On this episode of Out d'Coup LIVE, I am thrilled to welcome Erin Wallace to the program. We'll be talking about craft brewing's reckoning in the wake of the flood of stories about misogyny, racism, sexual harassment and assault in the craft brewing industry. The catalyst for the latest round of stories follows an Instagram post by Brienne Allen, a production manager and brewer at Notch Brewing in Salem, MA. Hundreds of women in the industry responded by telling their experiences of sexism and harassment. The attention has led to the resignation managers/owners at several well-known breweries, Tired Hands being perhaps the most noteworthy locally. Erin Wallace is one of the Philadelphia region's premier beer experts. The founder and longtime owner of the renowned beer-centric bar and restaurant, Devil's Den, just south of Washington Avenue in South Philadelphia, Wallace is a fixture on Philadelphia's ever-growing beer scene. Wallace is a self-taught beer connoisseur and has an extensive knowledge of local and imported craft beers. Former long time board member of Philly Loves Beer and Philly Beer Week, Wallace is also the regional founder & co-leader of the Philadelphia chapter of the Pink Boots Society — a non-profit organization with international membership which supports women working in the brewing profession, especially in creating craft beer. Erin attended Baltimore School for the Arts, and Moore College of Art and Design in Philadelphia. Her love for beer developed from her time as a server and bartender in various bars and restaurants in Philadelphia. She opened the Devil's Den in 2008. ‘The Den' is known for its excellent and diverse array of craft beer, curated by Wallace, as well as a dynamic events schedule. She is noted as one of Philadelphia's top craft beer bar owners. Devil's Den has won accolades from multiple publications and has appeared in Philadelphia magazine and on Foobooz's Top 50 Bars list multiple times. We are back and we survived the gas shortage of 2021! Israel and Hamas have agreed to a ceasefire after more than a week of intense violence that led to at least 243 Palestinian deaths - more than 60 were childrent - and 12 Israeli deaths, as reported by the BBC. Looks like that ceasefire may not last the day.  Republican Senators will not get on board legislation calling for a bi-partisan commission looking into the January 6 insurrection. Rep. Tim Ryan of Ohio gives Republicans a lashing.  New reporting in ProPublica shows that the Trump era helped launch a new breed of donor who now have significant influence over the Republican Party.  According to a newly compiled report by the EPA, climate change is already having a significant impact on the U.S. - not to mention the rest of the world. EPA administrator Michael Regan said, “There is no small town, big city or rural community that is unaffected by the climate crisis...Americans are seeing and feeling the impacts up close, with increasing regularity.” As reported in the New York Times, those impacts include bigger wildfires that start earlier in the year; warmer seas; more frequent heat waves; persistent flooding; and, even ragweed pollen season is starting earlier. Ford launches what may be a game changer in the electric vehicle market. On Wednesday, Ford unveiled the all-electric F150 Lightning, which performs better than combustion engine models in many metrics. However, its $39,974 pricetag that is likely to mark a turning point. At just under $40,000 the F150 Lightning is competitive with Tesla’s base model Model 3, currently the most popular electric vehicle in the country.  The big F150 lightning reveal follows Biden’s visit to the Ford plant in Dearborn, MI the day before, to pitch his EV plan. The EV plan, which is folded into Biden’s infrastructure bill, calls for $174 billion in consumer tax credits, support of US battery production, and funds to retool car plants to assemble EV’s.   This may sound like a broken record player, but progressives across Pennsylvania once again celebrated huge primary victories. Larry Krasner won in a landslide against FOP endorsed candidate Carlos Vega.  The FOP and other pro-police PACs spent $250,000 to unseat Krasner only to lose by a 2-1 margin On top of Krasner’s victory, Krasner gained a lot of allies in the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas.  Seven of the eight open seats went to nominees endorsed by Reclaim Philadelphia, the Working Families Party and other criminal justice reform organizations.  Out west, House Representative Ed Gainey defeated Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto.  Gainey gained traction as a movement candidate following the murder of George Floyd and the Black Lives Matter demonstrations and was backed by SEIU Healthcare PA and groups like One Pennsylvania.  He will become the first black mayor in Pittsburgh’s history. Tyler Titus (they/them) won their primary for Erie County Executive in the far northwest as an out transgender person.  They will faceoff against the Republican nominee in November and have the opportunity to become the first transgender person to hold an elected exectuvie position in the country.    Ezra Nanes crushed his primary election to become the next mayor of State College.  He will become the first Jewish mayor in the city’s history and his victory only highlights how progressive movement is turning Centre County into a solid blue county. In not so progressive news, but shocking to say the least, Wanda Williams defeated Harrisburg’s mayor Eric Papenfuse.  Williams raised $30k and was vastly outspent by Eric Papenfuse, Dave Schankweiler and Otto Banks.  Wanda won by linking Papenfuse to his Republican donors and to Schankweiler and Banks, who were Republicans running as Democrats.  House Representative Marty Flynn wins his special election to replace former Senator John Blake.  The district has been trending red for some time, but Flynn was able to hold onto the seat.  Blake left the Pennsylvania Senate to work for Congressman Matt Cartwright earlier this year  In other news, go grab your spurs cowboy! Doug Mastriano is preparing his run for Governor and is already taking shots at Lou Barletta’s extremely white teeth.  Mastriano held a fundraiser with Rudy Giuliani last week and was spotted posing for photographs with an insurrectionist wanted for spraying bear spray at the capitol police during the January 6th attack on the capitol.  PA Senate Democratic Caucus continue hearings on PASSHE consolidation plan. This week’s hearings included testimony by faculty, staff, students, university leaders, and community members.  Cyril Mychalejko’s new piece just dropped, saying “Only a political uprising can save PA’s higher education system.”  Mychalejko echos what we’ve been saying for years on this program: only organizing and direct action gets the goods.  In his first hearings after taking over as NASA’s Chief administrator, Bill Nelson pledges to move forward with the Artemis moon program and Mars ambitions while stoking fears that China is on course to dominate the future of space exploration.  China becomes the second country to successfully “soft-land” a rover on Mars. The Zhurong rover successfully landed last Friday, May 14. On Wednesday, the rover sent back some selfies and images of Mars. The Zhurong rover is part of China’s Tianwen-1 mission that arrived in Martian orbit back in February. A little further in the weeds, SpaceX grabs the contract for Firefly Aerospace’s Blue Ghost lunar lander in 2023. According to Firefly, “Blue Ghost will be carrying 10 payloads for NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) task order 19D mission, in addition to separately contracted commercial payloads.” Yes, the next round of Moon exploration is really a thing, folks.  In some ‘not so good’ beer news, Tired Hands’ owner Jean Broillet IV was pushed out of day-to-day operations by employees for allegations of racism, sexism and unsafe working conditions throughout the pandemic.  When confronted, he stepped down immediately.  The staff posted on the company's Instagram account that they will keep the brewery running as they look for new leadership.  This story comes as a reckoning is happening throughout the craft beer industry. It’s Sour Sunday this Sunday at Free Will Brewing and they have a new release to celebrate: Catch Lightning; DDH Love Letter from the 90s; Kragle Light. And, Free Will just opened a new tap room in Souderton, PA at the Broad Street Theater!

