In this episode, we sit down with Tom Schoeller. Tom hosts an annual event in Stroudsburg called Pub Tour for a Cure, designed to raise awareness and funds for juvenile diabetes research, specifically supporting the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). Tom Schoeller, motivated by his daughter's diagnosis of type 1 diabetes, created the event to foster community spirit by encouraging participants to visit participating bars and restaurants in any order they prefer. Proceeds from event-specific t-shirt sales contribute to the cause. We cover the importance of distinguishing between type 1 and type 2 diabetes, the advances in medical technology for diabetes management, and the personal and community impact of the event. If you want to help out, there are multiple donation avenues and levels of sponsorship, all aiming to involve the broader community and acknowledge the event's connection to local festivities and the invaluable support of family and sponsors. Episode 317 - Tommy Keegan Tribute with Interboro, Newburgh, and Industrial Arts via https://mfgtec.org/keegan-ales/ Happy Monday, Thieves! We’re paying tribute to a local legend this week. Tommy Keegan of Kingston, NY’s Keegan Ales unexpectedly died of heart attack on April 30 and we wanted to reflect on his legacy in the craft beer community in the greater NYC and Hudson Valley region. Tommy was one of a kind, a true open-hearted person who touched nearly everyone he encountered. We’re joined by Jesse Ferguson of Interboro, Geoff Wenzel of Industrial Arts, and Paul Halayko of Newburgh Brewing. Jesse and Augie reminisce about Tommy dropping by Carton in the early days, Paul tells us about Tommy reaching out when Newburgh was getting up and running, and Geoff talks about what it was like working for Tommy in the early days (when Geoff was legally too young to even drink the beer he was helping brew). We talk about our experiences with and the influence of Tommy’s Mother’s Milk and Hurricane Kitty and why those beers were some of the most formative early drinking experiences for us. It was a melancholic stroll down memory lane and we hope you enjoy our tribute. Let us know if you have any you would like to share yourselves.***As always, you can email your questions, complaints, whimpers, or whines to us at stealthisbeerpodcast@gmail.com. This week on Beer Sessions Radio Jimmy talks with Jean Broilet of Tired Hands Brewing, Jesse Ferguson of Interboro Spirits and Ales and Ryan Witter-Marithew of Casita Brewing Company about the I Voted Today IPA. This collaborative beer project was started at Tired Hands and has spread to about 45 breweries who are helping to raise awareness about the information people need to vote and donate money to nonprofits like the ACLU and Democracy Works. These guests talk about their spin on Tired Hands’ recipe, why voting matters, and the laws that impact breweries from taxes to shipping regulations. They also talk about what it’s like working with artists on can graphics and share stories about some of their craziest beers - including a quintuple IPA, a tomato basil ale, and a beer made with fresh oysters.Beer ListInterboro Sprits and Ales, I Voted Today IPAJester King Brewery, I Voted Today IPASparkling Artisanal, Ritual Pineapple Hard Seltzer Heritage Radio Network is a listener supported nonprofit podcast network. This week, Dr. Mike Quintans is talking with Dr. David Webner, a board-certified sports medicine and brain injury medicine physician at Crozer Health Sports Medicine. His main areas of research include endurance sports medicine and sports concussion. Please leave us a 5-star review on Apple Podcasts! See below to learn how. HOW TO WRITE A PODCAST REVIEW USING APPLE'S PODCAST APP Launch the Apple Podcast app on your iPhone or iPad. Tap the Search icon (on the bottom right) and search for “On Q Performance Therapy.” Tap the album art. On the podcast page, scroll down to Ratings & Reviews. Tap Write a Review at the bottom of this page. If necessary, enter your iTunes password to log in. Give us a 5-star rating and a brief review! We'd be very appreciative! 02:19 - Dr. Webner works with recreational, amateur, and professional athletes of all ages. He is the team physician for the Philadelphia Union, Widener University, and Interboro high school. 03:10 - Dr. Webner and his fellow practitioners serve multiple high schools within the Philadelphia suburbs as the team physicians. They are the go-to people for anything related to athletes, illness, and injury. 