In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, brought to you by LMNT, we are joined by Tate Dobson, known on trail as Pyro. Tate is a certified wildcard. It's not just that he's hiked the PCT, AT, Long Trail, and Te Araroa, but how he's done it, including hiking the Appalachian Trail and Long Trail spending $1,000 (alongside Quadzilla), hiking long stretches with carrying a Jansport pack, another stretch using tote bag, hiking the R2R2R eating only Motts Fruit snacks and the 100-Mile Wilderness consuming only maple syrup and a jar of peanut butter. He's run a pair of ultramarathons around a roundabout, he's run a beer mile with his mom, and has accomplished another mile consuming four shots of tequila and a tube of toothpaste. In other words, strap in. We wrap the show with some bucket list hikes you can do over a long weekend, the triple crown of stuipd word spellings, a listener poop story, and more. You might have heard of Rim to Rim, a hike that traverses the Grand Canyon, which is a bucket list hike for sure. But did you know that you can add another Rim on there, and head back to the start? Three IRLAG teammates- Nicole Rambsey, Lindsay Long, and Cheryl Kreinbring- planned and trained for months to attempt this epic R2R2R in one single day. The Rim to Rim to Rim is a 40-48 mile hike that has about 11,000 feet of elevation gain and 11,000 feet elevation loss. It is a self-supported adventure that many people do as a multi-day hike. But Cheryl, Lindsay, and Nicole decided to attempt this epic hike in one single day. In this episode we cover it all, from whose idea it was, to preparation, to equipment and nutrition, to the actual 24+ hours of hiking while completing the R2R2R challenge. The Rim to Rim to Rim (R2R2R) is an iconic and challenging trek in the Grand Canyon National Park. As the name suggests, it involves traveling from one rim of the canyon to the other and then back again, covering a round trip that spans the width of the canyon twice. Typically, participants start either from the North Rim or the South Rim, descend to the canyon floor via one of the trails (such as the Bright Angel Trail or the South Kaibab Trail), traverse the canyon bottom, and then ascend to the opposite rim using another trail. They then turn around and repeat the journey in reverse, returning to their starting point. The R2R2R is extremely strenuous and requires careful planning, preparation, and fitness due to its significant elevation changes, rugged terrain, and exposure to extreme weather conditions. This past weekend, I completed this adventure. Arnie Fonseca Jr. is training to become the oldest person to ever complete a quadruple crossing of the Grand Canyon—R2R2R2R2R—which he soon plans on doing at the age of 65. A big part of his training regiment is completing multiple Rim-to-Rim-to-Rims, the first of which he took on this past week. But the thing is, it's currently winter, and completing an R3 is VERY difficult in such conditions, because of snow and ice and the closure of the North Rim for the season. In spite of all his Canyon experience, Arnie faced some unexpected challenges, and hearing about how he dealt with them is something that will help all of us on our Canyon adventures. ***** To reach Coach Arnie, he insists you can call or text him at (602) 390-9144, or find him (@ArnieFonsecaJr) on Facebook, Instagram, or LinkedIn. ***** For Canyon-centric hoodies, sweatshirts & tees—including the Victor Vomit tee and our new Rim-to-Rim collection— please visit BrightAngelOutfitters.com ******* For more great Grand Canyon content, please check us out on the following platforms: YouTube (@GrandCanyonHikerDude) for informative and inspirational videos Instagram (@GrandCanyonHikerDude) for photos from the trail TikTok (@GrandCanyonHikerDude) for fun and informative short-form videos Facebook (@GrandCanyonHikerDude) ******* For the best and most helpful Facebook groups dedicated to hiking the Grand Canyon, search for: Grand Canyon Hikers Grand Canyon Rim to Rim Grand Canyon R2R2R Run! By Davy Crockett This part will cover additional stories found through deeper research, adding to the history shared in found in the new book, Grand Canyon Rim to Rim History. Grand Canyon rim to rim hikes and runs become very popular as thousands descend into the Canyon each year. Fastest known times for R2R and R2R2R runs are broken. In 1991, Jerry Chavez, a Vietnam veteran of Leadville, Colorado, worked for the NPS. He operated the pump station at Indian Garden, which pumped water up to the South Rim. He lived year-round at a nice residence down at Indian Garden. Chavez was also a member of the park's 20-member rescue team and kept in shape by running rim-to-rim. Chavez said that the “dumbest thing” he saw was people hiking without food or water. “Chavez had seen a lot of weird things in the Canyon, including a guy hiking in a dusty tuxedo and women in high-heel shoes.” Often, he would rescue hikers suffering from heatstroke. One recent case was particularly bad. He remembered, “When I saw that man, he looked like death. We had to carry him up a mile. His temperature was 109. We were running water from a creek and kept pouring it on him. When they flew him to Flagstaff, he still had a temperature of 105. The doctor called and said whoever worked on him saved his life. The guy walked out of the hospital as normal as can be.” Chavez was awarded a National Park Service achievement award. Out-of-shape parents were often seen bringing down small children. On a winter day in 1989, Chavez was out for a run and found parents