Is there anything we can do to stop these fires from getting so out of control?” Retired QLD fire commander, Graeme Thom told Dean Miller on 4BC Summer Breakfast, "What's happening over there is devastating and it shouldn't be happening, the firefighters are doing an amazing job but they can't cope with something like that, so you have got to cope with it a different way."See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Here it is: Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast - Episode #940. I've had his brother (Don Tapscott) and nephew (Alex Tapscott) on the show countless times. We might as well extend the invitation to Bob Tapscott. Bob has a knack for diving into the deep end of tech and coming up with pearls of wisdom. With a background as a CIO, speaker, and consultant, Bob's journey spans nuclear power maintenance, Wall Street derivatives, and flying commercial aircrafts by computer. He's the go-to guy for developing and implementing disruptive strategies that actually work, focusing on corporate performance and customer satisfaction (meaning: He's the person that is building the tech we all talk about). Bob delves into what he calls the second era of computing - where computers don't just follow orders, they learn, ask questions and show us what we need. It's a “game-changer” (and I hate that word!), driven by the convergence of artificial intelligence (AI), blockchain, and the Internet of Things (IoT). Bob breaks it down: We're seeing an growth in computing power that's reshaping our world. AI isn't just about making things faster - it's about making things smarter. The company with the most data will have the smartest systems, and that's a big deal. But with great power comes great responsibility (thanks, Uncle Ben!). We talk about the potential for job displacement and the societal challenges that come with these advancements. It's not just about the tech... it's about the frameworks we need to guide its implementation responsibly. Our conversation touches on the exciting and somewhat daunting possibilities of AI, like the development of generative AI tools and the role of startups in this evolving landscape. Bob is particularly keen on the ethical implications - how do we ensure these technologies benefit society as a whole? And let's not forget the international angle. Tech doesn't respect borders, so collaboration is key. Bob's new book, Trivergence - How Ai, Blockchain, And The Internet Of Things Are Ushering In A New Digital Age, is all about navigating this brave new world. He explores the synergies between AI, blockchain, and IoT, showing how these technologies can work together to transform business and society. It's not a tech manual... it's a guide for making smart decisions in a world full of uncertainties. Bob talks about the power of Infinite Data - where AI, powered by vast datasets, can generate insights and value without human intervention. It's fascinating and a must-read for anyone looking to stay ahead of the curve. Bob unpacks these concepts with a mix of technical insight and practical wisdom. Whether you're a tech enthusiast or a business leader, there's something here for you. Enjoy the conversation... Running time: 1:04:20. Hello from beautiful Montreal. Check out ThinkersOne. or you can connect on LinkedIn. ...or on Twitter. Here is my conversation with Bob Tapscott. Trivergence - How Ai, Blockchain, And The Internet Of Things Are Ushering In A New Digital Age. Follow Bob on LinkedIn. Follow Bob on X. This week's music: David Usher 'St. Lawrence River'. Takeaways The second era of computing is characterized by computers being able to ask and learn, rather than just being programmed. The exponential growth in computing power, driven by blockchain and AI, is transforming society. Data is crucial for AI development, and the company with the most data will likely have the most intelligent system. The implementation of AI and other technologies could lead to job displacement and societal challenges. Thoughtful frameworks and discussions are needed to guide the responsible and beneficial use of these technologies. The development of AI tools like chat GPT is impressive and has the potential to outperform human capabilities in certain tasks. The growth of data is exponential, and it presents both opportunities and challenges in the field of AI. The consolidation of AI power among big tech companies is likely, but startups can still find success by focusing on specific domains. The ethical implications of AI, including autonomous killing machines, raise concerns and the need for careful regulation and oversight. The impact of AI is not limited by geographic borders, and international collaboration is crucial for addressing its challenges and maximizing its benefits. Chapters: 00:00 - Introduction and Background. 09:49 - Exponential Growth in Computing Power. 25:38 - Guiding the Responsible Use of Technology. 35:20 - Exploring the Potential of AI: Open AI and Generative AI Tools. 45:47 - The Exponential Growth of Data and its Implications for AI. 53:12 - Startups in the AI Landscape: Focusing on Specific Domains. 01:00:06 - The Role of Geography and the Need for International Collaboration in AI.

