Part 2 of our MST3k/RenFest themed episode, Hob The Troll talks to Trace Beaulieu! What? How?! YES!

Happy New Year! It IS me, Marc Hershon, your host and New Year’s baby for 2016. And this is Succotash, The Comedy Podcast Podcast. It’s the first edition of Succotash Clips for this new year, and we have a fine passel of clippage for you. Before we get into the nit and the grit of what’s in store this time around, I thought I’d check in to see how many of you Succotashians are also Resolutionaries. You know, those folk who steadfastly trot out a litany of resolutions for the new year. New leaves that they are bound and determined to turn over this time for sure, only to almost immediately start backsliding furiously on their self-commitments. I tend to go pretty low key and achievable with the resolutionary action, mostly because I know, after being around as long as I have, I’ve got a pretty good idea how low to set the bar in order to clear it. My first resolution is one I’ve been kicking off the past ten years or so with, and that’s to go without regular coffee or any other form of caffeine for one month. I LOVE coffee – its aroma, its flavor and its effects. But I know it’s not all good in term of the way you feel if you miss your morning cup so I’ve taken this step to purge my system of caffeine and its residual cravings for 31 days. Achievable! The other one is exercise. I’m actually pretty good with this one, to the point that this is actually a resolution to continue my exercise regimen, not jump start it. To help out, I’ve signed up for a 10K race in April, so I just need to press a little harder and I should be ready for that.  Achievable! Regarding Succotash, well, I’m just going to shoot for bigger and better this year. I’ve arranged with our friend Shawn Merek to put on the first LIVE epi of Succotash just one month from now. That’s right. Friday night, February 5th, at 6 PM at the Improv Lab on Melrose Avenue in Hollywood. I’m still firming up the details and will have more information for you shortly, but we’ll have some amazing guests and a lot of fun that night. But we’re also aiming to have a lot of fun right NOW. The Clips How To Be AmazingWe’ve clipped podcasts featuring Michael Ian Black as a host before – like Mike And Tom Eats Snacks and TOPICS. But he’s had a new one out for the past year called How To Be Amazing, where his guests are mostly authors and he picks there brains about their backgrounds, their careers, and how they do what they do so well. I just reviewed his recent two-part interview with author David Sedaris for Huffington Post this past week. Very entertaining and enlightening interview, so I thought we’d pull a nice clip out of it. The New Hollywood PodcastI’ve got a clip from The New Hollywood podcast, hosted by friend-of-Succotash Brian Flaherty. Brian’s been getting some great guests on his show and most recently he chatted it up with Paula Pell, a very funny writer who’s been on-staff at SNL since 1995, produced and wrote on 30 Rock, wrote the screenplay Sisters, which Tina Fey and Amy Poehler starred in, and on and on. In the clip we're featuring, she relates to Brian what her first few days moving out to Los Angeles was like. I’m kinda surprised she survived. Victrola!Another podcast I recently reviewed was Victrola!, which is the namesake of a plucky little troupe from Austin’s Coldtowne Theater. They rolled out a first eight episodes of their monthly show in 2015, and they promise to return for a second season. The shows are all written by and starring Michael Jastroch, Bob McNichol, Bryan Roberts, Lance Gilstrap, Cortnie Jones and Jericho Thorp. In December, they’d dropped a compilation show, with sketches from the first eight epis, and here’s one of them — a riff on Jurassic World. Royal & DoodallIf you felt a disturbance in The Force the past couple of weeks, that wasn’t the new Star Wars movie opening, it was the return of the Royal & Doodall podcast. After some time away from the mics, Tommy Royal and Angus Doodall are back. Where have they been? What have they been doing? Well, you’ll have to download and subscribe to their podcast for the intimate details but here’s a snippet of R&D banter to give you a taste. HobcastWe haven’t chatted up our friend Hob The Troll lately, the purveyor of The Hobcast. But I do chat with him every so often on Twitter and occasionally on Facebook. That’s how I know about his recent Christmas special. The Hobcast has been a little…off-schedule during 2015, but Hob got it together enough to produce a fun little holiday episode where he placed phone calls to some folks. Some of those people apparently donated money for the opportunity to hear from Hob but this clip doesn’t come from one of those calls… River City RantUploading clips directly to us is not the only way for comedy podcasters to get their stuff on the show, of course. Without further ado, here’s a sampling