In the spring of 1975, the Red Sox came racing out of the gate led by a trio of outfielders who were making a mark in the American League… Dwight Evans first came on the scene in 1972 and was now the everyday right fielder. Joining him in '75 in left was future Hall of Famer Jim Rice who would have a spectacular rookie season finishing 3rd in the league in the MVP race and 2nd in Rookie of the Year. That's because the guy manning center in Fenway had an even better first season in the bigs. Fred Lynn would go on to become the first player ever to win MVP and Rookie of the Year in the same season, a feat only matched one other time when Ichiro Suzuki did it in 2001. And for Lynn and the Sox fans, it was love at first sight. The 23-year old kid won the CF job out of Spring Training and never looked back… He would finish the season with a .331 average, 21 home runs and 105 RBI's while also winning a Gold Glove for his defensive prowess in centerfield. It was a season for the ages for Lynn and the Sox that culminated in one of the All-time classic World Series matchups between the Sox and the Big Red Machine that went 7 games after one of the most famous October HR's ever... a shot by Carlton Fisk that won arguably the greatest World Series game ever played… That Game 6 contest was a moment in sports where the people of Boston for years would ask… ‘Where were you for Game 6?” The answer for a young Dan Shaughnessy was… Fenway Park… Years before the Hall of Fame writer was hired by the Boston Globe to cover the team he grew up loving, Dan was there with his sister taking in one of the greatest games he ever witnessed… and he's seen a lot… from that Game 6, to Bucky Dent's blast in '78, to the euphoria of Dave Henderson's HR that helped propel the '86 Sox back to the World Series to the Buckner play that same October that kept the curse alive to Boone's HR in '03 and the comeback that ended 86 years of futility in 2004… Shaughnessy has literally covered it all. The author of a dozen books including One Strike Away, The Curse of the Bambino, and Reversing the Curse: Inside the 2004 Boston Red Sox, nobody knows the Sox of the last 50 years better than this kid from Groton, MA who's had a birds eye view of it all and access to the players and team like no other. Shaughnessy tells us on the Past Our Prime podcast how his friend and mentor Peter Gammons told them all to watch out for this kid from USC who was going to be the next big thing in Boston and how Freddie Lynn started hot, and never stopped in that magical Rookie season of '75. It would be almost 30 more years before the Red Sox broke the curse and Shaughnessy relives the highs, the lows, the ups and the downs of that Sox ride beginning 50 years ago, when a young phenom from L.A. took New England by storm and had a season we're still talking about on the Past Our Prime podcast. Our show's 75th episode has a special guest in Jayson Stark, one of the most well-respected, well-liked baseball writers for more than 40 years. His passion for the game and craft shines through as he discusses growing up as Stan Hochman's pen pal, studying Peter Gammons early in his career, and mentoring other young reporters. Jayson has some wild tales – including a near punch by Dickie Noles, and Dallas Green's special gift – from being a beat writer covering the early '80s Philadelphia Phillies. Hear how Jayson developed his weekly baseball column, renowned since 1983 for humor, oddball stats and offbeat facts. He tells us about a World Series game that he considers the best in history. And there's even a story connecting a Sammy Sosa homer and a certain Frenchman. The Baseball Writers' Association of America named Stark the 2019 winner of its Career Excellence Award, which he received at the Hall of Fame induction weekend in Cooperstown, New York. Jayson worked 21 years at his hometown Philadelphia Inquirer, first serving as the Phillies' beat reporter (1979-82) and then becoming the paper's national baseball writer and columnist in '83. His Baseball Week in Review column proved so popular in syndication that it continued after he was hired by ESPN in 2000. For the next 17 years, Stark served as a senior baseball writer for ESPN.com and ESPN The Magazine while making regular appearances on the cable network's TV shows “Baseball Tonight,” “SportsCenter” and “Outside the Lines,” as well as regular ESPN Radio guest spots on “Mike and Mike” and as co-host of a weekly radio show during the baseball season on ESPN Radio's affiliate in Philadelphia. His TV work includes appearances on Major League Baseball Productions, NFL Films and Philadelphia's Comcast SportsNet. He is also a former baseball analyst for the Sports Fan radio network and a commentator on the Phillies' pregame radio show. Despite his popularity and proficiency, Stark was laid off by ESPN in April 2017. He has been covering baseball at The Athletic and MLB Network since 2018. Jayson also served as a columnist for Baseball America for 16 years and has written for Sports Illustrated, Sport, Inside Sports, Sporting News, Men's Fitness and Athlon. His first job in journalism was at the Providence Journal (1975-78). Stark has won an Emmy for his work on "Baseball Tonight," has been inducted into the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame and is a two-time winner of the Pennsylvania Sportswriter of the Year award given by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association. He was a finalist for that group's National Sportswriter of the Year award in 2017. Stark was honored by Penn State's Foster Conference for Distinguished Writers in 2010. He has won several awards from the Associated Press Sports Editors, and he was inducted into the Philadelphia Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in 2017. That year, Topps issued a Jayson Stark baseball card. Jayson is the author of three books: “Wild Pitches: Rumblings, Grumblings, and Reflections on the Game I Love” (2014) “Worth The Wait: Tales of the 2008 Phillies” (2011) “The Stark Truth: The Most Overrated and Underrated Players in Baseball History” (2007) Stark earned a bachelor's degree in journalism from Syracuse University