On this episode, we have Loren Poncia who is a rancher and the owner at Stemple Creek Ranch. Stemple Creek is supporting regenerative agriculture with their regeneratively-raised beef, lamb, pork, and chicken products mainly sold via their website directly to consumers and also available via select farmers' markets, restaurants, and retailers. Stemple Creek's home ranch in Northern California stretches over more than 1,000 acres and their overall operation manages more than 8,000 acres of land.  In this episode, Loren details the family's journey from conventional dairy to regenerative beef production, why they ended up starting a brand even though he “never wanted to be in the meat business,” and how they've grown to a multi-million dollar regional brand over the past decade. Stemple Creek's commitment to honesty, transparency, and quality was very apparent as Loren shared the story of managing their ranch, developing their brand, and growing their business. He shared his three keys to cracking the code on premium quality and taste in grass-fed beef, how their brand is approaching regenerative certification, and the challenges of maintaining a fresh meat program year-round. In this episode of the Epigenetics Podcast, we talked with Ana Cvejic from the Biotech Research & Innovation Centre at the University of Copenhagen about her work on using sc-multiomics to characterise human developmental hematopoiesis. The conversation starts by delving into Ana's research on hematopoiesis, starting with her work on identifying novel genes controlling blood traits in zebrafish models. She explains her transition to single-cell methodologies and the application of single-cell RNA sequencing to study hematopoietic cells in zebrafish, focusing on thrombocyte lineage commitment and gene expression. The discussion progresses to her groundbreaking study on human fetal hematopoiesis, where she combined single-cell RNA-seq with single-cell ATAC-seq to understand chromatin accessibility and gene expression dynamics. Ana then shares insights into the identification of new cell surface markers and the priming of hematopoietic stem cells, particularly in conditions like Down syndrome. Furthermore, she then elaborates on the construction of a phylogenetic tree of blood development using whole-genome sequencing of single-cell-derived hematopoietic colonies from healthy human fetuses. She explains the motivation behind this study, highlighting the insights gained regarding stem cell quantities, developmental timelines, and mutations in blood development. We're doing things a little differently on this week's episode of Cutting the Curd. Our dear friend and former CTC host Diane Stemple is being recognized by the new world chapter of the Guilde Internationale des Fromagers for her work in the cheese industry. For decades, Diane promoted artisanal cheese makers form the US and abroad, first as a monger, then in sales, then as a brand ambassador, and of course as a co host of this podcast.Diane's niche was interviewing authors about their cheese-centric books. She stepped away from CTC about a year ago, and we want to take this opportunity to honor her as well, by throwing it way back to 2010 when she was a guest of Anne Saxelby on episode 10 of CTC. Their conversation recaps the decade in cheese (2000-2010), which was a big one for artisanal cheese. Diane and Anne held each other in high esteem, and were good friends who shared a passion for cheese. We really hope you enjoy this time capsule, and that you enjoy hearing Anne and Diane's voices!Heritage Radio Network is a listener supported nonprofit podcast network. In fact, after she graduated from college, she became a probation officer in Florida. It wasn't until she was 28 years old that she gave in and joined the family business, publishing her first short story in a book called Famous Writers and Their Kids Write Spooky Stories. The famous writer was her mom, author Jane Yolen. Next up is Kentucky followed by Pennsylvania and New York as the Morgantown-based organization gradually expands to help businesses in Appalachia work together to solve problems for the federal government. “The main backbone of what we do is helping secure SBIR (Small Business Innovation Research) awards,” Ford says, adding, “There are many Phase I and II awards but not many Phase IIIs.” Vertx works to identify companies that want to enter the federal contracting world or expand beyond what they are currently doing. “We help shape their lens of what is possible, pulldown opportunities, and coach them into submitting successful Phase III proposals.” Vertx is funded by a contract from the Air Force Research Laboratory, so the services it offers are free to the client. Those it serves range in size from a single employee to several hundred, and Vertx is not limited to working with companies only interested in working with DoD. The Artemis rockets and the space capsule that will dock and ferry supplies to and from the moon will be built of a special alloy developed and mass produced at Constellium Rolled Products in Jackson County. “We make the plate, then send it to a fabricator who will shape it and form it, then it's sent to a NASA location to be assembled,” explained Constellium CEO Buddy Stemple. The project the company is involved with is called the “SLS Rocket” program, which stands for “Space Launch Systems.” The material is less dense than pure aluminum and can withstand atmospheric heat and the frigid conditions of space.  The alloy, under the trade name AirWare, has been in development at the Ravenswood operation for the past 25 years. Constellium got involved because Boeing, the lead contractor on the project, is a customer.  The product isn't exclusive to the Artemis program. In fact, just about everything going into space these days is a product which started in Ravenswood, West Virginia. “Virtually every rocket going up now from people like Blue Origin and Space X, that's our material too,” Stemple said. David Flora Week Day 4! Something, Something, Poop Deck! (We have to keep with the dick and fart jokes here on H51) Today we are once again back in 2019 to subject Flora to more bot boozed soaked shenanigans as we explore the infamous Ghost Ship- The Mary Celeste! Original Description Imagine this: You and your crew are traversing the Atlantic aboard your merchant ship. You spot something up ahead and grab the spyglass. Is that another ship? You call to the ship announcing your presence…no response. Is there no one aboard? Where's the crew? You board the ship and things are silent. It's too quiet. Something isn't sitting right about this situation. There's a sewing machine with a baby's dress being sewn…the hem is still mid-stitch. The log book's last entry? 10 days ago. Where did the crew go? What would cause them to abandon ship so abruptly without any signs of duress? Did they leave the ship willingly? What happened to the Mary Celeste – we investigate this week. Plus, David Flora of Blurry Photos Podcast makes his triumphant return once again. Conspiracy Bot pivots his game plan for Bot Booze. Brent circles back around on how C-Bot is paying for it. And we all learn that poisonous, bad-tasting, and foul-smelling are table stakes for any product the robot creates. All of that and more on the podcast that's never discovered a ghost ship, but took a Carnival Cruise once that was almost as scary – Hysteria 51.Special thanks to this week's research sources:Research Assistant - Raymond Walden IVBooksThe Mary Celeste: An Unsolved Mystery from History | Jane Yolen, Heidi E.
