This week, we're sharing an interview with Garret Felber, author of the book A Continuous Struggle: The Revolutionary Life of Martin Sostre, out May 5 from AK Press. Garret speaks about the life of Martin Soster, famed jailhouse lawyer who successfully won cases related to the constitutional rights of prisoners, was politicized in prison by the Nation of Islam in the 1950's, ran radical Afro-centric bookstores in Buffalo NY to radicalize the youth, embracing anarchism during his time imprisoned on a frame up during which he was a celebrated political prisoner resisting cavity searches through the courts, went on to organize after his release for tenants rights and rehabilitating disused buildings for community centers and helping run a childcare. Sostre was a mentor to Lorenzo Komb'oa-Ervin and Ashanti Alston and laid important foundations for modern Black Anarchism in the US. A week after Gov. Matt Meyer delivered his first State of the State address, lawmakers embark on their two-week spring recess – an opportunity to regroup before this year's legislative session heads into its stretch run.So where do things stand following Gov. During the recent winter months, many Delawareans have seen a sharp increase in their energy bills – increases large enough to prompt Gov. Matt Meyer and lawmakers to seek ways to help ease the burden those bills are creating. But more sticker shock could be on the way, this time from your water bill as water utilities seek to recover some of the cost of upgrades needed to filter the so-called ‘forever chemicals' known as PFAS out of drinking water. This week, contributor Jon Hurdle reports on what these water rates could look like and if some efforts to rein in energy costs could also help with water bills.

Matt Meyer plan to approach them.

However, Democrats failed to pick up the two seats they needed to grab a House supermajority to go with the one they have in the state Senate.Delaware Public Media political reporter Sarah Petrowich examines what to make of the statewide election results and what we might expect when lawmakers reconvene in January.

Imagine transforming recycled tires into a thriving footwear business, then pivoting to reduce homelessness and run for governor. Sounds impossible, right? Not for Matt Meyer, this week's Outside Insights guest. I had the privilege of speaking with Meyer to explore his approach to leadership, the impactful initiatives he's been part of, and his vision for Delaware's future.Matt's desire to make a positive impact was strong even before his teaching and political career, starting with a move to Kenya. After serving as a diplomat in Iraq, where he was embedded with the army, Matt returned to the U.S. and—you wouldn't have guessed it—began teaching sixth and seventh-grade math. During his time as a teacher, he became dissatisfied with the state's education system. Driven by a desire to create meaningful change, Meyer decided to run for office. Despite initial skepticism from his family and the challenge of facing a well-established incumbent, his grassroots campaign led to an unexpected victory. This experience underscored his belief in community-driven initiatives and the power of perseverance—both popular topics here at Outside Insights.Matt's desire to make a positive impact was strong even before his teaching and political career and started with a move to Kenya. There, he co-founded a footwear company that created sandals from recycled tires. This venture provided employment and economic opportunities in one of Nairobi's poorest neighborhoods and the challenges and successes of this endeavor gave him a unique perspective on economic development.Today, as the chief executive of New Castle County, Delaware's largest county, Matt Meyer oversees essential services such as law enforcement, emergency response, libraries, parks, and affordable housing. His leadership focuses on practical solutions that directly impact people's lives over political rhetoric. “We don't make promises, we make plans, and then our job is to turn those plans into real progress.” – Matt Meyer Meyer's vision for Delaware as governor is focused on three key areas: improving education, healthcare, and housing. Drawing on his background as a teacher, he aims to elevate Delaware's education system. In healthcare, he seeks to make services more accessible and effective, inspired by his wife's experience as an emergency room physician. Additionally, he plans to tackle the state's affordable housing shortage to ensure more Delawareans have stable homes. This is the slightly edited version of our December 5th livestream with film director, producer, screenwriter, rapper, and communist Boots Riley. He is the lead vocalist of the musical groups The Coup and Street Sweeper Social Club. He wrote and directed the film Sorry to Bother You and is the creator and director of the television series I'm A Virgo. We talked to Boots Riley about the recent labor upsurge, including the wave of strikes and increasing militancy among workers in the US. We briefly discuss United Auto Workers' call for a ceasefire in the war on Gaza and establishment of a Divestment and Just Transition working group. We also discuss navigating the capitalist film and television industry as a communist and possibilities for organizing among creatives. Boots also answers some questions about making anticapitalist art including some behind the scenes insights from I'm A Virgo. We want to shout-out Boots Riley for joining us for this discussion and definitely recommend I'm A Virgo if people haven't watched it yet. I also want to say there's some really special content we released in the month of December on our YouTube channel. Including our conversation with Steven Salaita and our conversation on Kuwasi Balagoon with several comrades of his and movement elders including Ashanti Alston, David Gilbert, dequi kioni-sadiki, Matt Meyer, Meg Starr, & Bilal Sunni-Ali so if you haven't checked that out yet, make sure you do at youtube.com/@makcapitalism. This will be our final episode released in 2023. We have a ton of stuff already being edited for release for 2024. This year we released 67 audio episodes, 26 livestreams and our content was listened to or watched over 640,000 times. We're proud of that, and we're also proud that our programs are still entirely dependent upon regular folks like yourself who listen and watch the work we put out. Today is your last day of 2023 to support us and that would be much appreciated, but also we hope many of you who have not become patrons of the show yet will do so in 2024. And we want to profusely thank everyone who supported us in 2023 for making the show possible for another year. On the podcast this week to discuss the best way to plan your pre-season running is Matt Meyer, who competes with the competitive crew of The Track Club in Boulder, CO. Matt is both a running coach and strength coach, and he joined me on a previous episode of the podcast to talk about high-mileage training. He recently ran a marathon PR of 2:34:35 in Berlin, and set a back squat PR of 265 pounds. Who says fast marathoners can't be strong?! Matt and I address the concept of a pre-season versus an off-season and why time away from heavy training is a great opportunity to address any weaknesses or imbalances you may have. Our conversation will help you get the most out of both your pre-reason and race-specific training. We discuss: Why Matt's recent PR training cycle necessitated more time off The importance of true rest for physical and psychological recovery Why pre-season is a great time to become a more well-rounded runner How to use past training cycles to plan the length of your pre-season and race-specific training Using pre-season training as a chance for a new stimulus Limiting pre-season intensity to avoid burnout Matt's positive energy and nuanced approach to training will benefit runners of all levels! Links & Resources from the Show: Follow Matt on Instagram and Strava Learn more about Matt Listen to my previous episode with Matt on high mileage running Read more about base-building Don't miss out on our complimentary strength series Thank you MOBO Board! Invented by renowned physical therapist Jay Dicharry, MOBO helps you stabilize your stance with an innovative rocker board that's set up on two fins. The design effectively forces you to drive your big toe into the board to improve your stability. I was pretty arrogant going into my first session on the MOBO Board. How hard can it be to balance, right? Well, I was humbled pretty quickly! Even if you're a good runner, better balance, stability, and proprioception is going to help you have a more powerful stride and prevent more running injuries. You'll learn how to improve the efficiency of the kinetic chain from your hip to your big toe. Because as Jay likes to say, it's not just how strong you are, but how well you use that strength. I was just at a weekend physical therapy workshop (lol I was the only running coach) and learned how important (and rare) this simple movement is.
