Anthony Franco joins Darragh McDonald to discuss Jose Quintana signing with the Brewers, how Luis Gil's injury opens up a spot for Marcus Stroman in the Yankees' rotation, and Jordan Montgomery seemingly set to start the season in the Diamondbacks' bullpen. Listener question topics include whether the Nationals will start spending more now that their TV dispute has been sorted out, the likelihood of a salary floor being instituted in the future, the chances of Luis Robert Jr. getting traded before the season starts, whether Paul Skenes or Elly De La Cruz would be more likely to sign an extension, how bad the White Sox will be, if Jeff McNeil could get traded to make room for a prospect, if the Tigers could acquire an outfield bat now that they are dealing with some injuries, what improvements can be expected from Mariners' veterans who struggled last year, the chances that David Bote will make the Dodgers' roster, and the odds of MLB expanding by more than two teams.

In this episode, I dive deep into the current state of the Cubs, focusing heavily on Kyle Hendricks, his career, and what might be his final days with the team. I start by reflecting on the Cubs' season, highlighting their ups and downs, and the precarious position they find themselves in as they fight to stay above .500 and keep their playoff hopes alive. I discuss the critical role Kyle Hendricks has played over the years, from his iconic performances in the 2016 postseason to his steady presence on the mound. Despite his struggles this season, I emphasize the respect and admiration I have for him and why it's essential for the Cubs to find a graceful exit for him, allowing him to retire on a high note, ideally as a Cub for life. Additionally, I talk about the team's recent roster moves, including the departures of Hector Naras and David Bote, and the uncertain future of other players like Drew Smyly. I touch on the financial aspects of the team, especially regarding the Competitive Balance Tax (CBT), and how the Cubs are navigating the fine line of trying to win now while also planning for the future. I also explore the potential September call-ups, focusing on young talents like Jordan Wicks, Brandon Birdsell, and position players like Owen Caissie and Moises Ballesteros. These players represent the future of the Cubs, and I speculate on who might get a shot at the majors as the season winds down. Throughout the episode, I weave in personal anecdotes, including how Kyle Hendricks has been a significant figure in my baseball journey, both as a fan and as a father watching my son develop as a pitcher. This episode is as much about baseball as it is about the emotions and memories tied to being a Cubs fan. Finally, I look ahead to the crucial upcoming games against the Nationals, Yankees, and Dodgers, and what the Cubs need to do to keep their playoff hopes alive. It's a time of trying while not fully trying, a delicate balance that will define the rest of the season. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

MLB – Major League Baseball Last Night Detroit Tigers 3, Baltimore Orioles 2 Cleveland Guardians 10, Chicago White Sox 7 – 11 Innings Chicago Cubs 2, Miami Marlins 1 Tigers 3, Orioles 2 – Wentz sharp for Tigers in 3-2 victory over Baltimore Joey Wentz took a shutout into the sixth inning and Akil Baddoo and Kerry Carpenter homered to lift the Detroit Tigers to a 3-2 victory over the fading Baltimore Orioles. Wentz allowed two hits and two walks in 5 2/3 innings. It was the third time in five big league starts that the rookie has held the opposition scoreless. Baddoo’s 448-foot home run in the third opened the scoring, bringing home two runs. Carpenter added a solo shot in the seventh. Rookie standout Gunnar Henderson hit a two-run homer in the seventh for Baltimore’s first runs of the series. The Tigers routed the Orioles 11-0 the previous night. Guardians 10, White Sox 7 – F/11 – Straw leads Guardians to 10-7 win over White Sox in 11 Myles Straw had a tiebreaking two-run double in Cleveland’s five-run 11th inning, and the Guardians beat the Chicago White Sox 10-7 to move closer to the American League Central title. The Guardians won for the 12th time in 16 extra-inning games this season and expanded their lead to five games