When Fred Perrotta first started playing around with content for his brand, Tortuga Backpacks, he had no idea what would resonate. Eventually, something stuck. But it was a topic he never would have expected. Here's how content helped Tortuga break their first million in sales. And what you can learn from their experience over the last decade.
Today we have Fred Perrotta, Co-founder and CEO of Tortuga Backpacks! In this episode, we talked about the challenges of developing a physical product when you’re a 100% distributed team, building an epic place to work, and applying the principle of “players and coaches” in your company. We also talked about Fred’s million-dollar mistake, how to figure out if someone can be a good remote worker, and why you should always do project post-mortems. If you’re enjoying the podcast, please consider leaving a review on iTunes!
Fred Perrotta of Tortuga Backpacks takes a contrarian view when it comes to scaling a successful brand. But his approach has allowed him and his team scale Tortuga Backpacks into a multiple-seven-figure business through bootstrapping alone. They haven't raised any outside venture capital, and they've managed to build a fully remote team from day one. Designing and manufacturing products require capital. This is the biggest constraint for bootstrapped businesses. You have to figure out how you can afford to scale as the demand for your products increase. We talk to Fred about how he co-founded the business, how they've scaled it, and how they've overcome capital constraints resulting from not raising any outside funding. We also explore the tactics Tortuga Backpacks has used for managing inventory issues, covering employee salaries, and marketing their brand. If you're looking to take a bootstrapping approach to growing your business, you'll learn how Fred and his team have been able to scale Tortuga Backpacks into a multimillion-dollar brand. “You have to focus on what's actually working for you, what's possible, and what you can afford. That's a muscle you have to develop.” - Fred Perrotta, Tortuga Backpacks (15:06-15:15) Some topics that were discussed include: The “levers” that Tortuga Backpacks used to hit their first seven figures in revenue How to learn from the feedback you get from customers so you know what will work How profitable (and for how long) you have to be to get conventional funding Accidental scarcity can create a bigger demand for your products. Getting your audience to buy up your inventory can be as easy as just sending out an email. How much revenue does it take to fund your inventory and production runs while keeping your products in stock at all times? Where you need to allocate your profits when growing a bootstrapped business What percentage of your marketing needs to go to performance marketing Magazines have become online publishers that rely heavily on affiliate revenue. How do you manage a physical product while remote? That's what we get into here on this week’s episode of More Beach Meetings. Our guest this week is Fred Perrotta, co-founder and CEO of Tortuga, a remote company specializing in travel products like their award-winning Setout Backpack.
In this episode, we interviewed Fred Perrotta. He is the Co-Founder & Remote CEO of Tortuga Backpacks. The company that creates amazing carry-on-size backpacks, specially designed for long-term urban trips. Tortuga Backpacks is a fully remote team, with nine employees working from home. Most of them are based in the US, one in Canada, and one in China. In this episode we talked to Fred about, their decision to go 100% remote, establishing trust, autonomy, the benefits of working remotely, challenges of an e-commerce remote business, communication, lack of standardization, Instilling culture, and their preferred tools. For Fred, trust plays a big part when hiring new people. He believes that trust is built by doing the actual work. Fred doesn’t see the employees sitting for 10 hours working on something, he only sees the results. There are three “remote” challenges that Fred is always working on: physical product development, flow of information, lack of standardization.
Today's topic is one that's near and dear to my heart: remote work. I’m a little bit of a vagabond, and I love not being tied down, so the idea of being able to build a remote team is something that I think is really important. It gets a little tricky when you get into physical products, but today I have Fred Perrotta from Tortuga.com to share how the company he co-founded handles this challenge. Fred shares the potential issues that can arise from working with an entirely remote team, as well as how Tortuga overcomes them to maintain a physical products business with a team of people located all around the world. On a 2-week trip to Germany with his best friend, Fred Perotta had an ah-ha moment. After heaps of research and no help from retailers, Fred couldn’t find the right bag for travelers. He couldn’t understand why most travelers use outdoor ‘hiking’ backpacks, rather than one made specifically for ‘traveling.’ That is, until he realized the solution he wanted — a front-loading backpack, rather than top-loading, that fits into an overhead compartment — didn’t exist. So, he decided to solve his own problem. Today, he’s a world traveler, entrepreneur, startup marketer and co-founder of one of Entrepreneur magazine’s 100 Brilliant Companies List in 2012, Tortuga Backpacks.
