The Atlanta Braves may have fallen to the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday, but still have the opportunity to win the series Thursday with Spencer Schwellenbach on the mound. Schwellenbach has had a couple of rough starts as of late, and should be able to use a below average Reds offense to get back right. In fact, the Braves can use the next 4 series versus the average likes of Pirates, Nationals, and Red Sox to get back right as a team. As of now, the Braves are still 6 games back of the Mets for first place in the National League East, but only 2 games back of the scuffling Philadelphia Phillies for second place. If the Braves can simply win the next 4 series versus the aforementioned teams, they should be able to pull within only a couple of games of first place when they welcome the San Diego Padres in to Truist Park in two weeks. Randy McMichael and Abe Gordon talk more about the Braves young pitching staff learning on the job, and how the next couple of weeks can help shape their season.
The 1980 Philadelphia Phillies delivered the most celebrated season in franchise history to that point, capturing their first-ever World Series title after nearly a century of trying. Managed by Dallas Green, the team combined veteran leadership, clutch hitting, and a deep pitching staff to finish 91–71 and win the National League East in a tightly contested race.Mike Schmidt led the charge with an MVP season, blasting 48 home runs and driving in 121 runs while playing elite defense at third base. He was the undisputed anchor of the lineup. Pete Rose, in his second year with the Phillies, brought postseason experience and grit, while Greg Luzinski, Bake McBride, and Garry Maddox rounded out a dangerous offense. The pitching staff was anchored by Steve Carlton, who went 24–9 and won his third Cy Young Award. Tug McGraw provided energy and reliability out of the bullpen, delivering several key performances in high-leverage situations down the stretch and into the postseason. The Phillies survived a dramatic NLCS against the Houston Astros, considered one of the greatest playoff series ever played. In the World Series, they defeated the Kansas City Royals in six games, with Schmidt and Carlton leading the way and McGraw striking out Willie Wilson to seal the title. The 1980 Phillies ended decades of frustration for the franchise and their fanbase, finally securing a championship for a team that had long carried the burden of being baseball's oldest and most title-starved club.- 3B - Mike Schmidt- LF-RF - Lonnie Smith- RF - Bake McBride- LF - Greg Luzinski- 2B - Manny Trillo- 1B - Pete Rose- CF - Garry Maddox- C - Bob Boone- SS - Larry Bowa- SP - Bob Walk- SP - Steve Carlton- SP-RP - Randy Lerch- SP - Dick Ruthven- RP - Tug McGraw- RP - Ron Reed
The Braves are 5 games back from the Philadelphia Phillies for 1st place in the National League East, 5 games. In 2022 the Braves walked down the New York Mets and won the NL East after being down ELEVEN games after the All-Star Break! Not all hope is lost, and while the Braves have a lot of work to do to get out of this hole, the hole is by no means insurmountable. Andy Bunker and Randy McMichael talk more about the hole that the Braves have found themselves in to start the season, and what they need to do in this first home-stand of the season to start finding their way out of it.

Len Ferman's new book, The 1973 Mets - You've Got to Believe, is a day to day saga about a Mets team that that rallied from last place with a 61-71 record on August 31 to win the National League East with an 82-79 record. The Eastern Division race that year saw five teams still in the hunt for the title in the season's final week. In the end, the Mets won the title outright on the season's final day with just 5 games separating the champs from the fifth place Chicago Cubs. The Mets shocked the 99-win Cincinnati Reds in the five-game NL Championship series then stretched the Oakland A's, the defending World Series champs, to seven games before coming up short. The team featured the great Willie Mays in his final season and future Hall of Famer Tom Seaver, the 1973 NL Cy Young Award winner. Many Braves fans have been without being able to watch the Atlanta Braves on television since the Spring. With Bally and Comcast reaching an agreement this past week to bring the Braves back to the cable company, a lot of fans will be tuning in for the first time in several months. A lot of things have happened in that span of a few months. Superstars Ronald Acuña Jr, Michael Harris , Ozzie Albies, and Max Fried have gotten injured and were placed on the injured list. Old faces have found their way back home in the likes of Adam Duvall, Jorge Soler, and Luke Jackson. This is a completely different team that got hot in the month of April, and they even find themselves in 2nd place in the National League East division. looking up at the Philadelphia Phillies. The Braves have a sub-.500 record since May 1, so fans have not missed a whole lot, in fact, several fans are probably glad they they have missed so much heartache. But hopefully the Braves are turning things around just at the right time. They are coming off of a road-trip that saw them win four of five after surrendering two straight to the Mets to open the series. Matt Olson is heating up, as he hit four homeruns on the road trip, and Austin Riley and Marcell Ozuna continue to hit the ball well. It is actually a very good time to be able to tune in to television to see what the Braves are doing. Andy Bunker and Randy McMichael talk more about recent surge of the Braves, and what this may mean for their playoff chances.
