In this episode of the Bikepack Adventures podcast, I share a conversation I had with Gene Villeneuve, an Ottawa based cyclist that I've slowly got to know over the past few years since moving back to Canada. Surprisingly, due to our busy lives, this is the first time Gene and I have had the opportunity to really sit back and talk one-on-one. As a life-long cyclist Gene shares his views on environmentalism, the cycling community, and of course, his own personal journey from a more traditional road cyclist and mountain biker to delving into the world of gravel biking, bikepacking and cyclocross. Although this conversation is a little different than most of my podcasts, I hope you enjoy the simplicity of the conversation and the sharing of a journey. Gene Villeneuve is a software executive with over 25 years of experience running small to large teams at Tehama, Cognos, OLAP@Work, and IBM. Coaching, mentoring, endurance sports, and business are his passions. Gene is semi-retired and now offers advising or mentoring engagements with individuals or team. His passion for cycling has kept him levelheaded throughout his career and now offers more fulfillment now that he has more time to do the things he loves. Tune in to today's episode to learn about the risks that paid off and the discipline that has led Gene Villeneuve to be successful and now semi-retired and living his life to the fullest. Quotes: “That's how I got into cycling, that's always been a core aspect of my personality. Not only is it a way to de stress after a long day, but it just becomes something else, in addition to family and in addition to work, and it is something else, that's your own.” (2:16-2:43) “I think when it comes to the professional sort of things, it's always, the curiosity, the willingness to take risks and the third one is always be driven to help others be successful as well.” (6:40-6:57) “Where I became unique and different is, is that I became an enabler for those sellers. I would have people telling me you're actually on the phone or in people's offices trying to get those issues resolved within IBM, and other sales leaders didn't actually do that for us.” (14:38-15:18) Links: Gene Villeneuve LinkedIn Gene Villeneuve Website Empellor CRM LinkedIn Empellor CRM Website Empellor CRM Twitter
Cybercrime is a very real threat to wealthy individuals and their businesses. Not only is your personal data at risk but also the data of your employees and your organization’s customers. Cyberattacks and ransomware attacks are increasing and exploiting weaknesses such as the Internet of Things (IoT), cybercrime awareness, and insufficient training. Today, I share the true cost of ignoring cybersecurity to the self-made nation, which could result in going out of business. I highlight how large numbers of companies still don’t have a dedicated cyber resource and the high value of fines introduced in recent privacy regulations. I also discuss the cost to the economy from cybercrime and how small to medium-sized enterprises are risking their existence by ignoring the rising number of cyber threats. “Anyone and everyone is a target.” - Colleen O’Connell-Campbell Today on I’m A Millionaire...So, Now What: Why 30% of Canadian businesses don't have a dedicated cyber resource. The fines and changes to privacy regulations. How ransomware was a 10-billion dollar industry in 2018. The cost of cybercrime to the US economy. How small to medium-sized businesses are at risk of going out of business due to cybercrimes. Key takeaways from the cybersecurity series: It is not a question of if, it is a question of when. Put safeguards in place and create unique passwords. Tap into two-factor authentication. Look to professional services where necessary. Continuously educate yourself, your team, and your suppliers. The world is changing quickly, and the scaling and adoption of technology means that it plays an even more significant role in our lives. With more interactions taking place online and people's data being shared or stored in many ways, the risk of cybercrime continues to grow. From every interaction, be that buying an online product or service or reading emails, a threat of cybercrime exists. Today I share how cybersecurity affects you. I highlight how technology plays a part in almost everyone's lives on a moment-by-moment basis and reveal how the risk of cybercrime is growing, from privacy breaches to fraud or intellectual property theft. I share how people and organizations are prone to phishing, having their email hacked, having fraudulent charges applied to credit cards, or being attacked by ransomware. I also share how businesses that were once ‘brick and mortar’ now exist as a virtual presence, increasing the chances of their - or their customer's - data being compromised. “Technology and its constant evolution impact our lives on a daily basis.” - Colleen O'Connell Campbell Today on I’m A Millionaire...So, Now What: How technology touches all parts of our lives. The increasing risks of cybercrime. The different types of cybercrime. How businesses are moving from a physical presence to a virtual presence and how it impacts their cybersecurity. How every business and every individual is continuously connected. Mental health is a serious issue and the self-made nation is not immune. Entrepreneurs are 50% more likely to have a mental health condition, while founders are two times more likely to suffer from depression and six times more likely to suffer from ADHD. Founders are also three times more likely to suffer from substance abuse, ten times more likely to suffer from bipolar disorder and twice as likely to be hospitalized for a psychiatric episode or have suicidal thoughts. Today, I discuss the irony of mental health and happiness. I share the vital things you need to know about the signs and symptoms of mental illnesses for founders and entrepreneurs. I reveal the little things to watch for that might indicate that you are exhausted, tired, or burning out. I also stress the importance of taking time to rest, reset, and refresh. “Loneliness, being tired, and burnout doesn't have to lead to a deep depression.” - Colleen O’Connell-Campbell Today on I’m A Millionaire...So, Now What: Facts and statistics on mental illnesses for entrepreneurs and founders. The irony of happiness and mental health conversations. The signs of exhaustion and burning out. The importance of resting and resetting as an entrepreneur. Many people focus on growing revenue. This is called the top line, however, it is the bottom line that matters. If profit is stagnant or in the negative, then it will certainly become a problem. Perhaps your expenses are growing faster than your revenue. or the business liabilities are increasing at a faster pace than the assets. It can be hard to find more happiness when more money isn’t in the pipeline. Today, I share how more money equals more happiness. I reveal how income and revenue are vanities and how profit and net worth lead to sanity. I share how financial riches bring freedom and highlight why consumerism is the real problem. I share how purposeful spending is a vital element of finding more happiness through more money. I also reveal why you still need to do your inner work when you are searching for greater happiness. “If you subscribe to ‘keeping up with the Jones’s, that will strip away your financial freedom.” - Colleen O’Connell-Campbell Today on I’m A Millionaire...So, Now What: Why income is vanity, and net worth is sanity. How financial riches bring true freedom. The connection between the desire to appear wealthy or affluent and consumerism. Why purposeful spending is vital. Why consumerism is the problem regarding your happiness. Why inner work is an essential element of happiness. The Roadmap to Real Riches and Real Happiness: Spend consciously. Eliminate all consumer debt. Employ priority spending. Have an education fund. Have an experiential fund. Build up a freedom fund. Create a philanthropic portfolio. Eliminate all debts. Sometimes, life throws us a curveball. We might be cruising along, meeting all our goals, right on track for the future. Our family is thriving. Life is good, then suddenly we are launched into chaos. That is what happened to our guest today, Gene Villeneuve. Gene is a Canadian who moved with his wife and kids to work in Paris, France. They were living the dream until two years ago when his wife was diagnosed with breast cancer. Gene was on The Dad Edge previously to talk about how to love a spouse with cancer. He did the best he could to be a good husband and dad as his wife went through grueling treatments and surgeries. But just when his wife was recovering from her last surgery, Gene found out that his status with his job in France had changed and he would have 6 weeks to move his family back to Canada. Gene tells us about how coped with this huge upheaval in his life and four of his personal strategies to keep calm through the chaos.