with two small children and heavy packs. “The kids were lying in the snow and crying. I told them, ‘You're going to have to carry those kids out.'” He offered to help, but the father refused and yelled at the kids about 2-3 years old. Finally, Chavez got permission to rescue the kids and carry them out. Amphitheater High School Double Cross During the summer of 1991, cross-country runner Virginia Hope Pedersoli (1974-) and others from Amphitheater High School in Tucson, Arizona, achieved a double-crossing giving publicity to the feat to other high schools. The group went down South Kaibab at dawn and reached the North Rim in ten hours. They ate lunch and headed back, finishing in the early morning at about 3 a.m. for a 21.5-hour double cross. Pedersoli said, “It was awesome. Walk until you are dead and then walk some more. It's hard to explain. While I was doing it, I wanted to quit, but after I was done, I wanted to do it again.” She went on to win five state championships in track and cross-country and competed in track and cross-country at the University of Arizona. President Bush on South Kaibab Trail On September 18, 1991, South Kaibab Trail was totally shut down with federal agents crawling around it with rifles and large binoculars. President George H. W. Bush (1924-2018), visited the Canyon and descended down the trail with a group that included Interior Secretary Manuel Lujan (1928-2019). The president wore loafers that became coated with dust and sweat drenched the back of his shirt. He chatted quite a bit about the views and the fishing in the Colorado River and at Phantom Ranch. He really wanted to get to the bottom, but they turned around after going down 685 feet to Ooh Ahh Point. After they turned around, Bush left most of his group behind and powered up the trail. His hike lasted about an hour and covered 1.8 miles. Major Destruction of the Kaibab Trail in 1992 During February 1992, a major rockslide destroyed a large portion of the North Kaibab Trail between Supai Tunnel and the bridge across the ravine below. It took out nearly 9,000 feet of switchbacks. The slopes had been soaked by early winter rains, became very muddy, and then crashed down into the canyon. Bruce Aiken at Roaring Springs reported, “Rebuilding the trail is going to be very difficult. It will take at least two months, maybe longer.” Hikers were given directions to use the Old Br...

Cale came to running as he signed up for his first sprint triathlon in 2011. He hated running and only ran when it involved team sports. It took several years to enjoy running as he often worked only on speed and trying to be faster. This often resulted in nagging injuries that curtailed his running. This cycle repeated itself until becoming selected for season 11 of Becoming Ultra. Learning the reasons behind different types of runs was critical. It allowed him to keep running and build up strength and stamina. He is a father of two boys Colin age 17 and Ian 15. Cale and Meghan will be celebrating 20 years of marriage on July 6th, 2022. Being able to share their long runs together is a big part of their relationship and helps them get out and enjoy Central Oregon and all its beautiful surroundings. Cale is passionate about developing leaders outside of running. He has two companies that he runs-Crestcom which is a leadership development franchise and B2B Transportation which is a full-service freight brokerage. He has coached youth basketball since 2011 and loves the game. Meghan picked up running when her kids were young. She would put them in the jogger, give them their snacks and drinks and hit the road! She has always been active and often attended group fitness classes prior to picking up running. She is an amazing wife and mother to two boys aged 15 and 17. She has a magnet on her fridge that she lives by."I create peacefullness in my mind, and my body reflects this peacefullness as perfect health." She enjoys cooking and helping her family lead a healthy lifestyle. She has been a nurse her whole life and currently works in ICU . She applied to Season 9 of Becoming Ultra and was not selected. It turned out to be a great thing because Cale and her both applied to Season 11 and were selected to run their first Ultra at Desert Rats 50k in April of this year. She finished her first Ultra in just over 7 hours. She loved it so much she signed up for season 12's event to cheer and support them in their journey to complete their first Ultra. She recently set a PR in a road half of 1:51:47 and beat Cale who also PRed at 1:53:46. She is sneaky fast when she wants to be. She will tell you she is not competitive but every now and then it comes out and she starts taking souls out on the course! Meghan and Cale recently completed R2R and are looking at when they will do R2R2R or R3. They are signed up for Jacks 50K race in Florida and look forward to supporting season 12 runners on their inaugural 50k. We had such a great time catching up with our friends Cale and Meghan. They are another awesome couple we met through the Becoming Ultra Community who share the love of trail running together. We talk about their ultra-journey and the impact it has had on both their family life and careers. Cale talks about how his job stress was the catalyst for a life change. I was personally so inspired by this. Cale and Meghan have a very supportive relationship. Hearing them talk about how they balance everything will make you feel empowered. Meghan also shares how she keeps peacefulness in her life. This one will leave you feeling encouraged and motivated.

