The Katherine Massey Book Club @ The C.O.W.S. hosts the 9th session on Michelle Alexander's The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration In the Age of Colorblindness. Alexander has a living White mother and a deceased black father. Despite 15 years of institutional celebration for her work, Gus T. anticipated this title being one of the "5 Worst Books Ever." History shows that racists generally do not promote literature that provides an accurate understanding of the System of White Supremacy. Deception by Omission: A serious exploration of prisons and Racism must account for the systemic forces that built them. This book's failure to center COINTELPRO, the torture legacy of Chicago's Jon Burge, or the raw profitability of caging Black men suggests Alexander is guilty of a whole lot of lying. This week, we dismantle the sheer absurdity of Alexander's "Passing" analogy. She explicitly equates a Black worker maintaining basic professional boundaries at an office job to a light-skinned Black person cutting off their family to "pass" as White under Jim Crow. We expose how this completely irrational logic reinforces the significance of her biracial background—revealing a detached, elite perspective that pathologizes normal Black workplace survival tactics. We also pull the receipts on her consistent pattern of selective framing. Alexander repeatedly highlights interviewees who struggle with the King's English, curse, and are framed as illiterate or incompetent—inadvertently validating the exact racist stereotypes that suggest Black people don't deserve justice. Plus, we expose her total historical erasure of Chicago police commander Jon Burge, showing how her academic elite narrative completely mutes real-world structural terror. #COINTELPRO #TheRedboneDeception #TheCOWS17Years INVEST in The COWS – [http://paypal.me/TheCOWS](http://paypal.me/TheCOWS) Cash App: [https://cash.app/$TheCOWS](https://cash.app/$TheCOWS) CALL IN NUMBER: 720.716.7300 CODE 564943#

When Conflict Feels Unsafe: How to Stay Open-Hearted Without Abandoning Yourself Have you ever known the “right” way to communicate, but in the heat of conflict, those tools seem to disappear? In this episode of Relationship Truth: Unfiltered, Leslie sits down with psychologist, speaker, and author Dr. Kelly Flanagan to talk about what really happens inside of us when we get triggered—and how one small, sacred moment of choice can shift us from reactivity toward connection. Together, Leslie and Kelly explore why communication often breaks down within us before it breaks down between us, how to recognize when our hearts are closing, and why open-heartedness never means becoming a doormat. This conversation is especially meaningful for women navigating destructive, painful, or confusing relationships who want to grow in wisdom, courage, and Christlike strength without abandoning themselves.   Key Takeaways Communication Breaks Down Inside Us First Dr. Flanagan explains that many people already have communication skills, but when they feel threatened, hurt, or misunderstood, they “close the toolbox” right when they need it most. The real work is not just learning better words—it is learning to notice what is happening inside our bodies, hearts, and nervous systems when we become triggered. That moment of awareness creates a pause. And in that pause, we begin to recover our God-given agency to choose a different response. You Can Notice When Your Heart Starts to Close Kelly describes a triggered moment as a process: the nervous system activates, the heart begins to shift into protection mode, and then we make a quick, often unconscious choice about whether to close down or stay open. Leslie connects this with the biblical wisdom of Proverbs: “Above all else, guard your heart.” Guarding your heart does not mean hardening it. It means learning when to pause, when to regulate, and when to make wise choices about what you allow in and what you release. Open-Heartedness Does Not Mean Weak Boundaries One of the most powerful parts of this conversation is the distinction between an open heart and a lack of boundaries. Dr. Flanagan reminds listeners that the condition of your heart is an inner posture, while boundaries are outer actions. An open heart does not make your boundaries weaker—it makes them wiser. For women in destructive or emotionally unsafe relationships, this is crucial. Christlike love does not require self-abandonment, enabling, or pretending harm is not happening. Calm Yourself Before You Try to Connect Conflict escalates when we try to calm ourselves by controlling someone else's behavior. Kelly uses the illustration of a furnace: when the “control board” inside us is malfunctioning, we often try to change the weather outside instead of tending to what is happening inside. Before we can connect well, we must first regulate. That may mean taking a break, breathing, praying, going to another room, or simply saying, “I'm triggered right now, and I need a little time before I can respond well.” Your Growth Is Never Wasted Leslie and Kelly offer hope for the woman who has tried everything to get her husband to communicate better, become safer, or look at himself honestly. While you cannot control another person's choices, you can still do your own work. Even if the relationship does not heal the way you hoped, God does not waste your growth. As you become more whole, wise, and grounded, you are better equipped to make faithful, courageous decisions about what comes next. Dr. Kelly Flanagan is offering listeners a free video tutorial that walks through the nine-step process from his book, The Road Less Triggered, helping you begin moving from reactivity toward connection. To receive the resource, email: drkellybonus@gmail.com You will also be temporarily subscribed to his online community, The Less Triggered Tribe, with the option to unsubscribe at any time.   Friend, being triggered does not mean you are failing. It means something inside of you is asking for care, attention, and wisdom. You do not have to stay stuck in reactivity, fear, silence, or blame. With God's help, you can learn to pause, regulate, speak truth, set wise boundaries, and grow into a more whole version of yourself. You are not alone, and even in painful relationships, your healing and growth still matter.

