Habits 2 Goals: The Habit Factor® Podcast with Martin Grunburg | Goal Achievement, Productivity & Success – Simplified

“If the only tool you have is a hammer, you tend to see every problem as a nail.” ~Abraham MaslowThis Habits 2 Goals episode is FREE for ALL subscribers. The other day, a good friend (former professor and a professional writer) – a man whose top value is a “learning mindset” – said something that caught my attention.“I've realized the importance of ‘dumb stuff.' It's the dumb stuff that supports the smart stuff.”“The dumb stuff supports the smart stuff.”It's brilliant! I loved the idea and sentiment.Running doesn't require much intelligence yet; after he runs, he's a better writer.Sleep doesn't require much or any intelligence yet; after he rests, he's a better writer. After a few days of contemplating the comment, it occurred to me that this “stuff” is only “dumb” in the context of ‘intelligence.' In other words, how hard is your brain working while you're running or sleeping?Chances are, not very hard. What if we viewed these behaviors not through an intelligence lens but through a wellness and health one?Eating right, exercising and getting enough sleep become fundamentals for a well-balanced life.A larger theme emerged…Change the lens - the filter - and answers or even behaviors and tools tend to change. While the episode is called “Dumb Stuff” (like so many episodes on H2G), it's really about paradigms.Paradigm defined:a typical example or pattern of something; a model.* (see behavior model below)a worldview underlying the theories and methodology of a particular scientific subject.Abraham Maslow, the famed American psychologist, called the inclination – the tendency to use the same tool for different problems – the ‘Law of the Instrument.'It refers to an over-reliance on a favorite or familiar tool. Here's the key point: Before anyone grabs any tool, they have a perception or view of the problem. It's less about the tool, at first, and more about the paradigm. Before any problem is solved, it must be addressed. How we view challenges, determines not only how we think about them, but how we approach them (our behaviors), and which tools we use.Maslow's ‘Law of the Instrument' tells us that an over-reliance on any particular view and/or tool can result in negative results rather than helpful ones.Different challenges that are addressed with the same worldview, behaviors and/or tool often equates to non-serving results. It's essential to first ask, what paradigm am I addressing this challenge with?Approaching challenges with an open mind clears the path for new paradigms – new ways of thinking. It's new ways of thinking that tend to result in new behaviors, habits and skills; even the use of new tools. (see behavior model below)Our paradigms lie at the heart of our behavior. These paradigms are fundamental to our problem-solving, psychology and our behaviors.Enjoy the show!~mg***Get the inspiring, free and world's first HABITS to GOALS tracking template here: → https://thehabitfactor.com/templates“The Three Circles of Behavior Echo-System” / The Grunburg Behavior Model is a holistic, fluid, and dynamic behavior-change model. Habits 2 Goals: The Habit Factor® Podcast with Martin Grunburg | Goal Achievement, Productivity & Success – Simplified

"Genius is the infinite capacity for taking pains." ~Thomas Carlyle Pain is something everyone can relate to. Pain hurts. Yet, what happens when we pursue a goal and along the way, encounter pain? Should we just quit? Another definition of pain is "careful effort; great care or trouble." Pain is often a requirement for growth and learning. And, pain is a key, leading indicator that one is on the path toward something meaningful and worthwhile. Hence, Carlyle's great quote above. Your goal may be getting more fit, or writing the next great novel. Rest assured, tremendous pain stands between you and the desired outcome! Strangely, it was a tweet that inspired this episode. The man behind the tweet insisted that it was a high tolerence for pain that keeps people stuck; in undesireable jobs, relationships, etc. The truth is, it's more likely the opposite. Chances are good that they believe making any change will be more painful than staying where they are. Unfortunately, the desire for stasis—to remain unchanged—in an ever-changing world, is unrealistic. Thus, the importance of becoming comfortable with change and the type of pain that is felt when one heads toward their most important goals and ideals. Habits 2 Goals: The Habit Factor® Podcast with Martin Grunburg | Goal Achievement, Productivity & Success – Simplified

