Baseball and music lovers come together each year for the "Hot Stove Cool Music" benefit concert, which raises money for underserved youth through the Foundation To Be Named Later. It's a brainchild of baseball writers Jeff Horrigan and Peter Gammons, with a nod to the sport they love. This year, the event is celebrating its 25th anniversary with some epic guests. Former Red Sox pitcher Lenny DiNardo, now a sports analyst at NESN, is co-hosting this year's event. He joins Nichole this week to share all the cool details about this hot event.
This episode will explore a different avenue involving Pearl Jam outside of their live shows. As many know, multiple members of the band are considered avid fans of baseball - most notably Eddie Vedder. From shows in legendary ballparks such as Wrigley Field and Fenway Park, to their music that's been provided as a soundtrack to the game over the years, there are about a hundred different connections that you can make with the band and the game. On the eve of Opening Day, we'll dig deep into what makes Pearl Jam and baseball the perfect match, from drawing a parallel line to the fandoms and exploring Ed's history as a rockstar ambassador to the game. Listen in as we'll have a great conversation with long time acclaimed baseball writer, Peter Gammons. Peter has been long known for his affinity for both fandoms, and we'll get to talking with him about the Hot Stove Cool Music benefit, playing on stage alongside Bernie Williams and his personal hero Buddy Guy, his relationship with Eddie, some of his favorite Pearl Jam lyrics and how they connect to baseball, Fenway Park as a music venue, and he'll even share some of his bold predictions for the upcoming 2025 season. It's a can't miss interview, make sure you tune in! We'll also talk to a panel of great friends who share passions for both the band and the game, and we'll share a lot of stories about ballpark shows and experiences. We have fan representation for the Mets, Cubs, Phillies, Red Sox, Yankees, Padres and Braves, and somehow we all made it out alive! We also put together our favorite Pearl Jam live moments that incorporate baseball, so you won't want to miss it! This one is for all you baseball fans. Josh Kantor is a former Chicago resident and current organist for the Boston Red Sox. CHIRP DJ and Features contributor Mike Nikolich caught up with Josh to talk about the saga that resulted in him becoming the owner of Nacy Faust's organ, an instrument that she used to delight White Sox fans for many many years. The story starts with an auction and culminates in a cross-country tour featuring Kelly Hogan of the Decemberists, Max Crawford of Poi Dog Pondering and Robbie Fulks player Gerald Dowd. Also in this interview, Mike and Josh cover Josh's work with Hot Stove Cool Music and his many rock band side projects. "Keep the repertoire current, keep updating, keep learning the new pop songs, it's more work than just kind of sticking to what you already know. But it's well worth it." - Josh Kantor Produced by Mike Nikolich Image: Adam Glanzman
Freda Love Smith is retiring. She's an indie-rock icon who's been in more bands than you've had hot meals. Her first band —the fabled Blake Babies— helped define the late ‘80s/early ‘90s Boston music scene. Her tight, multi-faceted style of drumming evokes everyone from Moe Tucker to Ringo Starr. But that part of her life is about to end in a little over a month when —due to a variety of reasons— she'll pick up her sticks for the final time when she performs at the long running Hot Stove Cool Music benefit at the Metro. At least that's what SHE says. Time will tell. Regardless — she'll always be cool. On this episode we talk to Freda about “Breaking Away”, moving to Boston, the first time she quit music, macrobiotic cults, Mysteries Of Life, living in a hobbit hole, Some Girls, her foodie/rock memoir “Red Velvet Underground”, her forthcoming book about Angela Atwood, Scott yammers on about “Network”, Jane Pauley, Sunshine Boys, and Freda is retiring.
The Hot Stove Cool Music concert is back in Boston. WBZ's Drew Moholland has more.

What is a Jamoke? Is a chump a jamoke? We really have no idea. But we love the question and will begin using the word Jamoke on a regular basis. These are the deep questions we dove into when talking with Jennifer D’Angora and Ed Valauskas. Plymouth native Jennifer D’Angora, also known as Jenny Dee, has been on the Boston music scene long enough to be in more bands than we can count. The Dents, Jenny Dee and the Deelinquents, The Downbeat 5, and the fantastic group of musicians that make up the equally fantastic Band of Their Own which performs mainly to support Hot Stove Cool Music, the annual benefit show supporting the Foundation to be Named Later.Ed Valauskas is the studio manager of the infamous Q Division studios. Ed’s also an accomplished producer and bassist. He plays bass in The Gravel Pit, The Gentlemen, Jenny Dee & The Deelinquents, Abbie Barrett & The Last Date, The Prenups, and far too many other bands to count. Chances are if you are a regular on the live music scene in Boston, one of these two musicians and great people were on the stage. These are also only our second married couple to have on ATB. We’ll let you listen to find out the first.

About a year ago we had the great opportunity to speak with Baseball Writer’s hall of famer and longtime musician Mr. Peter Gammons at his annual event celebrating the Peter Gammons College Scholarship. This scholarship, which allows Boston and Chicago area high school students a cash scholarship to the college of their choice has sent 150 Boston and Chicago area students to college by awarding them over $600,000 in scholarships. But this wonderful foundation is only one piece of the puzzle – just one beneficiary of many in Boston and Chicago under the umbrella of the Foundation To Be Named Later. After Theo Epstein became the general manager of the Red Sox in 2002, being a guitar player himself, Peter Gammons asked Theo to join him onstage for the next Hot Stove event. And so the Foundation to be named later was born. The foundation – now celebrating its 20thyear, is dedicated to improving lives through education and leadership and works to raise funds and awareness for nonprofit agencies serving urban youth and families. Funds would be raised through unique events focused on baseball and music, two of the twins’ passions. This years events begin February 7th. The Cubs are banged up, and their record reflects that. Luckily, the teams in the NL Central have been beating up on each other, so at this early juncture in the season, it's still anybody's division. More on that as the week progresses. Most importantly this week, there are some VIP packages available to this year's Hot Stove Cool Music concert benefiting The Foundation To Be Named Later... TWIN PEAKS! You may remember them from such XRT events as last year's Holiday Concert For The Kids at Thalia Hall, the 2016 Opening Day Live Broadcast, and this season's Len & Lin theme song! t
Earlier in the week, Len shared some stories about the Boston edition of the Hot Stove Cool Music concert benefiting Theo Epstein's Foundation To Be Named Later. The World Series trophy took a turn crowd surfing around the room. Theo literally went head over heels whilst jamming on guitar alongside Eddie Vedder and Len Kasper. In years past, Cheap Trick, the aforementioned Eddie Vedder, Liz Phair, Tom Morello and Smashing Pumpkins have participated. Who'll show up on June 2nd at Metro? Oh don't worry, this event always sells out, and quickly. Tickets go on sale Saturday, May 6th at noon, so get on it! Wrigley East, or as it's commonly known as, Fenway Park, was the scene for Kris Bryant's moon shot over the Green Monster in his very first Fenway at-bat. Unfortunately, the Cubs couldn't capitalize, taking only one of three from the Red Sox. Hot Stove Cool Music however, DID capitalize, with Len Kasper joining Eddie Vedder and Theo Epstein in renditions of Neil Young and The Who while raising over $750k for children's charities. Keep an eye in this section of 93xrt.com and an ear on WXRT for details on the Chicago edition of Hot Stove Cool Music coming soon!