Steve started running ultras after he completed an Ironman and realized that triathlons were not for him. After moving to Vancouver, he had nothing but mountains to explore and that's what he did. After reading books like Ultramarathon Man, Born To Run, and Eat & Run he became fascinated with Ultras and was inspired to complete R2R2R. We chat with Steve about his journey to Western States 100 with his tickets races being Black Canyon 3xs, Tunnel Hill and BigHorn 100. Here is Steve... This week Clint and Dawson talk with Skyler Baker. Skyler was born and raised on Signal Mountain Tennessee and since he was a child he was immersed in the outdoor community and music scene of the Chattanooga area. Every spring and fall his family camped in a pop up trailer in the surrounding state parks. As a teenager that developed into hiking with friends and doing short overnight trips around Walden's Ridge. His senior project included work with the Cumberland Trail Conference before setting off for the college of engineering at UT Knoxville. In his second year at UT he went on a whim of a day hike in the Smokies which sparked a love. In my third year he was invited to spend spring break backpacking on Cumberland Island, his first multiple night trip. While working a summer internship in Chattanooga he began to trail run every day after work. Once he graduated that became his hobby and it further developed in the Smokies. His approach to travel also changed as he took trips to South Africa, the Alps, Canada, and Alaska. After running a few ultra marathons he ticked off new trails in the Smokies one by one, eventually completing all of them in July 2020. Following the Smokies 900 he looked for new goals including the SCAR, R2R2R, the Art Loeb Trail, and he even got into gravel biking. Nothing was filling the void so he set his sights on the Pacific Crest Trail in April 2021. After completing the trail he spent a month seeing the National Parks before returning to Tennessee. Skyler shares his PCT experience with us and a few other stories from his adventures. Thanks for listening! Find all our episodes at dayfirepodcast.com This podcast is powered by ZenCast.fm

In this episode of She Runs Trails, I interview @vanelaintrepida.
It's been a while since I published an episode. There's a reason for that. I've been busy developing a new podcast. The Retired Teacher Coach Podcast debuted in the last week of 2021. It's based on my coaching practice. My elevator pitch for my coaching goes as follows:I help retired educators make awesome health and lifestyle choices. While my niche is retired educators, I work with clients that are not educators and clients who are not retired. Each episode of my new show follows a template similar to the Hacking Engagement Podcast. I'll identify a problem and offer solutions. Please don't worry about the Hacking Engagement Podcast. It's not ending. There'll be more episodes in the future. But for today I wanted to share an episode of my new podcast. This episode has been very well received and I'll wager that it'll inspire you regardless of your age or your occupation status. If you like what you hear, please subscribe to The Retired Teacher Coach Podcast on Apple, Google, or Spotify.
