In 1965, the world's first full enclosed sports facility, the Houston Astrodome, was opened to the public. The Astrodome itself was a marvel of engineering, but because it was enclosed, the grass that was initially planted soon died. It was replaced with artificial grass, which was basically a synthetic carpet that looked like grass but played and behaved totally differently. Today, the next generations of that artificial grass can be found in stadiums all over the world. Learn more about artificial turf, how it was created and improved over time on this episode of Everything Everywhere Daily. The current football student-athletes of the NESCAC are probably too young to envision a crowd of fans in the Astrodome chanting "Let them play!" about the Bad News Bears. They are too young to remember the Astrodome. And they are nothing like the Bad News Bears, but still, the powers-that-be in the New England Small College Athletic Conference have not allowed their conference teams to participate in the Division III football playoffs. Ever. Because the Ivy League does it that way, right? Well, that's changing, starting this year, and a group of NESCAC student-athletes are organizing on their campuses to make sure that they don't get left behind, or pushed off another year. That's the NESCAC Football Players Association (NESCACFBPA), a group representing football student-athletes at all 10 member schools, and we talk with a number of them on this edition of the D3football.com Around the Nation Podcast. This edition of the podcast is sponsored by GameStrat: The Most Reliable & Fastest In-Game Video Replay System on The Market. D-III football coaches should click here to learn more. The presidents of the NESCAC need to act now, not wait and make these student-athletes wait for another year when they have waited for generation after generation already. Hear from Vaughn Seelicke of Tufts, Jack Lucido of Wesleyan, Parker Huynh-Benningfield of Bates, Aidan Moss of Middlebury and Justin Keller of Tufts about the issues, what they learned from Ivy League student organizers, and how they are working to make this happen here, in 2025. In addition, we chat with new Lewis & Clark head coach Brett Elliott. Yes, that's the Brett Elliott who has been offensive coordinator at Linfield, who led Linfield to a national title as a quarterback and was the 2005 D3football.com Offensive Player of the Year. He'll talk about the quick and efficient interview process, how he found out who his leaders are on his new team, and what he did on his first weekend on the job. Plus we update the Cortland coaching search, and take your questions, many of them, and more in this edition of the podcast, as we start Season No. 19.

Rick Reiff is our guest this week to discuss his essay in the Fall 2024 Baseball Research Journal, "Gavy Cravath's Hall-Worthy 200 Home Runs." Cravath, a late arrival, played 11 seasons in the Major Leagues and led the National League in home runs in six of those seasons, from 1913 to 1919. Cravath also led the Senior Circuit in RBI twice, in on base percentage twice and slugging percentage three times. Despite being the preeminent home run hitter in the Deadball Era, Cravath remains on the outside looking in for Hall of Fame induction. Reiff makes the case to remedy this.In part 2, Craig and Rex talk about the Rays playing their 2025 regular season at the Yankees' spring training home, the latest billion-dollar boondoggle to return the Houston Astrodome, an aging eyesore, to usefulness and how to turn a juice box to an ice box.Errata: Craig, its the Donner Party, not the Bonner Party. You can support Hooks & Runs by purchasing books through our store at Bookshop.org. Happy Friday! Host Raheel Ramzanali is back with the biggest stories you need to know about H-town. He's joined by Houston Landing's diverse communities reporter Monique Welch. Raheel and Monique start with breaking down the new billion-dollar plan to revive the Astrodome, but Raheel's not convinced anything will come of it. Then, they unpack why voters skipped so many local races on the ballot, and how that could have changed results. Plus, why are Houston police response times the worst since the 1990s? And, of course, they end the week with their moments of joy. Stern joins us in this episode to talk about his book and the how baseball and the theater contributed to the rise of the American culture, culminating with Babe Ruth's emergence as a national hero in the early 1920s. On Thursday's show: The Astrodome Conservancy, a nonprofit that advocates for the preservation of the one-time "Eighth Wonder of the World," has unveiled a $1 billion redevelopment concept for the Dome. We find out what the plan calls for, who would pay for it, who needs to buy in, and what may set the idea apart from past proposals for the Astrodome. Also this hour: We discuss how physical media, such as vinyl records, DVDs, and books may be in a state of decline and renaissance all at the same time. And, on the anniversary of the U.S. Army overturning convictions of Black soldiers that stemmed from the 1917 Houston Riots, we visit the Buffalo Soldiers National Museum.
Looking to make the future a bit brighter here in Houston, just recently the Astrodome Conservancy released new plans for the old Astrodome area and what they may consist of doing with the area. Aiming to turn the area into a multi-use community following the possible addition of multiple businesses and venues to be placed in and around the district, many are excited about the "Vision Astrodome" and what it may bring to the city of Houston. The project pushes into the billion dollar price range as the Astrodome Conservancy urges citizens to sign a petition to show support for the plan although, some believe the historic landmark should be used for other use in the community instead. Many believe the area should turn into a Casino & Resort area while some think it's taking up space and should be tore down. With nothing stamped and for certain just yet on what the area may become, is it possible the Astrodome may be torn down in the months to come?
Hour 1 of the Killer B's with Joel Blank, and Jeremy Branham included... The guys mock this new billion dollar idea to save the Astrodome, where in the world would that money come from? It comes in the Giants' 12-5 win over the Cincinnati Reds at Riverfront Stadium. September 26, 1955 - The Red Sox beat the Yankees 8-1 as Ted Williams goes 1-for-20. Williams finishes the season batting .356, well ahead of Al Kaline's .340, but does not have enough at bats to win the batting title due to the 71 times he walked. The same thing happened in 1954 when Williams was walked 136 times. A rule change would be made to recognize plate appearances, not times at bat.September 26, 1981 - At the Astrodome, Nolan Ryan becomes the first pitcher to throw five no-hitters, defeating the Dodgers, 5-0. Ryan had shared the record of four with Dodger great Sandy Koufax.