of River City Rant. The Potato BureauOnce upon a time there was a show out of Sacramento, California, called the Van Full of Candy podcast. Fresh episodes stopped showing up in the early months of last year but the guys connected to it – a bunch of sketch and improv performers – have branched out in new and different ways AND other podcasts. We featured a clip from STAB! back in the fall and now here’s a clip from another show called the Potato Bureau. Fun concept – let me read from their iTunes description: The Potato Bureau is a musically-inspired improv podcast, recorded live at the Sacramento Comedy Spot. Every show features a local musician or group performing on stage for the audience. They give the Bureau a few songs and stories, and the Bureau uses those nuggets of inspiration to take you on a (sometimes crazy) audible journey. The cast of the Potato Bureau is  Corky McDonnell, Zach Coles, Tina Jett, Eric Barger, Michell Petro, Molly Doan, and Court Hansen. Here’s a sample of what they sound like in action… The Mike Jolitz ShowWhen I guest on other podcasts, like Dave Nelson’s Comedy A-Go-Go show, I often talk about how one of the shining benefits of the medium of podcasting is that the barrier of entry is so low that pretty much anyone can do it. You just need a mic, something to record with, a smattering of knowledge how to get what you record online, and an idea for the show. A lot of the shows we clip are hosted by comedians or other well-known entertainers and it’s clear some of those production budgets are decently sized. I was recently DM’ing with Mike Jolitz on Twitter and he’s a one-man operation, that podcasting-from-the-kitchen-table model. I’m not sure what the size of his listenership is yet and he’s still feeling his way into his sound. So I thought we’d give him a shout out and play a clip from The Mike Jolitz Show. The Comedy Club focuses on Cobb's Comedy Club, from its inception in the Marina District through it's relocation and subsequent fire in the Cannery to its present location downtown. The comedians who have crossed the Cobb's stage range from the legendary to the obscure, and it's a story that's been lovingly told by filmmaker David Schendel. The film's almost all done except for final processing bits n' pieces. Check out the trailer and maybe even get your name in the credits at https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/the-comedy-club.    THE CLIPS Chillpak Hollywood HourWe usually feature a snippet from this show each week that has Chillpak Hollywood hosts Dean Haglund and Phil Leirness mentioned Succotash. But the boys have been busy and that means pre-recorded shows with guests and not much mention of us. (Although they did tag us at the very end of the most recent show - thanks, guys!) So I figured this was a good opportunity to play a straight-up clip of this excellent show. It's a story of Dean's early days in Hollywood, and who he found when he went star-spotting at the once-popular Sky Bar. The Wolf DenThis show from the Earwolf Network, subtitled “The Business and Future of Podcasting”, is hosted by the network's co-founder Jeff Ulrich. It was just announced this past week that Mr. Ulrich is stepping down as CEO of Earwolf and also The Midroll, which is his podcast advertising agency. In an open letter to the Internet, he let everyone know that he’s taking a bit of a hiatus from showbiz, spending time with his family and figuring out his next steps in life. (I'm assuming The Wolf Den is either going away or maybe transitioning to a new host…) We feature a slice of Jeff’s chat with guest and fellow podcasting magnate Chris Hardwick from The Nerdist Network. The Smartest Man In The WorldI just did a review of Greg Proops’ The Smartest Man in the World for Splitsider and Huffington Post. And I realized it’s been a while since I clipped that show, which is a great example of – as I say in the review – a Master of the Spew. Someone who can keep up a steady stream of entertaining solo monologue. There are podcasters like Bill Burr and Larry Miller and Marc Maron who are certainly Spew Masters but Greg is one of the only guys who really only does it in front of a live audience as opposed to in a studio or an apartment or whatever. He was recently over in Wales, at the literary Hay Festival in the town of Hay and I pulled a slice of him getting into a riff around one of Wales’ favorite sons… Dining with Doug & KarenDoug Benson is, perhaps, most famous for his Doug Loves Movies podcast but he’s funny at so much else, including his Benson Interruptions and his Getting Doug With High YouTube show. With all that pot smoking that DB does though, comes a powerful need to feed. I’m not sure if that was the inspiration for Dining with Doug and Karen, featuring Mr. Benson and Karen Anderson but, high or not, you'll enjoy them along with guest Greg Behrendt as they all eat “Belly Bombz Asian fusion wings". Norm