Yes, we had to do it. Hopped up on rumour and speculation, Andy and Felix dive into the exciting world of baseless watch predictions and shamelessly speculate on what Rolex, Patek Philippe, Cartier and their pals are going to unveil in Geneva in just a few day's time. On top of that, we ponder the meta trends that we're going to see emerge in the industry, including "less value for the same money" and "more restraint with flashes of insanity". The recent wildfires have shaken Angelenos to their core and rightly so. I imagine it is not dissimilar from those who have experienced fires in Hawaii, other parts of California or elsewhere. Or those who suffered through hurricanes, floods, wind events or any other major natural disaster. I think this was different. I've shared this story with you but for the sake of those new to the show, I'll share it again to make a point. That point is that while wildfires in Southern California are not new, nor are earthquakes, floods, or civil unrest. The wildfire is an emerging threat that has taken decades to reach this point but has now reached year round catastrophic status. After spending a week plus watching this unfold from half the country away from Los Angeles, I find myself asking a question that probably isn't really that original. Why is this happening over and over with very little changed. Fires in Southern California. Hurricanes in Texas and Florida. Tornados in the midwest. Flooding in the mid Atlantic and southern U.S., Because that is the natural way of things in these parts of the country. In Southern California, the Santa Ana winds are nothing new. The manner in which they spread embers is not new. Droughts in this area are new. Much of this area is a dessert. Always has been. Earthquakes have ALWAYS been a part of the region. The question that I see so many asking is, “why does this keep happening?” For the reasons listed above. And, probably the most important reason, greed and an overwhelming urge by public officials to build more, grow faster… A few statements we should probably retire include, “we're going to build back better” and “our thoughts and prayers are with the victims.” I believe that everyone would be better off if those who know nothing about a subject would be quiet about it. It was 1983, my family was living in the far Southeast corner of Chatsworth in the San Fernando Valley. As far back as you could get without being in the mountains that separated the San Fernando Valley from Simi Valley. We raised horses, Arabians. My sister showed them and I cleaned up after them. It was a crappy deal and the reason I still don't like horses. It was a Saturday, just came back from a Pop Warner football game. By the time we smelled smoke, it was too late. I had on a pair of board shorts and cowboy boots when I made it down to the barn. Hopped on one horse, had another in tow, my sister had the same and by the time we made it to the gate, the ridge behind our house was on fire. My mom drove the f-350 with a four horse trailer to get the more skittish horses out and my dad stayed back to do what he could to save the structures. I rode that horse for 23 hours straight. When it was safe to return, the fire burned right up to the door. But no further. My Dad had several stories from that day, it included the car full of guys that drove up to the driveway and told him they were the owners, there to pick up their belongings. The way my dad told the story, they got out of the car, four of them and started to walk up on him. He drew his .38, informed them that ‘it was his home and he and his 6 friends we going to keep it safe.' At which time the left. Later that year, my father removed brush around the perimeter of the house and installed rain birds on the roof of the house and the barn. This was my first experience with anything like that. Sure, earthquakes, I have always be accustomed to those, but fires, floods, that's different. We now find ourselves in a state of constant emergency across California and beyond. Fires are no longer seasonal in California, nor are floods. Nor do they happen in places where they have in the past. Natural disasters are showing in the form of fires, floods, cyclones, hurricane, tornado, derecho, like the one I told you about that hit us here in Tulsa in 2023. I think most people have mistakenly placed their faith and hope in leaders and politicians to pass legi...
Hi friends, happy Tuesday! Friends... I often wonder what drives someone to cross every fricken line imaginable. Like where do we, as people, go wrong? It tends to be head trauma... but sometimes... It's other things that drive people to go off the deep end. Well, in this episode, we dive into the chilling story of Marc Vincent Sappington, the Kansas City killer whose shocking crimes and disturbing acts of cannibalism left a community absolutely destroyed. Hopped up on drugs and paranoia, Marc's downward spiral turned deadly in ways no one could have seen coming. Today, I'm going to unpack Marc's life, what motivated him, and the terrifying chaos he unleashed. Sometimes these stories keep me up at night. This, my friends, is one of them. Also, let me know who you want me to talk about next time. In 1974, Jim spotted a freight train full of wide-open, empty box cars and wondered if he might be able to sneak inside for an afternoon joy ride. Fast forward a few years, and train hopping was his favorite mode of travel. He even got Nancy and some friends in on the fun. This is a truly wild story that we couldn't wait to share.