Oscar-Winner and frontman for the Boxmasters Billy Bob Thornton and his longtime bandmate, Grammy-winning guitarist JD Andrew, sit with Says Who Sports to talk music, movies and a whole lotta sports!Thornton has been a big fan of sports, especially baseball, all his life. He grew up in rural Arkansas and became a fan of the St. Louis Cardinals. Thornton shares his excitement at meeting Stan Musial and Bob Gibson, what it was like to witness the power of slugger Albert Pujols taking cuts in batting practice from an on-field perspective, drinking beers with Goose Gossage, a smoking session with Jim Leyland, his close relationship with former Cardinals manager Tony LaRussa, and his pick between Greg Maddux and Roger Clemens to pitch a winner-take-all game. Thornton, who starred in the movie Friday Night Lights, discusses immersing himself in the intensity and drama of Texas high school football, his iconic halftime speech in the movie, and his big respect for kickers, reinforced thru his own (painful) attempts at kicking seemingly simple extra points during breaks in filming in the Astrodome. Thornton, who has played and toured with the best in the music business since he was a teenager, and Andrew discuss their musical brotherhood of nearly two decades, their earliest musical influences, and stories of recording and sharing stages with many of their musical heroes, from ZZ Top to Warren Zevon. Andrew recounts what it was like working as a mixer in the studio with the Rolling Stones during the sessions for A Bigger Bang, including special moments with Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. Thornton discusses how winning an Oscar for Sling Blade changed his life, his gratitude for the cast members of the movie and the friendships that developed, and if Sling Blade could even be made today.

It seems to come up every year, retaliating by drilling the opposing team's hitter if they hit your guy. Gio thinks it's weird because we often talk about safety in sports, and then say you have to retaliate. The Yankees did it last night and it hurt them because the guy they hit scored. It does seem to make the fans happy, but it really didn't make much sense for them to do that. Will Aaron Judge be in the lineup today? We also somehow talked about Boomer always playing poorly in the Astrodome against the Oilers. C-Lo returns for an update and starts with a Devils trade for goalie Jacob Markstrom (Boomer insisted he start with that). He then went to Barclay Goodrow being claimed off waivers by the Sharks. Then we turned to baseball as Jose Trevino gave up another 4 steals. Gerrit Cole talked about his first start of the season. Brandon Tierney really wanted the Yankees to drill two Orioles. The Mets winning streak came to an end with a loss to the Rangers. We got into a discussion about mosquitos and how they suck our blood. In the final segment of the hour, a mom from Long Island called in to tell her side of the story from yesterday, when Jerry said there was almost a fight between parents at a little league game. A few callers came at her and she remained calm and stood her ground.
Hour 1 The Grimace Mets finally lost a game after winning seven straight. The Yankees also lost to the Orioles and they have a defensive catcher problem with Jose Trevino. Yankees relievers hit two Orioles last night in retaliation for Aaron Judge getting hit the night before. Judge did not play last night. Boomer tried to talk about the Rangers and Barclay Goodrow and Gio couldn't handle it. Unfortunately he talked about it for quite a while. C-Lo is in for Jerry and is here for his first update of the day. Jerry took his family to Arizona, where it's going to be 113 degrees. C-Lo started with the Yankees loss to the Orioles and Gerrit Cole getting his first start of the season. The Mets winning streak is over and they play in Chicago starting tomorrow. In the final segment of the hour, Gio visited Gunnar yesterday and watched him ‘powerwash'. It did not go well. Gio understands, as the only tool in his toolbox is a checkbook. Hour 2 It seems to come up every year, retaliating by drilling the opposing team's hitter if they hit your guy. Gio thinks it's weird because we often talk about safety in sports, and then say you have to retaliate. The Yankees did it last night and it hurt them because the guy they hit scored. In the final segment of the hour, a mom from Long Island called in to tell her side of the story from yesterday, when Jerry said there was almost a fight between parents at a little league game. A few callers came at her and she remained calm and stood her ground. Hour 3 We continued our discussion on youth sports and how some parents get completely out of hand. C-Lo returns for an update and starts with the Yankees losing to the Orioles in ten innings. The Yankees retaliated by hitting two Orioles players after Aaron Judge got hit on the hand the night before. Buck Showalter talked about what he looks for in a player. He doesn't want a flat butt player or a player that already has a full beard. He has his reasons. Boomer talked about quarterbacks needing to be thick in the butt and thighs. In the final segment of the hour, Boomer said he watched the Fever vs the Mystics in the WNBA. The Mets are off and the Yankees are playing a day game, so Gio will watch the Netflix documentary, ‘Tell Them You Love Me', about a professor at Rutgers and a non-verbal person. The professor went to jail so it's pretty interesting. Hour 4 We talked more about the Yankees retaliating last night by hitting two Orioles hitters. We also heard from Joe Francisco, as his little league team was being badmouthed from some opponents in NJ. C-Lo returns for his final update of the day, but first Boomer tries to talk him into doing the 5-Borough Bike Tour next May. The Moment of The Day involves a little league mom defending her team's behavior and a caller telling her she's the problem with youth sports. In the final segment of the show, we are both getting texts about Team Francisco, a little league team on Long Island. Gio also talked about the lack of lovemaking if someone is staying at their house.
From his Bengals days: They ran up the score to 61 against the Oilers because Sam Wyche hated Jerry Glanville. We end with that song.
