Welcome to episode 198 ("We Loved Thee, Google Expeditions''") of the EdTech Situation Room from November 18, 2020, where technology news meets educational analysis. This week Jason Neiffer (@techsavvyteach) and Wesley Fryer (@wfryer) discussed FCC changes to United States bandwidth spectrum affecting WiFi and automotive emergency communication, faster Google Chromebook chips and Google Product Black Friday specials, and the benefits of YouTube Premium. The depressing demise of both Google Expeditions and Google Tour Creator in Summer 2021, Google Pay's impressive upgrade, GitHub's decision to support fair use, and favorable reviews of Apple's new M1 chip powered laptops which are convincing Jason to return to the Apple user fold were also highlighted. An alarming revelation about the poorly perceived reach of Facebook's economic surveillance methods was also discussed. Geeks of the Week included Wes' preview video for the December #digiURI Media Club meeting (discussing the March 2020 TED Radio Hour, "IRL Online" and the case for remote learning at home with TWO monitors. Our show was live streamed and archived simultaneously on YouTube Live as well as our Facebook Live page via StreamYard.com, and compressed to a smaller video version (about 100MB) on AmazonS3 using Handbrake software. Please follow us on Twitter @edtechSR for updates, and join us LIVE on Wednesday nights (normally) if you can at 10 pm Eastern / 9 pm Central / 8 pm Mountain / 7 pm Pacific or 3 am UTC. In a previous episode Krista and Sandrine analyzed steps to design your overall language program. In this episode they discuss the next step, designing a specific unit. To obtain their objectives, they demonstrate Backward Design (Wiggins and McTighe). Special shout-out to Bill VanPatten and Joe Dale, and special mentions of The Answer Pad, Whiteboard.fi and Google Tour Creator. Episode 9 of the #mfltwitterati podcast focuses on the power of international collaboration for promoting language learning and widening students' horizons. You'll hear a range of inspirational voices from the language teaching community at both primary and secondary levels showcasing many amazing examples of how global connections can make language learning more real and purposeful. Mentions of British Council programmes such as eTwinning, Connecting Classrooms and Erasmus Plus feature heavily throughout the episode and we sincerely thank all those kind teachers who have shared their reflections so generously. If you've ever been curious about how to find a partner school and set up some international collaboration opportunities for your students, this episode should provide you with plenty of food for thought on how to get started! Our TechTalk interview for this episode is a case in point and features Florentina Popescu and Marina Pozo who share many ways they have incorporated global connections into their classrooms. Through Skype calls, penpal letters, an adventurous teddy, a web tv show and a face to face visit, they have achieved real impact on their children's attitudes to the value of language learning and being connected with international peers.