over the White Sox. Straw got his go-ahead hit off Jake Diekman (5-4), and Steven Kwan followed with his fourth hit — an RBI single — to score Straw. Kwan scored on Jose Ramirez’s sacrifice fly, and a throwing error by Chicago catcher Seby Zavala allowed Amed Rosario to score with another run. Emmanuel Clase (3-4) earned the win after his fourth blown save in 40 chances in the 10th. Cubs 2, Marlins 1 – Bote drives in both runs, Cubs edge Marlins 2-1 David Bote hit a tying home run in the seventh inning, then added a sacrifice fly in the eighth that lifted the Chicago Cubs over the Miami Marlins 2-1. Esteban Quiroz got the first two hits of his major league career and P.J. Higgins also had two hits for the Cubs, who snapped a three-game losing skid. The 30-year-old Quiroz was promoted from Triple-A Saturday. Chicago loaded the bases with no outs without a hit in the eighth against reliever Steven Okert. Michael Hermosillo was hit by a pitch and Zach McKinstry reached on a sacrifice bunt when catcher Jacob Stallings threw late to second. Quiroz had a bunt single and Bote hit a go-ahead flyball. Tonight Chicago Cubs (Stroman 4-7) at Miami (Luzardo 3-7), 6:40 p.m. Detroit (Manning 2-2) at Baltimore (Lyles 10-11), 7:05 p.m.       WSJM/WCSY 6:45 Cleveland (McKenzie 10-11) at Chicago White Sox (Lynn 7-5), 8:10 p.m. COVID-19/Sports – Official: Canada likely to drop vaccine requirement to enter An official familiar with the matter says Canada will likely drop the vaccine requirement for people who enter Canada by the end of September. Canada is similar to the United States in that it requires non-citizens to be vaccinated when entering the country. It is not immediately known whether the U.S. will make a similar move by Sept. 30. The official says that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau needs to give final sign off on the decision but that the government will likely be dropping the requirement as well ending random COVID testing at airports. Filling out information in the unpopular ArriveCan app will also no longer be required. LLWS – Family sues Little League over bunk bed fall, head injury A Utah boy who suffered a serious head injury after falling from a bunk bed during last month’s Little League World Series has returned home from the hospital, and his family is suing the league and the company that made the bed. The family’s lawyer said Tuesday that 12-year-old Easton Oliverson has undergone three brain operations and is now experiencing seizures. He said the boy fell in his sleep on Aug. 15. The lawsuit accuses Little League International and Savoy Contract Furniture of Williamsport of negligence for using or selling bunk beds without safety railings. A Little League spokesperson declined comment, and the furnituremaker did not immediately respond to messages seeking comment. NFL – Bills CB Dane Jackson avoids major injury, out of hospital Buffalo Bills cornerback Dane Jackson was released from the hospital after tests revealed he sustained no major injury to his neck or spinal cord when he was struck by a teammate. The Bills also revealed Tuesday that safety Micah Hyde was sent to the hospital for tests after he was carted off the field with his own neck injury later in Monday night’s win over Tennessee. Hyde is also out of the hospital. Jackson’s injury was considered to be more serious. He was driven off the field in an ambulance. Later Tuesday, he was back at the Bills’ facility for treatment.. NFL – Sunday, Monday football games fight for ratings supremacy As often happens, NBC’s ‘Sunday Night Football’ game won the week’s rating competition, but the Chicago-Green Bay game had a tough battle with the revamped “Monday Night Football” game. That game, between Denver and Seattle, was seen by nearly 10.3 million on ABC and another 8 million people when it was simulcast on ESPN. CBS’ “60 Minutes” was the most popular non-football game on TV, with its season debut featuring an interview with President Joe Biden reaching 10.2 million people. During a week when broadcast networks mostly had one last week of reruns in preparation for starting the fall TV season, NBC’s summer hit “America’s Got Talent” had its swan song. NFL – Fan arrested for allegedly throwing bottle at Browns owner A fan was