circadian Rhythm “Sleep Pressure” via adenosine “Sleep pressure” is caused by a chemical named adenosine. Here's the crash course on adenosine: From the moment you wake up, your body is producing adenosine The more adenosine that builds up, the sleepier you feel (hence the sleep pressure) Caffeine, however, blocks the adenosine receptor sites, so the adenosine has nowhere to go…but it remains in your system Caffeine has a long half-life (meaning, it takes 5-6 hours to eliminate half of the caffeine in your system) So, if you're drinking caffeine late in the day, you'll have a full day's build-up of adenosine but your body is still breaking down the caffeine So what do I do about this? I finish my caffeine by 9:30-10:00am. I know I'm still processing caffeine when I go to sleep, but I'm getting enough deep sleep and love my coffee enough to be cool with the tradeoff ;-) I also do a quarterly caffeine detox. Meaning, I'll take a 7-14 day hiatus from caffeine to flush my system of caffeine and all the adenosine that'd been built up in my system. #10. Read Why We Sleep by Dr. Matthew Walker Listen, if one of the most important factors for your short and long term physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being is the quality of your sleep… …shouldn't you invest a few hours into educating yourself on one of the most well-respected pieces of literature on the subject? If you liked Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind, you'll enjoy Why We Sleep. -DQ

When it comes to cancer, the emphasis in medicine is on detection and not prevention. In medicine's mind, you don't have cancer until they can actually detect it. By that time, cancer has grown enough that it's potentially a lethal problem. If you look at the cancer societies, they raise not millions of dollars, but billions of dollars a year! You name the cancer, and there is a society that's into raising money. Some of the money goes into research, but the majority goes towards detection and not prevention. In Dr. Martin's opinion, medicine needs to change its methods. We're not winning the war on cancer, and need to teach prevention. This is why Dr. Martin continues his quest to educate the masses on proper nutrition. Change your life, change your food, change your mind – this is what Dr. Martin teaches with The Metabolic Reset.

Today I want to continue discussing the heart of a man as we look at this question: What is it that men really want? In Dr. Armand Nicholi's book The Question of God, he says this is what he's observed about the faculty and students at Harvard, "They avoid examining their lives, and they do not seem to want to understand themselves. They are afraid of what they might discover." Is this true of us as men? Are we afraid to confront the truth about ourselves? I am reminded of a quote by George Gilder: "Men lust, but they do not know what for. They wander and lose track of the goal. They fight and compete, but they forget the prize. They spread seed, but spurn the seasons of growth. They chase power and glory but miss the meaning of life." We are all in search of something. What are you looking for?

“I was raised between my grandfather's farm in the Dominican Republic and New York City. In DR, I witnessed how modern technology has made farmers steer away from traditional farming practices— the use of additives, pesticides, herbicides, and other harmful chemicals has increased. Living in New York City I've noticed that the demand for healthy food options and ethical/sustainable business practices has greatly increased. People want companies that care, and I don't think that that is a hard demand to comply with. That is why I decided to create Don Carvajal Café. I want to change the way Coffee, in both its production and distribution, is perceived by strategically working against unethical practices that lead to deforestation, chemical runoff, and child labor— some of the very things coffee production is known for.” Founder, Hector Castillo Carvajal RESOURCES | Website: https://doncarvajalcafe.com/ | NY NOW Podcast Page:https://nynow.com/podcast | NY NOW Email Subscription:https://app.smartsheet.com/b/form/147c19d133dc472cbc83778bcaec0402 | NY NOW Digital Market:https://nynowdigitalmarket.com | NY NOW :https://nynow.com
