Nato Green started hanging out at San Francisco comedy clubs when he was in eighth grade. Nato's parents met when they both still lived in the suburbs of Chicago. They got married in 1968 and moved to San Francisco soon after that. Nato says that they “were in the counter-culture, but bad at it.” What he means by that is they didn't take their subversive lifestyles all the way like many of their peers did. But they were definitely left-leaning folks. They settled in Noe Valley, which was quite a different neighborhood back then. It was much more working-class than it is today. Think: blue-collar Irish- and Italian-American families. They had their first kid, Nato, and five years later, their second, his younger brother. When Nato was in middle school, his parents split up. He went with his dad to live at 22nd Street and Dolores, and then up to Bernal Hill. He split time between there and his mom's house in Noe Valley. Nato is quick to point out that Bernal Heights was also very different back then. There were even unpaved roads on the hill when he was a kid in the Seventies. Today, Nato uses history and some pop-culture references to date his own memories here in San Francisco. He remembers things like the Mosone/Milk murders and ensuing “White Night” riots, to name just one. The Forty-Niners' string of Super Bowl wins in the Eighties are another. Nato admits that he wasn't the best big brother. He lists off some of the SF schools he attended—Rooftop Elementary, MLK Middle School, and Lick-Wilmerding High School, where he went on a scholarship. His dad worked to the SFUSD for 35 years and worked on desegregation, among other things. He also taught in SF public schools. Nato says he was a “sensitive, depressed kid.” He read a lot, especially comic books. He graduated from high school in 1993, when the local music scene was overtaken by thrash/funk. Bands of that genre were plenty. Nato went to those shows, where he was able to, anyway. He wasn't yet 21. The first indie comic book store in The City was on 23rd Street in the Mission—The SF Comic Company, and two doors down was Scott's Comics and Cards. Nato became a Scott's regular. Others who hung out there a lot became his buddies. The SF band Limbomaniacs lived next to Scott's. Nato goes on a sidebar here about how bands in the thrash/funk scene never really blew up, mostly owing to what a uniquely live experience the music was. In 1990, when the Niners won the Super Bowl in a blowout, the Limbomanics played with guitar amps at the windows of their Victorian on 23rd Street, facing out. As Nato tells it, skater kids poured out of that house, and other neighborhood kids flocked to the scene. A mosh pit soon emerged, of course, on the asphalt. Nato goes on another quick sidebar here about all the different neighborhoods and scenes interacting on a regular basis. At least when he grew up, they did. Nato's main modes of transportation in San Francisco were his feet and Muni. The main bus lines were the 24, the 49, and the 67. His high school was on Ocean Avenue, but he mostly hung out in the Mission. One of his good friends lived in Lower Haight and had a car, so Nato would sometimes take Muni over there. That buddy with a car would also swing by and pick up Nato and his friends. They'd often go to the west side of town and hang out in coffeeshops. Nato rattles off several of those shops, also letting us what occupies those spaces today—Farley's (still there), Higher Grounds in Glen Park (still there), Higher Grounds in The Mission (closed), Café Macondo (Gestalt today), Blue Danube (still there), and the Horse Shoe (empty today). There's another sidebar about Jello Biafra. Nato says, “Don't meet your heroes.” As mentioned up top, he started hanging out at comedy clubs in The City when he was in eighth grade. There was a show on KQED called Comedy Tonight that featured local comics. Originally, the show was shot at Wolfgang's (now Cobb's), but it later moved to Great American Music Hall. Alex Bennet was on Live 105 in the morning and Comedy in the Park was drawing 50,000 people to the Polo Fields. There were five seven-nights-a-week clubs in SF, and at least five more around the Bay. People made a living as regional headliners. Around this time, Nato's eighth grade science teacher's roommate was the doorman at Cobb's. Word got around to that guy that a kid was into comedy, and so he started taking him to that club. He saw comedians such as Greg Proops, Dana Gould, Paula Poundstone, Mark Pitta, Johnny Steele, Will Durst, Greg Behrendt, and Margaret Cho. He watched these folks, some of them anyway, become headliners. Check back next week for Part 2 and the conclusion of our episode on Nato Green. We recorded this episode at Nato's home on Bernal Hill in January 2025. Photography by Nate Oliveira

This episode is Ariel's third on empowered dating. Do you need to know what you're looking for? Do you want to get clarity? Do you want to learn about different dating choices? Have you done monogamy or vanilla relationships and what to try something else? Ariel talks about these things but be warned, some of the content and conversations might be triggering if you're used to a very conservative dating lifestyle. Clear negative energy connections you experience while dating with Ariel's Violet Flame Relationship Clearing Practice. Ariel uses this and other energy medicine tools to clear negative cording attachments. If you share this tool, please acknowledge me as its creator, especially if you do this on social media or in writing. Violet Flame Relationship Clearing by Ariel F. Hubbard, www.arielhubbard.com I am, I am, I am a Sovereign Being. I choose the energies that are in my field. I choose the energies of Peace, Light, and Unconditional Love, and so it is. (Say or think the name of the person you are releasing 3 times) At this time, I choose to release my energy from your field Bringing it back to me through the Violet Flame Where it is cleansed, blessed and purified. I reclaim my life force energy and my power. And so it is. Notice whether you feel a release physically, energetically, emotionally or spiritually. (Say or think their name 3 times) At this time, I choose to release