in 1973. He was born in Philadelphia and grew up in the city's Northeast section. His mother, June Herder Stark, wrote for the Philadelphia Record and worked alongside legendary sportswriter Red Smith. She later edited the Philadelphia edition of Where Magazine. You can follow Stark on X: @jaysonst Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The Pitching Command Show with guest Peter Gammons, hall of fame sports writer. With everyone throwing hard nowadays, command is now the separator. It's no longer a choice between being either a power pitcher or a finesse pitcher today. You need to be both, velocity with command. Command is what separates pitchers from the pack today. Peter began his journalism career at the Boston Globe where he covered the Red Sox for most of the 1970s and 1980s. He was also a lead baseball columnist for Sports Illustrated, as well as writing a column for Sporting News. Peter then joined ESPN as a baseball analyst in 1988 and appeared regularly on Baseball Tonight and also made appearances on SportsCenter. In 2009, he left ESPN and joined the MLB Network. Peter was voted the National Sportswriter of the Year three times by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association. A great discussion about training and measuring pitching control, command, sequencing and what it takes to pitch at higher levels of baseball. It's been CHAOS in the streets this week with Xander Bogaerts rumors leaking left and right, so we got our pal Coley Mick on the pod to make heads or tails of it all. The front office has reportedly been texting NONSTOP, even during Thanksgiving dinner. Good to hear they didn't shut their phones off during the heigh of free agency. Peter Gammons tweeted that Xander had “severed ties” with the Red Sox earlier this week which threw Twitter into an absolute frenzy. Thankfully many people know this not to be the case and we were able to get some level-headed confirmation that the Red Sox are still atop of the leaderboard among teams' chances to sign Bogaerts. We're taking a look at other free agent options for the Red Sox that could make sense in addition to Xander. Jared poses a question to Tyler asking him if he would still ride with Chaim Bloom if Xander signs elsewhere for a reasonable amount of money. Jared cooks up a Christian Yelich to Boston trade scenario and texts Yeli to get his thoughts. We call Chris Cotillo and he provides no value per usual. Coley and Jared also fight with Tyler about a player that they see as a superstar, but he does not. Thankfully, we kept this one under four hours for Pat Light. Enjoy! EPISODE 78: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:45) SPECIAL COMMENT: 12 Republicans join the Democrats to give the codification of Marriage Equality a filibuster-proof majority. The Respect for Marriage Act will be law by Christmas (2:37) It seems so obvious; it is in fact breathtaking. 14 years ago a Democratic candidate could be elected POTUS without endorsing same-sex marriage. 26 years ago a Democratic president could sign legislation defining marriage as only between a man and a woman (4:02) And 14 years and exactly one week ago, I could startle viewers, my bosses, and some liberals by decrying the passage of Prop 8 in California - which TOOK AWAY Marriage Equality awarded by the courts - in a Special Comment called "A Question of Love" (12:15) This is how far we have come: Two months later I was approached by Sir Ian McKellan who said that the fact that I was able to incorporate those opinions into an American cable newscast meant "some of my hope for the future is restored." Today, with the path to codified Marriage Equality assured, some of MY hope for the future is restored. B-Block (17:48) EVERY DOG HAS ITS DAY: Penny, in Missouri (18:50) POSTSCRIPTS TO THE NEWS: Mike Pence defies Congress (and logic), now it's Stu Varney trashing Trump (to Trump's daughter-in-law), and a Democrat beats a Faux Democrat in LA (20:22) IN SPORTS: Two unanimous Cy Young Winners for the first time since Bob Gibson's 1.12 ERA and Denny McLain's 31 wins, Virginia cancels its football game, Kyrie coming back - but why? (23:11) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Laura Ingraham continuing to try to make the fabricated Pelosi Conspiracy Theory happen and Chris Licht drowning at CNN, compete with the executives of MSNBC, NBC News, and NBC. After getting fricasseed for firing Tiffany Cross to appease fascists like Tucker Carlson, they knew what to do: Trash her anonymously in The New York Post. C-Block (32:21) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: 30 years ago today, the Colorado Rockies and then-Florida Marlins were born in the baseball expansion draft which I anchored on ESPN. The draft followed one of the weirdest you're-gonna-die-on-THAT-hill things I ever witnessed in sports broadcasting. But most importantly: I can now confess that to get the scoop as to who would be the first pick, I did a terrible, terrible thing ;-)See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

“Big Papi” becomes an "Idiot." His personality puts him at the center of the Sox's crew of hilarious misfits, and he is the key ingredient. His power carries the team, miraculously, to its first World Series title in 86 years. His confidence immediately washes away decades of dread in The Town that seemed to never catch a break. The Sox finally stand up to the bullies, "The Curse" is broken, and in doing so, Papi becomes a sensation in Boston, and a Red Sox immortal. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Ortiz goes from rock bottom, after the death of his mother and his unceremonious release by the Minnesota Twins, to a chance encounter that would change the trajectory of his life forever. But once again, the road for David Ortiz to become "Big Papi" had its obstacles. Certainly, the New York Yankees were one of them. Another, a tradition of losing in heartbreaking fashion would, once again find a new and creative way to break Red Sox Nation's collective heart. Along the way, take a deep dive into the "The Curse," and learn what it's really all about.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
