THIS IS A PREVIEW PODCAST. NOT THE FULL REVIEW. Please check out the full podcast review on our Patreon Page by subscribing over at - https://www.patreon.com/NextBestPicture Our 2009 retrospective has come to an end with our final review, that year's Best Picture Oscar winner, Kathryn Bigelow's "The Hurt Locker" starring Jeremy Renner, Anthony Mackie, Brian Geraghty, Evangeline Lilly, Ralph Fiennes, David Morse & Guy Pearce. The film received a massive wave of critical support after its long film festival run, which led to industry recognition, a historic Best Director win for Bigelow, making her the first female winner of the category, and Best Picture itself. The film follows an Iraq War Explosive Ordnance Disposal team who are targeted by insurgents and shows their psychological reactions to the stress of combat. Oscar-winning screenwriter Marc Boal drew on his experience during embedded access to write the screenplay. How does it hold up 16 years later? Please join Lauren LaMagna, Dan Bayer, Alyssa Christian, Giovanni Lago, and me as we discuss the performances, direction, writing, craftsmanship, its awards season run, and more in our SPOILER-FILLED review. You can view the winners of the 2009 NBP Film Community Awards here, and we'll announce our internal winners next week. Thank you so much for your support through this entire retrospective. Please check out our past reviews for "Crazy Heart," "The Blind Side," "A Serious Man," "An Education," "Up," "Inglourious Basterds," "District 9," "Star Trek," "Precious," "Up In The Air," and "The Secret In Their Eyes." It's a full-on pop culture party this week as Kyle McMahon talks the best and worst video game adaptiations with Benny Panella, Dave Franco & Alison Brie discuss their horror film Together and Anthony Mackie and the cast of Twisted Metal Season 2 takeover the show.Kyle is joined once again by the amazing Benny Panella to deep-dive, nitpick and laugh their way through the wild, pixelated world of video game adaptations. From Super Mario Bros. (1993, aka the one of the weirdest movies ever made) to The Last of Us and Sonic the Hedgehog dominating modern screens, they unpack what works, what flops, and why Hollywood keeps trying to make “Doom” happen (it's not going to happen). Then buckle up, because I'm bringing you inside the mayhem of Twisted Metal Season 2 with exclusive interviews from the cast and creatives - including the always epic Anthony Mackie and Stephanie Beatriz, showrunner Michael Jonathan Smith, Samoa Joe, Mike Mitchell, Tiana Okoye, Patti Guggenheim, Sailor Bell Curda, Lisa Gilroy, and Richard De Klerk. It's like Mad Max chugged five Monster Energy drinks and landed on Peacock. And to close things out? A real-life couple making fake-life horror magic - Dave Franco and Alison Brie join to talk about their twisted new film Together. They talk codependency, prosthetics, toilet logistics, and cuddling red flags. It's a lot. In the best way.
It's time to get....loud...Appropriate that on this episode we're going a little high octane with the three episode premiere of 'Twisted Metal: Season 2' which is now streaming on Paramount Plus.Following the dramatic events that ended season one, our heroes John Doe (Anthony Mackie) and Quiet (Stephanie Beatriz) find themselves entering the deadly 'Twisted Metal' tournament; a savage demolition derby hosted by the mysterious Calypso. As our duo faces some new foes and familiar faces things get complicated for John when his long lost sister reenters the equation. It's hard to believe but things get bigger, bolder and even more smashy in Season 2. We got the pleasure of sitting down with the one and only Stephanie Beatriz to talk about coming back for more, the fun in the chaos of it all, getting a little break from the dudefest that was Season 1 and so very much more....'Twisted Metal' will see new episodes of Season 2 dropping every week alongside Season 1 on Paramount Plus here in Canada so there's no excuse to not catch up on the fun.