arrested for allegedly throwing a plastic water bottle and hitting Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslam during the closing moments of Sunday’s 31-30 home loss to the New York Jets. Cleveland police say 51-year-old Jeffrey Miller of Rocky River was charged with assault, disorderly conduct and failure to comply. Miller was spotted by video surveillance throwing the bottle and was followed with cameras. After the Jets took the lead, a video showed Haslam walking toward the tunnel in FirstEnergy Stadium when he was struck by the projectile. A person familiar with Browns’ decision says the team intends to ban Miller from the stadium. NHL – AP source: MacKinnon signs 8-year deal, highest paid in NHL The Colorado Avalanche are making Nathan MacKinnon the highest-paid player in the NHL’s salary cap era. The 27-year-old signed an eight-year contract that is worth $100.8 million, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Tuesday because the team did not announce terms of the contract. His new $12.6 million salary cap hit that goes into effect at the start of the 2023-24 season surpasses Connor McDavid’s $12.5 million as the highest in the league. NHL – Longtime NHL defenseman Zdeno Chara, 45, retires as a Bruin Zdeno Chara has announced his retirement after playing 24 NHL seasons and captaining the Boston Bruins to the Stanley Cup in 2011. The 6-foot-9 defenseman from Slovakia is calling it a career at age 45. He returned to Boston to make that announcement two years after splitting with the Bruins following 14 seasons. Chara won the Norris Trophy as the league’s top defenseman in 2009 and also spent time with the New York Islanders, Ottawa Senators and Washington Capitals. He’s a candidate for the Hockey Hall of Fame based not only on his consistency through 1,880 regular-season games but also his stature in the game from Slovakia to North America. Golf – US guarding against overconfidence in Presidents Cup The Americans are big favorites in the Presidents Cup. And it might be a matter of protecting against overconfidence. Captain Davis Love III doesn’t see that as an issue. He mentions all the winning photos of past U.S. teams and how this group wants to be in the next picture. Loves says this 12-man squad doesn’t have a record because it has never played together. International captain Trevor Immelman looks forward to what he sees as an uphill battle. He lost a lot of players to LIV Golf. But he likes the 12 who have rallied around the underdog label. Tennis – Roger Federer to discuss his retirement on Wednesday Roger Federer’s farewell news conference will come before what he has said will be the last competitive tennis event of his career. Federer will meet with the media Wednesday to discuss walking away from the game at age 41 after 20 Grand Slam titles. Federer is in London and has been practicing at the arena that will host the indoor hard-court matches for the Laver Cup. The event founded by his management team begins Friday with the fifth edition of its Team Europe vs. Team World format. The main rivals whose careers overlapped with Federer’s also are participating: Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray. MLB – Major League Baseball Last Night Houston Astros 6, Detroit Tigers 3 Chicago Cubs 4, New York Mets 1 Chicago White Sox 4, Colorado Rockies 2 Astros 6, Tigers 3 – Astros’ Brown hurls 6 strong innings to beat hometown Tigers Rookie Hunter Brown pitched six strong innings in his hometown and the Houston Astros beat the Detroit Tigers 6-3 on Tuesday. Yordan Alvarez homered and scored three times for the Astros, who are 6-0 against the Tigers this season. Brown allowed two runs. Brown made his second career start in front of a loud group of friends and family. He grew up in suburban Detroit and attended Wayne State, about a mile from Comerica Park. Ryan Pressly struck out the side in the ninth for his 27th save. Tigers starter Drew Hutchison allowed four runs in 5 1/3 innings. White Sox 4, Rockies 2 – Jiménez, Abreu homer as surging White Sox beat Rockies 4-2 Eloy Jiménez hit a three-run homer and Miguel Cairo directed the Chicago White Sox to another victory, topping the Colorado Rockies 4-2. Michael Kopech pitched five effective innings as Chicago remained