Episode 313 - Rebecca Bratspies - Naming Gotham, The Villains, Rogues & Heroes Behind New York's Place NamesNaming Gotham: The Villains, Rogues & Heroes Behind New York's Place NamesThe Van Wyck, the Major Deegan, the Jackie Robinson, the Hutch, the Merritt, FDR Drive, or the Henry Hudson...you might drive them regularly, without really noticing that those road names are, well, names. But, who were these people? New York City's many roads, bridges, neighborhoods and institutions bear the names of a colorful assortment of people from key periods in the city's history. Learning about the people iconic Gotham landmarks are named for is a unique window into the history of the greatest city in the world. Author Rebecca Bratspies takes readers on a place-based, intimate, historical journey on a human scale.About the authorRebecca Bratspies lives with her cats, teenager and husband in Astoria Queens. Full transcription available at http://heartsofgoldpodcast.com/ Amira created a three-day program to inspire youth to get involved in civic engagement and political campaigns, regardless of their political party. Amira discusses her inspiration for the project, including her experience working with older individuals in the political landscape at a young age. She also shares a life-altering event that motivated her to pave a better path for others interested in joining campaigns. Despite not being old enough to vote, Amira remains actively involved in campaigns. Tune in to hear her inspiring story of youth empowerment and activism. More from Amira: Amira Ismail is a 17-year-old Egyptian-Palestinian teen organizer and youth leader in her community of Woodside and Astoria Queens in New York City. There, she leads the Muslim Girl Scouts of Astoria, composed of Arab youth aged 5 to 18. Working with MGSA, she has become an advocate for Girl Scouts at the council and national level, speaking at events, unveiling programs, frequently participating, and leading in virtual programming for the organization. As an intern for GSGNY, Amira created new badge guides to be used across the nation, advocated for creating Arab Heritage Month programming for the Girl Scouts events calendar, and designed the program. In the fall of 2021, she was a Muslim Community Network youth fellow where she discovered the value of civic education and developed the ability to comprehend a variety of perspectives on critical current events confidently. She also is a Malikah youth fellow where she creates programming for North African youth promoting leadership in young people through lessons in financial literacy, community organization, and political activism. Most recently, Amira has embarked on creating her program, launching earlier this year, titled Make U Listen. There, she continues her passion for civic engagement at the youth level, educating young people on how to get involved in the political process despite barriers of age, gender, and ethnicity. In speaking of the hardships she has faced in reaching her position of prominence and influence in her community, she hopes to inspire young people to advocate for their passions. Key takeaways from the episode: 1️⃣ Passion and Commitment: Amira's Gold Award project took three years to complete, and she faced challenges. However, she never gave up and stayed committed to her goal. It's a reminder that when we are passionate about something, we must trust our intuition and persevere, even when faced with obstacles. 2️⃣ Empowering Youth: Amira's project aimed to inspire and engage young people in civic engagement and political campaigns, regardless of their political party. She recognized the importance of giving youth a voice and creating opportunities for them to make a difference. It's a powerful reminder that young voices matter and can significantly impact shaping our communities. 3️⃣ Building Community: Amira's involvement in her council and various Girl Scout activities showcased the power of community. From creating a Girl Advisory Board to organizing events and programs, she actively worked towards bringing people together and creating a supportive network. It's a reminder that we can achieve more when we collaborate and support one another.