Our Co-Founder and our Director of Community Partnerships gives us the scoop - - - PB: "Races are resuming so FKTs are coming in at a more manageable rate. The UK has a very strong tradition so a lot of action there, including in winter. Australia is active as well." AM: "It's been an amazing year! We forget that Rob Krar and Mike Foote did R2R2R.alt almost a year ago. Then Stringbean beat the AZT by 3 days after temporarily quitting due to snow." FKTs are now a standard part of the sport. The term is used all over the world, the same in every language, pro runners go for FKTs like they would a race, and we all can participate ourselves. PB: "You can - and should - find what is meaningful to you." AM: "I love FKTs! I met my husband doing them, and am continually amazed and what people come up with." Their advice? PB: "Learning and growing is fun. That's probably how I got into this." AM: "Do your homework." It's time for year-end gifts. Consider us! There was no advertising on this podcast - we rely on YOU. On October 18, Drew ran back and forth across the Grand Canyon 4 times (R2R2R2R2R). It was his third try, so he learned some things! Which he shares with you ... "They start turning off the water when the weather gets cold. So there's a narrow window when most people try this. I did the first R2R2R at night, so the warm sun made starting the second lap easier." This route was 83 miles, with 22,000' of vert. And unlike running in the mountains, to finish it off, you have to run almost 5,000' back UP! "Your quads must be preserved. The "box" is good running, so you'll lose big chunks of time if you're already beat up by then." Drew loves the Grand Canyon, and it shows. Even though it's not always easy, as he describes one trail in the western section: "You can hardly see the trail. My lower legs were shredded. If I were to do that route again, I'd put KT Tape all over my shins in advance." This Episode Sponsored by Rabbit: The free-spirited California brand dedicated to all things running. #125 - R2R2R or R3 is running the Grand Canyon rim to rim to rim, usually starting at the South Rim to the North Rim and back to the South. Although it can be started at the North as well. I discovered Pete Peterson through a video he posted of his R3 in a running group and after looking at more of his videos, I wanted to have him on the show. His story is familial yet fascinating and will definitely inspire you to get out and create your own running adventure! For this exciting lady-centric Trail Mix episode, Kelsey and Jenna gush over the legendary Grandma Gatewood, who decided to go walking one day on the Appalacian Trail and then ended up in the AT Hall of Fame, walking the whole Oregon Trail itself, and being an overall hiking trail hero in her keds sneakers! And then gush about Suzanne Stroeer, Lexi Miller, and Christin Douglas who in the last year completed the R2R2R trail in the Grand Canyon! They took on the trickiest rim-to-rim challenge in under a day and basically crushed. Ryan Beckett is my guest on this podcast. Ryan is a friend of mine, a successful local Florida Realtor and Brokerage owner. To say he's an adventure seeker is an understatement. He's accomplished some pretty cool things to this point in his life. Ryan believes you don't really grow as a human unless you take yourself out of your comfort zone and he's definitely done that multiple times in his short life. From Triathlons, and Ironman competitions to biking from Florida to California for charity to sailing from New York to Florida, not to mention climbing Mt. Everest to the base camp. His accomplishments are inspiring to say the least. Some of you may remember Ryan from his two seasons on ABC's Bachelorette in 2015 or Bachelor in Paradise in 2016. Our conversation centers around his latest adventure, which is tackling the Rim to Rim to Rim in the Grand Canyon. It's a 48-mile trek over rough terrain with varying altitudes and weather. This is a two-part podcast. I spoke to Ryan prior to him leaving for Colorado in late April and then again this past week after he had been home and rested up. I hope this inspires you to take yourself out of your comfort zone. You never know what you can accomplish unless you try. Whether you succeed or fail it's all about the journey and the experience. Dr. Teddy Bross has finished seven 100 mile races (and 12 of the Nolan's 14 summits :-), and is a physician. Host Hillary Allen asks him for his best advice to manage your long projects in the winter. "The R2R2R.alt is probably too short a swim to develop hypothermia, but is a perfect scenario for 'cold shock'." Teddy confirms Rob Krar's theory (previous week's podcast), that rather than taking the time to change in and out of a wetsuit, it was more important to get warm immediately once out of the water by putting on an insulated puffy jacket and getting moving. "Moving your body by immediately moving is great. But it is depleting glycogen stores, so dehydration and bonking cannot be overlooked." People die from hypothermia. Listen to Dr. Bross's advice so you're not one of them!