The Atlanta Braves are showing signs of breaking out at the plate after a long and frustrating road. Are they heating up in time to impact the National League East race? Grant McAuley dives into the week that was for the Braves, including the hot hitting of new leadoff man Jarred Kelenic. Is he finally breaking through at the plate as a big leaguer? Can Austin Riley and others keep up their recent trends and get the Atlanta lineup where it needs to be going forward? On the mound, rookie Spencer Schwellenbach has impressed the Braves and is earning the opportunity to pitch some meaningful innings for the club. Veteran Chris Sale has been one of the best stories of the first half and one of the best pitchers in the game. Has he pitched his way into the NL Cy Young conversation? Special guest Heidi Watney of Apple TV+ joins the show to discuss that and the Braves' big weekend in the Bronx. You'll also hear from reliever A.J. Minter, who was up in Rome to get some work in on Saturday. He chats about his rehab outing and what the next steps will be. Meanwhile, Ian Anderson is facing hitters in Florida again. Will the young righty be ready for his own rehab assignment soon? All of that and much more in the Braves discussion this week. Across Major League Baseball, the loss of Willie Mays was felt from coast to coast. His life and legacy were celebrated at Rickwood Field this week. His godson, Barry Bonds, was on hand to pay tribute and make some waves on the Fox broadcast. With Mays' passing, it brings up the question: Who is the greatest living baseball player? Jayson Stark of The Athletic checks in to discuss Mays' legacy, his incredible statistics, why his impact goes far beyond the numbers and shares some stories of Mays accomplishments as well. From The Diamond airs live on 92-9 The Game in Atlanta on Sundays from 5-7 pm ET. You can also subscribe wherever you get your podcasts. The Atlanta Braves came into the 2024 season with lofty expectations after winning the most games in baseball last season. However, things have taken a bit of a turn for Atlanta in their last 40 games — they've gone 17-23 and have fallen 10 games behind the Philadelphia Phillies for first place in the National League East.Jake Mintz and Jordan Shusterman examine what exactly has gone wrong for the Atlanta Braves this season and why there is still hope for them to make the postseason despite losing Spencer Strider and Ronald Acuna Jr. for the rest of the season. But considering they haven't made too many changes to their 2023 squad, being shutout by Albert Suarez and the Baltimore Orioles should raise some red flags. Also on this episode of the Baseball Bar-B-Cast, the guys talk about Paul Skenes receiving a rare standing ovation on the road following a 6+-innings performance agains the St. Louis Cardinals, Major League Baseball dropping the ball when it came to the debut of Rintaro Sasaki and Cavan Biggio being traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Jake and Jordan wrap the show by giving a quick preview of the College World Series and what they're most excited to see.(2:21) - What's up with the Braves?(27:04) - The O's tough schedule(29:16) - Paul Skenes' road ovation(35:59) - MLB dropping the ball(45:39) - Cavan Biggio traded(49:50) - College World Series previewFollow the show on X at @CespedesBBQFollow Jake @Jake_MintzFollow Jordan @J_Shusterman_
The Atlanta Braves are scuffling right now, and that may be putting it lightly. On top of that, the Philadelphia Phillies are now nine games up on the Braves for the lead in the National League East, and Philadelphia radio pundits are chirping about the division race being over... in early June! (The Mets made this proclamation in 2022 btw). So what is going on? While losing Spencer Strider was indeed a huge blow, the pitching staff as a whole has held it together very well. Losing Ronald Acuña Jr was also a seemingly insurmountable loss, but Acuña Jr was having one of the worst seasons of his career. Where does the blame get placed? Brian Snitker is not mis-managing games; It seems that the best offense in MLB last season is simply just not performing. Is it a trade deadline shot in the arm that they need? It could be, but where should it go? The Braves could go out and trade for starting pitching, but is that really what they need? Both Spencer Schwellenbach and Hurston Waldrep looked good in the early innings of their first starts, but neither guy could hold it together in the middle innings. At this point, you have to find out what they can do with further opportunities, no? It is highly likely, based on history, that Alex Anthopoulos will make4 a trade before or at the deadline, and that trade will work out nicely. But until then, can these guys just start playing better?
