This week on Beer Sessions Radio, Jimmy returns to Roberta's studio to chat with the Bushwick All-Stars — Sake King Shinobu Kato, Beer King Jesse Ferguson, and Pizza King Brandon Hoy. The gang gets stared at by newcomers at Roberta's while talking community spirits and locality in beverage programs in Bushwick/E-Wib/Robertaville.The episode starts off with a standup comedy session about Zoom and the lack of microphones at the studio, before we get to brief introductions by Brandon, Jesse, and Shinobu along with their organizations — Roberta's Pizza, Interboro Spirits and Ales, and Kato Sake Works. They then dive right into the part of Bushwick where they are all located with the nickname E-Wib and its pre-hospitality history. Jesse also tells us more about his neighborhood tribute Bushburg pilsner, while Shinobu recalls how the local community helped him grow through the pandemic. Brandon also jumps in with the story of the Mahalo At Ya Boi — Interboro-brewed specifically for Roberta's and its locals. The conversation then moves into the world of Sake, where Jimmy gets schooled on Sake Bomb and gets so nervous that he keeps on touching the mic. Right before the break, Brandon reveals the secrets of the craftsmanship approach at Roberta's. Last but not least, we'll dive into the spirits and drinks they are all sipping at the studio. Jesse brings with him on his bike a 3-year-old straight malt whisky and a special amaro, while Shinobu talks more about his upcoming new place that you won't want to miss out on. Jesse Ferguson is the owner and head brewer at Interboro Spirits and Ales in Brooklyn. Jesse also has a background in the music industry, having served as the label manager for Definitive Jux for its entire ten year run. He joins the pod to talk about his efforts to combine craft beer and hip-hop, including collaborations with several artists such as Run the Jewels and most recently Bernadette Price (the wife of the late great Sean Price) to release rap inspired brews. Of course, we also talk with Jesse about his time at Def Jux and ask him to tell us about one of his favorite albums - De La Soul is Dead.
Run The Jewels has not only taken the music world by storm, but they are also making waves in beverage - and specifically beer. Their history of making or lending their brand to collaborations with Goose Island, Interboro Spirits & Ales and Pipeworks Brewing were initial opening experiences for how they can connect with more audiences and create new opportunities for people to experience RTJ. Since those initial events in 2017 RTJ has launched a number of other beer projects, including the “No Save Point” IPA, released in collaboration with thirteen breweries from multiple countries. The namesake song features in the game Cyberpunk 2077. Today I am joined by the co-manager of Run The Jewels, Amaechi Uzoigwe and Kate Brankin who lead these partnerships and business development endeavors. We discuss how the worlds of RTJ and craft beer overlap, how collaborations such as “Never Look Back”, allow for social justice issues to be highlighted, and what future collaborations or co-branding opportunities may look like. There's no doubt there will be more beer there. Find Run The Jewels Drinks Find Heavy Hops: Website (Listen to all episodes and access detailed show notes!) As mentioned briefly last week, Brienne Allen of Notch Brewing has been sharing stories of women in the beer industry. So far hundreds of women have come forward with stories of abuse, harassment, and worse by men in and around the brewing industry. Among the news and the announcement was a statement from Laura Dierks the founder of Interboro Spirits & Ales in Brooklyn, New York. In a signed note she said the brewery was postponing their upcoming Pils City festival because two breweries that have come under fire had been invited to participate. “We cannot stand aside when some colleagues are physically or emotionally unsafe, feel unsafe or not respected for their intellectual contributions in our community, regardless of who they are externally," she wrote. Dierks and Jesse Furguson founded the brewery in 2016, and have turned into one of the most respected and inventive breweries in New York. Known for their beers, the company’s spirits program is also known for great recipes as well, including a canned gin and tonic cocktail. A whisky will soon be released. Dierks has been speaking out on social media about the treatment of women in the industry. This is a difficult subject that can’t be ignored and she offers up her own experiences and how the brewery is looking to be a leader in the space going forward. She spoke to the show via Zoom from Brooklyn. This week on Beer Sessions Radio, Jimmy welcomes Marcus Baskerville the founder of Weathered Souls Brewing and the creator of the Black is Beautiful Stout, a collaboration centered on racial justice that has reached nearly 1,000 breweries worldwide. Marcus initially thought he would just make the stout at his own brewery but challenged himself to think bigger. He talks about the whirlwind he has experienced since launching the project on a large scale. Also joining the conversation to talk about their relationship to the collaboration are Jesse Ferguson of Interboro Spirits and Ales, Alisa Bowens-Mercado of Rhythm Brewing and Matt Tanaka of Stout Collective. Together they discuss the stout recipe itself, the value in raising money as well as awareness, and what the future holds for diversifying the beer industry.