"Is it really about what we go through, or is it about something else? I don't want to be the guy people look at and say, 'Wow, that poor guy, he's been through a lot.'" ~Ted Ryce In this special episode of H2G, MG welcomes fitness expert Ted Ryce. Ted, a long-time physical and personal transformation coach who used to work with a handful of celebrities in Miami, now fills his time traveling the world, running his personal transformation coaching business, and hosting his own very popular podcast, "The Legendary Life." A great Japanese proverb states, "Adversity is the foundation of virtue." Few will experience the tragic, life-altering challenges Ted Ryce had to endure. At the age of 19, his younger brother was kidnapped and murdered. Later, his mother would die in a tragic car accident, and his sister would commit suicide. While Ted shares some of his best fitness, health, and well-being advice, he also shares many powerful life lessons. Rather than breaking his will or character, Ted accepted the tragedies as circumstances beyond his control and decided he would put his time and attention upon those things he could control: working out, developing discipline, and mastering his mindset and character. The tragedies Ted endured sent him on a personal development journey that forced him to strengthen his mind and body. "My life story SUCKS! It kind of...really sucks...but I don't feel that bad...Why are people who don't have this shitty story feeling worse than me, and why are they struggling so much? Is it really about what we go through in life, or is it about something else?" "I don't want to be the guy people look at and say, 'Wow, that poor guy, he's been through a lot. We all have the power to change ourselves...to change how we feel, to get rid of our stresses..." Listen in to hear how Ted navigated his life's hardships and learn about the various mindsets and techniques he used to optimize his mind and body. Enjoy the episode! Habits 2 Goals: The Habit Factor® Podcast with Martin Grunburg | Goal Achievement, Productivity & Success – Simplified

"I'm not the smartest or dumbest person in the room, but I am the one that's willing to do whatever it takes to upgrade my mindset and my skill set, and I'm persistent as hell to achieve my goal, no matter what." John Assaraf In this special episode of Habits 2 Goals, John Assaraf—a two-time New York Times bestselling author and H2G's first two-time special guest—takes us deep into the essence of personal development by sharing his own breakthrough stories and strategies, as well as the latest developments in brain science as it relates to goal achievement. John and MG discuss the upcoming 9th annual Brain-A-Thon—a free event hosted by John Assaraf specifically designed to help people break through their own limiting beliefs. John was a below-average student who struggled mightily in school; he ultimately dropped out in 11th grade.  Fortunately, he was introduced to a successful real estate investor who became his mentor, sharing a multitude of "success" insights. "When you're interested in your goals, chances are they aren't going to materialize. However, when you're committed to your goals, your odds improve dramatically," Assaraf says. That was the first great lesson a young John Assaraf would receive from his millionaire mentor: be truly committed to your goals. “This mindset stuff really works!”  Later on, John invested in a REMAX real estate franchise for the state of Indiana and grew it from a single office to 85 branches with more than 1,200 sales associates. In total, under his leadership, they would achieve $4.5 billion in revenue. By upgrading his mindset, his skill-set, and his emotional tool set, John became remarkably more effective. "People are either pleased with their existing results, or they feel they can do and achieve more," Assaraf explains. "Within the delta often lies essential mindset shifts and key, new behavior patterns." The Brain-A-Thon provides many free, powerful tools and insights, shared by the world's top specialists in neuroscience and behavioral psychology. The event also includes many well-known experts who will be discussing various success principles. Participants will learn about shattering limiting beliefs and forging new mindsets that are congruent with their most important goals and ideals The proof is in the pudding; hence, this is the 9th annual Brain-A-Thon! Assaraf says, "I wanted this to be like the Jerry Lewis telethon, only with the mission to help as many as possible achieve a new level of understanding of how to harness their $100 billion computer and reach new levels of achievement!" [Note: As a follow-up to this episode, you're encouraged to learn more about John's backstory by listening to his first H2G interview here.] "Most of us have a brain worth $100 billion," Assaraf explains. "Science has invested more than that to recreate our brain and cannot come close. The question becomes, are you the best operator of your brain that you can be?" "In this day and age, there isn't any excuse for anyone who desires better results in any area of their life. It's all learnable for those who are truly committed!" Enjoy the episode! Habits 2 Goals: The Habit Factor® Podcast with Martin Grunburg | Goal Achievement, Productivity & Success – Simplified

