There are teams that linger on in the memory long after they had vanished from the scene. One such team was the Brooklyn dodgers who was one if the winningest teams in the mid 20th century and had a storied and devoted following in the borough that was known as the bedroom of New York. The Montreal Expos was not as storied as the boys of summer Brooklyn Dodgers but over its 36 years of existence, "Les Expos" was as big to French speaking Canadians as Jackie Robinson, Duke Snider and Pee Wee Resse was to Brooklynites. Hello this is Dana Auguster, and my co-host Charles Combs will be along shortly or this new edition of the new and improved Historically Speaking Sports podcast where we give you the best of sports from back in the day.As you have probably noticed we have a new theme song...so thanks to my main man Ron Tyke Oliver and Donovan D who wrote produced and performed the theme... thanks for that gentlemen In this episode of the podcast we will continue out Forgotten Franchise series with a team that is hardly forgotten by baseball fans. The Montreal Expos are maybe more popular now then they were 20 years ago where their existence were hanging by a thread and was ran my Major League Baseball. yet during there time in Montreal before their move to Washington DC, the expos had some of the greatest players in baseball history over the last 50-plus years. Those players included the likes of Rusty Staub, known as the Grande Orange' the teams first superstar. also the likes of Andre Dawson, Tim Raines, John Wetteland, Steve Rogers, Vladimir Guerrero, and a catcher nicknamed "The Kid". We have that coming up as well as as shout out to the original team in Montreal....the Montreal Royals that had at one time a who-who of players to play for this minor league team in the international league including one Jack Roosevelt Robinson and a heartfelt tribute to Chicago Cubs great Ryne SandburgTo contact the show you could send us an email at Historically.Speaking.Sports@gmail.comThis is the Historically Speaking Sports Podcast, a member of the Sports History Network. It was also the first All-Star Game for several Hall of Famers, including Ozzie Smith and Andre Dawson. Enjoy as we look back on the 1981 MLB All-Star Game.

This week Ron, Elliott, and Pete welcome back special guest Dustin “The Duke” Duquenne as they dive headfirst into last weekend's fireworks at Wrigley, highlighted by an eight-homer beatdown of the Cardinals on the Fourth of July that set league and franchise records (for both teams!). As Elliott, Duke, and Pete gleefully recap every bomb, Ron copes with the Cardinals' ongoing rotation mismanagement – why hasn't Sonny Gray faced the Cubs this year? – and the baffling decision to keep running Miles Mikolas and Erick Fedde out to the mound.Duke brings the chaos, sparking classic banter and adding fuel to the fire during All-Star snub season. The guys vent about Seiya Suzuki's absence from the roster, Michael Busch's case over Freddie Freeman, and the absurdity of fan voting, especially when it gifts Ronald Acuña Jr. a starting spot with only 42 games played.Pete pays tribute to the late Lee Elia with a dramatic, profanity-laced replay of Elia's legendary 1983 tirade – a masterclass in manager meltdowns. They also touch on Andre Dawson's birthday, Wrigley's misunderstood park factors, and the absolute dumpster fire that is Cardinals Twitter/X.Other highlights include:A trade deadline preview and what the Cubs and Cardinals might doMic'd-up players and the awkward Sunday Night Baseball conversation with Masyn WinnThe Nationals' bizarre front office purgeRob Manfred's push for a salary cap and how that might actually workA nostalgic detour into He-Man toys and 80s cartoon logicRon's Soccer Minute: City SC's woes continue, with little hope coming via the transfer windowWhether you're basking in Cubs euphoria or buried under Cardinals frustration, this episode delivers laughs, rants, and the kind of unfiltered takes you've come to expect from the Team of Rivals.Check out Paul Jellison's full YouTube video of Lea Elia's rant.Check out this week's livestream on YouTube, Rumble, Facebook, or X.Follow us on X and Instagram. CubsPS+ Episode 110: The Joy of Greatness – PCA and 40 Years of Cubs Magic In this episode, I took a step back from the spreadsheets and stat lines to talk about something more visceral: joy. Specifically, the kind of joy that comes from watching greatness unfold right in front of us. Pete Crow-Armstrong isn't just playing well—he's turning every game into an event. I start by connecting this episode's number—110—to two Cubs legends: Ron Santo (#10 forever) and PCA's preseason 110 WRC+ projection. PCA has blown past that projection with a 137 WRC+ and has already become one of the most exciting players in baseball. I dive into his elite defense, blazing speed, and emerging bat—and why it all adds up to something Cubs fans haven't seen in decades. This episode isn't just about numbers—it's about feeling. The vibe. The aura. The once-in-a-generation energy that PCA is bringing. Inspired by PCA, I reflect on the rare moments over the last 40+ years when Cubs players reached that same level of "must-watch greatness": Andre Dawson's MVP season in 1987 Greg Maddux's dominance before the Cubs let him walk Kerry Wood's 20-strikeout masterpiece Sammy Sosa's video-game numbers and unforgettable 1998 Derrick Lee's incredible 2005 season Javy Báez's electric mix of flash and power Jake Arrieta's unreal run from mid-2015 to mid-2016 I ask a simple but essential question: When was the last time watching Cubs baseball felt like this? With the team on a 99-100 win pace despite injuries and with PCA leading a resurgence in center field, I urge listeners to appreciate the moment. I wrap with a reminder: greatness is rare. Don't just analyze it. Enjoy it. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Baseball expert and first time Hall of Fame voter David Brown is on the pod to talk about the Winter Meetings, the joys of the Opryland Hotel, guys falling into fountains and whether or not Shohei can hold up the entire the market. They make the case for why Shohei should get out and see more of the country, wonder how close the Cubs actually came to getting him last time, something Joe Maddon doesn't get enough credit for, what Cody Bellinger's real value is, why the Cardinals settled for bad, old pitchers to replace their bad, old pitchers and if the Cubs really signalled they're ready to pay when they hired Craig Counsell. They also talk about the Hall of Fame, and why off the field stuff other than steroids is and should be keeping some guys out. And, why it took Andre Dawson 12 years to realize he had an Expos logo on his plaque. All that, and more. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/desipio/message

Most people might remember Ned Colletti as the General Manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers. But this most accomplished veteran was also a PR director and contract negotiator for the Chicago Cubs, Assistant General Manager of the San Francisco Giants, analyst on Dodgers' TV, New Times best selling author, instructor at Pepperdine university and oh, did I mention a scout for the San Jose Sharks? Yes, Colletti is one of a handful of people who have worked professionally in two sports. “First time in my life to think about ok, do I change a course, do I change a path?”Thanks to the consistent pestering from then GM Doug Wilson, a player he used to cheer for when Wilson was a stellar defenseman for the chicago Blackhawks in the 80s did Colletti finally said yes to.Ned Colletti remembers when Andre Dawson came to Cubs camp as a free agent in 1987 and he and his agent gave GM Dallas Green a chance to sign the great star to a blank check. “Dallas wasn't happy about it. He was being put on the spot.” But they signed Dawson to a $500,000 deal plus incentives and all he did was win the National League's most valuable player award for a last place team!Colletti also dealt with the notorious Barry Bonds. “ I found him to be one of the most interesting people I've ver been around. Very engaging when he wanted to be. There was a side of him the media never saw and he didn't care.”Colletti spends his time traveling, and a lot up and down the west coast and Las Vegas. Plus, there are his myriad classes he teaches at Pepperdine.”I wasn't a very good student in high school.” Years later….”I'm giving the commencement speech at Pepperdine!”Nearing 70, Colletti still loves what he does.”I'm on the back nine. I might be on 18, I might be on 17, I might be on 15 but I'm definitely on the back nine of life.”Considering what Colletti continues to accomplish, I'll select hole 15 and eventually meet him on the 19th!Hear his full story on the newest "Tell Me A Story I Don't Know" as part of the Last Word on Sports Media Podcast Feed. When interviewing Ned Colletti for my podcast I asked him what he hasn't done. The man has been part of management of three Major League teams, an NHL franchise, been a TV analyst, wrote a best selling book and teaches classes at Pepperdine University. All of this while Colletti tries to balance a a family including grandchildren while traveling from San Jose to Los Angeles and Phoenix. But what Colletti has proven during his remarkable career is he's a tireless but incredibly enthusiastic professional. The Chicago native began his career with the Cubs and ascended to PR director and contract negotiator. From there he became assistant General Manager of the San Francisco Giants, GM of the Los Angels Dodgers and eventually their TV analyst and currently his role with San Jose Sharks and Pepperdine. He's been involved with such luminaries as Andre Dawson, Ryne Sandberg, Harry Caray, Brian Sabean, Barry Bonds and Doug Wilson just to mention a few. Colletti might be most proud of giving the commencement speech at Pepperdine admitting he wasn't much of a student in high school. But he learned what it took be one of the tops at everything he did….and still does!Hear the show coming Tuesday!"Tell Me A Story I Don't Know" is part of the Last Word on Sports Media Podcast feed and make sure to follow/subscribe on Apple, Spreaker, Spotify, Google, etc.!!