You'll hear powerful stories about legacy, succession, politics in the pulpit, and the moment Nate's schedule literally put him in the hospital—and how God used that to teach him about limits, Sabbath, and identity. NEW MONTH | NEW SERIES - “8 Starts with Me”As we step into a new month and prepare for our 8th anniversary, we're reminded that what God wants to do in our church begins personally; with each one of us.Week 1: “Hole Hearted” - Nehemiah 1:1–4Nehemiah didn't just hear about the broken walls; he allowed it to break his heart. He didn't stay indifferent; he responded in prayer, in burden, and eventually in action.God is still looking for people who won't just observe the need, but will carry it. Hearts that are moved, surrendered, and ready to respond. This Sunday, we're invited to go deeper -from hearing to doing, from ownership to responsibility, from dependence to obedience in action.Because “8” starts with me.#8StartsWithMe #HoleHearted #Nehemiah1 #FromHearingToDoing #ObedienceInAction#aHeartthatbeatsforJesusbeatsforOthers#itisaONEBEATFamdayFundaySonday! We discuss the landmark research linking leg strength to neurological health and why living "half-hearted" is a measurable physiological stressor. Together, we examine how integrity acts as a clinical anti-inflammatory and how alignment between your inner truth and outer actions creates the "coherence" necessary for the body and spirit to thrive.

It's about telling the truth about what did — fully, publicly, and without spiritual bypassing. Sarah shares what led her into the situation, the moment things escalated into violence, and what it meant to come forward after realizing the damage that had been done. We talk about accountability without collapsing into shame, and why taking responsibility doesn't always look like punishment — sometimes it looks like telling the truth and staying in the room. I share what it was like to sit across from someone who was part of my betrayal and still choose to remain grounded, discerning, and honest. We unpack why forgiveness is not the same as excusing behavior, and why gratitude doesn't erase harm — it acknowledges complexity.