04:45 - As a primary care sports medicine physician, he looks at every aspect of an athlete from cardiac and neurological issues to emotional health. Drs. Quintans and Webner agree that anyone who moves their body beyond their daily activities is considered an athlete, and can benefit from sports medicine. 07:51 - One third of his patients are primary and secondary school athletes, one third weekend warriors to college athletes, and one third are the elderly population. 14:53 - Dr. Webner discusses some of the successes and challenges he faced as he helped restart Major League Soccer - the first professional sport to start up again in the wake of COVID-19. 25:14 – While high school athletes do not have as many resources against COVID compared to professional teams, there are still ways to return safety through social distancing, wearing masks, and practicing responsibly in pods. 28:04 – Dr. Webner discusses which sports he thinks are safest to return to play, and what measures all athletes can take to return to sports safely. He discusses multiple ways to deal with the discomforts of wearing masks while playing sports. Some of these include: bringing multiple masks to switch out when they get too sweaty and taking water breaks away from others so you have a chance to catch your breath without a mask on. 35:53 - Dr. Webner describes some of the after-effects of COVID on people's health. 40:34 - People who have symptoms after they've “recovered” from COVID need to be looked at closely by a cardiologist to see if there is any heart damage. Myocarditis is an inflammation in the heart muscle that can lead to arrhythmias (abnormal heart rhythms) which are potentially life-threatening. 44:00 - Parents should have an open dialogue with their children and pay attention to their activity levels - if they are suddenly laboring themselves to play sports, go on a walk, or run around the house, then that is an indication they should see a doctor. 50:30 - Dr. Webner talks about the degree to which sports will return in the fall, and how accountability will play a large role in this. He offers advice to organizations on how to approach decision making when it comes to sports and COVID protocols. 58:28 - A good rule of thumb for athletes returning to sports after recovering from COVID is to take it gradually. Could a beer save the planet and feed the world? Every year, 1.3 billion tonnes of food produced for human consumption is lost and wasted. A staggering quaintly of food that could easily feed the 840 million people who are hungry. The UN designated September 29th as International Awareness Day of Food Loss and Waste to grow awareness and inspire action. Toast Ale and Interboro Ales & Spirits have joined together to release ‘United Rye Stout,’ a seasonable craft stout brewed with surplus nordic organic rye bread from Bread Alone Bakery. Upcycling surplus bread reduces food waste, and the land, water and energy requirements to produce and grow malt. On this episode of Tech Bites, host Jennifer Leuzzi talks with Toast Ale founder Tristram Stuart and Interboro Ales & Spirits Founder and Brewmaster Jesse Ferguson about their collaboration.Photo Courtesy of Interboro Ales & SpiritsHeritage Radio Network is a listener supported nonprofit podcast network. This is part one of a two-part feature from New York City Beer Week. This was recorded at The Well in Brooklyn, just a week or so before the city announced a state of emergency because of COVID-19. We’re now releasing these episodes in an entirely new context—keep that in mind as you listen. But many of the topics are timeless and will continue to be valuable long after this pandemic has passed and New York City comes back to life. This is our second year hosting these talks at The Well—and it’s a great opportunity to take stock of things as local NYC brewers, brewers from upstate, and some from far away all come together for an increasingly exciting series of events, special releases, and festivals for the week. This year, NYC Beer Week fell at the exact same time as GBH’s annual Uppers & Downers festival in February, so I wasn’t personally able to make the trip and host the panels. But I’m glad to say we got a couple of local hosts we greatly admire in my stead. The first session is hosted by the prolific and chatty Joshua Bernstein, an author that’s been published on Good Beer Hunting. He’s one of my personal favorite voices in beer—Josh is a phenomenal conversationalist and endlessly curious. He hosts a panel with friends from Civil Society in Florida, Interboro in Brooklyn, Dancing Gnomeout of Pittsburgh, Modist from Minneapolis, and Rockwell out of St. Louis. This our first recording from New York City Beer Week, hosted by Joshua Bernstein. Listen in.

