Graeme Park is a legendary DJ and one of the founders of the UK's house music movement. Best known for his nine-year residency at Manchester's iconic superclub, The Hacienda, Graeme's journey into DJing was far from planned. In fact, he stumbled into it almost by accident. However, his passion for sharing the music he loved had a huge impact on the dance scene of the 80s and 90s, influencing a generation of club-goers, including sixteen year old James O'Brien.Today, Graeme continues to perform to fans old and new around the world. He also DJs alongside the Manchester Camerata Orchestra as part of the Hacienda Classical shows, which have been touring the UK since 2016 and even opened the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury in 2017.You can find out more details about Graeme's upcoming gigs on thisisgraemepark.com

Remix & Recombine: How to put things together to make something new, with Graeme Park

In this episode of Future Proof Your Career we're looking at recombination: how to bring old things together to make something new. To help us to get our heads around mixing and remixing, we have a real expert in the studio today. Graeme Park has been one of the biggest names in the house music scene since the late 1980s. Well known for his residency at the Hacienda and long stints on a number of major radio stations, Graeme remixed tracks by the likes of Brand New Heavies, New Order, Eric B & Rakim, and Sophie Ellis-Bextor.  Graeme has most recently been one of the founding forces behind Hacienda Classical, bringing together classic dance tunes with a full live orchestra. He has even found himself behind the microphone, going back to his musician roots. Here's what we learned from Graeme: Remixing is a creative art! Just because you're working with existing components, it doesn't mean this isn't real innovation. Recombining things can fulfill that creative urge.Seperate the technical skills required to remix something from the relevant domain knowledge. You may only have one or the other. For example, you might understand the business processes you're working with, or the industry sector. But you might not know the technology or have the political clout to build something new. Partner with someone who does.Play with your tools and components. Get to know the things that are at your disposal. What can you draw on in terms of resources: people, data, partners, platforms? And what can you use to stick them together? Software, systems, or just a telephone and some bits of paper?Agility: respond to what the audience wants. Don't set out with a singular vision and keep pursuing it without showing it to anyone. Get it out there early and change direction based on feedback.Collaborate. Bring in different ideas, perspectives and skill sets. You don't want design by committee but you're more likely to succeed with two heads than one.

The Haçienda, often referred to simply as "The Haç," was a legendary nightclub located in Manchester, United Kingdom. It played a pivotal role in shaping the UK's clubbing and music culture, particularly during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Here's a quick history of The Hacienda and its significance for those who don't know and a refresh for those that do!1. Founding and Early Years (1982-1986):The Hacienda was founded in 1982 by members of the band New Order (formerly Joy Division) and their label, Factory Records. The club was initially envisioned as a space where Factory artists and friends could enjoy live performances and DJ sets. It was situated in a former yacht showroom on Whitworth Street in Manchester.2. Dance Music and Acid House (Late 1980s):In the late 1980s, The Hacienda underwent a transformation. It embraced the emerging dance music scene and played a crucial role in popularizing the acid house movement in the UK. The club began hosting regular dance nights, bringing in pioneering DJs such as Mike Pickering and Graeme Park. The club's unique blend of electronic music, colorful lights, and innovative design created an atmosphere that attracted a diverse crowd.3. Madchester and Ecstasy Culture (Late 1980s - Early 1990s):During this period, The Hacienda became synonymous with the Madchester scene, a cultural movement that combined alternative rock music, dance, and fashion. The rise of ecstasy (MDMA) culture further fueled the club's popularity, as the drug's euphoric effects aligned with the music and ambiance of the venue.4. Legendary Performances and DJs:The Hacienda hosted iconic performances by artists like The Happy Mondays, 808 State, and A Guy Called Gerald. International DJs, including the likes of Paul Oakenfold and Sasha, also graced its decks. The club's reputation for cutting-edge music, innovative visuals, and avant-garde design drew people from across the UK and beyond.5. Financial Struggles and Closure (Late 1990s):Despite its cultural impact, The Hacienda struggled financially due to mismanagement, high costs, and issues with violence and drug use. In 1997, the club's owners declared bankruptcy, and The Hacienda closed its doors for the last time in 1997. The closure marked the end of an era for the UK club scene.6. Legacy and Influence:The Hacienda's legacy remains imprinted on UK clubbing culture. It helped bridge the gap between alternative rock and dance music, influencing subsequent generations of DJs, producers, and clubbers. The venue's forward-thinking approach to design, music curation, and technology set a standard that many other clubs aspired to emulate. The Hacienda was a trailblazing nightclub that significantly impacted UK clubbing culture. It pioneered the fusion of electronic and alternative music, fostered a sense of unity among diverse audiences, and played a central role in popularizing the ecstasy-fueled dance music movement. Its cultural impact continues to reverberate in the music, design, and nightlife scenes of Manchester and beyond.