Sam and Emma host Ryan Grim, DC Bureau Chief at The Intercept, to round up the week in news. Then in the Fun Half, we have a special April Fool's Day compilation! Ryan and Sam begin by taking on the incredible work done by Amazon organizers in Staten Island and Bessemer Alabama as the unionization votes trickle in, with the former looking like a raving success, and the latter showing vast improvements over last year's vote, leading them into a discussion on the stagnation in the National Labor Relations Board, with the Right's dedication to the war on organized labor building over the last few decades as the Democrats just sort of stand around. This gets Sam and Ryan into a discussion on corporate Dems, Manchin, Sinema, and Kelly, effectively sinking the Biden Administration's nomination for the Labor Department, and the general anemia of Biden and Democratic leadership. Shifting to the other crumbling party, Ryan and Sam look to the Republicans' tantrums during the nomination of Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court, spewing talking points about her being “weak on pedophilia” alongside their typical bad faith racist attacks, and the failure of the Democrats on the committee to properly respond to and amplify the absurdity of their opponents. Next, they look to the discussions around Medicare Advantage plans, how good insurance companies are at taking what they know about you and making you pay more because of it, and the connection between Democrats' refusal to associate with Medicare (despite its popularity) goes hand in hand with Democrats' refusal to do anything to expand it (despite its efficacy), before they wrap up with a discussion on the pathways of change for the CMS. They wrap up the interview with a discussion on Manchin's coal corruption and familial fraud, the state of states' gerrymandering, and Sam dives into the supply line, and gas industry price gouging. And in the Fun Half: Sam is caught BLUE-handed (because he's a lib!) by independent journalist and Substacker Ronald Raygun as he openly drinks store-bought apple cider and makes uncannily succinct comments, before Ken, Ken & Ken (no relation to Ken & Ken in the Morning) take on Sam's estrogen elitism and soyboy stupidity. The show is wrapped up with an incredibly passionate takedown of all things corrupt by fringe genius Danny Bruce and source A. A. Seeman. Phil and Jake are joined by EDT second-timer Dave Walsh (from Space Cadet, The Loved Ones & The Explosion) to rank dogs, cats and capybaras on the List of Every Damn Thing.Get Space Cadet's record “Lion On A Leash” on Wiretap Records, listen to them on Spotify, and follow them on Instagram (@space_cadet_band). And go to one of their upcoming shows! If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook).SHOW NOTES: We mention Dave's previous band The Explosion, which he was in with friends-and-guests-of-the-pod and guests Matt Hock and Andrew Black. But we somehow fail to mention The Loved Ones, which he was in with other friend-and-guest-of-the-pod (and other Dave) Dave Hause. We couldn't find an image of Jake's monkey-on-a-skateboard The Explosion t-shirt, but you should check out the other incredible artwork of Linas Garsys. Phil has a bestiary, which is a book about all animals, translated from Latin by T.H. White (who wrote The Sword in the Stone and a lot of other things). You can read the bestiary here. If you like dogs, Dave recommends the TV show Lucky Dog. Poochie from The Simpsons is a dog who rocks the telly. He's half Joe Camel and the third Fonzerelli. He's a kung-fu hippie from the Gangster City. He's a rapping surfer. You're the fool he pities. Here's the scene from Snatch that Jake refers to. Cats' eyes emit light rays. We don't know if this is because of science or because of magic. Probably both. The CDC's FAQ on toxoplasmosis doesn't mention attraction to cats as a symptom, but it doesn't refute it either. Jake suspects the Batman Returns version of Selena Kyle aka Catwoman has toxoplasmosis. We talk about the 1980s cartoon Heathcliff and the Catillac Cats, which Phil only ever saw the second segment of growing up, because of the scheduling. The first segment was about Heathcliff doing the kind of things he does in the newspaper comic strip. The second segment was about a group of cats who lived in a junkyard, led by Riff Raff, an orange cat who wears a big white hat. In South America, guinea pigs are frequently eaten, and are called cuy, probably named after the sound they make. Phil mentions seeing them in the frozen food section at Trade Fair supermarket in Astoria Queens, NY. There was an escaped capybara in California, and friend-of-the-pod Victor made twitter for it. Join me this week as we journey to Astoria. My guests will be Bob Singleton, Executive Director of the Greater Astoria Historical Society, and Hoong Yee Lee Krakauer, Executive Director of the Queens Council on the Arts. Segment 1 The show begins with Jeff introducing the first guest, Bob Singleton, who discusses how he first was able to move from Pittsburgh to New York City through an education from NYU and how he transitioned from finance to becoming a historial, working as a bookkeeper in SoHo in the 80s. He talks about how first became affiliated with the Greater Astoria