MacDonald LiveThere have only been about 15 episodes of Norm MacDonald Live, with comedian Norm MacDonald and co-host Adam Eget, and it’s actually a VIDEOcast from The Video Podcast Network, which is probably why it wasn’t exactly on my radar until now. (The 'sodes are later released as audiocasts via iTunes.) We're featuring a clip from a recent outing in which Norm was lucky enough to corral comic great Carl Reiner on the show. TANcastThe TANcast is a show I’ve seen tweets about but never listened to but then was inspired to when I saw some fun Photoshoppery by Tim Babb, one of the three hosts. He’s also a standup comedian, whereas his two buddies, Adam and Noah — T, A & N. TAN. TANcast, get it? — are not comics. But they were all roommates at one time and now, even though they are separated by distance, technology brings them together every week. This clip is from one of their regular features, TANLaughs, in which they read jokes sent in by their listeners. Sometimes really bad jokes. There's Epi89 in a nutshell. Or a blog, rather. I announced last week that GW was folding up the tent on Inverse Delirium, his 4-year-old podcast, which he has done. So then I thought it might be insightful to find out what led him to that decision and it is – so we’ll hear that in a little bit in addition to the final message to his listeners that he posted this past week. Monster PartyBack in Succotash Epi53 I interviewed my friend and comedian Matt Weinhold who had, at the time, been experimenting with a new podcast idea that he and buddies James Gonis, Shawn Sheridan, and Larry Strohe – all Hollywood writers – had done on video where they drank adult beverages and talked about one main subject: Monster movies. Well, now Monster Party is an ongoing thing and in the most recent episode, the boys and guest Dana Gould sunk their teeth into vampire movies. In this clip they ponder the origins of Blackula. NerdistLast week I reviewed the Nerdist with Chris Hardwick and Jonah Ray – Matt Myra wasn’t on this particular episode, where they interviewed director/actor/writer Jon Favreau, who has a new movie out that he both directed AND starred in called Chef. In this clip, they talk about spoilers and puzzle over the etiquette of how long you should wait before talking about a show. IllusionoidOne of my favorite podcasts continues to be Illusionoid, which is an improvised science fiction comedy podcast out of Toronto. I’ve interviewed the three guys – Paul Bates, Lee Smart, and Nug Nahrgang (the best name is podcasting) – before and met them when they were in San Francisco for the SF Improv Festival last year. Haven’t played ‘em for a while though, so here’s a clip from their recent LIVE episode from Comedy Bar in Toronto, along with their special guests Craig Anderson, Ashley Comeau, and Kyle Dooley of Bad Dog Theatre. Hob The TrollSome TV shows used to have very specific theme songs – think about things like the Addams Family – or an even better example in this case is Gilligan’s Island, where the theme song changed after the first season to include mentioned The Professor and MaryAnne instead of referencing them simply as “all the rest”. Hob The Troll is a show that is hosted by a character that pops up at Renaissance Faires around the country. He sings and does comedy and is easily the happiest, non-goat-eating troll around. In podcast form, Hob The Troll features guest characters, often played by actors and comedians, such as Mark Gagliarti’s King John. He recently upgraded his show’s opening theme song, both versions of which are so specific that I thought it would be fun to contrast and compare.  And then I play a short clip with Hob and Corey Eno Ruffin, the guy who did the new theme song for the show. Crunch Time ShowI got a note and a request from Wayne “Crunchie” Baglin, co-host of the Crunch Time Show (along with his wife The Scully), a podcast that looks at a myriad of geekiness, from games and movies to anything else that geeky nerdlings enjoy. They have a feature on the show called the "Random 5" where their showboard computer asks 5 random questions which you answer, then you get to ask one of your own. So Wayne asked if I’d play the Random 5 and here’s what happened… The Bonn & Obo ShowIt’s been a long time coming but Epi9 – NINE! – of the Bonn & Obo Show has finally dropped. It’s a pretty inventive show BUT, since Bonn and Obo seem to rarely – if ever – get along, it take awhile to get those shows out. This last one took a solid YEAR. Which is why Bonn moonlights on The Strange Times Show as well. In this clip, Obo has had enough disrespect from his mic mate, Bonn, and decides to file a complaint. Cashing In With TJ MillerHave you had a chance to catch Silicon Valley, the new Mike Judge comedy on HBO yet? Really funny, at least for those of us that live within spitting distance of the real Silicon Valley. And TJ Miller is one of the best parts of