three games back of AL Central-leading Cleveland, which rallied for a 3-1 win against the Los Angeles Angels. José Abreu also went deep, and Liam Hendriks handled the ninth for his 33rd save. The White Sox improved to 10-4 since Cairo moved from bench coach to acting manager after Tony La Russa stepped away to deal with a heart issue. Cubs 4, Mets 1 – Mets come up empty for deGrom and lose to Cubs again, 4-1 Jacob deGrom was outpitched by journeyman Adrian Sampson, and the frustrated New York Mets mustered little offense again in a 4-1 loss to the Chicago Cubs. Ian Happ homered deep into the second deck on a 99 mph heater from deGrom, and No. 9 batter David Bote added his second home run of the season for the Cubs, who won the series opener 5-2 on Monday. One night later, the scuffling Mets squandered another potential chance to increase their slim NL East lead over Atlanta, which played later in San Francisco. New York is 5-6 in a 16-game stretch against Washington, Pittsburgh, Miami and Chicago — all four of those teams are more than 20 games under .500 this season. Pete Alonso homered late for the Mets. Today Houston (Javier 8-9) at Detroit (Wentz 1-1), 1:10 p.m.               WSJM/WCSY 12:50 Colorado (Freeland 8-9) at Chicago White Sox (Cease 14-6), 2:10 p.m. Chicago Cubs (Smyly 6-8) at N.Y. Mets (Peterson 7-4), 7:10 p.m. MLB – Still no timetable for La Russa’s return to White Sox dugout The White Sox say manager Tony La Russa will watch the team’s home series against Colorado from a suite while he awaits clearance to return to the dugout. The 77-year-old La Russa is on the mend after leaving the White Sox on Aug. 30 to deal with a heart issue. La Russa rejoined the team in Oakland on Sunday and then flew home with the club for the two-game set against the Rockies. There is no timetable for the Hall of Famer when it comes to returning to the stress of in-game managing. Chicago begins a four-game trip on Thursday in Cleveland. NFL – Preseason rest led to Week 1 rust for several top QBs Preseason rest appeared to lead to a little bit of rust in Week 1 for several of the NFL’s top quarterbacks. More than one-third of the league’s Week 1 starting quarterbacks didn’t play a single snap in the preseason and most of those 11 QBs didn’t play anywhere close to their usual form. Whether the poor results were a result of rust or other factors isn’t clear but the poor results are. The only QBs to rest the entire preseason and end up on the winning side in Week 1 were Minnesota’s Kirk Cousins, Justin Herbert of the Chargers and Baltimore’s Lamar Jackson. NFL – Amazon Prime ready to kick off ‘Thursday Night Football’ Thursday night’s game between the Los Angeles Chargers and Kansas City Chiefs on Prime Video kicks off an 11-year agreement between Amazon and the NFL and marks the first time the league has sold a package of games to a streaming service. Amazon won the rights to the prime-time package last March. It was originally supposed to begin in 2023, along with the rest of the league’s broadcasting contracts, but two months later it was announced that Amazon would take over the Thursday night package from Fox a year earlier. WNBA – WNBA Playoffs – WNBA Finals (best of 5) Last Night Las Vegas Aces 85, Connecticut Sun 71                                      (LV leads 2-0) Aces 85, Sun 71 – Aces beat Sun 85-71, take 2-0 series lead in WNBA Finals A’ja Wilson had 26 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Las Vegas Aces to an 85-71 victory over the Connecticut Sun in Game 2 of the WNBA Finals. The Aces are now one victory away from the franchise’s first championship with Game 3 on Thursday in Connecticut. Las Vegas was swept in the 2008 Finals when the team was still in San Antonio. The Aces were also swept in 2020. Chelsea Gray added 21 for the Aces while Kelsey Plum rebounded from an awful Game 1 to score 20 points. Courtney Williams scored 18 points to lead Connecticut. WNBA – Richardson visits Moscow as Griner, Whelan remain jailed Bill Richardson, who has worked to secure the releases of WNBA star Brittney Griner and another jailed American, Paul Whelan, visited Moscow this week and held meetings with Russian leaders. That’s according to a person familiar with the matter who spoke to The Associated