In the early months of the pandemic, Marcus Baskerville was working as the head brewer at Weathered Souls Brewing Company, the brewery he co-founded in San Antonio, when a police officer five states away murdered George Floyd. Marcus, who would go on to become a founding member of the National Black Brewers Association, had an idea to galvanize the industry and raise money for police brutality reform. What emerged was Black Is Beautiful, a stout recipe that would eventually be brewed by more than 1,600 breweries across the country (and 22 countries around the world.) The beer raised millions of dollars for charity, and provided a blueprint for cause beers to come. This is its story—and Marcus's story, too. Don't forget to like, review, and subscribe! Before it became a worldwide beer campaign, the phrase 'Black Is Beautiful' was a positive affirmation in my childhood. I had previously written about it on GoodBeerHunting.com in the essay, Colorism, Black Pride, and the Black Is Beautiful Initiative. Then, in June 2020, the saying also became the name of an international collab beer as an initiative created by Weathered Souls Brewing' Marcus Baskerville, raising more than $5 million across 1,601 partner breweries that sent proceeds to organizations that support equality and inclusion. Now, the initiative enters into a new phase, supporting the National Black Brewers Association's work in developing and growing Black brewers nationwide. Thanks to documentary filmmaker Marco Ortega, we get a glimpse into what this initiative meant for so many people and how Baskerville is evolving it beyond the project's initial goals. I had a chance to sit on a panel for the film with Ortega, and I knew I had to share his inspiration and passion for the film with you. In this episode, you'll hear how much admiration Ortega has for the way Baskerville is driven to help his community. We go behind the scenes to explore what it takes to make a film and along the way, Ortega provides advice for aspiring filmmakers. He also shares the emotional rollercoaster he considers a part of his creative process and talks about the unlikely celebrity who encouraged him to pursue his dreams.
Welcome back to Bitch Beer! We're thrilled to be back after a brief hiatus, and we've got an incredible episode to kick off our return. In this episode, we're diving into the world of craft beer and social impact as we sit down with filmmaker Marco Ortega to discuss his latest documentary, "Black is Beautiful."
Weathered Souls co-founder Marcus Baskerville discusses Black is Beautiful Vol. 2 and how the cause beer collaboration has evolved. Plus, Zoe and Justin break down Monday's blockbuster news that Tilray Brands will acquire eight craft brands from Anheuser-Busch InBev in a $85 million cash deal. The deal includes Shock Top, Breckenridge, 10 Barrel, Redhook, Widmer Brothers, and Blue Point, among others. Zoe and Justin also play Another Round or Tabbing Out on Harpoon's latest Dunkin' Spiked release.
Black is Beautiful Vol. 2 is comingMarcus Baskerville of Weathered Souls Brewing didn't intend to start a movement when he created his Black is Beautiful beer. Intentional or not, the movement happened, with 1,200+ breweries across all 50 states and 22 countries brewery their take on the Imperial Stout. Vol. 2 is underway, this one will be a NEIPA.National Black Brewers AssociationLess than 1% of the nearly 10,000 craft breweries in the US are black-owned, the National Black Brewers Association (NB2A) aims to change that. Through raising awareness the organization aims to the number of African Americans in brewing while raising awareness of the African American brewing history, opening more opportunity and resources for black brewers, and much more. Listen as Marcus shares about the organization and their goals.Seasonal Creep and Pumpkin HateIt's going to happen. I can't stop it. But we don't have to like. Host Ben Rice travels to Davis, CA, to celebrate Dunloe Brewing's 6th anniversary weekend with owner/brewer Brennan Fleming, plus comedian Jozalyn Sharp, hot off the release of her debut album Five Ten Two Eighty. Over some pints of absolutely incredible sours, we go deep on the rewards of brewing with farm-fresh fruit, the inherent issues with weed brownies, and reasoning with zombies. Plus! We maybe start our own commune, sort out this pesky "cancel culture" business, and come to grips with all the trails and tribulations of aging. We're going from homebrew to Peru on The Beer Hour this week! First up we'll speak with Weathered Souls Brewing's Co-Owner and Head Brewer Marcus Baskerville about getting his start with home brewing, his Black is Beautiful project, and what's on the horizon for the brewery. What's led to the success of their multiple restaurants, and how does sofrito differ by country? Listen in!