Pain & Gain is Michael Bay's magnum opus, a razor-sharp dissection of the American id. This movie has it all: Con artistry, prosperity gospel, and drugs, drugs, drugs! It also features career-best performances of Dwayne Johnson, Mark Wahlberg, and Anthony Mackie, and it's easily Bay's best movie. Indeed, it's a look at an alternate career for Johnson where he could play interesting, complicated, vulnerable characters like he does in this movie. Instead, he made a bunch of movies with big cars and/or gorillas. Still, Pain & Gain is an absolute blast and we had a great time breaking it down, marveling at how much fun it is and how well it predicted what America would feel like in 2025. Next week: Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (2017) The Summer of Rock is our summer 2025 miniseries covering the movie career of Dwayne Johnson through nine movies, presented in chronological order. Starting with his attempt at crossing over from the world of wrestling, The Rock's career got off to a bumpy start before finally taking off in the 2010s. But it wasn't long before the bumps returned, and we'll be telling the story for you all summer long! A thirteen year old film, that has been derisively described as poverty porn, is our chosen film this month. Featuring an excellent supporting performance from Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson and a cameo role by Anthony Mackie, "The Inevitable Defeat of Mister and Pete is actually carried on the shoulders of two young actors who are on screen for nearly every scene in the story. Nicole Ayers of the "Mad Lab Post" championed the film and hosted the show. We lost one of our regular guests to illness but a super hero appeared at the last minute to join us and Howard Casner of "Pop Art" adds his insight to the discussion.
Send us a textThe Marvel Cinematic Universe stands at a crossroads, and Captain America: Brave New World perfectly embodies this uncertain moment. What happens when sidekicks become heroes, and their sidekicks become new sidekicks? How does a franchise maintain momentum after its defining narrative conclusion?Sam Wilson's journey from Falcon to Captain America should feel triumphant, but instead reveals deeper issues within the MCU's current direction. The film attempts to resurrect storylines from The Incredible Hulk (2008), finally acknowledges the celestial from Eternals, and introduces adamantium as a bridge to the X-Men universe—yet these connections feel more like obligation than inspiration. While Anthony Mackie brings charisma and conviction to his role, and the action sequences showcase his unique fighting style effectively, the political thriller elements don't reach the heights established by Winter Soldier. President Thaddeus Ross (now played by Harrison Ford) and the return of The Leader as antagonists create intriguing dynamics, but the stakes never feel as consequential as the film wants us to believe. This episode dives deep into what works and what doesn't in Brave New World, while exploring the broader question of MCU fatigue. Have we reached a point where even the most devoted fans are becoming disenchanted? Is there a path forward that recaptures the magic that made these interconnected stories feel special rather than obligatory? We also compare Marvel's approach to continuity with Star Wars', examining how different creative structures lead to different storytelling outcomes. The MCU's "Marvel Parliament" versus Lucasfilm's Story Group reveals fascinating contrasts in how franchises maintain coherence across multiple projects.Whether you're still fully invested in the MCU or feeling the fatigue, this conversation offers fresh perspectives on where superhero storytelling might go from here. Is it time for Marvel to take a break and recalibrate, or push forward into bold new territory?Twitter handles:Project Geekology: https://twitter.com/pgeekologyAnthony's Twitter: https://twitter.com/odysseyswowDakota's Twitter: https://twitter.com/geekritique_dakInstagram:https://instagram.com/projectgeekology?igshid=1v0sits7ipq9yYouTube:https://www.youtube.com/@projectgeekologyGeekritique (Dakota):https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBwciIqOoHwIx_uXtYTSEbASupport the show
If you are wondering what kids mean when they say, “It's cringe” then watch this movie. Otherwise save yourself some time. On paper everything about this movie should work, but, and it's an enormous but, it doesn't. It's easy to identify why. This movie doesn't know what it wants to be when it grows up - is it a romance, a spy or an action movie. On the upside, if you listen to this episode you will learn the difference between action stories and spy stories - I have very strong opinions about this. We also have lots of fun with our cranky pants on. -M For access to writing templates and worksheets, and more than 70 hours of training (all for free), subscribe to Valerie's Inner Circle. To learn to read like a writer, visit Melanie's website.Follow Valerie on Instagram and Threads @valerie_francisFollow Melanie on X, Instagram and Facebook @MelanieHillAuthor

