New parameters approved Feb. 2 by the Floresville Independent School District (ISD) board of trustees mean that a strictly four-day school calendar is off the table for 2026-27. These parameters guide the calendar development by the administration and the calendar committee to create sample calendars which include 165 student days, 470 minutes per day, and to end the school year by May 27, 2027. The Floresville Independent School District is seeking input from district families to help guide the development of the 2026-27 school calendar. During the 2025-26 school year, the district moved to a hybrid calendar, alternating between five- and four-day weeks each quarter. In the intervening interval, I had a real estate career, medical interventions, and became a member of John Q. Public. Editor: A false narrative has been circulating stating that to get great teachers, FISD needs to go to a four-day work week. This flies in the face of common sense. A great teacher is a teacher dedicated to teaching their students appropriate subject matter to the best of their ability while, at the same time, exhibiting positive appropriate adult behavior and being great role models. A teacher dedicated to provide all students with a three-day weekend is not a great teacher, in my opinion. This innovative approach is crucial to addressing the ongoing teacher shortage and improving educational outcomes and attendance for our students.