This week's Brewbound Podcast rebroadcasts two Brew Talks conversations from the 2023 Craft Brewers Conference. The first is an introduction to the National Black Brewers Association (NB2A), a newly formed trade group. Executive director Kevin Asato, Harlem Brewing founder Celeste Beatty and Black Frog Brewery owner Chris Harris share the NB2A's mission and vision, explain the challenges Black and Brown brewers face receiving capital and stress the importance of mentorship. Then, three brewery leaders share their experiences with expanding their taproom presences in out-of-state markets. Monday Night Brewing's Jeff Heck, Hi-Wire Brewing's Adam Charnack and Weathered Souls Brewing's Marcus Baskerville share their strategies, offer advice to others considering similar expansions and lay out the potential pitfalls. Plus, Brewbound's Justin Kendall and Zoe Licata share their early takeaways from CBC, straight from the convention floor in Nashville.
Host Ben Rice invites his favorite comedy friends (and lover oh my) Stephen Furey (@scubastevefurey), Emma Haney (@ehaneycomedy), and Becky Lynn (@ohthatsbecky) into his (their) home for his/their yearly winter recap. This year, we're tackling saisons for our year-end Saison's Greetings episode! We go from THE definitive saison, to clones of that saison, to slight variations to wild experimentations, while recapping our years, bickering like old friends, praising the Sacramento comedy scene as being unlike any other in the world (and why that seemingly self-important stance is provably true), and getting, well, let's face it, progressively drunker, as this episode carries on. All told, we drink, discuss, and review ten, count em, 10, different saisons from around the world (but mostly the California area, with a HEAVY emphasis on Peter Hoey/Urban Roots Brewery & Smokehouse creations). Barbers! Brussel sprouts! Ballpark Hot Dogs! Ben's Condiment Bindle! Biscuits and Gravy! Bleu Cheese! Ben's Infamous Blackout! Being banned from comedy clubs (and Bars!)!(unrelated to previously-mentioned blackouts) Bullying! Beer! Beer donations! Things that don't start with B! (In case things like ASMR, alarm clock harmonies, apricots, ah crap that's all A's, ok, take 2 - in case things like parking tickets, favorite cereals, secondary fermentations, the fickle fortune of fame, disrespectful comics and booking requests (ah crap, booking starts with B), and global domination tickle your fancy)Look, there's a lot to unpack here and maybe we resolve some stuff and maybe we don't. Do some of us have multiple 3rd favorite saisons? Probably. Do we appreciate the art and science of it all? Mostly. Do we do this for us? No! We do it for you. So give it a spin and enjoy episode 168 of Barley & Me.Spoiler Alert: The Beer Dies at the EndFollow Barley & Me across social media @barleyandmepod and be on the lookout for the pending revamping of barleyandmepod.comYou can find Emma Haney on IG @ehaneycomedy or on Twitter @emmaiscool69Follow Becky Lynn across social media (and Venmo) @ohthatsbeckyCheck out Stephen Furey on IG @scubastevefureyAnd be sure to learn more about the Black Is Beautiful Initiative, as featured in Episode 129 with Marcus Baskerville of Weathered Souls Brewing, at www.blackisbeautiful.beerGet your merch or make donations at www.customink.com/fundraising/black-is-beautiful-initiative Ben is also posting #Chugs4Charity videos infrequently on Instagram (@barleyandmepod), to help raise funds for those affected by this shutdown. On the first episode of the Brewer to Brewer podcast Tomme Arthur of The Lost Abbey interviews Marcus Baskerville of Weathered Souls Brewing. Eventually the conversation turns to Black is Beautiful, the global collaboration that Baskerville and the brewery spearheaded. To date more than 1,200 breweries in 22 countries have brewed and released the beer which aims to “raise awareness for the injustices people of color face daily and raise funds for police brutality reform and legal defenses for those who have been wronged.” Much has been said and chronicled about the beer and its history but Arthur wanted to go a little deeper and do a fresh check in. Host Ben Rice travels to Campus Brewing in West Sacramento to complete his 2021 recap/2022 preview episode with his Barley & Me Presents: Leonard Malting co-hosts Corky McDonnell (Dare Daniel Podcast) and Paulina Olivares (Pink Boots Society/Drake's). Alas, by the time you hear this, Campus will be no more, as the cards were stacked against it. And that's kinda the vibe here, as we all brought a beer that was at least one year old, starting strong with Corky's pick of Great Divide Barrel Aged Yeti, sliding back to reality with one of COVID's early victims, San Leandro's Cleophus Quealy's barrel aged farmhouse ale Dark Horse, then ruining the reality of love with Paulina's pick, a Pliny the Younger TIPA bottled on 2/14/2020. From the best of bestiality (jokes) to the secret joys of colonoscopies, this episode shines a light on the absurdity that has been our past two years, with a sarcastic and, sadly, dejected eye on 2022. Oh, and we have two secret additional beers you need to tune in to find out about, because we've learned at least one thing from this experience. Host Ben Rice travels (digitally) to Walla Walla, Washington, simply for an excuse to say Walla Walla, Washington over and over again. While there, he also manages to interview Troy Robinson of Quirk Brewing and Phil Neumann of Mainstem Malt about locally-sourced, salmon-safe ingredients in Quirk-y craft beers (and more streamlined ones as well, stream/salmon pun intentional), as well as the challenges of being deemed "organic", and getting local farmers to buy in on craft beer. That's right ATB is releasing it's second episode of the week! The boys wanted to get out an episode before MDW so everyone could listen while they are heading to their holiday parties! No Dan and Tom are not actually in Texas but they did interview Marcus Baskerville from Weathered Souls Brewery in San Antonio. This well timed interview marks the one year anniversary of the Black Is Beautiful initiative which was started by Marcus at Weathered Souls. The boys dig in deep with Marcus on a number of topics and ATB is very appreciative of his time. At the end of this interview Marcus drops a BOMBSHELL upcoming collab that, as far as anyone knows, has not been announced anywhere! ***Warning*** ( Some of the audio is not up to our typical standards. That was our fault for not preparing our guest properly...mistakes happen and we're sure you will still enjoy.)Also Dan and Tom spend time discussing upcoming releases, expansions and re openings of some hot spots! ATB also snuck in a brief follow up to last week's big story...we can't forget what went down a couple weeks ago.All this, and more, on another episode of America The BREW-tiful!