We've spoken before on this podcast about cyber security and protecting yourself from cyber crime - but what is being done to tackle the phenomenon internationally? That's what we're looking at in this episode. We've bought together some of the most senior global figures on cyber crime to find out how international collaboration and public/private partnership is taking the fight to the criminals. It's a big task. It is predicted that cybercrime will cost the global economy over 9.2 trillion dollars in 2024. The number of firms targeted by ransomware attacks has increased by almost 20% in the last five years, with 72% of organisations being hit in 2023. Deepak Verma is Head of Product for HPE Data Protection. He says it's not just the big financial players who are being targeted; in fact education and healthcare are the main victims of cyber attacks. Because cyber criminals don't have to contend with geographical borders, attacks can be instigated from anywhere, to target anywhere. Which is why, as Joanna Bouckaert, from the Centre for Cybersecurity of the World Economic Forum says, bringing governments and organisations together from across the world is imperative to protecting ourselves from the growing complexity of cyber attacks; as is increasing awareness within the private sector. But there's more to reducing the number of cyber attacks than prevention alone. Craig Jones is a law enforcement official working for Interpol as Director of Cybercrime. He says building a network of co-operation with different countries has been a key part of bringing down gangs of cyber criminals across the world.Sources and statistics cited in this episode:Cybercrime global cost - https://www.statista.com/forecasts/1280009/cost-cybercrime-worldwide20th anniversary of the Budapest Convention - https://www.coe.int/en/web/cybercrime/20th-anniversary-budapest-conventionBank thwarting billions of pounds worth of cyber attacks - https://www.ft.com/content/cd287352-cb3b-48d8-a85b-668713b80962Schools hit by cyber attacks - https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/cyber-security-breaches-survey-2022/educational-institutions-findings-annex-cyber-security-breaches-survey-2022Stuxnet malware - https://www.cfr.org/cyber-operations/stuxnetNIS2 Directive - https://www.nis-2-directive.com/#:~:text=What%20is%20the%20NIS%202,cybersecurity%20across%20the%20European%20Union.Cyber security spending prediction - https://www.statista.com/outlook/tmo/cybersecurity/worldwide#:~:text=Revenue%20in%20the%20Cybersecurity%20market,US%2492.91bn%20in%202024.HPE logs 2.6 billion events every day - https://www.hpe.com/us/en/newsroom/blog-post/2023/04/hpe-showcases-data-security-initiatives-via-the-2023-cybersecurity-report.html

The Hoover Institution held a conversation on What is the Role of Future International Collaboration: Risks and Opportunities on January 22, 2024 from 11:00 AM - 12:30 PM PT. Dr. Thomas Mason addressed aspects of research openness and the daily need to protect the information that is critically important to universities, National Labs, the federal government, and the private sector. The conversation was followed by a 30 minute Q&A.  As a national security science laboratory Los Alamos National Lab has worked to strike the right balance between openness of research and protection of information for over eighty years. The talk addressed the historic importance of open international collaboration in fostering rapid innovation with economic and national security benefits while still recognizing the need to manage the risks that come with international engagement. SPEAKER Thomas Mason is the President and CEO of Triad National Security, LLC (Triad) and serves as the Director of Los Alamos National Laboratory. Most recently he was the Senior Vice President for Global Laboratory Operations at Battelle where he had responsibility for governance and strategy across the six National Laboratories that Battelle manages or co-manages. Prior to joining Battelle, Thom worked at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) for 19 years, including 10 years as the Laboratory Director. Under his leadership, ORNL saw significant growth in programs, new facilities, and hiring while achieving record low safety incident rates. Before becoming Laboratory Director, he was Associate Laboratory Director (ALD) for Neutron Sciences, ALD for the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), and Director of the Experimental Facilities Division. During his time in Oak Ridge, Thom was active in the community serving as Chair of the Oak Ridge Public Schools Education Foundation as well as Innovation Valley, the Knoxville-Oak Ridge area regional economic development organization. He moved to ORNL from the University of Toronto where he was a faculty member in the Department of Physics and previously worked as a Senior Scientist at Risø National Laboratory and a Postdoc at AT&T Bell Laboratories. For the past 30 years, he has been involved in the design and construction of scientific instrumentation and facilities and the application of nuclear, computing, and materials sciences to solve important challenges in energy and national security. Thom has a Ph.D. in Experimental Condensed Matter Physics from McMaster University and a BSc in Physics from Dalhousie University. INTRODUCTORY REMARKS BY Norbert Holtkamp is a Science Fellow at the Hoover Institution. Holtkamp is also a professor of particle physics and astrophysics and of photon science at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory at Stanford University BACKGROUND International collaborations and research openness have been enormously beneficial to the United States supporting rapid advances of world leading Science & Technology in our country. They brought a large group of incredibly talented people from around the world to come work with US science and technology industry. In the end, many of them stayed which provided a pipeline for innovation and business growth helping to maintain a standard of “world leading.” The simple fact that others successfully try to copy the process should encourage the US to continue. In a changing world though where the standards of research openness are not shared anymore, managing the risks better than in the past becomes essential. Research openness and specifically international collaboration with friends and opponents always carries the risk of unwanted release of information. Industrial espionage in the private sector does have negative economic impact, can threaten national security, or lose competitive advantages. Over the past few years, there has been a significant rise in the systematic collection of intellectual property on a broad scale within the domains of private, public, and national security sectors. This development has had a profound impact on the global research community. Research openness is commonly understood and shared by much of the World's science community and led by the US, for long was captured in a quite simple National Security Decision Directive (NSDD-189). Essentially: “It's open until it's classified”. While NSDD-189 wasn't abandoned officially yet, effectively it has been in many instances. New definitions “CUI = Confidential but Unclassified Information,” central control of international collaboration agreements, top down managed travel restrictions of “going to” or “inviting in”, strictly enforced Conflict of Interest agreements are all existing elements in a new world that grapples with the balance between openness and benefit from it versus risk of losing. The US needs a pipeline of trained engineers, scientists, and entrepreneurs. Without inviting a substantial foreign national contingent into our schools and universities from which many will typically stay, it is not clear that US demographics would even allow the US alone to fill this pipeline. Whether it is the academic or private sector: it is essential to understand in more detail how international collaboration provided and can provide in the future economic benefit, intelligence insight, faster scientific discoveries, and sometimes even aiding diplomatic efforts and continue to bring the best and brightest innovators to the US. As part of the project, each of these elements (faster scientific advance – economic benefit – intelligence & insight – demographics & talent recruiting) will be addressed.

