This episode jumps into a tour year that we don't often talk about on the pod - the final year of the Backspacer tour in 2012. This year featured 13 shows over in Europe and a few additional festival shows in the US, and for this one we'll cover the show that kicked off the entire year in Manchester, UK. No, it's probably not the Manchester show that you'd think. We're not covering the show that features the one and only performance of Hitchhiker. But there are plenty of things about this show worthy of conversation, performance wise and storyline wise. In Pearl Jam's history, there's been somewhat of a stigma that surrounds two different types of shows - tour openers and night ones. This show happens to be both. The stigma about tour openers is that they can tend to come off a little bit flat, there's a concern over the equipment sounding the way it needs to sound and the fact that there is usually a somewhat significant time frame since the last performance. Night ones can sometimes have a very similar reputation as well, as many people consider night two as the show where they'll bust out rarities and surprises. We'll take a chunk of time at the beginning of the episode talking about how the band has essentially worked on erasing these stigmas within the last few tour years, with the band pulling out very solid tour opening shows as well as some night one shows that were far better than their night two counterparts. And yes, getting into the performances too! We'll spend time talking about how and why Stone overpowered McCready on the big time songs at this show such as Even Flow and Porch, and get into a short take on a great song from a hometown Manchester band that has relevance in the Pearl Jam canon. Researchers at the International Energy Research Centre (IERC), based at Tyndall National Institute, are leading research into the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to develop a deeper understanding of the complex factors impacting energy poverty. The project, entitled the Irish Energy Poverty Observatory (IREPO), aims to provide a unique platform that will enable research, development, and policymaking in this area. Energy poverty, where households cannot afford or access sufficient energy services, is influenced by various social, economic, and environmental factors. Existing approaches to understanding energy poverty are limited in their ability to capture all dimensions of the issue, relying heavily on income and expenditure metrics. IREPO aims to overcome these limitations with an innovative, data-driven approach. IREPO, led by Dr Fábio Silva and Dr Pádraig Lyons, is a collaboration between IERC, Professor Aoife Foley from the University of Manchester UK, Professor Patricia Kearney from UCC's School of Public Health and Non-Governmental Organisations who advocate for those experiencing energy poverty, The Wheel and South-East Energy Agency (SEEA). The development of the observatory will leverage from international best practice, and the approach can be used in other jurisdictions to provide similar insights. The project will integrate and synthesise data from an array of sources, including surveys, historical databases, and census data. AI and machine learning algorithms will underpin the development of tools to analyse the diverse dataset and scenarios that a comprehensive view of energy poverty would demand and help identify key factors and trends. The approach will assist policymakers and stakeholders in forming effective strategies and policies to alleviate energy poverty in the context of uncertain geopolitical situations and the urgent need to decarbonise societies throughout the world. Dr Fábio Silva, Senior Research Engineer at the IERC, said: "The development of the Irish Energy Poverty Observatory should provide a unique platform to improve policy actions and support research in this area." Dr Aoife Foley, University of Manchester, said: "Professor Patricia Kearney and I are very excited to work on this novel and world-leading interdisciplinary SEAI-funded project, with Dr Fabio Silva and Dr Padraig Lyons from the IERC, which will develop innovative approaches to analyse, and address the health, well-being, and economic impacts of climate change and Net Zero roadmaps on society to ensure effective and targeted solutions to guide, direct and inform decision-making for all public, private and citizen stakeholders." The project is funded by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI).

Episode Intro:Most organizations are struggling with skill shortages and retention of talent. A lack of social connection at work is a widespread problem – made worse by remote and hybrid work. Did you know that: 57% of employees feel invisible at work. 20% of new hires will quit their job in the first 45 days. Many don't even show up on day one (particularly when the gap between offer and start date is long). According to a 2021 research study by McKinsey, a lack of connection and appreciation is the number one driver for attrition! In fact, people are nearly three times more likely to quit because they don't feel like they belong at work than because of poor compensation. It is Dr. Aliaa Remtilla's mission to help companies foster stronger, more authentic human connections amongst their employees. She is the Chief Scientist and Co-Founder of StoryTiling: a platform that uses anthropology and tech to bring more authenticity to workplace relationships; a simple, automated way to create impactful, personalised films that show employees they matter. 12th Episodes! And today we have a very special guest, a game designer that has been influential to my work and to so many other game designers I admire as well, Chris McDowell! Chris is a TTRPG designer in Manchester UK, known for Into the Odd, Electric Bastionland, and the upcoming Mythic Bastionland. He makes rules-light flavour-heavy games and writes at bastionland.com. I had the pleasure and honor to meet Chris at Gen Con 2023. We talked a little bit, I gave him some of my games, and it was certainly one of the highlights of the convention for me.  It's hard to know what to say about Chris McDowall's work. He creates ver well thought out and crafted games that are very simple to use, but that have so much depth both in terms of setting and mechanics to explore. His work, as he says himself, has influence from miniature games and boardgames and reminds me some of my favorite of those games. Those that have very simple and minimal mechanics but that offer so much possibility and space for exploration for them. This lets everyone play the game, but offer those interested in it a lot of room for mastery. He is also very generous with the knowledge he accumulated making games and studying them. Not only his games have an unique way to teach of how to play them better and to make the best use of its possibilities, he also maintains a gaming blog where he talks about theory, design, playtesting, and anything gaming related that is really a treasure trove of knowledge. And if that was not enough, Chris is constantly helping out and uplifting other creators, talking about their work in his channels, making the gaming engines he creates available for other to work with for FREE mind you, and a lot more. Anyway, in this chat we got to talk about what is weird, how we find it in the absence of things, how we can explore this "void" in the game design we make. We talked about art, artists, game design and game designers, how non-combat encounters are so interesting, his different creative approaches, what we value and what has a real impact in our lives, our problems with anxiety, and all sorts of weird thing in between. Oh, and we obviously talked quite a bit about his upcoming Mythic Bastionland RPG, which will bring mythology to Bastionland in a total unique way! So listen up, and let's get weird with Chris McDowell! Most Jews have a real difficulty with this holiday. Jews love to eat. We love to shmooze over meals. Then there's Yom Kippur which is notoriously known for the 25-hour fast. Why must we starve ourselves? And why does this tradition go on for so long? How does neglecting my stomach purify me and why is everyone wearing white? In this episode of Bad Jew, Rabbi Jack Melul of AishLIT comes back to the show to shed light on the nuances of Yom Kippur. Yom Kippur is much more than fasting, and as a matter of fact, is considered a joyous holiday. Melul explains to Chaz Volk, host of Bad Jew, how becoming angel-like is the mitzvah that has been commanded of us and why this one particular day holds so much depth. About: Born in Manchester UK, Rabbi Jack Melul spent over 10 years studying in the top Rabbinic Training Academies in the world.