Marcus began brewing with a cheap home brewing kit. It spawned a passion for brewing that found him in San Antonio opening Weathered Souls Brewing Co. As if that wasn't enough, he started the Black is Beautiful initiative that was joined by over 1200 breweries around the world. It raised money and awareness for social justice causes. Transcript: [music] Justin Hill: Hello and Bienvenidos San Antonio, welcome to the Alamo Hour, discussing the people, places and passions that make our city. My name is Justin Hill, a local attorney, proud San Antonian and keeper of chickens and bees. On the Alamo Hour, you'll get to hear from the people that make San Antonio great and unique, and the best kept secret in Texas. We're glad that you're here. Welcome to the Alamo Hour. Today's guest is Marcus Baskerville. Marcus is the brewer and co-founder of Weathered Souls Brewing right here in San Antonio. As if the story about all the inventive beers is not impressive enough, you spearheaded and created what turned into a international movement called the Black Is Beautiful Movement, which ended up including 1200 breweries across 22 countries and for us Texans, 122 participating breweries just here in Texas. I'm really excited to meet you and chat with you and thank you for doing this Marcus. Marcus Baskerville: Yes, no problem. Thank you for having me. Justin: You are in your yeast lab is what I think I heard you say a second ago. Marcus: No, office used to be my use lab. Now I'm in my crate office. Justin: [laughs] When you grow a business, you grow where you can grow. Marcus: Exactly. [crosstalk]. Justin: We do all these similar. I want to ask you a few questions, get to know you a little bit, talk to you about San Antonio. I know some of the answers because I did some research beforehand, but when and what brought you to San Antonio? Marcus: I moved to San Antonio almost eight years ago, I think June will be eight years. What brought me to San Antonio was actually a promotion. I used to be in fraud prevention dealing with banking. I came out here to train some new employees as they moved to corporate office from Sacramento to San Antonio. In the process of that, ended up getting a little promotion and decided to stay. Justin: Born and raised in Sacramento, right? Marcus: Yes. Justin: You moved here eight years ago. How have you liked it so far? Marcus: I've enjoyed it. I'm still here, right? Justin: I mean, the weather is very different than Sacramento. Marcus: Weather is this huge difference. That's what keeps my family from coming too often. They're like, "Oh, your guys' weather is so sporadic." Outside of that and the occasional bad drivers, I've really enjoyed San Antonio. Justin: You haven't been here all that long. Eight years is a while, but what are some of your favorite hidden places in San Antonio, hidden gems, places that when you moved here, nobody really told you about and then when you found them, you thought, "Wow, how did I not know about this?" For me the Botanical and the Japanese Tea Gardens are two of those things that when I finally went there, I thought, "Why didn't anyone tell me about this?" Do you have any places like that here? Marcus: That would definitely be one of them. I actually just went to that recently with my children a couple of months ago. That was the first time I had been. I was like, "Wow, this is a beautiful place. I wish I'd known about this years ago.| Justin: You wouldn't even know when you're hear. Marcus: Yes, exactly. Then outside of that, one of the things originally when I first moved here was the Pearl. I really enjoyed Pearl area just to be outside and that type of thing. Nobody really put me onto the Pearl back in the day and outside of that really, some of the like different trails and hiking, different things like that. I like to try to get outdoors, I'm always...

In this episode, we bring out one from the vault due to massive power outages in Texas, and we talk about the 2020 social justice initiative: Black Is Beautiful, started by Marcus Baskerville of Weathered Souls Brewing Co.
It’s been a busy and momentous year for Marcus Baskerville. The co-owner and head brewer of San Antonio’s Weathered Souls Brewing made national news with his Black Is Beautiful initiative in 2020. To date, more than 1,200 breweries in all 50 states and 22 countries have patrticipated in the open-source collaboration to raise funds and awareness for diversity and racial justice. However, well before that initiative, Baskerville already had developed a strong reputation among fellow brewers and Texas drinkers for his characterful stouts and other beers. In this episode, Baskerville lays out his approach to brewing, including: Developing a distinct flavor point-of-view when brewing established styles Building stout grists that minimizes roast and smoke flavors Counterintuitive balancing of base stouts with adjuncts Building caramel midtones in stouts while keeping specialty malts under control Creating body with high mash temps and flaked oats, plus long boils and maltodextrin (but no lactose) Managing fermentation in imperial stouts Adjunct processing for vanilla, marshmallow powder, coconut, and more The impact of