It's the summer of ‘25 and we're heading to Syracuse, New York, in search of an act of reciprocal pleasure. In the Salt City, we discover the latest film from American High, a sultry and silly affair directed by Jillian Bell in her directorial debut, and written by Bell, Liz Nico, and Jules Byrne. When naive high school senior Abby vows to wow her crush Max by performing his favorite sex act, she needs the tutelage of stripper Santa Monica in order to do the deed and seal the  deal. Meanwhile, Santa Monica is staring down her own hairy scenario as ownership of her strip club dangles in front of her. Starring Abby Morelos, Chloe Fineman, Matt Cornett, Paula Pell, Natalie Morales, and Charlie Day, this flick premiered at SXSW back in March before being released by Hulu in May. But does this teen comedy satisfy our hosts equally? Or is it all risky business and no reward? We’re revisiting some of Alec’s favorite episodes from the archives. In this episode, originally recorded in November 2012, Alec talks with writer and actress Paula Pell – who made people laugh at Saturday Night Live for 18 years. Pell landed her dream job as a writer at SNL after working at a Florida theme park. Her agent told her that Lorne Michaels wanted to meet her – “it is not an audition, but he wants to fly you up and talk to you.” Pell wasn’t sure what she was headed up for, but she got a job writing for the show. Because of her longevity on the show, Pell calls herself “Nanny SNL,” but she’s the first to admit, “If you have a good night there you feel like you’re 20 again.” Today, Pell can be found writing and producing movies and television, in addition to her starring role in Peacock's “Girls5eva.”See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Paula Pell spent 18 years behind the scenes as a writer on Saturday Night Live. These days, you can see her on Girls5Eva–a sitcom about a 90s girl group that reunites today. She plays Gloria, the queer elder of the group making the most of their second wind. When she joined the show back in 2019, Pell starred in Wine Country alongside a few SNL legends. Pop Culture Happy Hour

The bingeable comedy series Girls5eva is a silly parody of the music industry. It's about four down-on-their-luck members of a 90s girl group who reunite to stage a comeback, and find that a lot has changed. The show features a stacked cast, including Sara Bareilles, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Busy Philipps, and Paula Pell. Girls5Eva recently moved to Netflix and just returned for a new season, so today, we revisit our conversation about the series.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

Despite never really doing comedy before ‘Girls5eva,' Renée Elise Goldsberry has managed to steal nearly every scene she's been in over the two seasons of that show's initial run on Peacock and third, which arrives with a splash on Netflix this week. In this episode, the Tony and Grammy Award winning actor reveals what it was like to find her comedic voice as the self-obsessed diva Wickie Roy, including how the character has inspired her to become more ambitious in her own career and the parallels between mastering Tina Fey's brand of rapid-fire jokes and learning to rap for her role as Angelica Schyuler in Lin-Manuel Miranda's ‘Hamilton.' Goldsberry talks about getting cut out of Fey and Amy Poehler's movie ‘Sisters,' meeting co-star Paula Pell in their musical episode ‘Documentary Now' and why she would be “shocked” if there wasn't a fourth season of ‘Girls5eva' coming to Netflix in the near future.