Inside of Black culture, some groups aren't always included when it comes to identity. As we celebrate both Pride Month and Juneteenth this month, we can combine the two to lift up communities that have been marginalized and celebrate activists that have fought for the freedom of Black people. This week, Dr. Venus shines a spotlight on 7 Black Queer Freedom Fighters and Black Queer advocates, from the literary genius of the 1920s to the brilliant strategy behind the scenes of the March on Washington, these heroes have fought and died for Black freedom, but are seldom cited or celebrated in our society. We were born in a historical time, but we won't be able to make our money, grow, and help others if we sacrifice our freedom and rights for a point of view. Let's talk about it. Key Takeaways: [2:28] Black people have a commitment to freedom, but we can't say we are fully about liberation if we are going to leave out or ignore a group of people. Freedom includes all of us, not just some. [4:25] We have to liberate ourselves from the conditioning of White Supremacy and be the change we want to see in the world vs. pointing the finger at someone else. You can love someone without agreeing with them. What matters the most is that we walk our walk and love each other rather than oppressing or ignoring someone who seems different or whose lifestyle we may not understand. [7:03] We also can't blame ourselves fully for marginalizing our brothers and sisters. It's not a bad thing or something that makes us bad people. It's just White oppression being acted out in Black environments. When we can't allow people to be who they are, we lose in every way from opportunities to money. [9:39] If we can have empathy and grace for players in the Bible, we can have it for the people in our families and the human beings around us. Human beings are imperfect and people do the best they can with what they've got. [10:29] Judging others is not necessarily the problem. It's a problem when you make it a problem for the person you are judging. If you are committed to winning, you have to be emotionally mature enough to know that we need help as we grow and succeed, and that means allowing in people who don't perform and act like you. [11:46] If someone has something that can make your life better and is willing to help, it's a form of self-sabotage to turn it down, especially when it comes to money and social change. You end up handicapping the people that depend on you. Dr. Venus knows that even means accepting the help of White allies who are there to support her along with her own mission of birthing 100 Black Women Billionaires and launching a new tech brand. [14:11] If we are talking about Black Pride, we must be proud not just of our progress, but of our ability to make room for us to be individuals. When you make room for people to be themselves, you provide the ability for true change, growth, and unified power. In Dr. Venus's community, we are not doing hate. Not Black hate, Asian hate, etc. [17:01] We can celebrate both Pride and Juneteenth this month. Juneteenth is Black people's version of Independence Day, when slavery ended for real and when we celebrated because it marked our emancipation. [18:50] Dr. Venus lists 7 Freedom Fighters and LGBTQ Advocates that may not be recognized regularly: Audre Lorde - Died in 1992 and fought for Civil Rights and the Women's Movement. Check out Zami. James Baldwin - Essayist, writer, and activist. At Dr. King's side during the “I Have a Dream” speech. Check out I Am Not Your Negro. Marsha P. Johnson - Pillar of the LGBTQ community in New York City. Trans Woman who fought for queer rights while struggling with mental illness and homelessness. Check out Pose. Bernard Rustin - Leader in Civil Rights, Strategic advisor for Dr. King and helped 1963 March of Washington, Queer rights pioneer. Barbara Smith - Author, Considered Mother of Black Feminism. Andrea Jenkins - First Openly Trans Black Woman elected to political office. [23:08] Identity is not sexuality, yet people conflate the two. Each culture has a language, and Trans and Queer cultures each have their own language code and lexicon. [24:21] If you are committed to making money, you are going to have to get interested in understanding how other people see themselves. Marketing has everything to do with relational dynamics, and you have to know who you are talking to, and how they see themselves. [27:20] Trans rights are human rights, yet Trans Women are murdered by Black Men more than any other group, in much the same way a Black Man would get lynched for being accused of raping a White woman. It's important to know that this is still an aggression and attack on Black Women's bodies. [28:27] Your truth is a truth but not the truth. We have space to have dignified conversations if we truly want to move forward and create a new infrastructure that we can succeed in. [31:48] Dr. Venus shares her love for Black Women. The tears, the pride, the hurt, the love, the perseverance, all of it. Don't take the hate of others on in your energy, and don't feel the need to argue your truth with haters. Be proud of yourself, they have no idea what it takes for you to be well and show up in the world. Quotes: “I have a commitment to inclusion and diversity, and I mean that in every possible way.” “If you are infighting, you can't unite.” “Judging others is not necessarily the problem. It's a