Happy Holidays from Purpose and Performance Group! We hope you are having an incredible Holiday Season! Enjoy this bonus episode! Twas the Night Before the Office Holiday Party 'Twas the night before the office holiday party, and all through the house, The leader was pacing, consumed by stress and doubt. They had to face their team at the party, and didn't know what to say, About the coming recession, and the challenges that lay ahead after new year's day. The kids were all nestled, snug in their beds, While visions of squishmallows danced in their heads. But the leader lay awake, feeling overwhelmed and drained, Wondering how they would get through the party, let alone sustain their business and refrain From spilling the beans about the struggles they feared, And the challenges that lay ahead, most likely in the coming year. They knew their team was counting on them, to provide cheer and hope, But they just didn't know how to keep smiling, through what felt like an existential joke. Suddenly, from downstairs, there came a knock on the door, The leader hesitated, then rushed down, not wanting to ignore. But as they opened the door, to their great surprise, Stood Santa Claus, dressed as a businessman, in a red, green, and white tie. "Don't be afraid, my dear leader," Santa said with a grin, "I've come to share some wisdom, let us begin. You see, the key to leading with hope and resilience, Is vulnerability, honesty, and clear purpose, to enable persistence." The leader's eyes lit up, as they listened with intent, Finally seeing a new way to prevent The stress and overwhelm that had been weighing them down, They knew exactly what to do, and a smile began to drown The doubts and fears that had been consuming their mind, They knew that with Santa's wisdom, they could leave all that behind. And with that, Santa chuckled and waved goodbye, Hopped into his sleigh, and disappeared into the sky. Next morning the leader rose with a new sense of pride, Determined to lead with vulnerability, honesty, and purpose, open and wide. They arrived at the office, feeling light and free, And spent the day reflecting, clarifying, and their purpose beginning to see. Finally 'twas the night of the party, and the leader was ready, The snacks were being eaten, and ugly sweaters were sweaty. The team was nestled all snug in their places, While the leader stood before them, ready to meet their gazes. "I know we've faced some challenges," the leader began to say, "But I want you to know, that we'll get through this, come what may." They talked about recession, talent retention, and the struggles they faced, But also about not letting fear distract them from running their own, special race. The leader took a deep breath, and looked out at the team, Feeling welling gratitude, and a tear in their eye began to gleam. They knew that their team was more than just a group of resources, They were people, with hopes and dreams, with untapped energy resources. "Deep down we all want more than just a paycheck," the leader said with a smile, "We want to do work that matters, and to feel a sense of belonging all the while. We're not just a group of people, trading our hours for cash, We're a team, with a shared purpose, and an opportunity we shouldn't let pass." The team smiled, and listened close, feeling a sense of pride, Knowing that they were part of something bigger, and that they could always confide In their leader, and with one other, they could create a new song. Together, they could tackle any challenge, make one another better, and belong. "We're all in this together," the leader reminded with a smile, "And with honesty, vulnerability, and a clear authentic purpose, we'll go the extra mile." The team nodded in agreement, feeling uplifted and ready to slay Any challenge that lay ahead, on this, the most festive of days. As the party rocked on, and the team made merry, Santa watched from the office window, his heart feeling very Full of joy in the hope that radiated from the leader and team. He knew that they were well on their way to achieving a dream. And later, as the boss walked into the night, They called back to the team with all their might, "On spreadsheets, on dashboards, on emails and calls! On production, on deadlines, on sales and all! Aligned on our purpose, we'll refocus when we fall! Now bring it on, bring it on, bring it on all!" Hopped on a plane to Berlin to attend a yestheory meetup, which last for three days, followed by the premiere of Project Iceman on the forth day. I've built a pretty good momentum of meeting new friends during my trip, so meeting hundreds of people feel natural to me! And I did quite enjoy it. But two straight days of networking proved to be too draining for me. I ended up avoiding the crowd on the third day, but making myself re-join them on the forth day was so worth it. I'll tell you more in the next episode. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/poetic-cantonese/message
In this episode of Hoptalk, Gary chats with Carey Jonker, owner and head brewer of Transmission Brewing Company. If you're outside the city of Ventura, there's a decent chance you haven't heard of Transmission Brewing. That's because it's pretty rare to find their beers outside of their taproom, Toppers Pizza locations, and a handful of local accounts. But Transmission has impressed us since day one, earning a placement on our Hopped 25 list of the best craft beer in Southern California. Basically, we think they're killing it and that you should know more about them. So in this conversation, Gary digs into Carey's background, his connection to Toppers, the buildout of their incredible brewery and taproom, their exceptional lager program, his hobbies of restoring vintage trailers and racing dwarf cars, the future of Transmission Brewing, and much more. Keep up with Carey and Transmission Brewing at transmissionbrewing.com and visit their brewery taproom in Ventura at 1098 E Front St.
