Who is responsible for making a work of art? In each episode of this collaborative podcast series, one anthropologist, specialising in a particular cultural context, has a conversation with an artist of their choosing, exploring issues of authorship and responsibility in art. Ranging across geographical locations and creative practices, discussions address and unpack the conceptualisation of the artistic person, authorship as centred upon an individual or bounded group, and the development of responsibility for artworks during and after their making. Each episode brings a fresh perspective on where ideas come from, what agency an artist feels in the creation of their work, and how, and in which contexts, ownership and responsibility for the artwork are claimed. Ultimately, as a collection, the series encourages listeners to think about ‘the artist' and ‘the artwork' as dynamic processes in a relationship of authoring. Series 3, Episode 7 of Artery features Florentina Manuel Martínez with Michele A. Feder-Nadoff and Claudia Rocha Valverde Florentina Manuel Martínez is a textile artist originally from the state of Veracruz, in the municipality of Chicontepec, in the community of Ateno. She is a Náhuatl language speaker. Currently she is living in Tamaletom (the municipality of Tancanhuitz, in the state of San Luis Potosí, México). Florentina is married to a Tének flyer man of Tamaletom. (Tének is an Indigenous group of Mexico and flying refers to the traditional ritual dance of prehispanic origins.) Florentina has lived in Tamaleton for 18 years and has learned much about the Tének culture. Michele A. Feder-Nadoff is an artist and anthropologist whose practice and research is concerned with the meaning of making [https://mfedernadoff.academia.edu]. Her longterm ethnography in Santa Clara del Cobre, Michoacán, México began in 1997 initiated by her apprenticeship with a master coppersmith, Maestro Jesús Pérez Ornelas. This led to her founding the non-profit Cuentos Foundation, becoming a Fulbright Scholar and cultural anthropologist, PhD, El Colegio de Michoacán. Her critical aesthetics integrates onto-epistemology, performance, and phenomenology with multimodal and collaborative methods designed to decolonize education, art and anthropology. Her artwork is included in private and public collections worldwide. Recent publications include her edited volume, Performing Craft in Mexico: Artisans, Aesthetics and the Power of Translation, 2022, Lexington (Bloomsbury Press), her monograph An Anthropology of Making in Santa Clara del Cobre: Presence of Absence, 2024, Palgrave, and numerous book chapters and articles. She is the assistant editor of the Journal of Embodied Research and an independent scholar, translator, curator, video-producer, lecturer and a multimodal workshop facilitator. Claudia Rocha Valverde, PhD in Art History is a professor and investigator at El Colegio de San Luis (COLSAN) in the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Center in Mexico. Her fieldwork is in the region of Huasteca in the state of San Luis Potosi, where she has carried out research on contemporary traditions of pre-Hispanic origins. In particular, she has specialized in how the knowledge of Indigenous Nahua and Tének women is manifested in the history and symbolism of their clothing, which they wear today in ceremonial contexts related to the concept of Madre Tierra, Mother Earth, which reflects the natural environment in which they live.