During this episode, Dr. Brian Weeden, Director of Program Planning, Secure World Foundation will discuss working with governments, industry, international organization and others to hopefully avoid conflicts in space, supporting a safer, more sustainable space environment. Hear Dr. Weeden talk about the number of constellations currently in space and the role commercial industry has played in managing over 7,000 payloads. He raises concerns regarding how different constellations will operate close to each other and how they will interface - especially if they each have their own autonomous maneuvering systems. Dr. Weeden discusses the commercial industry offering more diversified sources of data collection and more information into how space awareness data is generated. With different objectives than the military, there is more transparency in the commercial industry.

The Ferryman Collective were back at SXSW presenting another immersive theatre piece in virtual reality, but this time they were translating an adapted a piece called Find WiiLii that was originally produced in South Korea by GiiÖii Immersive Studio. Set in a far-future, science-fiction VRChat world, the creators wanted to invite participants to do more open world explorations this section of a nostalgic city that recreates architecture from a section of Seoul. This piece also explore staging of immersive characters that are much more dynamic in how they move through a space to the point where there are some literal chase scenes and elevation changes that mirror a building and culmination of dramatic tension. Overall, Find WiiLii is a synthesis of best practices from immersive theatre, but is also start to explore the types of interactive, participatory, and immersive qualities of a story that could only happen within VR. I had a chance to catch up with Whitton Frank, who is the director of the English-version of Find WiiLii, as well as an Immersive Producer, Performer, and member of Ferryman Collective. Also joining us were Jay Kim & Hyewon Lee, Executive Producers from GiiÖii Immersive Studio. We talk about the unique international collaboration between the Ferryman Collective and GiiÖii Immersive Studio as GiiÖii licensed Welcome to Respite as announced back on April 6, 2022. This lead to an international collaboration of translating immersive experiences across cultures, and then GiiÖii invited the Ferryman Collective to help translate Find WiiLii from it's original Korean version into English as it was accepted into SXSW. We talk about this unique collaboration, design process, and their further innovations of the immersive theatre format in VR in this discussion.

This interview was recorded on February 10, 2022. If you'd asked Mona Sutphen at graduation what her career would look like, she might've mentioned a path into the film industry or advertising; somewhere far removed from the public service and community organizing world of her parents. Despite that, at the suggestion of her college advisor, she took the Foreign Service exam upon graduation and then promptly forgot about it, moved to Chicago, and began her career in advertising.  That is until a late-night spreadsheet disaster led to a wake-up call declaration that “there has to be more to life than selling shampoo.” A few weeks later, Mona got the call that she'd passed the Foreign Service exam, sparking a decades-long career in the foreign service and public sector.  This week's guest is the adventurous, inquisitive Mona Sutphen, former White House Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy under President Obama and current Partner/Head of Investment Strategies at Vistria. Mona grew up in a multiracial, community-oriented family in Milwaukee. In this episode, she shares her insights on working with global decision-makers throughout her distinguished career in public service and her ongoing dedication to problem-solving on the world stage. In the latter half of the episode, Mona discusses the undeniable future of crypto (and its regulation), the evolving ecosystem of decentralized finance (DeFi), and the potential of greater microloan access.