This week on Beer Sessions Radio the bar owners and brewers behind popular beers, El Pres Pilsner and Dead Pres Lager come together to discuss this collaboration and their stories as bar owners of color. To create these beers individuals from Bar 177, Bar 180, BierWax, The Bronx Beer Hall, The Sampler, and Uptown Beer Society worked with Interboro Spirits and Drafts. This group talks about the desire to create a beer that would resonate with the Latinx community. They express that their passion for creating and selling beer goes beyond making money, these men strive to represent the local businesses and culture of their neighborhoods. Many of these bars were the first to sell craft beer in their community and the conversation covers how they continue to thrive as New York City changes around them. This week the city of brotherly love is reestablished in the borough of Brooklyn, New york as Steve’s big brother Matt joins us with a handful of east coast ales to throw into our tummy pails! A recent work trip to the hipster-laden neighborhoods of B-town resulted in a suitcase full of brews that we can’t get our hands on out in the good ol’ Califor-Nai-Ay including Interboro’s Premiere Double Dry Hoppped IPA and Other Half Brewing’s Dream Layers Oat Cream IPA and Feels Like Outer Space American Imperial (AKA Triple) IPA. These tasty suds are complimented by a bevy of brews news about recent review brewery, Trillium, and their employment woes as well as diving deep into their heavy metal-filled childhoods - leading all the way up to their recent visit to the Decibel Metal & Beer fest at The Wiltern in Los Angeles, where they crushed can releases from Hoof Hearted, Wake Brewing and a handful of others as their ears guzzled sick riffs with their noses inhaling dank spliffs! Let’s guzzle down and drink in the memories of these brothers from the same mother!
It’s a full house this week on Beer Sessions Radio! Brewers from Interboro, KCBC, Indian Ladder Farms, Greenpoint Beer & Ale, Cerveceria Rancho Humo, and Just Add Beer are here to talk about collaborations while they enjoy the products that have resulted from them. Partnerships stretch across New York State connecting brewers with the farmers growing hops and malts. But the local market is still developing and the brewers and farmers around the table discuss the challenges they currently face in working together. As they continue to taste, these brewers take us through the process, ingredients, and inspiration behind their beers. Everyone shares about the events, travels, and coincidences that have led to exciting collaborations in craft brewing. Beer Sessions Radio is powered by Simplecast.

Today on Talking Tea we're doing something a little different from our usual format. A few weeks back we were invited by the folks at Tea Dealers and the 29b Tea House (featured in our prior episode Ambassadors of Tea) to join them in conversation at an evening of tea and alcohol experiments they were planning and record the event for Talking Tea. We did just that, and we're pleased to bring you the event as a Talking Tea episode. We join Andreas Vagelatos and Graham Pirtle of Tea Dealers, Jesse Ferguson of Interboro Spirits & Ales and a crowd of about 30 guests at New York's Hotel on Rivington for this evening exploring new approaches to tea and mixology. Graham, along with Stefen Ramirez of Tea Dealers, had come up with three innovative cocktails for this event, and Graham chats with us about their unique approach to tea in mixology, borrowing pairing ideas from the culinary world, and the challenges of leveraging the flavors and textures of the teas and the other ingredients in the drinks. We also chat with Graham about the long history of tea in cocktails and its current revival. The cocktails used three teas - matcha, hojicha and rou gui - and as Andreas guides us through the tastings he talks with us about each of these teas and their use in the cocktails, the philosophy behind 29b's tea cocktail programs and the similarities between the nomenclature, flavors and other sensory experiences in tea, wine and spirits. Jesse chats with us throughout the evening about Interboro's spirits and how they interact with the other ingredients of the cocktails, and we discuss the overall flavor profiles and sensations resulting from the pairings and the various flavor components in each of the drinks. Andreas and Graham point out how the flavors and aromas of tea, spirits and mixed drinks can sometimes be nostalgic, and how Tea Dealers crafted these cocktails not only to bring out excellent results in flavor, aroma and sensation, but also to highlight some of the nostalgic and evocative qualities of the teas and the spirits. The episode also includes comments and questions from the guests at the event. More info on Interboro is at its website interboro.nyc and at its Instagram feed.