Full Text of ReadingsFriday of the Fourth Week of Lent Lectionary: 248The Saint of the day is Saint Isidore of SevilleSaint Isidore of Seville's Story The 76 years of Isidore's life were a time of conflict and growth for the Church in Spain. The Visigoths had invaded the land a century and a half earlier, and shortly before Isidore's birth they set up their own capital. They were Arians—Christians who said Christ was not God. Thus, Spain was split in two: One people (Catholic Romans) struggled with another (Arian Goths). Isidore reunited Spain, making it a center of culture and learning. The country served as a teacher and guide for other European countries whose culture was also threatened by barbarian invaders. Born in Cartagena of a family that included three other sibling saints—Leander, Fulgentius and Florentina—he was educated by his elder brother, whom he succeeded as bishop of Seville. An amazingly learned man, he was sometimes called “The Schoolmaster of the Middle Ages” because the encyclopedia he wrote was used as a textbook for nine centuries. He required seminaries to be built in every diocese, wrote a Rule for religious orders, and founded schools that taught every branch of learning. Isidore wrote numerous books, including a dictionary, an encyclopedia, a history of Goths, and a history of the world—beginning with creation! He completed the Mozarabic liturgy, which is still in use in Toledo, Spain. For all these reasons, Isidore has been suggested as patron of the Internet. Several others—including Anthony of Padua—also have been suggested. He continued his austerities even as he approached age 80. During the last six months of his life, he increased his charities so much that his house was crowded from morning till night with the poor of the countryside. Reflection Our society can well use Isidore's spirit of combining learning and holiness. Loving, understanding and knowledge can heal and bring a broken people back together. We are not barbarians like the invaders of Isidore's Spain. But people who are swamped by riches and overwhelmed by scientific and technological advances can lose much of their understanding love for one another. Full Text of ReadingsThursday of the First Week in Lent Lectionary: 227The Saint of the day is Saint Leander of SevilleSaint Leander of Seville's Story The next time you recite the Nicene Creed at Mass, think of today's saint. For it was Leander of Seville who, as bishop, introduced the practice in the sixth century. He saw it as a way to help reinforce the faith of his people and as an antidote against the heresy of Arianism, which denied the divinity of Christ. By the end of his life, Leander had helped Christianity flourish in Spain at a time of political and religious upheaval. Leander's own family were staunch Christians: his brothers Isidore and Fulgentius were named bishops, and their sister Florentina became an abbess. Leander entered a monastery as a young man and spent three years in prayer and study. At the end of that tranquil period he was made a bishop. For the rest of his life he worked strenuously to fight against heresy. The death of the anti-Christian king in 586 helped Leander's cause. He and the new king worked hand in hand to restore orthodoxy and a renewed sense of morality. Leander succeeded in persuading many Arian bishops to change their loyalties. Leander died around 600. In Spain, he is honored as a Doctor of the Church. Reflection As we pray the Nicene Creed every Sunday, we might reflect on the fact that that same prayer is not only being prayed by every Catholic throughout the world, but by many other Christians as well. Saint Leander introduced its recitation as a means of uniting the faithful. Let's pray that the recitation may enhance that unity today. Why are the saints so popular?

Urban farmer and seed advocate Florentina Rodriguez talks seeds, seeds and, you guessed it, seeds. Hear about how Florentina started her Flora Seeds, all thanks to seeing the need for a community seed library in her village of Yellow Springs, Ohio. Her interest in seed education and in helping people save, share and grow seeds grew from there. As more people started becoming more aware of the vulnerabilities of our global food system, they also started paying attention to where their food comes from, which invariably leads back to seeds, seed keeping and seed sovereignty. Florentina explores the multiple pathways that bring people into having an interest in seeds, ranging from food security to political resistance and cultural interests. Learn how the Yellow Springs Community Seed Library works and how people can “check out” and donate seeds. Florentina explains how she checks in with seed library users to be sure they are getting along with their seeds and to improve the system for everyone. She tells us, too, about some of her favorite seeds that have been contributed to the seed library. (Have you ever heard of elephant dill?) With sights set on having an even larger impact than what a seed library offers, Florentina is also working with seed commons—communal resources of seed collections, seed keepers and seed protectors on a regional level. She talks about farmers, gardeners and community people who are building these networks to exchange seeds, share skills and continue specific seeds' stories. Florentina also discusses how university and government interests are impacting the spirit behind seed commons and why it's important to have both regionally based community seed commons and university/government programs but not necessarily the two combined. She also makes the case