Rob and Mike not only did a great route in fine style, but their photo went big in the FKT world. (It should be on the cover of Outside Magazine!) R2R2R.alt runs across the Grand Canyon, with the same distance and elevation profile as the very popular (overpopulated?) Rim to River to Rim to River to Rim route. Big difference: there is no bridge across the river - have to swim! Join co-host Hillary Allen in hearing more memorable thoughts from Krar and Foote. Sometimes planning an adventure is almost has exciting as actually adventuring, and on some adventures things go sideways and still offer the best memories and a thirst for more. This is the story of Steph Decker who almost spontaneously invited Calvin Kuo and Freddie Most to an attempt of the fabled and rarely travelled R2R2R alt route down into the Grand Canyon and back. And yes, the alt route is the one without the bridge over the river, so as swimming across is the only option.
Four short highlights from Season One you may have missed or need to hear again. The best 10 minutes from each! Episode 1: Tony Krupicka on the Longs Peak Duathlon (our most listened-to podcast ever). Free-soloing is all about "how you feel". "Sometimes being successful means just getting back to the car. Alive.” Episode 2: Karel Sabbe crushes the FKT on the Appalachian Trail. How did he beat the best ultra-runners in the country by FOUR DAYS? "I learned it was far better to start very early and get the miles done, rather than struggle in late and tired." Episode 10: Heather Anderson is the first women to do the Calendar Triple Crown of Hiking. She once held the Overall Self-Supported FKTs for the AT, the PCT, and the Arizona Trail, simultaneously. "I wanted to relinquish control, let go and let it unfold. It was an area of growth for me.” Episode 13: Jim Walmsley and two friends swim across the Colorado River. The R2R2R.alt has become epic for combining adventure and beauty. "It's really aesthetic, because the Bass is the only trail other than the Kaibab that goes completely from one Rim to the other, with the only catch being, there is no bridge across the River..." This Episode is a tight 45 minutes of the best advice from the best FKTers.

What do you need to release and remove from your life today?
By Davy Crockett For both ultrarunners and hikers, the Grand Canyon is considered by most, one of the greatest destinations to experience. Thousands make their pilgrimages each year to experience the joy of journeying across the Canyon's great expanse, rim-to-rim (R2R). Crossing the Canyon and returning back is an activity that has taken place for more than 125 years. Native Americans crossed the Canyon centuries earlier. During the spring and fall, each day people cross the famous canyon and many of them, return the same day, experiencing what has been called for decades as a “double crossing,” and in more recent years, a "rim-to-rim-to-rim" (R2R2R). Anyone who descends into the Canyon should take some time learning about the history of the trails they use. This article tells the story of many of these early crossings and includes the creation of the trails, bridges, Phantom Ranch, and the water pipeline, the things you will see along your journey. Hopefully this will help you to have a deeper respect for the Canyon and those who helped make it available for us to enjoy. Grand Canyon Today - note the dates Introduction Today if you hike or run across the Grand Canyon you have choices. You can start from the South Rim or from the North Rim. A South start is more common. On the South side, you can use either the Bright Angel Trail from Grand Canyon Village, or the South Kaibab Trail that starts a few miles to the east, using a shuttle to Yaki Point. On the North side, the North Kaibab Trail is used. These are the main trails into the Grand Canyon and referred to as the "Corridor Trails," used by the masses and mule trains. Today, there are two bridges along the Corridor to cross the Colorado River, Black Bridge or Silver Bridge. When this history story starts abut 1890, there was no Grand Canyon Village, no Phantom Ranch at the bottom, and these trails did not exist. There were few visitors to either Rim because they lacked roads and there were no automobiles yet. Early miners used many places to descend. This article will concentrate on the corridor region near Grand Canyon Village where most modern crossings are taking place. Creation of Bright Angel Trail (South Side) South Rim about 1890 The upper part of Bright Angel Trail, coming down from the South Rim, was originally a route used by the Havasupai to access what became known as Indian Garden, halfway down the Canyon, about 3,000 feet below. In 1887, Ralph Cameron (1863-1953), future US senator of Arizona, prospected and believed he found copper and gold near Indian Garden. He said, "At that time my only