Press on Tuesday night. Richardson is a former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations and a frequent emissary in hostage negotiations. American officials have continued to press Russia to release Griner, who was sentenced last month to nine years in prison in a drug possession case, and Whelan, a Michigan corporate security executive serving a 16-year sentence on espionage-related charges. The U.S. government regards both as wrongfully detained. NBA/WNBA – Suns owner Sarver suspended 1 year, fined $10M after probe The NBA suspended Phoenix Suns and Phoenix Mercury owner Robert Sarver for one year and fined him $10 million after an investigation found that he had engaged in what the league called “workplace misconduct and organizational deficiencies.” The findings come nearly a year after the NBA asked a law firm to investigate allegations that Sarver had a history of racist, misogynistic and hostile incidents over his nearly two-decade tenure overseeing the franchise. The league said the results of the investigation were based on interviews with 320 individuals and more than 80,000 documents and other materials. Sarver apologized for “words and actions that offended our employees,” though he disagreed with some of the report’s findings. NCAAFB – Big Ten – Joseph wants Nebraska head coaching job beyond this season Mickey Joseph says he wants to be Nebraska’s next head football coach and not just on an interim basis for the next nine games. Joseph met with the media for the first time since taking over for the fired Scott Frost. Joseph says when he accepted the interim position, he did it thinking it would be an opportunity to work toward becoming the permanent head coach. Joseph’s audition starts Saturday with a home game against former conference rival and sixth-ranked Oklahoma. NHL – Blackhawks D Jake McCabe sidelined by spine surgery Blackhawks defenseman Jake McCabe will miss the start of the season after he had cervical spine surgery. Team physician Michael Terry says McCabe is expected to return in 10 to 12 weeks. There was no word on when exactly McCabe had the surgery. Forward prospect Jalen Luypen also will miss the start of the season because of a left rotator cuff injury. The team says he is expected to return in 14 to 18 weeks. NHL – Quebec politicos: New Habs captain Suzuki must learn French Several of Quebec’s major party leaders say new Montreal Canadiens captain Nick Suzuki needs to learn French. The Canadiens announced the appointment of the 23-year-old Ontario native as the team’s captain earlier this week. He has played for Montreal the past three seasons. Liberal Leader Dominique Anglade told reporters it would be a good thing if Suzuki learned French. Parti Québécois Leader Paul St-Pierre Plamondon described Suzuki as a “very good choice” for captain but added that it is important for the Habs captain to learn French. Golf – PGA/LIV – New PGA Tour season starts in California, LIV to Chicago After two weeks of an offseason, the PGA Tour is ready for a new season. It starts with the Fortinet Championship in Napa, California. This will be the 10th and final year of a wraparound season. Max Homa is the defending champion. He won twice last season and will be making his Presidents Cup debut next week. Hideki Matsuyama also is playing. LIV Golf resumes outside Chicago at Rich Harvest Farms. The LPGA Tour is in Oregon while Rory McIlroy makes his debut in the Italian Open at Marco Simone. That’s the site of next year’s Ryder Cup. Longtime baseball beat writer Mark Gonzales stops by the podcast to talk about the Cubs (and a little White Sox--mostly so Andy can make fun of Eloy trying to catch a flyball). They discuss the Franmil Reyes era, what the Cubs should do with shortstop next season, why they didn't trade Willson Contreras or Ian Happ and if they'll trade Happ this offseason. Why did Frank Schwindel get to hang around so long, how great is it that we don't have to watch David Bote and what is it that Nick Madrigal actually does? They talk about Joe Girardi's role on Marquee. And, Andy has a great plan for how the Cubs can actually use two designated hitters at the same time. All that, and much more. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/desipio/message