the show. He also can’t seem to showing up as a guest on the Cashing In podcast, which is probably why they’ve subtitled it With TJ Miller. Comedian Cash Levy hosts and TJ does what he does best, which is to wreak havoc. The Dork ForestJackie Kashian and her show The Dork Forest continues to root out the well-known and semi-well-known who are into sometime some obscure or even archaic stuff. This snippet comes from her Epi227 with guest Emily Gordon – co-host of the Indoor Kids with husband Kumail Nanjiani. Jackie and Emily chat about comedy and mental health. Center City ComedyA quintet of Philadelphia’s comedians - H. Foley, Kevin Ryan, Tom Cassidy, Reggie Conquest, and Andrew Schiavone – belly up to the mic and deliver up jokes, insults, and opinion about a variety of topics for Center City Comedy. The clip they sent in starts off about playing school basketball then sidetracks into a discussion about one of the guy’s long-lost classmates, a discussion which then disintegrates into unstoppable, contagious giggling. It's not unusual to hear a guest drop by Succotash – podcasters, comedians, actors, etc. – but occasionally I invite some in to be my guest co-host for an episode. We each pull clips from shows we want to share, then we present them to you…and each other, sometimes for the first time. For Epi64, I invited Monica Hamburg, co-host of the Dazed & Convicted podcast from Vancouver, Canada, to spin clips with me. We had a great time! Such a great time that this edition of Succotash clocked in as the longest epi for us ever - a few ticks over TWO hours! That's a lot of clips, and yakkin' and laughs. It's a sketch performed by co-host Bill Allman, Malox, and herself, revolving around a crime in Vancouver that revolved around - somehow - a bag of chips. Dining With Doug & Karen Normally the Karen in the title is comedian Karen Anderson. But she’s on “special assignment” as co-host Doug Benson puts it. So filling in is comedian Karen Kilgariff. Their guest comedian is Dave Anthony from Walking The Room and their guest chef is Shanna Lynn Milazzo from The Belmont in LA. This clip is less than 5 minutes but covers a range of topics – food, kids, pot, and a new sponsor whose viral video spurred Karen’s condition called Don’tClickOnIt-Itis. (Well, except for our running feature on Boganwood…) But last week, Hob The Troll (Steve Doccerson) sent us the wrong clip, which we then incorrectly identified. So we agreed to play the intended clip, featuring guest King John (The Thrilling Adventure Hour's Mark Gagliardi). It's a podcast. He's a troll. What more do you need to know? The Bi-Quarterly Women’s ClubThe hosts (and their tech guy) are four of the ugliest women I've seen, but that could be because they're dudes: Chris Wilding, Slako, Dylan, and Max. In this clip, they’re at the court, at the preliminary inquiry of “alleged” Canadian serial killer Luka Magnotta. Luka Magnotta fainted during the hearing. So when the trial paused for a bit, the BQWB used the break to interview people supporting not the victim, but the killer.  Kickin’ It Mary Lynn StyleHosted by comedian and actress Mary Lynn Rajskub who you should recognize from TV's 24 and also The Larry Sanders Show, has her own p'cast over on Nerdist. (Lucky Nerdist!) One guest a recent episode was actress Casey Wilson, who has a new movie coming out and who was recently on the ABC series Happy Endings. They get deep-ish into the subject of auditioning.  The New York City Crime Report with Pat DixonHosted by comedian Pat Dixon, along with producer Marcus Parks and guest Dave Rosinsky. As their website proclaims: “Crime might be down, but it sure isn’t out. This is the only podcast that gives you all the information on New York City crime, court and killers at large.” Lost Moon RadioLost Moon Radio features the sketch comedy group of the same name, out of Los Angeles. I played a clip from one of their first episodes and, I’m happy to report, they’re still funny! In this clip from Episode 8 entitled Hauntings, we catch up with a group of young campers on their closing night bonfire. Sarcastic Voyage The Sarcastic Voyage podcast is a biweekly endeavor by Ron “AAlgar” Watt, with Matt Rowbotham and a supporting cast of voice actors and contributing writers. It is largely comprised of prepared material (sketch comedy and comedic serials), which are linked by short “host segments." The clip Monica shares with us features the conversation between a couple of servants working the never-ending party at Jabba The Hutt's hideout. RISK!Kevin Allison hosts the weekly storytelling podcast “where people tell true stories they never thought they’d dare to share in public." Guest Julie Threlkeld tells the story of “Mom and the Bomb”. She begins by talking about the difficulty of coming as a teen as a lesbian to her mom, who didn’t approve (“You’re having sex with a woman?!”) Later on that same life, things got weird.