World of Twist, The Farm, Northside, The Soup Dragons, Blur. On this episode it’s my pleasure to showcase a few tracks from the upcoming Hot Digits Year 7 compilation that’s out at the end of May, and that I have somehow managed to become involved in. I’ve got my contribution, as well as tracks from Andy Buchan, The Velvet Stripes, Stephen Richards and Ross Fitz, all of whom are joining me on what is a truly excellent compilation. I’ve also got new heat from Disco Lust, old heat from Change, George Duke and The Meters and other funky bric a brac. In the second hour I bring you a guest mix from Scottish DJ and music obsessive Ewan Mack. Hailing from Aberdeen but now living in Edinburgh, Ewan's love of music started from an early age when he started to listen to soul, funk and disco in the early 80s. In 1993, Ewan discovered house music after listening to a Graeme Park mix on Pete Tong's essential mix. A pair of belt drive turntables and basic mixer were purchased shortly afterwards and Ewan started DJing at house parties and birthday parties while at University. The belt drives were upgraded to 1210s which he still owns and Ewan continued to play at local nights in Aberdeen. He was a finalist in Cream's search for a resident DJ competition in 2002 just before it closed its doors! While a family and a career have taken over, Ewan still likes to collect a broad range of disco and soulful house-music although the tempo has moderated over the years. He makes regular recordings to share with like-minded music fans and started streaming on twitch during lockdown 2020. He references Graeme Park (fellow Aberdeen FC fan), MAW, Dave Lee, Norman Jay, Dimitri from Paris and Frankie Knuckles as major influencers. Ewan got in touch a while back to share some of his mixes, and as soon as I listened to one I had to invite him to record one for the show. Ewan’s mix is an expert selection of nu-disco delights, sometimes verging into soulful house, lots of reworks of classics, really funky, just what I look for in a guest mix. Big thanks to Ewan for a great mix, and if you like what you hear please head to Ewan’s Soundcloud and check out his other mixes. https://soundcloud.com/ewan-mack I’m back in two weeks bringing you a full on soulful mix from top bloke Iry Sabir - see you then! In the meantime, don’t forget that there’s a treasure trove of great shows to explore on Stream101’s Mixcloud - mixcloud.com/stream101 (PS, I made the rookie error of playing one of the tracks that Ewan dropped in my hour - argh! My bad, but that new Disco Lust tune is so good it deserves to be played twice!) I have been DJ-ing now for about 28 years. I was always into hip hop as a teenager but going to my local club the Pleasuredrome in Farnworth UK and watching the likes of DJ legend Sasha made me want to get involved in the House music scene. I started DJ-ing professionally at a club called Monroes in Great Harwood, near Blackburn, which although only small had a great reputation across the North-West in the early 90s for its house music and atmosphere playing alongside BOWA and TRIPLE X and guests such as NIPPER , STU ALLAN & WELLY . I left Monroes after 4 years and I moved onto Maximes in Wigan, working with an agency called Hypnotic promotions. Being with Hypnotic allowed me to play at such venues as The Hacienda (Manchester), Mr Smiths (Warrington), Park Hall (Wigan) and The Dry Bar (Manchester). After a couple of years I moved onto Federation in Blackpool, playing house music along side DJs Scott Bond, Alex P, Danielle Davoli and Smokin Jo to name just a few. I have since played at a multitude of clubs around the North of England and Europe alongside DJs Dave Morales, Sonique, Graeme Park, Joey Negro, DJ Disciple, Jim Shaft Ryan, Oliver Lang, Lottie, Mark Luvdup and Tim Lennox. I then co-promoted our own club nights under the name Souled Out. Our regular monthly events took place at various venues in the north west including sankeys soap also a new venue in london called the copyright club nr London bridge. Also a project called BACK TO FUNK which is organising parties playing upfront funky house etc.. I also got involved with an events organisation in Amsterdamnon a regular basis playing at there events with djs including Jorgensen, Marcella, Lucien Foort, Martijn Ten Velden, Fedde le Grand and more... I also play a slower funky house disco vibe similar to that of artists such as the unabombers, moodymann, trus-me and greg wilson . . In the past few years I have been involved in the old skool scene playing regular for Rejuvenation (Leeds and Corfu) and SOS Ibiza and teamed up with my good friend Luke greenhalgh AKA DJ LUKSTA under the name DUN n DUSTED and we can be seen at the the Indian summer and other upcoming events ... Some clubs I've played over the years....
