Editor: I am writing in support of the Floresville Independent School District's (FISD) consideration of a four-day school week. This innovative approach is crucial to addressing the ongoing teacher shortage and improving educational outcomes and attendance for our students. No matter how many days students attend school, the quality of their education depends on the availability and caliber of their teachers. Unfortunately, the percentage of certified, traditionally trained teachers in our schools has dropped significantly. According to the Texas Education Agency's 2024 annual report, state-wide 56 percent of first-time teachers hired during the 2023-24 school year were uncertified, compared to...Article Link

Editor: RE: “Community members speak out against Floresville ISD's proposed four-day week,” Dec. 10, 2024. As a Floresville High School (FISD) alumnus, and someone whose siblings are still in the district, I strongly encourage the FISD Board of Trustees to consider other options to increase student attendance and employee/teacher retention rate. I also encourage fellow community members to submit their thoughts to the board. The trustees' contact information is available online at fisd.us/page/fisd-board-members. This change, if implemented, would thoroughly impact students' school and family lives. My concerns are: •Childcare and food for those in need. Floresville Independent School District (ISD) is struggling to recruit and retain high quality teachers. To combat this, the district is considering a four-day school week for the upcoming 2025-26 school year. During the Nov. 11 school board meeting, Assistant Superintendent Rhonda Wade presented statistics and survey results, explaining that around 80 percent of current Floresville teachers would like to see a four-day schedule for the district. With the proposal, the district hopes to both increase teacher morale and attract certified applicants to join the district. “One of the best things for student learning is a highly qualified teacher,” Superintendent Jason...Article Link
Editor: Are parents of students attending Floresville Independent School District (ISD) aware that the school board is considering reducing the number of days your children attend school each week from 5 days per week to 4 days per week? This initiative was recently discussed at the Floresville ISD school board meeting held on Monday, Nov. 11. No formal action has been taken by the district, as of yet, but decisions regarding whether or not this will go into effect for the 2025-26 school year will be made in the coming months.