problem when you make it a problem for the person you are judging.” “When it comes to money and social change, you require other people who are different from you.” “If we are talking about Black Pride, we must be proud not just of our progress, but of our ability to make room for us to be individuals.” “A lot of times in the Black Community, we stop winning because we don't agree or approve.” Mentioned: Dr. Venus Website | Facebook | Twitter | Instagram “Hot Mess Millionaire” Amazon Pilot ”Hot Mess Millionaire” Complete Series (https://www.youtube.com/c/DrVenusOpalReese) Join the conversation! On this edition of Parallax Views, former Chicago prosecutor and current Law Enforcement Action Partnership (LEAP; formerly Law Enforcement Against Prohibition) Dr. Inge Fryklund has extensive experience in Afghanistan having spent years in the country while working for USAID and the Marine Corps. Dr. Fyklund recently penned an op-ed for the Institute for Policy Studies' Foreign Policy in Focus project entitled "Decentralization Could Reduce Conflict in Postwar Afghanistan". In said op-ed she argues that the kind of local control permitted by Afghanistan's 2004 constitution, if put into practice, could protect women and minorities in Afghanistan if the scenario of a Taliban takeover of Kabul occurs in the aftermath of U.S. withdrawal in September 2021. I initially reached out to Dr. Fyklund to discuss this op-ed, however the focus of our conversation took a much broader tone as we delve into her work on Afghanistan as it relates to the U.S.'s longstanding "War on Drugs" since the Nixon Presidency and its effect on U.S. foreign policy. As those even slightly familiar with the country likely know, Afghanistan is known for it's involvement in poppy production and opium trade. Dr. Fyklund argues that U.S. domestic policy's hardline stance on drug trade has spilled over into U.S. foreign policy as it relates to Afghanistan. This, Dr. Fyklund believes, has been unnecessary and unbeneficial in the long-run. In the course of this conversation Dr. Fyklund and I discuss her thoughts on Biden's planned withdrawal from Afghanistan and why decentralization could prevent the Taliban from taking full control of the country. Moreover, Dr. Fyklund and I take a deep dive into the issue of the War on Drugs and it's relationship to not just foreign policy in Afghanistan but also the problems it has caused domestically and for countries like Mexico, Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador since its inception. In Dr. Fyklund's view the War on Drugs has done more harm than good and has even contributed to a driving a displacement crisis that has led to desperate immigrant refugees arriving at the U.S. border. In addition to these issues Dr. Fyklund and I discuss alternatives to the longstanding War on Drugs and why the War on Drugs could potentially be brought end in the future.
Your liver is actually the key to a healthy metabolism. The path to becoming naturally thin isn't as impossible as it may seem. The hidden truth is that your liver is actually the key to a healthy metabolism. When it isn't functioning properly, it loses the ability to burn fuel. An overloaded liver can only store fuel as fat, which slows your metabolism and leads to excess weight gain.Even if you cut out sugar and carbs, you can still struggle with weight loss and high blood sugar. In Dr. Alan Christianson's book, The Metabolism Reset Diet, he provides readers the information they need to reverse damage to the liver in just four weeks. Once your liver regains its ability to manage your metabolism, you'll have fewer food cravings, steady energy levels, better digestion, and a metabolism that works optimally.Listen in this episode from April 2019 as Dr. Christianson joins Dr. Friedman to explain why liver health is so tied to metabolism, as well as how you can achieve optimal liver function to lose weight and get healthy fast.

In this episode, we invited sociologist, relationship & online dating expert Dr. Jess Carbino to talk about dating apps and online dating. Dr. Jess moved to L.A. for her Ph.D. in sociology and got onto dating apps to make friends and find her special someone. Instantly, she got interested in how people present themselves online, and how they define “attractive.” She talked about the massive data and how she studied them. Tim was curious: other than brand reputation, what’s the most important thing for a dating app to thrive? In Dr. Jess’s opinion, it’s the technology innovation. The industry hasn’t had a meaningful innovation since Tinder. As for the future of online dating, she can see Al and VR playing crucial roles. Advice from Dr. Jess if you are interested in online dating: this is a numbers game; you will experience emotional highs and lows, but it’s important to keep going and give it another try!