your energy from my field Sending it back to you through the Violet Flame Where it is cleansed, blessed and purified. To do with as you will. I release it to you with love. And so it is. Notice whether you feel a release physically, energetically, emotionally or spiritually. After which process did you feel more of a shift? That will indicate where there was a stronger cording attachment. You may need to do this several times if the cording is strong. Some people may seek to re-engage with you once you have released cording—be prepared and stay disengaged. Or re-engage, but in a way that honours your boundaries. Urban Dictionary is an app to help you understand current slang Ariel's upcoming book is The Empowered Woman's Guide to Online Dating (see pre-order link, below.) He's Just Not That into You, by Greg Behrendt and Liz Tuccillo Situationships as a form of dating: https://apple.news/AMjIIFDO5St2EQ2Jxc9XFew For more information on Tantra, see Sexual Secrets by Nik Douglas and Penny Slinger. This is a classic, extensively researched, seminal tantric text based on primary source research translated from Chinese, Japanese and Sanskrit by the authors. Urban Tantra by Barbara Carrellas gives practical exercises for people to connect with tantric energy. KEY TAKEAWAYS Women are the essence and expression of the divine feminine archetype and there are a lot of expressions of that. And yes, everyone has masculine and feminine energy inside of them, but women are the essence of the feminine. There are different types of archetypes: the maiden, the mother, the crone, the creator, the sex goddess, wise women. You have those qualities within you whether you're sweet and kind or criticising or manifesting and men, whether they're aware of it or not, are attracted to your sexual and spiritual energy. When you fate online men are trying to access this energy and they often do it by asking sexual questions. There are three groups of men: Men who want casual sex, men who want relationships, and guys who don't know what they want – these aren't guys you want to waste your time on. Cross those people off your list, your time is precious. The men who want quick access to your sexual energy are taking shortcuts by skipping dating steps. If it makes you feel nervous or afraid that's because it's not safe because they haven't taken the time or effort to build up trust. Once we're older and we exit a relationship (long- or short-term), it leaves us wondering what's important in life. You may have wondered if all the effort you put into your past relationships was worth it, or you might feel that you didn't get what you were looking for, or you might want something totally different. Give yourself permission to open yourself up to different possibilities. Life now is different to life in your teens and twenties and your desires and needs are different as well. Most people have grown up experiencing vanilla sex or relationships and they get into a rut where they do the same kinds of behaviours over and over again. They expect their partner to be monogamous and they may rarely or never actually talk about sex or their fantasies. This is one of the many reasons why relationships end. Men and some women do want variety and sometimes they get bored of the same persona and the same actions over and over again, not just sex but relationship actions too. BEST MOMENTS “Men have the spiritual energy of being a director or a builder, women are creators and gestators of ideas and men take and direct the energy that the feminine gives them and make it come into physical existence.”“If you're looking for casual sex, you need to be treated with respect with that even.”“Just because you might have been monogamous for years does not mean you have to have the same kind of sex or relationship life you had before. This is an ideal time to look at and explore other options.”“Kinks are a way of experiencing sexuality or arousal from something that's not normally considered sexual or sexy. Tantra is a way of working with sacred sexual energy (with yourself or a partner) to open up kundalini flow and your chakras to expand your spiritual consciousness.” ABOUT THE HOST Ariel is a Licensed Massage Therapist, Registered Clinical Hypnotherapist, Reiki Master, Empath and Psychic who has been involved in holistic healing since 1988. Flashback Episode of The Father Time Podcast with Jamie KalerOne of the best things about doing this podcast is reaching out to some of my favorite comics/dads to come chat. And this week's one. Greg Behrendt is most notable for being a best selling author of the national phenomenon, "She's Just Not That Into You" which became a movie of the same name. He was a consultant on "Sex and the City" and "Committed", and he's done stand up on almost every late night show including The Tonight Show, Conan, and The Colbert Report. He even had his own talk show called, you guessed it, "The Greg Behrendt Show" . When I first moved to Los Angeles, he was one of the crushers that you would see around town at Largo, UnCabaret and all the other packed shows where the best comics in town would just destroy. I LOVED his act. He would kill. So glad he brought his brand of humor to Father Time. He's a great dad and really funny. Hope you enjoy! You can catch more of Greg Behrendt at: https://stevetrevino.com/On Instagram at:https://www.instagram.com/itsgreggers/https://gregorybehrendt.com/You can catch The Parent's Lounge live every Tuesday Night 10pm EST/7pm PST at:https://www.facebook.com/theparentslounge#theparentslounge #gregbehrendt #hesjustnotthatintoyou #comedycentral #parentingpodcast #jamiekaler #jasongowin #katemulligan #comedians #parentingadvice #funnyparents #hilarious #cohosts #Itscalledabreakupbecauseitsbroken #tiktokcomedy #marriageadvice #dadlife #standupcomedy #parentinghumorJamie Kaler's Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/jamiekaler/Jason Gowin's Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/jasongowin/Kate Mulligan's Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/katestmomever/The Parent's Lounge TikTok - https://www.tiktok.com/@theparentsloungeshowTags: The Parent's LoungeDadpocalypseThe DadlandsFather Time