purpose in building the trail was to use it in pursuing mining operations." Peter Berry Work began on December 24, 1890 and it would take 12 years to complete. In 1891 Peter D. Berry, (1856-1932), longtime friend of Cameron succeeded in obtaining rights for the trail, including rights to collect tolls which were not collected until 1901. Berry had also helped engineer the Grandview Trail (Berry Trail) further east. Other trails were being used. Hardy tourists were descending down to the Colorado River using the Bass Trail far to the west. By the end of 1891, after spending $500, and two months of labor, a very rough trail existed that descended the Bright Angel fault to Indian Garden. The trail's name John Hance Originally called the "Cameron Trail", by 1892 the trail was also named “Bright Angel Trail.” It would cost about $100,000 and 12 years to fully build, and at its height was worked on by 100 men. How did the trail get its name? This is a subject of entertaining legend and folklore. One story was told by "Captain" John Hance (1840-1919) who came to live at the Canyon about 1883. He was famous for his stories and yarns about the canyon. He said that a beautiful girl who the men thought looked like an angel came to stay at the Canyon and would descend often down the trail. One day she never came back up,

Peter Bakwin (Episode 65) and Andrew Skurka (Episode 26) discuss what inspired them this year. "One issue with this FKT, is that it's not a well-known Route by a well-known person, so some Voters may not understand how incredibly hard it is - the numbers do not describe this." The next Podcast will reveal the #5, #4, and #3 FKTs of 2019. One thing for sure - they won't be the same-old Routes by the same people! The first three years of FKTOY Awards saw the John Muir Trail, Nolans 14, and R2R2R win 3 Awards and the Appalachian Trail 2 - in 2019, these four towering Routes are not even on the Nominations List! Matt Comer has always been competitive but wasn’t always a runner… in fact, much like my own story, he couldn’t run a mile until the early 2000s when he picked up running as a way to lose weight and get back into competitive sports. As I’ve mentioned in a couple of prior episodes, my husband and I are avid Orangetheory-ers. That’s where we met Matt Comer about a year and a half ago. He’s broken pretty much every rowing record at our studio and is consistently one of the top rowers in the entire country. He’s also one of those guys that makes running at 12mph at incline look easy. But I didn’t know the extent of his athletic journey until we had this conversation today. We talk about how Matt dreamed up this crazy idea of running across the Grand Canyon and back (as if running it once isn’t enough) and how he and 2 of his closest friends are joining him for this feat. While it may seem like a simple enough goal - there is a LOT that goes into preparing for something like a 50-odd mile run with 20,000 feet of elevation change. So in this episode, we do something a little different. Matt hasn’t completed his goal just yet - the date is April 25th - but we talk ALL of the details and how he’s preparing both physically and mentally for this crazy challenge. We’ll catch up with Matt again after he’s actually completed the run across the Grand Canyon and back to hear how it unfolded.
Josh has run in 13 different countries in a single day, and run a 5k in all 50 states in 6 days! Like the Jared Campbell Episode 61, Josh is a spreadsheet maestro. "The elite talent I lack can be made up for in logistical planning." Josh lives in Michigan and sets FKTs in the western mountains - Midwesterners take note - you can do this! "R2R2R.alt has the same elevation profile as the over-crowded R2R2R, but besides being much more remote and thin, requires you swim the Colorado River. If you mess up, you'll really mess up" "Yeah, you'll drown." Josh tried it twice in November! With an incredible story each time, you really should listen to this. "We sang along to a Ziggy Marly tribute video, ate frozen bananas and drank whiskey until 5am." "Give yourself physical challenges and they will create mental breakthroughs!" Last week we introduced MG’s latest “challenge and change” experiment, merging the metaphorical and literal concepts of climbing and understanding the endurance and strength that climbing brings. In this episode, we recap his adventures conquering the R2R2R Challenge from June 30-July 1, sharing lessons learned along with a few tales from this experience alongside a group of Ironman/entrepreneurs. Concepts from The Pressure Paradox dominated this challenge, highlighting the importance of the 3 P’s: Plan, Prepare and Practice. After all, the higher the stakes, the greater the importance of planning, preparing and practicing -- and these stakes were high! Except sometimes we throw ourselves