Data storyteller Mike Cisneros sat down with Iron Viz champion, Tableau Visionary, and self-described “data jackalope” Joshua Smith to talk about how folklore—the study of how information is communicated, primarily through informal means—provides us a fascinating lens through which to examine how data visualization has evolved and continues to develop, both as a discipline and as a community of practitioners. You'll learn how “best practices” emerge, transform and persist (or are discarded) over time, how informal communication and culture can have unexpected effects on how our work is received, the inextricable links between belief and “objective” data, and how a storyteller can position themselves to be most effective. Several folklorists were mentioned in the course of this discussion. Dan Ben-Amos defined folklore as “Artistic communication in small groups.”  Lynne S. As its Iron Viz season we talked to Iron Viz Europe finalist Sarah Bartlett about what its like to compete on stage and what it takes to get to the finals. 

Luke and Ann are joined by Mark Jewett, VP of Product, Partner, and Community Marketing at Tableau Software. The three discuss how Tableau's strong user community drives the direction of the product. They then venture into discussing Tableau Blueprint, a new framework designed to help organizations be data-driven. They wrap with discussing how working with data is positioned in higher education and the upcoming Iron Viz contest.

You might have heard of Iron Chef, the popular cooking show where the competition is based on secret ingredients. The Iron Viz competition is like that, but with health care data. There’s often information buried within that data that can help in preventive care and in treating patients. But, the information is no use if people can’t access it or share it in an understandable way. The visual software company ‘Tableau’ pioneered one way to tackle these issues. Teams at Iron Viz are given data and are tasked to create a “viz,” or visual, that can bring new insight to the data. Part of the idea is to have average people become a kind of “citizen data scientist.” Our guests in this episode of HealthChangers have brought this idea, and Iron Viz, to health care.

In this episode Luke and Ann talk about Tableau's annual visualization competition Iron Viz held at the conference. They're joined by two guests, 2016 and 2017 Iron Viz champions Curtis Harris and Tristan Guillevin. Expect a deep dive into why they participated, aspects of the judging process, and what each of them are working on.
