Neil begins by outlining the story of the stuffed sparrow that is one of the more unusual items in the MCC Museum and one that has a link to Glamorgan as the ball that was bowled immediately before the sparrow was discovered was bowled by Jahangir Khan, father of Majid Khan, Glamorgan's first overseas player. The discussion then moves on to books and, in particular, the books that have been written, wholly or in the main, after research at the MCC library and archive. Today I am delighted to have on the show arguably one of the greatest and most successful squash coaches of all time Rahamt Khan.Rahmat has a superb story and journey to tell and he brings it to life wonderfully in this episode and I feel so lucky and grateful to have spent this time and to have this conversation with him. Rahmat was the coach of legendary squash player Jahangir Khan. Who famously won an incredible 555 matches IN A ROW! The greatest winning steak in sporting history for any individual or team and has since had books and features made about this incredible feat. Rahmat had a large part to play in this record as well as the other titles Jahangir achieved most notably 10 British Open titles and 6 World Championship Titles. Rahmat himself was a top professional player back in the late 70s and early 80s but had decided to end his playing career early in order to coach and mentor Jahangir due to the tragic and untimely deaths of Jahangir broth Torsam whilst playing a squash match. Rahmat and Torsam were incredibly close friends and this untimely death of Torsam took everyone by surprise and changed the course of squash history. He shares this story in great detail.During our conversation we delve into the mind and mental state of what made Jahangir such an icon and achieve all the success he did. Rahmat shares some of the intense and brutal training that was performed and how the motivation of playing for Torsam was a guiding force in regard to them both turning up day in and day out and doing everything for a greater cause. This is such a wonderfully beautiful description of a very special time in squash history and I am sure you are going to enjoy this conversation as much as I did recording it. Thank you kindly to Rahmat taking the time to sit with me and please do sit back and enjoy what we discuss today. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Winning streaks are the crown jewel for individuals and teams. There are few who can ignore a prolonged winning streak. Jahangir Khan was the most winning athlete of all time. In his prestigious career he won 555 matches in a row. He was a force to be reckoned with in the world of Squash. Before he could win all of those matches he had a streak of a different kind, the consecutive streak. Cal Ripkin Jr. was the model of the consecutive streak. He played 2,632 Major League Baseball games in a row. The Baltimore Orioles didn't win every game that Cal played, but he was in every game that they could win. The first victory of any victory is showing up.
Más que un cacho de carne - Un deportista es practicamente un ser humano. La historia del squashista pakistaní Jahangir Khan
Since 2002, Adil Maqbool has maintained the UAE's #1 ranking, and after some time away from the pro game he's back playing again. One of the game's most talented with the racket, he's had his hands full over the past few years juggling parenthood duties (father of three), a new business (IT related), and his pro squash aspirations. His squash backstory, teaming up with his father, is unconventional if not intriguing and unique. We talk about this and then get into a wide-ranging discussion on the Super Series finals in Dubai, junior development and how Pakistan can put itself back on the map, a topic in which Rod Gilmore and Alan Thatcher quoted his father Maqbool Khawaja in the book Jahangir Khan 555.
For squash players who grew up playing the game in the 80s, we grew up idolizing Jahangir Khan, and synonymous with Jahangir was his iconic coach Rahmat Khan. Rahmat helped guide Jahangir to a record 10 British Open titles, and the backstory behind their success is one we can all learn from. Rahmat describes the challenges Jahangir had early on following the death of his brother Torsem, and how this ultimately laid the groundwork for the unwavering discipline, focus and professionalism that characterized the Jahangir/Rahmat partnership throughout the years. Rahmat talks of the Jansher v. Jahangir rivalry,JK's highly successful foray into the North American hardball scene, how JK managed to remain injury free through all those years, the current state of squash in Pakistan, and his take on the current era of squash.