a curveball during a challenge: MG never foresaw the possibility that he’d be trail running at least the first half of each day, but that’s exactly what he decided to do when a small fraction of the group took off at 4:45 a.m. in the early dawn — the goal was to get through the valley of the Grand Canyon as quickly as possible and beat the heat It was a gamble that paid off on day one: 25-plus miles of running/hiking, and a quick 9 hours later the South-to-North Rim was finished! Unfortunately, that same gamble on day two didn’t yield the same dividends: With about 12 miles left, two massive blisters formed on each of the balls of his feet. Among the incredible individuals he shared this trail-running experience with was author and elite, competitive Ironman Shay Eskew. While the entire group was a great inspiration to MG, Shay’s story was profoundly transformative, overcoming unimaginable tragedy to create a life lived to the fullest. (Check out his book, “What the Fire Ignited,” and stay tuned for a future H2G interview in Season 6!) Finally, another reminder from The Pressure Paradox: For us to experience our own mental and physical breakthroughs, we almost always must pass through our own sort of “Crucible," which, interestingly, is exactly the formula the Marines use to transform recruits into MARINES! (Note: Actual mileage Marines hike during this challenge is 54, not 25.) Listen in to hear more about the R2R2R challenge and the importance of consistently setting physical challenges that push your limits -- ones that are sure to create mental breakthroughs. On this episode of Le Run Down, I'm excited to share a conversation with Ultra Triathlon couple, Katherine and Kevin Becker. Their journey in fitness began a little later than most, but it’s been incredibly eventful. They started with team sprint triathlon, but now they've completed multiple Ironmans, 4 marathon world majors, crossed the grand canyon, and hold the Guinness World Record for most completed Ultraman races by a married couple. Their goal has always been to race for fun and fitness, and they've shown that anything is possible, if you set an objective and put your mind to it. Jim Walmsley is one of the best ultrarunners in the world, who a few days ago (12/10/2018), with Tim Freriks and Eric Senseman, set a new FKT on the dramatic and adventurous "R2R2R.alt" in the Grand Canyon. "It's really aesthetic, because the Bass is the only trail other than the Kaibab that goes completely from one Rim to the other, with the only catch being, there is no bridge across the River..." Jim describes their preparation, the size and scope of the Grand Canyon, a scouting trip (“we just stood and looked at the River for 30 minutes”), and finally, what it's like to swim across the Colorado River: "I just took off and swam across … my idea was I wanted to set the tone … we're here to do it, we're not here to chicken out."
The Grand Canyon Rim to Rim to Rim (R2R2R) has historically been a place for ultra runners to test their skills and endurance against the best in the world and a beautiful and challenging location for a long unsupported run. It's a classic Fastest Known Time (FKT) Route and the Canyon is a place of unparalleled beauty. The route is approximately 42 miles from South Kaibab Trail to North Kaibab Trail and back to South Kaibab with almost 11,000 ft of climbing. The long descents and ascents have beaten many a runner into a "death march" aka walking the final miles and the extreme heat and cold (depending on the time of year) can also take their toll. In this episode we hear stories from the current women's record holder, Taylor Nowlin, as well as a man who set an OKT (only known time) for a QUADRUPLE (or 8x R2R) for a total of 168 miles in one go, Christof Teuscher. Stories also from Sandi Nypaver and previous record holder Cat Bradley (a Western States 100 mile Champion). Cover photo by Nico Barraza. Music by Summer Heart.

This is a "girl-crush" episode! When you can't be somebody, you want to be like somebody and I want to be like Mallory Brooks. Mallory and her husband, Jason, are the owners of Spectrum Trail Racing, she's a Rogue Running Trail Coach, she's the Race Director of the Rogue Trail Series, and, oh yeah, she's also the Mom to her son, Paxton. She's also a BEAST on the trail and, in fact, last year, she and her friend Allison Macsus earned the FKT (Fastest Known Time) on the 93-Mile Wonderland Trail that circumvents Mt. Rainier. She also recently completed a sub-12:00hr Rim-2-Rim-2-Rim Crossing in the Grand Canyon. In this episode, she details both her Rim-2-Rim-2-Rim and Wonderland adventures. Learn what drives her, how she developed her love of trail running and why she loves coaching beginners in the sport. It's truly a sport for everyone because, let's face it, who doesn't love playing in the woods? Enjoy!