Meet Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor is a Harvard-trained and published neuroanatomist. In 1996 she experienced a severe hemorrhage in the left hemisphere of her brain causing her to lose the ability to walk, talk, read, write, or recall any of her life. Her memoir, My Stroke of Insight, documenting her experience with stroke and eight-year recovery, spent 63 weeks on the New York Times nonfiction bestseller list and is still routinely the #1 book about stroke on Amazon. Dr. Taylor is a dynamic teacher and public speaker who loves educating all age groups, academic levels, as well as corporations about the beauty of our human brain and its ability to recover from trauma. In 2008 she gave the first TED talk that ever went viral on the Internet, which now has well over 26 million views. Also, in 2008, Dr. Taylor was chosen as one of Time magazine's "100 Most Influential People in the World" and was the premiere guest on Oprah Winfrey's "Soul Series" webcast. Dr. Jill Botle Taylor's latest book Whole Brain Living: The Anatomy of Choice and the Four Characters That Drive Our Life is on sale now. This conversation, if it doesn't change your life, please let me know! I was enamored throughout the entire interview with what I learned about our brain, how it functions, and ways to better understand why there can be such discord and challenge within our own thinking and emotional systems. Dr. Jill explains your brain's anatomy in a new way and incorporates a brilliant way to dialogue with the four distinct aspects. You're going to want to read on. Grab a paper and pen, so you too can name your four characters. I've shared our names below. Get ready to have your mind glowin', as I like to say (because who the heck really wants their mind blown). Whole Brain Living Did you know that your left and right brain each have their own amygdala and hippocampi? In Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor's book Whole Brain Living, she explains that these are the emotional centers responsible for feelings like anger, frustration, and connection. I had no idea that we have two of each and that each hemisphere has its own little team going on; the thinking tissue and the emotional tissue. You might wonder why this is interesting and how this affects your life; after talking to Dr. Jill, I realized that her research and work is both groundbreaking and crucial to better understanding our own development, way of processing life and emotional thinking, and how to better handle setbacks, anxiety, and tough situations. Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor's approach is one where we honor, acknowledge and tune into all four areas of our two hemispheres. This is what whole brain living is, and when you understand how powerful you are and the four characters are (see below), you will realize how much choice you have in creating a life that is fulfilling and truly connected to your deepest desires. I was blown away by this discussion, and I think you will be too. The Four Characters Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor has discovered what she calls the Four Characters. These are connected to the emotional and thinking tissue in our right and left hemispheres in our brain. I have outlined each of the four and invite you to give each character a name. Mine are listed below. The left thinking tissue in the left hemisphere - this is the rational thinking part that categorizes language, thinks through things quickly, likes to have control and be the boss, and is the typical 'Type A'. It does well with right and wrong, defines structure and details, and critically analyzes data. Both Dr. Jill and I call ours Helen. I chose Helen after my high school Journalism teacher, who was one of my best teachers and was a high Type A kind of person who was all about rational thinking and thinking critically and quickly. The emotional thinking tissue in the left hemisphere-is where we store emotions from the past and are connected to our limbic cells. The 2nd character is connected to what we know as the 'fight or flight' response and is the zone responsible for feelings and emotions like rage, self-loathing, and anger. Dr. Jill talks about having massive respect for this aspect of your brain as it is the part that clings to the sacred past and future. Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor calls this Abby, in connection to the abandoning process when leaving her mother's womb (this will make sense if you listen to the episode), and I call mine Randi, as a metaphor for when I've run or 'ran' away from emotions in the past. The emotional thinking tissue in the right hemisphere - this is our sensory, emotional connection to the present moment. This is a very experiential part of us that wants to stay only in the present and is curious about present experiences like noticing how clothing feels, hearing the birds singing, feeling the sun on your face. This is the adrenaline junkie aspect that wants to experience a tribal, communal, and creative present experience without judgment. For this character, think of joyful and enthusiastic chaos. Dr. Jill calls her 3rd character Pig Pen (love that), and mine is Joy. Would love to know your names! The thinking tissue in the right hemisphere - this is the seat of consciousness and connection to the whole, and deeper relating to the greater Universe. This is where consciousness connects, and we feel into the fact that we're 50 trillion cells as big as the entire Universe. In this area, you can tap into the gratitude and acceptance for being here and honoring that "I am alive". Dr. Jill calls her 4th character Queen Toad (more revealed in the interview), and mine is Queen Lotus. Time for a Brain Huddle A brain huddle is where you get to ask in every moment, what is my next best response for my life to be what I want and for what I want my life to be? Understanding each character, you can literally have a huddle, or chat, with each character to get further insight into how you want to move forward with a decision or way of being. The goal is for all four characters to talk to one another. The power in this model is that you get to choose who you want to be. Slow down, to Go Faster One of my favorite reminders, especially for my Type A folks out there, or our Helens (or whatever you name your character one), is to slow down. Dr. Jill explains that we must slow down to listen and hear what's going on inside and to be able to tap into Character 4, which ultimately is the connector to a greater sense of unity, peace, and deeper connection. One of the best ways to do this is through nature and mindfulness practices. Final Thoughts Getting to know our Four Characters intimately helps us with our emotional thinking, deeper consciousness, and rational thinking. We have to be in touch with all aspects of our brain to live our lives fully and come from a place of balance, happiness, and joy. Pick up a copy of Whole Brain Living today to learn more. In Dr. Karl’s view, Dr. Gaby is singularly the most authoritative person when it comes down to what we know about supplements and their specific applications for various conditions. Dr. Gaby spent almost 40 years studying, accumulating, and applying various supplements. He has become the definitive source for determining what we know about supplements and how to use them to benefit us and improve our health. We are currently a culture overwhelmed by the clever marketing of false information, particularly around supplements. Unfortunately, that information is full of specious claims that offer no solid research. That tends to leave most of us very confused regarding the truth about specific supplements.Dr. Karl feels that he, too, would be lost regarding supplements without Dr. Gaby’s 1,458-page Nutritional Medicine textbook, which removes the fog of false claims and covers 400 different conditions. The book is Dr. Karl’s foundation for finding out what we know, what is safe, and the doses Dr. Gaby recommends after doing his research and valid studies. Dr. Karl has had enough life experience to know that writing the book was a heroic undertaking for Dr. Gaby. Dr. Gaby’s book is a vital resource to help us manage our health and minimize the use of pharmaceutical medication, thereby avoiding any disastrous side effects. Feel free to download some chapters here for free to experience the life-saving value of Dr. Gaby’s book, Nutritional Medicine.Dr. Karl has no financial affiliation to Dr. Gaby’s book or his work. It is just something he believes in and trusts. In this episode, Dr. Karl shares his final thoughts after his interview with Dr. Gaby.Heroic workDr. Karl feels that by writing his book, Dr. Gaby has done some heroic work for humanity. False informationDr. Karl’s issue with practicing medicine today, as a naturopathic physician, is that there is so much clever marketing based on false information.PubMedThere is efficiency in getting information online. Dr. Karl often looks things up on PubMed. However, he cautions people that the information on PubMed is not always 100% true because it merely shares listings of ‘studies’. Bogus studiesMany pharmaceutical and supplement companies now use PubMed, knowing that people will go there because they think of it as a better source of information. It is a good source of information, but unfortunately, some companies use bogus studies to create good abstracts that most people tend to believe. Think for yourselfDr. Karl urges you to think for yourself and learn to differentiate between what is right and wrong. People who have accomplished much in their lives have often said that they stood on the shoulders of the giants who laid the groundwork for their discoveries and accomplishments. Dr. Karl unequivocally states that Dr. Gaby dramatically changed his interest in and his ability to practice nutritional medicine. Dr. Gaby’s life work is his Nutritional Medicine. It represents about 40 years of research and his personal experience of treating patients and teaching medical school students like Dr. Karl. Dr. Karl sees Dr. Gaby's work as his backstop around what we know about using a particular substance (or supplement) for a condition. In this episode, Dr. Karl and Dr. Gaby discuss some things that might be considered controversial. Stay tuned. We hope you enjoy the conversation!COVID Many decisions related to COVID and nutritional medicine get based on what we already know from the research on preventing and treating other infections. That is because there is not much funding behind nutrition research. Hidden food allergiesDr. Gaby recommends working with a health practitioner to uncover any masked allergies. Sometimes allergies are a contributing factor to various chronic problems. Yet, many people are not even aware they exist. In Dr. Gaby’s experience, many people found they got way fewer and less severe infections after avoiding certain foods. SupplementsVitamin C has several effects on immune function, and high doses of Vitamin C, administered intravenously, have brought about some dramatic improvements in people with infections. A Vitamin D metabolite was given to people with COVID in a clinical trial in Spain. It brought about a dramatic improvement. Dr. Gaby does not recommend using very high doses of Vitamin D, however. Zinc is known to prevent COVID from entering cells.Black elderberry syrup has a long history of traditional use for respiratory infections. In a meta-analysis, a marked benefit got seen in the symptoms in people with colds and flu. In a test tube, black elderberry extract inhibited the replication of a chicken coronavirus. The Sunlight ComplexVitamin D differs from all other vitamins. It forms part of what Dr. Gaby calls the Sunlight Complex. When the human skin gets exposed to sunlight, it produces Vitamin D. It also produces a hormone related to immune function, amongst other things. Sunlight also gets taken into the brain via the eyes and stimulates many different hormonal functions. Methyl folate and depressionWe know that the methylated form of folic acid, methyl folate, is effective as a treatment for depression when given at the appropriate dosage and combined with a drug like Prozac. It appears, however, that folic acid is more potent as an adjunct to antidepressants than methyl folate. Although Dr. Gaby uses methyl folate occasionally, he feels concerned about putting it in a multivitamin along with other things.Links:Join Our Facebook Group Keto NaturopathSubscribe to our YouTube ChannelDownload our Free Keto Foods ListVisit our partnersBuy Keto Friendly Dry Farm WinesGet your KetoMoJo Here and test your ketones.Dr. Gaby

Dr. Shad Helmstetter is going to help you overcome the negativity in your life in this episode. He outlines how we are born into this world with unlimited potential. Two babies side by side in a hospital with amazing little bodies and incredible potential ahead of them. Why do some turn out living amazing lives and others do not? The answer may be with the word NO. As children we heard the word tens of thousands of times. That word was getting wired into our brain like a programmer programming a computer, our brains have been programmed. In Dr. Helmstetter's experience he heard how Olympians from East Germany were listening to messages of positive speech to help them with their goals and to overcome any negative thinking. He tried it when he decided he wanted to lose weight. Over a period of 10 weeks of listening to his own recording of self talk for 10 minutes a day while shaving, he lost 38 pounds and has not ever put it back on. Interestingly his wife listened to the same recording and she too lost significant weight. The brain does not care where you came from. It cares about your future. If you say you are terrible with names, you will be terrible with names. However change the self talk that you are great with names and watch how that little step will help.Dr. Helmstetter's books and recordings and Free Trial can be found https://shadhelmstetter.com/https://selftalkplus.com/ Be sure to connect with us in our Lead Sell Grow – The Human Experience Tribe Facebook group:https://www.facebook.com/groups/leadsellgrowDownload the FREE ebook that will help you connect with, and understand your buyers faster! Dr. Jacoby discovers a critical connection. Dr. Jacoby was trained initially in podiatry, so you may wonder how a foot doctor became an expert on sugar-related illnesses? Well, Dr. Jacoby’s specialty in podiatry led him to see patients with diabetic polyneuropathy - which is the number one problem in the United States. Diabetic polyneuropathy is a neurological disorder of all the nerves in the body as a result of diabetes. Diabetic polyneuropathy often affects a person’s feet when they have diabetes. About twenty years ago, Dr. Jacoby attended a lecture and discovered a novel neuropathy treatment using decompressions on the extremities’ nerves. The speaker invited Dr. Jacoby down to Johns Hopkins, where he worked. Dr. Jacoby took him up on the offer, went down there, read his textbooks and articles, and discovered how nerves in the lower extremities are being compressed physically by the chemical reaction of sugar that causes numbness, tingling, and burning sensations. This