various bourbon flavors on barrel-aged stouts Best barrel preparation practices, including soaking to rehydrate Baskerville also reflects on how the Black Is Beautiful project has evolved over the past months, how to help brewers be relevant to Black drinkers, creating allies within the industry, and the importance of positivity. *This episode is brought to you by: * G&D Chillers (https://gdchillers.com): As the brewing industry’s premier choice for glycol chilling, G&D Chillers has set the standard on quality, service, reliability and dedication to their customer’s craft. New this year, Redundancy meets Efficiency! G&D’s Micro-Channel Condensers are built with all aluminum construction which eliminates galvanic corrosion. Using half the refrigerant of conventional condensers with fewer brazed connections, translates to a lower GWP and less opportunity for leaks. BSG (https://bsgcraftbrewing.com/) Crisp Scottish Pale Ale Malt is the workhorse of many a brewery and is at home in a variety of beer styles. Crisp sources the lowest-nitrogen spring barley from farmers in Fife up to Moray. During malting, high cast moistures and a balance of optimal germination time and temperature results in an even, well-modified malt with a rich color and balanced sweet, malt flavor which is ideally suited to ale brewing. Marcus Baskerville, son of Sacramento, came by his love of craft beer honestly. You see, California is the craft beer capital of the country with the most independent breweries per capita - and in sheer numbers California has double the amount of breweries than the next most popular state. Baskerville began experimenting with a home brew kit his sister had purchased and after a while became quite renowned in the home brew scene. The scene was rich with information on becoming a better brewer and mentors were abundant and eager to share. Eventually he relocated to San Antonio, Texas, got a regular day job and set about making a name for himself in his new hometown known more for Dos Equis than craft beer. Soon, Baskerville was flourishing as a home brewer and was offered a chance to do a tap takeover at a local brewpub. Marcus Baskerville was officially in the craft brew game. Like hundreds of bearded hipsters with tattoos and a killer recipe before him, Baskerville went from hobbyist to entrepreneur and wound up opening his own craft beer brewery with friend and colleague Mike Holt called Weathered Souls. A couple of things set Baskerville apart from his predecessors. First, is the Weathered Souls signature stout. Another thing is that he was one of only a handful of brewers in San Antonio. Oh, and Marcus Baskerville is Black. Now you might not think a Black head brewer and entrepreneur is unlikely in this day and age. But the numbers speak for themselves. Craft brewing is a white male dominated industry like almost no other. Female head brewers make up roughly five percent of all head brewers in the country. Black brewers are around one percent. Being a Black head brewer is only part of this Grow for Good story. Like all great entrepreneur stories, there’s so much more to tell and Marcus Baskerville is far from one dimensional, and neither are his beers. We’ll talk more about his craft, his position in the industry and an idea he had this summer that sparked a revolution in the industry. -- Show Notes: Weathered Souls Brewing Co. You may have seen the Black Is Beautiful worldwide collaboration concept basically everywhere online. Now with over 1000 breweries signed up across the globe, a small brewery in San Antonio, Texas has really made a name for themselves with their selfless and beautiful idea to support social justice and racial equality everywhere. Co-Founder of Weathered Souls Marcus Baskerville joined Cee and Tiff for a great conversation, speaking on the foundation of the brewery, his experiences as a Black man in the craft beer industry, and of course, we focused heavily on the Black Is Beautiful collab - how it came about, what inspired it, and how it went from a small idea to something much, much larger than they ever anticipated. This is a must-listen - enjoy! If you're a brewery who wants to participate in the Black Is Beautiful collaboration, visit blackisbeautiful.beer for more information. Black is Beautiful, a name borrowed from a prior time and a movement celebrating pride and bringing awareness to continued disparities and police violence against people of color. Marcus Baskerville, co-founder of Weathered Souls Brewing Company, found himself brewing more than just a beer. He started a new movement, the Black is Beautiful fundraising effort to not only bring awareness to police brutality but to open people’s eyes to the lingering, sometimes more subtle, racism that surrounds us daily.I debated releasing this episode until I built the full show, which when initially planned would be a show focusing on this beer’s impact in Lansdale. For now, that’s on the backburner. Instead, I decided to get to know Baskerville. We hear his story to beer and how one missed protest drove him to build a movement. Round Guys Radio's Inside the Brewery is presented by Round Guys Brewing Company. This episode features host Bill McGeeney