"Unhappiness is tied to a feeling of not being in control. By establishing small wins each day you not only feel happier, you move you closer to your goals!" MG invites Jen back on H2G to discuss this week's Mind-Bullet, "Small Wins", a different spin on the importance of self-efficacy, the ability to produce a desired result. Coming off last weeks episode, "Intentionality" we know humans are goal-achievement machines. Thus, they must be setting goals. The key to bridging the gap, going from point "A" to point "B" is to compile small wins as often as possible along the way. This is precisely why tracking habits that are aligned with your goals is so effective. Each time you tick-off a habit, you feel as though you've inched closer to your goal and you demonstrate self-efficacy—the ability to produce a desired result! Thus, pilling up small wins provides a sense of purpose as well as a feeling of control. Two important aspects that influence your ongoing effectiveness and overall happiness! Enjoy the show! Habits 2 Goals: The Habit Factor® Podcast with Martin Grunburg | Goal Achievement, Productivity & Success – Simplified

"The man who moves mountains begins by carrying small stones.” ~Confucius Overwhelm by definition is to "bury or drown by a large mass". This is a topic we covered in Season 3, episode 10 when Martin invited Cathey Fisher to join H2G to share her experience with The Habit Factor and discuss the topic of being overwhelmed. Cathey and Martin review the Focus & Discipline webinar where the topic came up in the Q&A. In this episode, MG dishes out a five-part recipe regarding exactly how to address the feeling of overwhelm which begins with getting crystal clear on identifying the PRIORITY— what to address first. Loosely defined, a priority is one thing of great importance above all others.  Listen in to hear the other four, key steps in the process to  make feeling overwhelmed a thing of the past. Habits 2 Goals: The Habit Factor® Podcast with Martin Grunburg | Goal Achievement, Productivity & Success – Simplified

"Give yourself physical challenges and they will create mental breakthroughs!"  Last week we introduced MG’s latest “challenge and change” experiment, merging the metaphorical and literal concepts of climbing and understanding the endurance and strength that climbing brings. In this episode, we recap his adventures conquering the R2R2R Challenge from June 30-July 1, sharing lessons learned along with a few tales from this experience alongside a group of Ironman/entrepreneurs. Concepts from The Pressure Paradox dominated this challenge, highlighting the importance of the 3 P’s: Plan, Prepare and Practice. After all, the higher the stakes, the greater the importance of planning, preparing and practicing -- and these stakes were high! Except sometimes we throw ourselves a curveball during a challenge: MG never foresaw the possibility that he’d be trail running at least the first half of each day, but that’s exactly what he decided to do when a small fraction of the group took off at 4:45 a.m. in the early dawn — the goal was to get through the valley of the Grand Canyon as quickly as possible and beat the heat It was a gamble that paid off on day one: 25-plus miles of running/hiking, and a quick 9 hours later the South-to-North Rim was finished! Unfortunately, that same gamble on day two didn’t yield the same dividends: With about 12 miles left, two massive blisters formed on each of the balls of his feet. Among the incredible individuals he shared this trail-running experience with was author and elite, competitive Ironman Shay Eskew. While the entire group was a great inspiration to MG, Shay’s story was profoundly transformative, overcoming unimaginable tragedy to create a life lived to the fullest. (Check out his book, “What the Fire Ignited,” and stay tuned for a future H2G interview in Season 6!) Finally, another reminder from The Pressure Paradox: For us to experience our own mental and physical breakthroughs, we almost always must pass through our own sort of “Crucible," which, interestingly, is exactly the formula the Marines use to transform recruits into MARINES! (Note: Actual mileage Marines hike during this challenge is 54, not 25.) Listen in to hear more about the R2R2R challenge and the importance of consistently setting physical challenges that push your limits -- ones that are sure to create mental breakthroughs.