doctor concluded through intense research that diabetic neuropathy and carpal tunnel syndrome are the same things. Taking what he learned back to Scottsdale, this was only the beginning of the many dots that Dr. Jacoby begins connecting, which led him to some powerful conclusions and treatments. Along the way, Dr. Jacoby has treated thousands of patients, developing a unique holistic approach to understanding how sugar and carbs harm the body and the steps patients take to help regenerate nerves and rehabilitate their normal function dramatically. Time to drop the candy and listen to this fantastic episode! In this podcast, we cover: How a podiatrist like Dr. Jacoby became a leading authority on sugar-related illnesses How the simple formula: trauma + sugar = dysfunction explains the cause of so many diseases Why cholesterol is a “healing molecule” - not a bad guy What are the differences in the diseases related to corn-based sugars vs. wheat-based sugars? The role your microbiome plays in sugar-related disease Some aspects of the medical field that hinder progress and healing Why high fructose corn syrup causes more disease than cane sugar Actions you can take at any age to begin healing from sugar damage How a trip to Taiwan led to more evidence convicting sugar of physical abuse Forty years ago, the Surgeon General of Taiwan invited Dr. Jacoby to visit his country to help figure out why diabetes was popping up in that country for the first time? His name was Dr. Luke Chu - M.D. Ph.D. in pharmacology. While Dr. Jacoby was there, he didn’t find a new patient with diabetes. Because it was still so rare back then, today, it’s prevalent almost everywhere. When Dr. Jacoby asked Dr. Chu what the word for diabetes is in Mandarin, Chu replied, “diabetes.” Dr. Jacoby pointed out that the word has a Greek origin, which means the country and culture had no word to explain the symptoms Dr. Chu was beginning to see in Taiwan. Dr. Jacoby concluded that the nation’s current diet must have something to do with it. A colossal study recently conducted looked at fast-food receipts from 37 countries. Many variables were analyzed - meat, cheese, bread, condiments, and drinks. The study concluded what Dr. Jacoby suspected was happening in Taiwan 40 years ago: the number one variable connected to diabetes is sugary drinks or sodas. The MS, Fibromyalgia, ALS connections to sugar Dr. Jacoby spends a lot of time in this interview talking about the connections he has found between sugar and some of the most widely known diseases today - from multiple sclerosis to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis...do you see the common word there? “Sclerosis.” In medicine, the word sclerosis means an “abnormal hardening of body tissue.” In Dr. Jacoby’s opinion, based on decades of research, sugar affects our body tissues. If you don’t know - these diseases have the same symptoms of numbness, tingling, burning, and motor control loss. Carpal tunnel is the same. Sugar damages nerves like the glossopharyngeal nerve that is a part of your swallowing reflex. Dr. Jacoby also explains how sugar plays a significant role in arteriosclerosis (there’s that word “sclerosis” again), a.k.a. hardening of the arteries. Breaking out of the “specialization silo” of podiatry has enabled Dr. Jacoby to make some exciting connections that a specialist would never find because they typically look only at the same things and talk to the same people throughout their medical career. Don’t be another statistic for diabetes and the horrible health results that often occur to those who abuse sugar or cannot process sucrose due to no fault of their own. Check out Dr. Jacoby for answers. You already know that too much sugar is not suitable for you. Whatever you may call it: “doughnut cocaine,” “pixy stix,” or “carney crack,” the sweet white sand commonly called sugar is a wrecking ball on your body. Tune in to this episode. Dr. Jacoby can help you overcome the health issues sugar brings to those who love it too much. In Dr. Escalante own words: We live in culture of anxiety, and I'm passionate about finding ways to succeed joyfully despite all the stress. That's the theme of my work: effective action under pressure. As a pediatrician, I believe our culture of criticism is a #ShouldStorm that fuels anxiety and limits us as leaders and as parents. I developed the innovative Sigh, See & Start Method and shared it in my TEDx Talk. Leaders use the 3S's to engage their strength and make the shoulds irrelevant. Parents use my method to raise their kids skillfully AND enjoy doing it.It's so much fun for me to share engaging insights from science, psychology, and culture with people. Communicating clearly to generate Aha! moments for people is one of my greatest joys.-I write widely about how we can succeed without crushing ourselves, most often at Forbes, Psychology Today and Medium.-I speak at conferences to physicians and other professionals about thriving by harnessing our internal strengths (it's neuroscience and it works).-I speak to parents about raising happy kids in our anxiety epidemic.-I practice pediatrics in Naperville, IL.Learn more at:www.ShouldStorm.com (1) Alison Escalante, MD FAAP | LinkedInIf you want to learn more you can also Join the Face Book Group: Should-Free Parenting