The Atlanta Braves got the unfortunate news of Ronald Acuña Jr tearing the ACL in his left knee late Sunday night after leaving Sunday afternoon's game vs the Pittsburgh Pirates. This makes tears to both the right and left Acuña's ACLs in a span of 4 years. Are these injuries due to Acuña's Jr's style of play? If they are, what would be the solution? Run less? Maybe. It will be at least a year until Acuña Jr. is back on the field, but we also remember how 2022 went, the year following the tear of Acuña Jr's right knee, and it wasn't great. Should the Braves try to turn Ronald Acuña Jr in to a power hitter that doesn't run as much? There is history of the handful of baseball players that have achieved the 40-40 season slowing down almost immediately and focusing more on power, so maybe that was already in the cards. Andy Bunker and John Fricke discuss the eventual return of Ronald Acuña Jr and what it may look like.
We're happy to welcome back Al Getz (@AlGetzWrestling) to discuss the latest edition of his Charting the Territories books, this one covering 1971-1973 Gulf Coast Wrestling. We talk about the main players in the territory at this time, including Cowboy Bob Kelly, Bobby Shane, Don Fargo and Rip Tyler, as well as future stars like Kevin Sullivan, Steve Keirn, Ron Bass and Greg Valentine, wrestling as Don's brother Johnny Fargo. We talk about the towns the promotion ran and some of the interesting ways they crowned champions there (not with belts or trophies). Then, as we did recently with Beau James, we talk about the travails of being a wrestling historian, covering a business that's built on a lie. How hard is it to get “accurate” data on things like shows, box office and the like? And Al talk us through his methodology, both online and boots on the ground research. We chat about Al being inducted into the Tragos/Thesz Pro Wrestling Hall of Fame in Waterloo, Iowa, getting the James C. Melby Historian Award. The show ends with some quick baseball chat, with the season just a week old and Al's Atlanta Braves being the only National League East team with a winning record. He also tells us about his first road trip of the year and dealing with weather issues with early spring baseball in the Midwest. And the next episode of the Charting the Territories will look at Dick the Bruiser's WWA in Indianapolis coming next week.
In the next installment in our MLB Preview series on the Jack Vita Show, managing editor of Sports Illustrated's Braves Today and Inside the Marlins Lindsay Crosby visits the show to preview a division that is very near and dear to his heart, the National League East! Lindsay and Jack get things started with the Atlanta Braves. The Braves, powered by a historic offense, won 104 games last season en route to their sixth-straight NL East division title. Over the winter, the club added reclamation projects Chris Sale and Jarred Kelenic. Will the Braves win the division for the seventh-straight year in 2024? And will the Braves return to the World Series after a pair of disappointing NLDS losses to the Philadelphia Phillies? Next, Lindsay and Jack tackle the Phillies. The Phillies have impressed in the past two postseasons, logging a 19-11 record in 30 playoff games. However, the club squandered a 3-2 lead over the Arizona Diamondbacks in the NLCS last October, dashing their World Series hopes. How will the Fightin' Phils respond in 2024? The New York Mets greatly disappointed in 2023. Will the coming season be a reflection of last year, or will the Mets get back in the win column? Could a young Washington Nationals team exceed expectations? Or will it be another long summer in D.C.? Finally, the Miami Marlins impressed last year, reaching the playoffs for the first time in a full, 162-game season since 2003. But with a -57 run-differential and injuries to their pitching staff, might Skip Schumacher's regress in 2024? Lindsay and Jack have you covered, providing detailed outlooks and over/under win total projections for each team! Atlanta Braves (0:00 - 14:35) Philadelphia Phillies (14:35 - 21:25) New York Mets (21:25 - 29:00) Washington Nationals (29:00 - 44:40) Miami Marlins (44:40 - END) You can follow Lindsay on Twitter (@CrosbyBaseball) and check out his work over at Braves Today and Inside the Marlins!