I greet you in Jesus' precious name! It is Thursday morning, the 22nd of January, 2026, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today. We start in Isaiah 42:3:”A bruised reed He will not break, and smoking flax He will not quench;…” We're talking about the gentleness of our beloved Lord Jesus. And that same scripture is confirmed in Matthew 12:20:”A bruised reed He will not break, and smoking flax He will not quench,…” Just the other day, I heard a beautiful saying, ”We are strongest when we are tender.” You know, if you look at Proverbs 15:1, the Lord talks about a gentle answer turns away anger and wrath. Jesus is so gentle.I want to tell you something now, He is the most tender person who has ever walked on the face of this earth. He will not hurt you. We need to be the same.I love watching a bushman when he wants to start a fire. Unlike many of us, he doesn't go with a fire-lighter, put half a ton of wood on the fire and cause an explosion to make the fire so that he can have his braai or his barbecue! No, he comes and he takes a little bit of grass and he takes that stick and he spins that stick on a log and he blows gently on it and what happens? It just bursts into flame. So beautiful to watch. On our farm here, you know by now, we love horses. Snowy is my horse, he's twenty years old now. I want to tell you something now, there's a man by the name of Monty Roberts, he's in his late eighties, and he is the one they call ”The Horse Whisperer.” He started off getting a horse under saddle by being gentle with it. You see, in the old days, his father was one of them, actually; they would tie that poor horse up so that he couldn't walk, he had to hobble. They would beat him till they broke his spirit. That's where the saying goes, ”I'm going to break in a horse.” No, we don't do that on this farm. We gentle a horse, tenderly, and that horse will take the bridle, take the saddle. He'll be spirited, he'll have lots of personality. He won't be broken and crushed. We must do the same with each other.Mom, don't break your daughter down, be tender with her and she will make you so proud. Dad, don't be hard on your son, be gentle with him. This is a tough world that we live in. Be tender with him and he'll be tender with others.Jesus bless you and have a wonderful day.Goodbye.

Open-hearted awareness is that compassionate intelligence so greatly needed in our world today. As Anam Thubten says, “An open heart can only be experienced when we go beyond the realm of the intellectual mind”. This narwal capacity within us requires a shift of perception, a move to the heart.

Parents are in the business of training --and that should include training to serve. We train our kids not to run in the road, to put their shirt on frontwards, and to use the bathroom. During childhood these actions are challenging, but by adulthood, most of us have it figured out. We practiced these things over and over until they became ingrained and second nature. In addition to learning to brush our teeth or make breakfast, I want to teach my kids to be kind and generous. As a parent, I can't force my children to be servant hearted—only God can change them. But He has commanded me to train them in godliness, and training comes through repeated practice. If I desire to raise servant-hearted kids, then I should give them lots of opportunities during their formative years to practice service both inside and outside the home.Listen in for a discussion of why and how to do that in practical simple ways --without adding a bunch of extra tasks to our schedules.

296. Why Do Leaders Fear Being Honest with Their Congregation? with Tom Bennardo, author of Open-Hearted People, Soul-Connected Church

Why is it so hard for pastors and church people to be truly open and honest with one another? In ministry, we talk a lot about authenticity, vulnerability, and grace—but in reality, putting those ideals into practice can feel risky, messy, and even dangerous. In this episode, Tom Bennardo, author of Open-Hearted People, Soul-Connected Church, draws on decades of pastoral experience to unpack the journey from guarded exteriors to soul-connected community, offering practical wisdom for leaders who want to foster deeper spiritual formation and resilience through messy, honest, and grace-filled relationships.THIS EPISODE'S HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE:Markus Watson introduces the idea that some traditions focus on good behavior as the main thing God desires.Tom Bennardo strongly asserts that God is most interested in our hearts and souls, not primarily our outward behavior. The center of spiritual life is the soul—the inner person—and when our hearts are transformed, right behavior naturally follows. Many people develop performance-based Christianity and need to unlearn legalistic mindsets to embrace grace.Tom Bennardo describes his journey from legalism to understanding grace as central to authentic spiritual formation. The true spiritual transformation flows from inward honesty, authenticity, and a willingness to reveal one's real self to God and others.Tom Bennardo defines “open heartedness” as direct, honest engagement of one's soul—with God, oneself, and others.Spiritual growth requires level-three honesty: openly acknowledging the present condition of our soul, not just past mistakes or surface facts.Open hearted living involves being vulnerably honest not only with God, but also with ourselves and select others.Markus Watson suggests that being open hearted in relationship—with self, God, and others—can provoke anxiety, especially regarding sharing with other people.Creating authentic community requires churches to move beyond surface relationships, foster deeper honesty, and cultivate environments where vulnerability is safe and valued.Tom Bennardo highlights the importance of leaders modeling open heartedness before expecting it from congregations.Spiritual leaders must prioritize genuine relationships rather than merely teaching principles from a distance; transformation is “caught as much as taught.”Open heartedness builds resilience in leaders, enabling them to face challenges and change with trust in God rather than rigid control or certainty about the future.Tom Bennardo encourages leaders to pursue a collaborative, open-handed approach, trusting God's guidance and fostering group discernment rather than solitary authority.RELEVANT RESOURCES AND LINKS:https://tombennardo.com/Books mentioned:Open-hearted People, Soul-Connected Church, by Tom BennardoRelated episodes:262. Lawmakers in the U.S. House of Representatives have returned to Washington D.C. to vote on a bill that will end the longest federal government shutdown in history. Congress has been in stalemate for nearly seven weeks, as neither party could reach an agreement on a spending bill. But in the Senate on Sunday night, seven Democratic and one Independent joined most Republicans to pass the bill. The House, where Republicans have a majority, will vote on the bill Wednesday night. U.S. Rep. Betty McCollum, a Democrat, is the longest-serving member of Minnesota's congressional delegation. McCollum said she plans to vote against the bill.”The more Americans find out what's in it,” McCollum told MPR News, “it's not — which Republicans like to call it, a ‘clean CR' — they're going to be appalled.”She joined MPR News host Nina Moini to talk about the vote. MPR News reached out to Minnesota's Republican representatives in Congress for interviews, but did not receive a response by the time of this conversation.

