Spring is here and it's the perfect time to start planning that spring trip to Yellowstone for this travel season or next. Of course Jasmine and Gracie go to Yellowstone Park. Gracie needs to see Old Faithful. But Jasmine loves the rainbow colors of the Grand Prismatic Spring. Find out how there is a rainbow in the water. Amazing!
Today's storyteller is Schuyler Borges! They are a PhD candidate in Astronomy & Planetary Science at Northern Arizona University. Their research, in their own words, is aimed at "understanding how Antarctic microbial communities form remote and in situ biosignatures detectable on rocky, cold planetary bodies in and outside our Solar System". I just find this concept of using Antarctica as an analog for Mars to be just SO COOL and also a totally different approach to research in Antarctica. They are using remote sensing to detect microbes and microbial communities in the Fryxell Basin in the McMurdo Dry Valleys. We talk about how one even does that, about working in Antarctica, what gives the Dry Valleys their name, and how they got into the microbe world. I found it all to be super fascinating and it was great to talk to Schuyler, so enjoy! --- You can find Rachel Villani on Twitter @flyingcypress and Storytellers of STEMM on Facebook and on the shiny new Twitter account @storytellers42. You can find Schuyler Borges on Twitter @PlanetSkyentist or on their website: https://schuylerborges.weebly.com/. Because you can't see photos on a podcast, the two hot springs we talk about are the Grand Prismatic Spring in Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, United States, and the Champagne Pool at Wai-o-tapu Thermal Reserve in Rotorua, New Zealand. Recorded on 22 October 2020.
Wrapping up our trip to Glacier, Yellowstone and Grand Teton - what we didn't have time for that I'd want to be sure to do next time.
Matt runs solo and shares his Yellowstone experience with plenty of tips, reconnect with nature and the outdoors, a quick shoutout to Pioneer School for their mix of in-class and experiential learning, History: The Hayden expedition captured the imagination of congress and they quickly formed the first national park in 1872. Geology: The geothermal activity is impressive chock full of hot springs, mud pots, steam vents, and geysers. Old Faithful is the most famous feature erupts roughly every 90 minutes, the Grand Prismatic Spring is the most photographed and quite stunning, take the time to drive through the geyser basins. Ecology: Head North! Lamar Valley is especially active, bring a spotting scope and a pair of binoculars, be alert sometimes opportunities come up right off the road, know how to look (pay close attention and look for subtle movement), dead animals are a predator buffet, pay attention to kill sites and don't overlook the small creatures. Final pro-tip, visit during the off-season (early spring, fall, and winter). Follow us on the socials by searching the tag @EvoReal or visit us online at www.EvoReal.com
Highlights from Chelsea -Bozeman: Some of my favorite things I did here were visiting the Sage Lodge, as well as Big Sky resort and riding the chairlift all the way up to the top at 11,000 feet, exploring downtown and eating at some great restaurants, doing a local hike with a great company called FlexTrek, and venturing to Hyalite Canyon for sunset. Jackson: My most favorite experience was the guided hike through Yellowstone. With our guide, we visited the overlook of the Grand Prismatic Spring, Fairy Falls, all through lower Yellowstone’s geysers and thermal features, and had a delicious lunch on a lake. This was an awesome way to see this gorgeous and unique area! Midway/Park City/Sundance: Park City was excellent and had my favorite downtown area we visited! My most favorite experience was visiting the Wasatch Brewing Co. in downtown Park City. We came here after a really long hike on Park City Mountain that day and the patio seating was great, the food was excellent, and we just loved the overall vibe of the whole experience! Moab: Moab had my favorite hotel we stayed in, the Red Cliffs Lodge! This property was absolutely beautiful and we had our own private patio overlooking the Colorado River and the Moab red rocks -- gorgeous! I think my favorite thing we did here was the UTV sunset tour! This was a very adventurous excursion that probably would have been out of my comfort zone if my brothers hadn’t joined me, but the sunset views could not be beat and we had a blast! Bryce: Bryce Canyon was amazing and I probably wouldn’t have known to stop here if it wasn’t for your recommendation! I thought this canyon was even more stunning than the Grand Canyon, with the amazing pink and orange colors and the cool hoodoo rock shapes. My favorite thing we did here was a guided hike through the canyon. The canyon is the attraction in this area that’s relatively desolate otherwise, but it is WELL worth the visit! Our hike was great! We also had a great meal at the Bryce Canyon Pines restaurant where they have famous pie -- worth a visit if you’re in the area! Zion: Zion was my favorite National Park experience and is a really quick and easy drive from Bryce! The park is so well organized, great signage everywhere, the shuttles are clean and easy to navigate, and everything you need for a great day is all really conveniently located right there. We hiked The Narrows, which was the most unique and fun hike we did! This hike is all through the Virgin River, so be sure to rent waterproof gear offered at the entrance to the parkSedona: Sedona was my favorite destination of the entire trip! I absolutely loved everything about it and Mii amo is in a league of its own! I added one night in Sedona at a different hotel before checking into Mii amo and would highly recommend this! Mii amo is in the remote area of Boynton Canyon, which is amazing, but downtown Sedona and the surrounding area has so much to offer that you should absolutely experience before completely disconnecting at Mii amo!I could do a whole chat with you just on Mii amo! One word - wow!!! Amazing! Life-changing! Must do!!! I loved staying in my cozy “casita,” complete with the most comfortable hotel bed I’ve ever slept in and a gorgeous fireplace. Every treatment I enjoyed was extraordinary, unlike anything I’ve ever experienced before, and uniquely personalized for me. I loved starting each morning with yoga in the garden under the red rocks, followed by guided meditation in the Crystal Grotto, a special place inspired by a Native American Kiva. Every meal was made with the most fresh, healthy ingredients and was absolutely delicious. Best of all, there is zero cell service anywhere in the canyon, so disconnection is guaranteed!
One of Yellowstone's most popular attractions, the Grand Prismatic Spring is home to some of the earliest forms of life on Earth.
We tell how we got to experience the best parts of Yellowstone without anyone else around. Also find out what Theresa's all time favorite waterfall is. A couple details that we missed in the podcast are: Steamboat Geyser is known to go off every 3 days to 50 years. 2019 was a record breaking year for eruptions for Steamboat adding up to 47 times. Also the hike behind Grand prismatic Spring is called Grand Prismatic Spring overlook trail.
The distances in Montana are huge and they're starting to drag on Dan and Janice. A simple errand can mean a 70 mile round trip and when the major attraction, Yellowstone, is over 40 miles away and then hundreds of miles of roads inside, it starts to add up. Case in point: Today they drove down to Old Faithful. The whole drive was breathtaking and the geysers, and hot springs that are fed by the supervolcano below Yellowstone (really) are unreal, but it was about a 300 mile round trip. That's a lot for a “day off.” Janice is feeling as weary as her post-surgery days and Dan is feeling more burned out than when he was working. What are they doing to themselves here? Both of them are in recovery and they're decidedly NOT recovering. It's time to make a change. Being able to travel well is about being adaptable, so it's time to adapt.