After discussing the value of fests through brewer eyes (and the impetus to host one), the guys talk about Adam breaking into the brewing industry as an early employee Tired Hands, later becoming head brewer at Trillium, and his experience opening a brewery in a city he knew very little about. This one's a little shorter (plane to catch) and noisier (recorded in working brewery) than usual, but Adam effortlessly provides a ton of valuable perspective, and will make Yankees proud with a perfectly executed Three Bay that involves some famous Charlestonians.

Garage Project’s Hāpi Festival and Symposium was held earlier this year in the lead-up to New Zealand’s hop harvest. The symposium and festival form the public-facing side of a hop-breeding initiative Garage Project has undertaken with New Zealand’s Freestyle Farms, and with backing from the country’s Ministry for Primary Industries. Over the course of a day in Wellington’s famous Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, speakers such as Alexandra Nowell from Three Weavers Brewing Company, Matt Brynildson from Firestone Walker Brewing Company, and Paul Jones from Cloudwater Brew Co. gave talks with a focus on hops. Good Beer Hunting was there to capture a slice of the discussion.   Afterwards, the invited breweries poured for a small festival of 1,000 people. It was a surreal situation: seeing world-renowned breweries like Trillium, Other Half, Hill Farmstead. Tired Hands and Cellarmaker serving beer in New Zealand’s national museum.  *** “Crucial Taunt” is a great name for a fictional band, a beer, and a hacky-sack team—at least that’s what Matt Tarpey from The Veil and I decided when we caught up at the Hāpi Festival and Symposium. When I saw him pass me in the symposium hall, my immediate thought was, “Damn, that’s a nice Veil jacket.” Then I wondered why he looked familiar to me. It’s because The Veil was profiled in 2016 on Good Beer Hunting, complete with some incredible photography from Cory Smith. That story went live soon after the brewery launched; since then, Matt’s talents in the brewhouse have helped The Veil build a sterling reputation for hop-forward beers. In this fourth and final episode from our Hāpi Festival and Symposium, Matt also shares the story of his first helicopter experience, and even gives us a scoop on some expansion plans for the brewery. We learn that in part three of our Hāpi Festival and Symposium podcast series.  The Bruery, from Placentia, California is not a brewery that I had ever associated with hop-forward beers, so I was curious to know why they were at a hop symposium. It turns out, however, that The Bruery recently launched a side project focused on hoppy beers called Offshoot Beer Co., and its innovation manager Andrew Bell was on hand to tell us all about it.  As it is The Bruery, we also got to talking about Imperial Stouts. San Francisco’s SoMa neighborhood looked a bit different in 2013, when Cellarmaker Brewing Company opened here, on Howard Street. Tech companies were moving in, and the city’s new young and affluent workers moved into a part of San Francisco plagued by homelessness and drug use. It might have seemed difficult place to open a brewery, let alone any public-facing business, but Cellarmaker broke out, quickly gaining recognition as one of the city’s best breweries. In their five years in business, they made fast friends out of breweries like the Rare Barrel, Tired Hands, and Green Cheek, and boosted the city’s reputation as a world-class brewing destination. These days, its small taproom is bustling seemingly every night of the week, attracting IPA fanatics, devotees of their ever-rotating tap list lineup, and those who just appreciate the bartenders’ affinity for music by Dolly Parton and Carly Rae Jepsen. Now, with a barrel program in full force, they’re expanding their menu even wider. Fans irked by crowds at their taproom had long hoped that Cellarmaker would expand with a second location and in 2018, that wish came true. In the late summer, co-founder Connor Casey finally announced that the brewery had found an additional home in Bernal Heights, complete with an oven ready to pump out fluffy Detroit-style pizzas to complement their beers. It’s here in that space that I met Casey, co-founding brewer Tim Sciascia and Cellarmaker’s House of Pizza brew system manager Aaron Wittman as they taste tested some new pizza recipes being considered for the brewpub’s new menu. The new spot’s opening is just around the corner, and they clearly couldn’t be more excited. This is Connor Casey, Tim Sciascia, and Aaron Wittman of Cellarmaker Brewing Company. Listen in.