This week we had the pleasure of having a very candid conversation with a rapstress who is quite literally the definition of “small body, BIG energy”. Someone who carries herself with undeniable charisma and a “little but lethal” aura — the kind of person who can command a room without raising her voice because her presence is just MASSIVE. We're talking about the one and only “ BIG GATOR”, Lola Brooke!! The lover girl at heart pulled up to chop it up with us for this week's episode and as usual she brought that gritty, unfiltered, bold, confidence, that we know and love about the unapologetically Brooklyn native. She was talking her talk!  Among other things, we discussed her journey thus far since her first Platinum hit “Don't Play With It”, her love life w/ Doe Boy, legacy, and her upcoming album “iight bet!”. You know Charlie couldn't let her leave without catchin massive rec about her height but Lo was ready to fire back!

Feeling weighed down by everything happening in the world? You're not alone. In this episode, I'm sharing how to recognize and overcome the spirit of heaviness that can make life feel overwhelming. Here's the truth I want you to know: we were never meant to carry it all. I'm starting with a simple story about grocery shopping with my son that revealed a profound spiritual principle that changed my perspective on everything. I'm diving into the reality of spiritual warfare and the heaviness that comes from trying to bear burdens we weren't designed to carry. I'll show you how Isaiah 61:3 promises us a "garment of praise instead of a spirit of heaviness" - and how to actually walk in that freedom. Listen in to discover: Why heaviness is actually a spiritual attack, not just emotions The difference between healthy grieving and the spirit of heaviness How to take authority over oppressive spirits through the Holy Spirit's power Why your words matter so much (life and death are in the power of the tongue) Practical ways I've learned to shift the atmosphere through praise and worship Moving from victim to victor mentality in your spiritual walk Free Resource: 8 Powerful Declarations to Speak Over Your Children Download at https://revivalmomprays.com/ Join the 12-Week Revival Mom Rising Experience Transform your home and your heart through the holiday season and into the new year. We are continuing our special series highlighting studies Media Gratiae has produced through the years, and this week, we are presenting to you one of our newer studies. Published in 2024, The Nature and Practice of True-Hearted Discipleship was written and taught by Dr. Ian Hamilton. If you are unfamiliar with Dr. Hamilton, we highly encourage you to seek out his books and preaching. His style is simultaneously direct and disarming. As with our other studies, there are two components: a workbook and eight video sermons. In each chapter, Dr. Hamilton guides us back to Scripture to examine what Jesus says about what it means to be his follower. The life of a disciple begins with a radically transformative new birth, and from that birth flows a life of following Jesus in obedience. We pray that this first session and the entire study may be a blessing to you. You can learn more about the study at the link below.