interviewing Marcus Baskerville. Feeling disappointed in himself for not participating in the local protests, Marcus Baskerville, Founder and Head Brewer at Weathered Souls Brewing Company in San Antonio, Texas, decided to use his brewery platform to start the Black is Beautiful Beer Initiative. Challenged by his friend and mentor, Jeff, Co-Founder of Jester King Brewery, to turn his recipe into a collaboration, over the next 24 hours, that's exactly what he did. “This platform and collaboration is about understanding and supporting people of color and inclusion. It is a collaborative effort to raise awareness for the injustices people of color face daily and raise funds for police brutality reform and legal defenses for those who have been wronged.” (Black is Beautiful) ( https://blackisbeautiful.beer/#consumer-section ) Today there are over 1,000 breweries, 50 states, and 19 countries participating in the Black is Beautiful Beer Initiative. We brought a few of these breweries together in one place to talk more about why they joined this initiative and what they are doing to keep this momentum moving forward. From our conversation, we also gained a little insight into the diversity, or lack there-of, in the brewing industry. While these topics need to be talked about – from tension and strife comes change – as humans, we also need a way to decompress and find joy. So we even got a chance to talk about cooking, playing Dungeons and Dragons, and how simply enjoying a good beer can be joyful. The brewing industry will continue to build community and provide the much needed space to continue to talk across the aisle, to listen to each other, and to learn from each other. Will you? ------------ Participants ------------ We were honored to be able to speak to representatives from the following breweries: Weathered Souls Brewing Company ( http://weatheredsouls.beer/ ) - San Antonio, TX Green Bench Brewing Company ( https://www.greenbenchbrewing.com/ ) - St. Petersburg, FL Jester King Brewery ( https://jesterkingbrewery.com/ ) - Austin, TX Goldspot Brewing Company ( https://goldspotbrewing.com/ ) - Denver, CO St. Elmo Brewing Company ( http://www.stelmobrewing.com/ ) - Austin, TX Fogtown Brewing Company ( https://www.fogtownbrewing.com/ ) - Ellsworth, ME Sedona Beer Company ( https://www.sedonabeerco.com/ ) - Sedona, AZ There are over 1,000 breweries participating in this initiative. Black is Beautiful is the cooperative fund raising recipe from Marcus Baskerville of Weathered Soul Brewing in Austin, Texas. Natalie Cilurzo calls in to talk to Steve Jaxon and Herlinda Heras today on Brew Ha Ha. Black is Beautiful now has over 1000 participants and they will taste and describe Russian River Brewing Co.'s version of it today. Natalie describes how the city of Santa Rosa has closed five blocks of 4th Street downtown, from now until October 15, so that restaurants, including the Russian River Brewing Co. downtown Santa Rosa location, can provide additional outdoor seating with social distancing. There is a little parklet in front of their place. Bayside Church donated their time and materials to build parklets for the restaurants that wanted them. Natalie really appreciates that effort. In Windsor, Russian River Brewing Co. is closed for dining and open for beer and food take-out. They do have tables and chairs out in front so people can bring their take-out outside and have it there, but the beer garden is closed for the time being. Their third batch of Pliny for President 2020 has been released. Herlinda gave some to John O'Hurley, the famous actor who played Peterman on Seinfeld, there in the studio. As they taste the Black is Beautiful ale, Natalie describes it as thick and rich, an Imperial Stout that is "definitely not for the faint of heart." Russian River Brewing Co. has also released their edition of the Black is Beautiful project. That's the recipe that Marcus Baskerville of Weathered Soul Brewing has launched. Marcus was on Brew Ha Ha a few weeks ago, on June 11, to describe it. He invites brewers to use the beer to raise money for their choice of local causes. Russian River Brewing Co. has chosen to support Legal Aid of Sonoma County and The California Innocence Project. Pliny runs for President every four years on the Keg Party ticket, this is his fourth campaign. They thought it would be a beer they could use to celebrate reopening, but since reopening is postponed, it's for shelter in place now and they are releasing it in cans now. California customers can order it or get it at the breweries. It is a double dry hop. It has a bright, fruity citrussy beer. She gets grapefruit and citronella. It's based on Pliny the Elder but "even better." Gabe Jackson from the Beverage People was going to come in but is busy. Herlinda will be curing olives this Fall, with help from The Beverage People. Herlinda says Gabe wanted the audience to know that they are available to give you advice about what you will be doing with their equipment. Visit the Beverage People dot com. Of course we're going into apple and wine season and they have equipment for cider and winemaking. You can order anything you need and pick it up at the store or have it delivered.