Integrative Veterinarian Dr. Katie Kangas DVM, CVA, CVCP joins us today on It's A Dogs Life With Angela Ardolino, only on Cannabis Radio. Dr. Kangas is an integrative veterinarian, which means that she focuses on preventative health and supporting natural healing or wellness through many holistic options in combination with traditional veterinary medicine. Preventative wellness and holistic care options include diet/food choices, nutritional supplements, acupuncture, herbal medicines, homeopathic remedies, essential oils, and more. Conventional medicine (for both animals & people) tends to focus more on the treatment of disease and the symptoms of the disease after the condition or illness presents itself. While this type of health care can have value, it also has limitations. Preventative and integrative veterinary medicine aims to support the animal’s health through diet, nutrition, and lifestyle practices that allow our pets to be more resilient to disease and live better quality lives. In other words, providing our pets with the tools to thrive, rather than to just survive. In Dr. Kangas's opinion, the most balanced health care uses a combination of both conventional and holistic options. This is called Integrative Medicine. It is her goal to empower pet parents to make better choices and take a more active role in promoting health and quality of life for their pets. We talk today about Dr. Katie Kangas, her journey, where she thinks this industry is heading and much more on It's A Dogs Life with Angela Ardolino.
Pete Simi, PhD, joins host Lorenzo Norris, MD, to discuss some of the factors that lead people to join hate groups, and strategies that have enabled some to leave the life of extremism behind. Dr. Simi, associate professor of sociology at Chapman University in Orange, Calif., has studied extremist groups and violence for more than 20 years. His research has received external funding from the National Institute of Justice, the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Defense, the National Science Foundation, and the Harry F. Guggenheim Foundation. Dr. Norris is associate dean of student affairs and administration at George Washington University, Washington. Dr. Norris has no disclosures. Take-home points Dr. Simi discusses how many of the White supremacists he studied live mundane, ordinary lives organized around extremist, violent beliefs. These individuals may be socialized in early life through exposure to beliefs consistent with White supremacy, such as racist ideas, slurs, and jokes, but they are not usually raised within a White supremacist family. The biggest challenge of leaving White supremacy is finding a new overarching identity, which ultimately requires redefining one’s emotional habits when it comes to engaging with society. White supremacist programming not only includes hateful beliefs but an emotional orientation that influences how an individual interprets the world around them. White supremacist violence and terrorism have long been a U.S. problem, and Dr. Simi said his awareness of the problem grew after the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995. Dr. Simi hopes that, through research and initiatives, the United States will address the root causes of White supremacist beliefs rather than focus on specific groups. Summary Dr. Simi first started studying White supremacists by evaluating their engagement on early Internet forums. Eventually, he made contact with a group that allowed him to observe their daily lives, including staying in their homes and attending collective events, such as music festivals. More recently, he has been evaluating and researching individuals who leave the White supremacist movement. As with many individuals who find solace in extremist groups, the childhood and adolescence of those who become White supremacists usually contain adverse childhood experiences and instability, such as physical and emotional abuse, and substance use in the home. These events cultivate vulnerability to White supremacy, because these adolescents and young adults are searching for a stabilizing force. In the Internet age, it’s much easier for vulnerable individuals to have chance encounters with extremist groups and beliefs, and even brief exposures are an opportunity for some to be recruited into White supremacist groups. A selling point of White supremacy is the sense of “fellowship” and “family,” which is attractive for individuals who feel disillusioned and isolated from society at large. In Dr. Simi’s research, half of his sample participants of White supremacists reported mental health diagnoses and similarly high rates of suicidal ideation. Mental illness is not an excuse for the behaviors and beliefs, but an example of another vulnerability that makes these individuals susceptible to strong support groups that often hold extremist beliefs.