Historical Society, being involved in for about twenty-five years. The two get started with the pre-America history, the neighborhood once being a home of Native cultures, going into its history as a trading port during the colonial era. They then travel to the American Revolution, the neighborhood being a British foothold and then to the 19th century, discussing Stephen Hasley, who saw opportunity in the budding Hallet’s Cove, changing its name to Astoria. Segment 2 This segment begins with Bob talking about the mission of the Greater Astoria Historical Society and a few upcoming opportunities. The two jump into the middle of the 19th century and focus in particular on Heinrich Engelhard Steinweg, an immigrant who came with his family, who is mostly known for making pianos under ‘Steinway & Sons’ and becoming established members of the community. They then talk about a few historical landmarks within Astoria itself and how it shifted into modern times through the expansion of the subway system and becoming a commuter city. Bob outlines the motion picture history of the area and names key names and players, the city being a backdrop for several films and the neighborhood’s silk industry even playing a role in costume design. The segment ends with the ethnic history of Astoria, which is especially noted for its wide-selection of restaurants, behind which are cultures from all around the world. Segment 3 Jeff introduces the second guest of the show, Hoong Yee Lee Krakauer, reflects on growing up in Queens and discussing her artistic journey, starting with ballet, transitioning in piano and soon splitting and stretching her creative impulse into drawing and writing. She talks about her history studying music in Europe and then deciding to work toward supporting other creative minds with a website. Hoong Yee then went into how she got into writing children’s books and her future in the field as well as getting approached to assume the title she has today twenty years ago. She talks about the mission of the Queens Council of the Arts and how they go about giving out grants to support local artists in Queens. Segment 4 The final segment begins with Hoong Yee discussing basing the Council in Astoria and how she feels about being in the neighborhood, particularly loving the diverse choice of food, and what excites her about the area, Yee being fond of the creative tension in the area, watching the clashes of cultures and generation gaps. She talks about what surprises her about Astoria, curious to see how the city will make sense of the growing gentrification, as well as voicing her desires for the area including independent bookstores and less franchises talking up real estate. The show ends with Hoong Yee adding in how artists searching for a foothold in Queens can come into contact with her.

My guest today is actor and musician, Ben Paul Williams. I first met Ben about 10 years ago at a little open mic in Astoria Queens. We chat a bit about his stage career, the recent pull he’s been feeling to getting back to performing original music, and play a little catchup since the last time we spoke. So suffice to say, Ben has been one of my favorite people for quite a while. If you are in the Milwaukee area or have friends thereabouts, be sure to catch Ben at Linneman’s Riverwest Inn this Sunday, November 24th. After that, keep an eye on https://www.benpaulwilliams.com/ for more shows.
Elise and Dave launch their extended excursion into oligarchic auteurism with a pair of films from the studio whose special touch may very well have been its hands-off approach to directorial oversight. Certainly Behind the Make-Up (aka The Feeder) makes a very interesting companion piece to Dorothy Arzner’s later masterpiece Dance, Girl, Dance (1940) – a film discussed on this very feed earlier in 2019. It stars William Powell, Kay Francis, Fay Wray, and Hal Skelly, none of whom would wind up becoming intimately associated with Paramount (although an argument could be made for Francis). Then we turn our attention to that great cinematic marvel of the early sound era – the picture that proved talkies could move! In fact, filmed out of Paramount’s Astoria Queens facility, Applause rambles magnificently all over pre-Chrysler Building and Empire State Building Manhattan. It’s also damned moving, with a performance from Helen Morgan that’ll leave you wondering why any of us were born. Time Codes: 0h 1m 00s: Behind the Make-Up aka The Feeder (dirs.. Gianluca Tramontana, host of RFB's Sitting With Gianluca, (every Wed., 6pm) /https://radiofreebrooklyn.com/show/sitting-with-gianluca/ hangs with Meghan Taylor (lead vocals and Damian Eckstein (bass) of the band GIFTSHOP, while Dr. Lisa takes a vacation. http://www.giftshoptheband.com They are a fabulous and wildly popular band out of Astoria Queens and the music played on this show is not to be missed! Just so nothing is missing, Dr. Lisa prepares a phone interview write-up anyway, which you can read HERE: PSYCHOLOGICAL INTAKE REPORT from Dr. Lisa for GIFTSHOP, The Band Giftshop is an accomplished band. They have been around for 12 years, have produced 4 EP albums, available on all streaming platforms as well as some old school vinyl and CDs. They have professional representation and are members of the indie