This episode we present a series of interviews around the Black is Beautiful Beer Collaboration Project. Over 900 breweries representing every state in the US and over 17 countries around the world have joined the effort to raise awareness for the injustices people of color face daily and raise funds for police brutality reform and legal defenses for those who have been wronged. We start off the episode with the man who started the project, Marcus Baskerville, Founder and Head Brewer at Weathered Souls Brewing in San Antonio, Texas. Next, we are joined by Timothy White, Jr., one of the founders of the first wholly black owned brewery in Pennsylvania, Harris Family Brewing in Harrisburg. Harris Family has joined in the project with several brew day collaborations with Love City Brewing, Two Locals Brewing, and Tröegs. Finally, we catch up with our old friend, Sam Masotto, owner of Bonn Place Brewing in Bethlehem, PA. Bonn Place brewed their version of the Black is Beautiful beer with another local, minority owned brewery, Country Club Brewing and has committed to donating the proceeds to black-owned small businesses. Part of this project is encouraging breweries to commit to the long term work of promoting equality in their businesses. Though we’re not brewing a beer, we are committed to making a concerted effort to do our part to promote diversity and representation in the world of beer. If you would like to learn how you can help support the black community in the struggle for justice and equality, Black Lives Matter has provided a comprehensive list of resources here: https://blacklivesmatters.carrd.co/
This week on Beer Sessions Radio, Jimmy welcomes Marcus Baskerville the founder of Weathered Souls Brewing and the creator of the Black is Beautiful Stout, a collaboration centered on racial justice that has reached nearly 1,000 breweries worldwide. Marcus initially thought he would just make the stout at his own brewery but challenged himself to think bigger. He talks about the whirlwind he has experienced since launching the project on a large scale. Also joining the conversation to talk about their relationship to the collaboration are Jesse Ferguson of Interboro Spirits and Ales, Alisa Bowens-Mercado of Rhythm Brewing and Matt Tanaka of Stout Collective. Together they discuss the stout recipe itself, the value in raising money as well as awareness, and what the future holds for diversifying the beer industry. Cheers, craft beer community! We're incredibly excited to welcome Marcus Baskerville on the show, head brewer and co-founder of Weathered Souls Brewing in San Antonio, TX. We first learned of Marcus through the Black is Beautiful beer collaboration; he's the creator and recipe designer for the entire project. Before we discuss the collaboration, we talk about Marcus's history as a beer drinker, and what sucked him into craft beer. We also find out how being super competitive led him to start brewing his own beer. After winning some awards for his home-brew and selling out local festivals, he left his bank job and signed on as an assistant brewer and learned what-not-to-do.Turning to the Black is Beautiful beer collaboration, we talk about the inspiration behind the project: (as of June 23, 2020), over 800 breweries are signed on from all 50 US states and 14 countries. Marcus explains the importance of the message behind the beer and why the message needs to continue beyond a collaboration. He talks about his inspiration behind the project, and how he was able to get it up and public in so little time. And there's even a home-brew version that people can brew at home that was developed by champion home brewer Annie Johnson.Turning to the craft beer community, we talk about how the San Antonio and Texas beer community has embraced Black is Beautiful. We also discuss how supportive the community has been throughout the pandemic, and how the brewery has had to pivot to keep up with the challenges from COVID-19. We wrap up our conversation with a round of rapid-fire questions: brewer edition.A huge thank you to Marcus Basketville for spending time with us during a busy week of promoting and brewing. Marcus Baskerville, co-founder