for when and why you might want to work with folks in your region to start your own seed commons. Listen to the end to hear about Eden's Harvest urban farm in Dayton, Ohio, which is a certified native wildlife habitat and center for growing food and educating neighbors and local students about food and farming. In this episode, I'm joined by Lexy Florentina, a trauma-trained somatic practitioner, to chat about: How does trauma impact our daily life? Can we finally live trauma-free? How does a daily life impacted by trauma actually look like? How do we expand our capacity for life's ups and downs? Lexy is a Trauma Trained Somatic Practitioner helping people release stored stress, elevate their relationships and reconnect with their body. She has completed over 500 hours of client work and training in Trauma Informed Coaching, PolyVagal Theory, Attachment Theory, Internal Family Systems, Somatic Experiencing and Holistic Health. But with the professional work aside, She is, first and foremost, a human who has experienced complex trauma, childhood trauma and chronic health challenges. As a practitioner and space-holder, she comes with empathy for and understanding of what it's like to feel stuck, in pain, and living in a cycle that can't seem to be escaped. In the midst of her own journey, she discovered just how possible it is to experience change and to cultivate a new relationship with our bodies and the world around us. Through learning the language of her body and how symptoms are messages, small changes began to show up. It was through the consistent practice of being more IN her body rather than DOING things to FIX her body that transformation slowly began to unravel. Over the years, what she has come to know is that our bodies are brilliant and capable, and no matter where you are on your path, you make sense. ✨Connect with Lexy: https://lexyflorentina.com/ https://www.instagram.com/lexyflorentina/ ❥❥❥ Thank you so much for being here! Secession Podcast: Members is a series of conversations featuring members of the Secession. This episode is a conversation between the member Florentina Pakosta and the curator Melissa Lumbroso and the curator Jürgen Tabor. It was recorded on May 16, 2022. Florentina Pakosta (b. 1933) is an Austrian artist and pioneer of the feminist avant-garde. Initially active as an artist working with drawing, a socio-critical realism prevailed at first, successively leading through the reduction of forms to her characteristic, abstract-geometric tricolour paintings. From 1952 to 1960 she studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague and Vienna. In 1971 she became a member of the Secession and from 1975 to 1983 she was its first female board member. In 1978 she curated the exhibition Secessionistinnen. Since 1975, the artist has published numerous short stories and art-theoretical texts. Her works are represented in renowned collections and museums, including the Albertina and the Museum der Moderne Salzburg. In 2023 she received the Austrian Art Prize. Jürgen Tabor has been curator of the Generali Foundation Collection – Permanent Loan to the Museum der Moderne Salzburg since July 2019. He studied art history as well as English and American studies at the University of Innsbruck. Until 2017 he was curator, deputy and interim director of TAXISPALAIS, Kunsthalle Tirol, then curator of the Klocker Foundation and the Biennale Innsbruck International. As a freelance curator he realized projects in Bolzano, Madrid, Vienna, Budapest and Dornbirn, among others. He is the author of numerous texts on 20th century and contemporary art and has taught at the universities of Innsbruck and Graz. Melissa Lumbroso (b. 1980 in Paris) is assistant curator at the Albertina in Vienna, where she has collaborated on several group exhibitions, e.g. Drawing Now: 2015, as well as on large-scale exhibitions dedicated to Keith Haring, Florentina Pakosta, Hermann Nitsch, Xenia Hausner, Ai Weiwei and Yoshitomo Nara. She established “Kunst@IHS” in 2017, a series of exhibitions with contemporary artists at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Vienna. Since 2020, Lumbroso has been developing an online catalogue raisonné with over 3,000 drawings and paintings by Florentina Pakosta with the launch planned for the fall of 2023. The Dorotheum is the exclusive sponsor of the Secession Podcast. Full Text of ReadingsTuesday of Holy Week Lectionary: 258The Saint of the day is Saint Isidore of SevilleSaint Isidore of Seville's Story The 76 years of Isidore's life were a time of conflict and growth for the Church in Spain. Full Text of ReadingsMonday of the Third Week of Lent Lectionary: 237The Saint of the day is Saint Leander of SevilleSaint Leander of Seville's Story The next time you recite the Nicene Creed at Mass, think of today's saint. Saint of the Day, Copyright Franciscan Media

When Mihaela was 9, she went to a park and saw some kids inline skating. She didn't realize it was actually for the winter sport of speed skating, but she was curious enough to give it a try herself: "In that moment, I decided my life. Here I am 13 years later, still doing it" despite the fact that Romania doesn't have any rinks for her to train on. Mihaela is now her country's fastest female speed skater. In this episode, Mihaela reveals how the life of a professional athlete during COVID-19 has actually been quite lonely (even in the Olympic village), and what it means to her and others to be the fastest female Romanian Speed Skater in the world. We hear from her sister, Adina, nephew, Darius, and two best friends, Florentina and Madalina.
