Annemieke Bosman in gesprek met componiste Calliope Tsoupaki. Calliope Tsoupaki (1963) is een Nederlands-Griekse componiste. Ze werd geboren in Piraeus, Griekenland, en woont en werkt al meer dan twee decennia hoofdzakelijk in Amsterdam. Tsoupaki studeerde piano en muziektheorie aan het Conservatorium in Athene en compositie bij Yannis Ioanithis. Ze heeft zomercursussen gevolgd bij Iannis Xenakis, Olivier Messiaen en Pierre Boulez. Van 1988 tot 1992 studeerde ze compositie bij Louis Andriessen en elektronische muziek bij Gilius van Bergeijk aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium in Den Haag. Tsoupaki heeft voor diverse musici en ensembles gecomponeerd, zoals het Nederlands Saxofoonkwartet, Orkest De Volharding, het Xenakis Ensemble, het Nieuw Ensemble, het Greek Metropolitan Choir en Asko|Schönberg. Haar werken zijn in opdracht geschreven van onder meer de Griekse omroep, de NTR ZaterdagMatinee, het Holland Festival en het Fonds voor de Scheppende Toonkunst. Haar kameropera 'Vita Nova' ging in 2004 in première in het Korzo Theater in Den Haag en haar 'Lucas Passie' tijdens het Holland Festival van 2008. In 2010 bracht het Holland Festival opnieuw een première van Tsoupaki: 'Greek Love Songs'. In 2012 componeerde ze op verzoek van het Nederlands Blazers Ensemble 'Maria', waarin klassieke en volksmuziektradities van de Mariaverering samenkomen. Calliope Tsoupaki doceert compositie aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium in Den Haag.  In opdracht van AVROTROS heeft Calliope Tsoupaki een nieuw werk geschreven voor het Radio Filharmonisch Orkest en het Groot Omroepkoor onder leiding van Karina Canellakis. De wereldpremière vindt plaats in TivoliVredenburg Utrecht op 15 september 2023 tijdens het openingsconcert van het AVROTROS Vrijdagconcert seizoen 2023-2024. Het thema van dit seizoen, ‘Wanderlust' is voor Calliope Tsoupaki aanleiding voor een nieuwe compositie die ze voor dit concert zal schrijven: ‘Het verlangen om te reizen, om te vertrekken naar een verre onbekende plek, is de basis van het verlangen om muziek te maken.' De reis die de vluchtelingen maken, staat centraal in Aurora. “Dromen van een nieuw leven, en daarvoor sterven. De ondertitel ‘Maybe we would have made it to heaven...' is een uitspraak van een overlevende van een dodelijke reis die ik las in een artikel over het redden van vluchtelingen in de Middellandse zee. Aurora heeft geen verhaal. Het koor zingt de namen van de boten die vluchtelingen vervoeren en van sterren en constellaties als een allegorie voor het donker en de nachtelijke hemel. De boten hebben prachtige namen, maar er schuilt veel leed achter.”  De titel van het werk is Aurora en het duurt ca. 17 minuten.

In haar werkkamer spreekt componist Huba de Graaff openhartig over de dingen die haar bezighouden en over dingen waarvan ze afscheid moest nemen. Ze zingt een klein stukje van haar nieuwste werk tussen roterende luidsprekers in een verlaten ruimte. Componist Huba de Graaff werd in 1959 geboren in Amsterdam. Ze woont nog steeds in deze stad die haar zo dierbaar is, niet ver van de Dappermarkt. Inmiddels werkt ze al 30 jaar als zelfstandig ondernemer en ontwikkelde ze door de jaren heen zelfgemaakte instrumenten, zoals een metalen jurk, maar ook haar eigen software waarmee ze allerlei soorten elektronica kon besturen. Ze neemt een bijzondere plaats in in het landschap van de hedendaagse muziek. Ze produceerde de afgelopen 25 jaar een reeks unieke muziek-theaterwerken waaronder ‘Lautsprecher Arnolt', ‘Apera' en haar ‘Pornopera'. Ze studeerde viool, sonologie en compositie bij o.a. Gilius van Bergeyk, Louis Andriessen, Dick Raaijmakers en Fredric Rzewski. Tijdens haar studie speelde ze in de bands The Tapes en Transistor met toetsenist Rober-Jan Stips.