of Weathered Souls Brewing Company, joins Steve Jaxon and Herlinda Heras today on the Brew Ha Ha podcast. Marcus Baskerville's project "Black" is Beautiful is featured in this article in Forbes Magazine. entitled "Weathered Souls’ Black Is Beautiful Campaign Shows Racial Solidarity In Craft Beer." Weathered Souls Brewing Company will celebrate its fourth anniversary this November. They are located in San Antonio, TX. Marcus grew up in northern California. They have been the #1 brewer in San Antonio for the last couple of years. They are known for their Stout beer and they have a lot of local support. There are less than 30 black-owned breweries in America and Weathered Souls Brewing Co. is one of them. They toast with Pliny for President 2020 from Russian River Brewing. The Black is Beautiful collaboration is up to almost 600 participating breweries around the world. He has created a recipe for a Stout beer, his specialty. Breweries can download the recipe and either follow it carefully or adapt it. The plan is for breweries to donate the profits locally to organizations supporting police reform and social justice. The idea is for this project to start conversations and projects on a local basis in as many places as possible. Marcus says that he has found the brewing industry to be inclusive and welcoming. Beer can be, "...the first step in creating change." He remembers being inspired by Annie Johnson winning Home Brewer of the Year. Visit the Russian River Brewing Co. for updated opening hours and to see the menu. (707) 545-BEER.

A conversation with the co-founder and head brewer of Weathered Souls Brewing in San Antonio about the Black is Beautiful collaboration beer.
On this week's episode of 'Beyond the Pale Ale' I'm fortunate enough to be joined by Co-Founder and Head Brewer, Marcus Baskerville, from Weathered Souls Brewing Co. in San Antonio, TX. We chat about their business model during the Covid-19 Pandemic, his journey from Sacramento to San Antonio, diversity in the beer industry, and of course about their 'Black is Beautiful' beer project. In this episode, Jackie and Alex discuss the makeover that Sunset Station will be getting, paid sick time for all San Antonians, and do The Spurs need a new practice facility to keep going? Oh and I think we have a special announcement or something. We then head to Henley's Gentleman's Grooming for a nice talk with Diesel Barbershop and Henley's founder, Shayne Brown. After that, Jackie and James head to Weathered Souls Brewing Co. to chat with owner and head brewer, Marcus Baskerville for another edition of Cheers for Local Beers. In this episode of The Session, we are joined by Marcus Baskerville from Weathered Souls Brewing Company in San Antonio, Texas. Marcus flew out to join us in-studio and brought some incredibly unique creations to share. From a stellar American Light Lager (brewed with a very unique yeast from White Labs, WLP925 High Pressure Lager Yeast) to an Imperial Milk Stout that he boiled for 24 hours, Marcus runs the gamut of styles and does them all very well. We also get to meet his family, which includes his retired Correctional Officer and proud father (we get great stories our of him) and his cousin (also our good friend) Terrence The Black. We round out the show with a bit of beer news that Sully shares his expertise on, and end with a bang after a good ol' fashioned 3 hour Session. Learn more about your ad choices. WARNING: This episode is FULL of fun and light profanity... In this What's Brewing Sports podcast episode 10 (aired April 6th, 2019), Richard and Andrew take on their first live event! They dive right into the depths of the soul crushing disappointment that became the AAF with special guest, Jason Minnix of ESPN 1250AM/94.5FM "The Blitz", as well as the question- what are the real expectations of the San Antonio Spurs? Richard and Andrew interview Marcus Baskerville, head brewery/co-founder of Weathered Souls, about beers brewed, the new partnership with Silver Eagle, and future of WS. To say it was a full evening packed with brew, sports and good times is an understatement. The best way to sum up the night is, simply, "That's, what's brewing!"
