This week Corporal, Sarcastro, Fatty, and Banky each fantasize about what their top five bands or artists (living or dead) that they could see at a festival would be. Intro and Outro music written and performed by Andrés Rodríguez (Androzguitar).
Our guest this week was Documentary Filmmaker Sandi DuBowski. Sandi's latest production "Sabbath Queen" was in the works for 21 years and it's not only taken film festivals around the world like Tribeca, IDFA Best of Fests, DOK Leipzig, Rio Film Festival, Palm Springs, Woodstock, Hamptons, Zurich, and Berkeley by storm but it continues its global tour with select theatrical runs and film festival screenings. Here's the film's website complete with trailer and screening times https://www.sabbathqueen.com/To obtain the Zoom link for upcoming live interviews, you must register at The Filmmaker's Life webpage at https://www.filmmakersuccess.com/the-filmmakers-life-homeSandi DuBowski began his foray into media work back in the 1990s with Planned Parenthood. Since then, his award-winning films have screened at Sundance, Berlin, Tribeca and Toronto, theatrically released in 150 cities, and broadcast on ZDF/Arte, BBC, Channel 4, PBS. He's the Director/Producer of "Sabbath Queen" and "Trembling Before G-D", Producer of "A Jihad for Love" and Co-Producer of "Budrus". From 2009-2016, DuBowski worked with over 125 of the world's best social justice documentaries as the Outreach Director of Doc Society's Good Pitch. Alle.
The greatest day of the year is HERE! Chaos ensues as the 2025 lineup is finally revealed and we're here to break it all down. From our favorite acts, snubs, disappointments and more, come with us on a journey throught the BEST slate of music in the country.
An Episode with Ye Olde Charm! Here's what's to come in this episode: * In this episode, Matt and Angela dive into why Renaissance Faires feel innately autistic and explore how the art of LARPing offers a unique twist on masking—where choosing your own character and setting clear expectations can actually work for autistic folks.* Matt and Angela dive into how events like Ren Faires and concerts—though they might seem like sensory overload for autistic folks—can actually be a sensory delight, offering the freedom to "choose your own adventure" and control the level of sensory input.* Additionally, Renaissance Faires and historical reenactments tap into the concept of stimming by recreating the same rituals and experiences in a consistent, familiar way over and over again.* Our hosts explore why Renaissance Fests offer autistic folks a safe space to unmask, stim, embrace echolalia or non-speaking communication (whatever feels right!), set their own structure and rules, build careers around their special interests, and truly let their authentic selves shine.“If you are unhappy in your job and you have a special interest, I promise you there is some way to make that into a career. God knows what way, but there is a way.” - Angela“It's the difference between being in the shower and being hit by a water gun. Because the water gun might be even less water than you're getting in the shower, but you choose the time, you choose the place, you choose the intensity, you choose the temperature. ” - Matt“Before the word ‘autism' was ever uttered, you knew what kind of person would go out to the Gettysburg battlefield and dress up and have prop replicas and all these genuine replicas and have these, you know, historically accurate costumes they made themselves.” - AngelaDid you notice the connection between Renaissance Faires and the autistic experience? J.R., Josh and myself sit around my kitchen table on a cold winter night in Alabama to discuss the evolution of the Camp Sammich, and a few snore fests that we have held throughout the years. Come along and see what mischief we dredge up in this episode.
We are back once again, this time to reminisce about metal fests we've attended, compare notes on fests we would like to attend, and look forward to fests we will attend in the future. What are our favorite festivals, and our favorite festival experiences? What makes a good festival and what lead to the popularity of fests in America and Europe? Which festivals are run the best, which ones have access to the best food? We talk about indoor versus outdoor festivals and share stories of our festival experiences at Roadburn, Northwest Terror Fest, Wacken, Milwaukee Metal Fest, Maryland Death Fest, Migration Fest, Party San, and more. As usual we do a couple of segments to wrap up the show, plead for listener emails, and beg for purchases on the webstore. -------------------- Hosts: Jason Walton and Nick Wusz. William Sarradet talks with Houston's Sarah Welch and Fort Worth's Raul Rodriguez about the nature of zine festivals and the landscape of self-publishing in Texas. "I think being in Texas has actually put us at a good advantage for doing self-publishing work because there are so many major cities in the state...We've done some out of state stuff, but I think the events we do in Texas are often the highest quality." See related readings here: https://glasstire.com/2023/12/03/art-dirt-looking-at-zine-fests-and-self-publishing-in-texas This week's podcast is sponsored in part by the Houston Museum of African American Culture and their annual museum fundraiser and art auction, Champagne and Ribs, which is happening December 14 in Houston. The auction features works by internationally recognized artists Evita Tezeno, David McGee, Floyd Newsum, Johnny Floyd, and others. Your bid not only gets you an incredible work of art, but also goes a long way in sustaining the Houston Museum of African American Culture. The museum will be open during the week of December 3, from Tuesday to Saturday, 11a.m. - 6 p.m. to preview the auction and purchase Champagne & Ribs tickets online or in person. When we talk about what they appreciate about beer, it's not uncommon to hear them mention the people; the “community.” And in a very tangible way, there are few examples for how this appears than at a beer festival. All over the country, almost all year-round, you can find examples of packed event halls, convention centers, and even parking lots where enthusiasts and novices alike mill about, sampling different beers. But more recently - and certainly partially because of the COVID pandemic - these festivals have hit a rough patch. For some of the most prominent beer fests, interest isn't as high as it used to be and ticket sales are just a little tougher. In Canada, the annual Windsor Craft Beer Festival was canceled due to lagging sales while it easily sold out during its heydays of the mid-2010s. Similarly, The Oregon Brewers Festival was canceled this year after organizers shared that higher costs, lower attendance, and extreme weather were making it harder to stay a successful event. Last year, the Great American Beer Festival cut its ticket numbers by 20,000 across multiple sessions after years of more challenging sales. So what is the state of these special events? Let's dive into it with Sightlines reporter Kate Bernot…

The Mincing Rascals cover the top topics in the news, local and national, every week.
Nick is joined by film critics Erik Childress and Steve Prokopy for a lively chat about the 10th annual Chicago Critics Film Festival at The Music Box Theatre. They discuss the exciting lineup of new movie screenings and a special 35mm presentation of "The Right Stuff" on the big screen. They also give their take on some fresh releases, including the delightful adaptation of Judy Blume's classic novel, "Are You There God? It's Me Margaret." Later, Esmeralda Leon and Nick share amusing stories about Porter, the deaf dog Esma hangs out with, and her adventure in learning dog sign language to communicate with him. To top it all off, they vent their frustrations with Google Maps and take a nostalgic trip reminiscing about Indiana Beach, Disney World, and the unforgettable Frank 'N' Stein's, where hot dogs and beers are served by the iconic Frankenstein monster.