Welcome back to another edition of the Video Store Podcast! We're celebrating Memorial Day weekend with four films that might not have made your typical holiday weekend watchlist. Captain America (1990)You may have heard of Reb Brown, Chris Evans, Anthony Mackie, and Carl Lumbly, but you may have missed Matt Salinger. This overlooked Captain America film isn't highly rated, and yet boasts 2 Oscar nominees, an Emmy nominee, and Captain Jellico from Star Trek: The Next Generation. It's an oddity of early Marvel films, but one worth watching at least once. M*A*S*H (1970)Spinning off an incredibly popular TV series, this is the film that started it all. A black comedy that doesn't shy away from the horrors of war, it's an odd movie that got 5 Oscar nominations and won one for best screenplay based on another medium. Starring Donald Sutherland, Elliot Gould, Bud Cort, Tom Skerritt, Sally Kellerman, Robert Duvall, Rene Auberjonois, Robert Shuck, and so many more, it's a film that must be seen to be believed. G. I. Jane (1997)Next up is G. I. Jane, a film about fortitude, perseverance, and courage, starring Demi Moore. Demi Moore's Lt. Jordan O'Neill is selected as the first woman to attempt Navy Seal training. Demi Moore calls G. I. Jane her finest professional work in her autobiography, and I must say, I think I agree. The Rocketeer (1991)Our final film for this week is The Rocketeer, based on the comic of the same name. Directed by Joe Johnston and starring Billy Campbell, Jennifer Connelly, and Timothy Dalton, this is a fun pulpy adventure that is great fun and offers a good reminder about what to do when you encounter evil. Punch it in the face. Thanks for spending your Memorial Day with us on the Video Store Podcast! Thanks for reading Video Store Podcast! This post is public so feel free to share it. Rob Edwards is a thirty-year veteran of movies and television who wrote and produced shows including The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Full House, and In Living Color before writing two classic animated films for Walt Disney Feature Animation: the Academy Awards and Golden Globe nominated The Princess and The Frog, and the Academy Awards nominated Treasure Planet. His new project is the graphic novel Defiant: The Story of Robert Smalls. Rob Edwards reflects on being creative for a living, the difference between tourists and pretenders and being a real professional, and how he feels obligated to both teach and entertain in his work. He also shares what it was like working on such iconic TV shows as Roc and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and managing the pressure and responsibility of being one of the few Black creative workers with his range and depth of experience in Hollywood. Rob Edwards also does some sharing about his approach to writing the new Marvel film Captain America: Brave New World and how Anthony Mackie's character “Sam Wilson” (who is now the new “Captain America”) reflects the much deeper history of the long Black Freedom Struggle and the pressure to always succeed in the face of the (near) impossible. On this special Memorial Day episode of the podcast, Chauncey DeVega continues with his annual tradition of reading an account of the first such remembrance day that took place at the end of the Civil War when now free Black Americans buried Union Army war dead in Charleston, South Carolina and honored their sacrifice and victory over the Confederacy with a huge parade. Chauncey also reads an account written by a member of the United States Colored Troops about his experience(s) in the Civil War and doing battle against the forces of the Confederacy who were determined to keep Black people in bondage. And Chauncey DeVega goes on a journey around his neighborhood and has a surreal series of experiences where he was lucky to not be shot by street pirates, learned from a wise honored elder on the bus, and then encountered a young man who claimed to be a time traveler. How great is James Spader with this Ultron performance? Are there too many characters in this fully-loaded movie? They speak to their thoughts on Playboi Carti's album. (This was shot before we got official first week sales.) They talk records they liked and Terrance speaks to the coming reaction. The guys volley their thoughts and a reasons why they actually agree. They then speak to his thoughts on Masculinity and how he's choosing to raise his boys. Though they agree with Anthony for the most part, Terrell solos to highlight the preservation of boyhood and gives his thoughts on why he feels its dangerous to put so much pressure on the shoulders of a young boy. Terrance asks Terrrell a series of Red Flag questions which leads to a niche conversation about relationships and social media. The Rich Zeoli Show- Hour 4: 6:05pm- During Monday's White House press briefing, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt was asked about a report that a French member of European parliament is seeking to reposes the Statue of Liberty. Her response was hilarious, noting that if it wasn't for America, the French would be speaking German—referencing World War II. 6:20pm- According to research from the Heritage Foundation's Oversight Project, former President Joe Biden signed dozens of executive orders with an “autopen”—raising questions about the legitimacy of those actions. Did Biden know what he was signing? Earlier this year, Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) revealed that during a closed-door meeting Biden had no recollection of signing an executive order that effectively froze new liquid natural gas export permits. While aboard Air Force One this weekend, President Donald Trump said that Biden's autopen pardons should be “null and void.” 6:35pm- In a recent interview, “Captain America: Brave New World” star Anthony Mackie called out the “death of the American male.” He explained: “They have literally killed masculinity in our homes, in our communities for one reason or another. But I raise my boys to be young men. And however you feel about that, you feel about that.” 6:50pm- Senator Mark Kelly (D-AZ) decided to sell his Tesla, explaining: "Every time I drive it, I feel like a rolling billboard for a man dismantling our government and hurting people.”