Evan, Mark, Ryan and special guest Bryan get you schooled on making a great charcuterie board so guests are never disappointed.  Bryan certainly drops knowledge on how to best pair meats, cheeses, and accoutrements with our beers while we crack a Side Project La Ruche.  Then we dip into the "milkshake" IPA style where Tired Hands are the leaders and others follow suit such as Bearded Iris Brewing "Mood Ring".  We also enjoy breaking down a blind taste test provided by Ryan.  Beyond that, we talk local beer projects and events such as the new Bearded Owl release just in time for St. Patrick's Day.  Thanks again to Bryan for his input and we look forward to next time when we interview Dan on his experience at the recent Great Michigan Beer Festival in Grand Rapids.  Cheers from P+P!!

As it does so often, Geoffrey Williams' craft beer journey started with a Mr. Beer Kit.  As students at Georgia Southern, Williams and friends Haley and Nathan Cowan, they brewed beer and experimented with fermentation.  Fast forward, and Eventide Brewery is now Grant Park's brewery of choice.  With a core brand of "Drinking Beers" (Kolsch, Pale Ale, IPA) on bottle shop shelves and a rotating tap of seasonals and one-offs in the tap room, Eventide has become a gathering place for locals in the Atlanta neighborhood.  Speaking of gathering place, we broadcast on-location at Your Pie Perimeter. Not only are they one of our awesome sponsors, but they sling some great pie, with an amazing tap list. Thanks for their hospitality!  Truck and Tap Beers of The Week:  Eventide's The A IPA Eventide's newest seasonal, Red Headed Haley We also sampled beers from Sole and Tired Hands, thanks to our awesome friend Mac Maguire New cans from Arches - Queens Weiss (Hefeweizen) and Southern Bel (Belgian Pale Ale) Headlines (Sponsored by Your Pie Perimeter):  Budweiser and Lyft offering free rides this weekend Red Brick continuing animal series w/Penguin Pale Ale Prattville considering downtown entertainment (open container) district. Mike is an extremely talented pen and ink illustrator who we came to learn about due to the powerful can art that he does with Tired Hands Brewing out of Ardmore, PA. His black and white work is impressive and strong which made this interview even more enjoyable for us, especially given the fact that we are also members of the Color Blind club. It is a small piece of the story, but one that gives insight into the artist and his path. Check out this episode to learn more about this incredible artist and how he has become an active member of the Tired Hands family.

Chicagoans have long been lucky jerks to be able to call Half Acre their own, and now with the mysterious new Heavy Gem project between Half Acre and Tired Hands, it just got even better. We sample some newer Half Acre offerings before trying to get to the bottom of the mystifying Heavy Gem and their obfuscating, trippy website. We also talk about the awfulness that is Hawk Harrelson, a literal Craig situation, and our upcoming Saisonathon event at Pub Royale on May 22nd. (Saisonathongs not included.)   Half Acre - Tuna (Extra Pale Ale) Half Acre - Double Daisy Cutter (Double Pale Ale) Half Acre - Big Hugs Salted Chocolate Espresso (Imperial Stout) Heavy Gem - Humanimal Stasis (Double IPA) Heavy Gem - Virga (Ale fermented in oak barrels)

We also hear about a best man speech that didn't stand a chance, Jay Rose and Rob's CBC shenanigans, Dan admits he's a bad producer, and somehow Richard becomes the judge of Jay Rose's Stone Brewing event disappearing act. Richard as a judge, yep, you read that correctly. This is a big one, it clocks in at right about an hour and a half. A big show for a big birthday extravaganza!

We’ll talk Kurt Vonnegut, Stephen Tobolowsky, and our intentions to copyright “Hopularity.” I’m a horse.