label Tarbeach Records. They have a dedicated following in Astoria, Queens and Manhattan which allows them to choose when and where they will play. Out of 5 musicians and 1 manager there are 2 married couples, which I feel contributes to the stability of the band. There is no denying that the band members care for and support each other in an unconditional loving way. I have a sense that all of the band members are highly dedicated to the success and future growth of the band, so much so, that in managing some more personally difficult behaviors, each band member may have an emotional outlet outside of the band, or rely on one person in the band more than the others. Therefore, there are no obvious conflicts within the band. Creative people listening—please NOTE. This is an excellent dynamic if you have any interest in success and creative development. However, it does not make for a juicy band memoir or obviously salacious radio interview, so I will ask my highly sensitive and talented co-host, Giancarlo to dig deep. BAND MEMBERS Damian Eckstein: lead grown-up, bassist His wife, Nicole, band manager, associate grown-up Meghan Taylor: -band front women. As the face of the band, she carries most of the responsibility for delivering the vibe of the band as well as fan wrangling Megan is married to the guitarist, Matt Santoro. Though Megan clearly generates a lot of sexual energy on stage, it seems as her and Matt have a relationship that is mature enough to see past this as in any way threatening to their relationship Nichole Onopiak: Keyboard Jordan Kramer: Drums

In anticipation of his own upcoming solo concert debut, award-winning musical theatre writer Joel B. New sat down with three respected artists in the cabaret world to ask them about the impetus for getting into cabaret, what they’ve learned, and what inspires them. Nikki MacCallum is an actress, writer, and cabaret artist living in New York City. She’s originally from the Boston area and holds a BM from NYU. As a cabaret artist she’s performed at venues throughout NYC including 54 Below, The Metropolitan Room and Lincoln Center. Last fall, Nikki was a featured artist at Birdland along side Donna McKechnie and Jerry Mitchell. She recently attended the Eugene O’Neill Cabaret Conference directed by John McDaniel where she started developing “Familiar Things,” her most recent cabaret, which earned her second MAC nomination. Melanie Kann earned her BFA in Drama at NYU'S Tisch School of the Arts where she concentrated in Musical Theatre at CAP 21 Conservatory, and also double majored in Broadcast Journalism. When she isn't singing a showtune, odds are she is either out running an inappropriate amount of miles in prep for her next marathon, coaching young runners with Run4Fun youth running club, or slingin' sneakers at Jack Rabbit Sports in Park Slope. Her show “Songs for Square Pegs” just enjoyed its second incarnation at the Metropolitan Room. A jack-of-all trades theatre person, Thomas Honeck built sets for HBO, earned his Equity card playing Harry McAfee in “Bye, Bye Birdie, " designed lights for various theatres throughout the city, taught at the Yale Cabaret Conference, and toured the country with The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Thomas made his cabaret debut in 2004 with “Going On Faith… ” for which he was nominated for a MAC Award. He won two years later for his follow-up show “Dreaming Wide Awake.” Thomas has been an integral part at the Duplex for 19 years and has been the proud Program Director for its Cabaret Theatre since 2006. He has recently collaborated with his creative partner & director, Lisa Moss, on their 3rd show together, “Dancing With Death,” which can be seen at the Duplex on May 27th & July 12th at 7pm. GaptoothDiva chats with phenomenally gifted singer and poet, J'Lee Maldonado about pursuing her dreams in music, poetry and social work, while trying to live a “regular” life.Born January 23, 1983, Jennifer Lee Maldonado aka J'Lee is a 27 yr. old female singer/writer from Astoria Queens, NY. J'Lee is of mixed heritage and was raised by a single mother. Growing up was no easy task for J'Lee so she turned to school, basketball, music, singing, and writing poetry as therapeutic outlets. J'Lee has stated that “a song is just a prayer waiting to be spoken and a prayer is just a song waiting to be sung,” having gone through life with this belief in mind, J'Lee maintains that the ability to be creative has kept her grounded throughout the trials and tribulations she faced during childhood and adolescent years. J'Lee graduated from Skidmore College in 2005 with a B.A. in Government/Law & Society and more recently graduated from VCU in Richmond, VA (where she currently resides) with a Masters Degree in Clinical Social Work. While she is passionate about helping the likes of all people and animals (more specifically pit-bulls), J'Lee considers herself a “contemporary ghetto fabulous hippy” – a compassionate humanitarian who believes that we need to “be the change we seek in the world.” Despite academic accomplishments, J'Lee feels as if something is still missing, as if she's losing her creative self and true purpose in the day to day hustle known as life, work and bills – and no longer wants to ignore her passion for music.