Also, actor Anthony Mackie talks raising young men and says masculinity has been killed which leads to a heated debate from the JBP (1:46:09), Vivica Fox has been rumored to have gotten a BBL at age 60 (2:20:15), in movies and TV shows the castmates share what they are currently watching (2:50:28), and much more! Ryan Clark has returned to race baiting. Yesterday, he defended Shedeur Sanders, saying that anybody that criticizes him is racist. Teams have questions about his attitude, the same way they did with Johnny Manziel. It has nothing to do with skin color. Anthony Mackie, best know for his roles as The Falcon and then Captain America in the Marvel Universe, said that success is given, not earned. It's baffling that athletes agree with him as he says this. Sports are the ultimate meritocracy. Hollywood isn't, they're all installed out there. Mackie also gave a short monologue on how he raises his boys to be men. He stated that over the past 20 years, the American male has been destroyed. Someone needs to tell him that this process has been going on for far longer than that. The clowns on the Pivot aren't ready to have this conversation. Steve Kim joins Fearless later in the show to discuss Mackie's comments, as well as a comment Ric Bucher made about Stephen A. Smith and LeBron James' feud. He thinks that Smith made it ‘personal'. Whitlock and Steve also discuss the Buffalo Bills, as they just acquired Joey Bosa in NFL free agency. The show wraps up with Shemeka Michelle, as she joins Whitlock to talk on Mackie's comments about American masculinity. My biggest hurdle was convincing myself.” Anthony Mackie on role of Captain America Pivot Family, We are back in New Orleans like we never left! Sitting with NOLA's hometown hero who's Hollywood's new Captain America, Anthony Mackie, is sharing his rise to stardom in the film industry and taking us through how it all started and the challenges faced along the way. This open-book conversation between the guys is hilarious, riveting and full of energy and insight as we learn the real story behind a young black man who grew up in Louisiana with big screen aspirations and wasn't afraid to be different to pursue his dreams. Anthony's message about not just making it to the top but sustaining both status and respect in the industry may be unconventional as he tells the guys that success is given and not earned and that we've been lying to our youth by telling them differently. He explains how life is pushing past doubt, embracing opportunities, and finding the strength to carry the weight of something bigger than yourself while relying on relationships to find the next best thing. Being Black has yielded him certain experiences as well as taught him that having one talent or one dimension isn't enough to stay successful but needing an arsenal is what it takes. He talks about the differences between working actors and celebrities, including today's new wave of names and how the landscape has changed with social media. Anthony admits he never thought he'd be given the role of Captain America but gets vulnerable about the self-doubt he had to overcome... not convincing the world he could do it but convincing himself he was worthy of the role and what it means to represent the character in a new era. Reflecting on his New Orleans upbringing, Anthony tells Ryan, Channing and Fred how guys from “the hood don't do theater” but he found his calling early on through his elementary teacher who recognized his potential and helped him discover New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA) which gave him a sense of belonging and further inspired his acting career. Anthony shares stories and scenes that shaped him including what his rap battle with Eminem in 8 Mile truly signified, how he landed his role in Hurt Locker, how Don Cheadle inspired his craft and how having Denzel Washington as a mentor guided his career path by watching Denzel never be too big to do the little things that give passion purpose. Channing asks his Channing questions as he tells Captain America he's blown him away with a lot of his films but he didn't love his character portrayal of 2pac and also asks what led him to being ok playing a gay man. Beyond the big screen, Anthony opens up about losing his mother and best friend as a teenager which was a dark time that ultimately pivoted him down a path to find light again and take acting more seriously. He also discusses the importance of masculinity, raising his four sons to be responsible men and instilling strong family values despite being divorced from their mother. This episode is more than just Hollywood stories and laughs. It's about resilience, identity, and purpose. Anthony Mackie isn't just a mega star, he's a trailblazer in our time and proof that true leadership comes from honoring the past while inspiring the future. Learn more about your ad choices.
