In this episode of Develop This, Dennis Fraise and Mark Perna discuss the importance of building one's dreams at any stage of life. They explore the distinction between interest and passion, emphasizing that while interest can be easily found, passion is cultivated over time through resilience and commitment. The conversation also highlights the significance of engagement and self-motivation in creating a competitive advantage in both personal and professional realms. Mark shares his philosophy of embracing discomfort and daring to dream, encouraging listeners to take actionable steps toward their goals. Competitive Advantage Track Takeaways You're either building your dream or someone else's. Life really begins when you carve out time for yourself. Interest is something you can trip over; passion is built over time. Show up five minutes early, stay five minutes late, and care. Be so good they can't ignore you. Dare to dream and embrace discomfort. You have all the time that there is; it's how you use it that matters. To stand out, do what others won't do. Say yes, and then figure out how. Inspiring young people is critically important for economic development.

My name is Ashton. Thanks for stopping by. I am a writer and author, entrepreneur and consultant in the wellness space, yoga and meditation guide. I am obsessed with animals (dogs and donkeys especially) and can't wait to one day own a farm where all my rescues can live happily ever after. Being badly bullied in school led to self-worthiness issues, and I attached accomplishment with worth. The more I did, the more worthy I would become. (Spoiler alert: we don't ‘achieve' worthiness – we simply are – it's innate). So, I earned my MFA in Creative NonFiction Writing and have since published three books. Dedicated to sharing mind-body-life wellness, I created YouAligned.com and app YouAligned Classes. Yet as I was building my career of helping others, I was inwardly self-sabotaging. I started playing small in life, afraid of failure and rejection. This experience both cost and taught me a lot. And I wouldn't be where I am today, able to teach and speak on what I do, if it wasn't for all that I've gone through. I am candid with my success, my mistakes, and all that I have learned along the way. Most importantly, I have distilled all of these experiences, lessons and insights, into my current work as an author, consultant, teacher and leader. 6 R'S OF THE SELF MOTIVATION CYCLE MOTIVATION CYCLE: REALIZE - RESOLVE - RESTATE - RESTART - REACH - RESULTS REALIZE - vocalize your awareness that what you wanted didn't happen - you missed the target/ goal/ opportunity RESOLVE - you must find the passion, confidence and commitment to keep on anyway in the face of perceived failure and profound obstacles RESTATE - you must frame the story of ‘missed expectations' as a learning experience and apply those lessons to future goal setting instruction and plans - acknowledge every small success as starter fluid for momentum RESTART - you must redouble your effort, action and focus with more intensity than before (apply 10X Rule Thinking here) REACH - Success is like swimming- you have to stretch and pull with each arm repeatedly until you reach your target - one arm won't do it. Doggie paddles won't do it. Survival swimming won't get you there. RESULTS - What looks like LUCK to others is the result of perpetual plan and persistent action continually recreating achievement and success momentum. Whether it's a New Years Theme we choose to go with (which we recommend at Happy Life Studios) or New Years Resolutions, if we do them right, they will change our life. However, setting them isn't enough. Oftentimes our themes, goals or resolutions won't happen on their own. Like we haave said several times "If we let it happen it won't happen". To see these goals and ideas accomplished we will have to push them, prod them, and/or poke them just like a cowboy does with cattle. The songs we used in this episode are "Get Along Little Dogies (Whoopee Ti-Yi-Yo)" by Woody Guthrie, "Are You Happy" by Primitive Radio Gods and "Make Someone Happy" by Jimmy Durante. We don't own any rights. We would also like to thank the talented James Kocian, for the use of his amazing songs "Head Boppin", and "Light As A Feather". On this episode of The Sales Gravy Podcast, Lucy Beth Adams sits down with Master Sales Trainer, Jessica Stokes to discuss her journey in sales, from her early days in cold calling to becoming a top trainer. She offers valuable insights on maintaining customer relationships, handling objections, and staying motivated in a challenging sales career. Key Takeaways: – Facing Rejection with Determination: Early sales careers can involve a lot of cold calling, rejection, and setbacks. However, having a competitive spirit can drive you to keep pushing, knowing that persistence will eventually pay off. – Self-Motivation and Rewards: Using personal rewards as motivation throughout your career and setting specific goals, such as a trip to Las Vegas, and continuing to find ways to reward yourself with commission-based incentives can help you reach your goals. – Building and Maintaining Relationships: Focus on nurturing customer relationships, both past and present. You can do this by using traditional methods, such as handwritten notes, to stand out and stay connected, along with maintaining a presence on LinkedIn. – Engaging Disengaged Learners: To connect with disengaged learners, it's effective to engage them directly, whether by calling on them in class or approaching them during breaks. Building rapport can help break down their defenses and encourage a more open attitude toward learning. – Preparation for Handling Objections: Sales professionals should anticipate common objections and prepare responses in advance, similar to bringing a study guide to an exam. This preparation helps maintain composure during uncomfortable moments and prevents rambling. – Recognizing Common Objections: The most common objections encountered by salespeople often include being "not interested," "too busy," and requests to "just send an email." Acknowledging these objections as knee-jerk reactions can help salespeople better handle them. – Persistence After Losing Deals: After losing a deal, it's crucial to maintain a positive mindset. Finding ways to uplift oneself, such as connecting with friends or engaging in enjoyable activities, can help restore motivation. Additionally, continuing to prospect for new opportunities is essential. – The Importance of Micro Commitments: Gaining micro commitments—small agreements to follow up or have another meeting—throughout the sales process can reduce the likelihood of being ghosted. This strategy fosters engagement and provides opportunities to understand why a deal was lost. – Time Blocking for Efficiency: Time blocking, a strategy learned from sales, is effective for managing tasks and maintaining focus. By dedicating specific time slots to activities without multitasking, individuals can increase productivity in both professional and personal life. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AbwmDaaNm-Q Diverse Life Experiences Diverse experiences before entering sales can provide valuable perspectives. Serving in the military, for example, instills discipline and a sense of adventure, both of which are beneficial in a sales career. Transitioning through different industries, such as hospitality, also helps build resilience and adaptability—traits essential for success in sales. Overcoming Early Challenges Cold calling is one of the toughest aspects of starting in sales. Rejection is common, but embracing a competitive spirit and focusing on the long-term goals can push through these hurdles. The key takeaway is that perseverance, even in the face of frequent setbacks, is essential to achieving sales success. Changing Perceptions of Sales Sales is often misunderstood and mischaracterized. Initially, there may be hesitancy to fully embrace the role of a salesperson due to negative stereotypes. However, direct experience in the field reveals that sales is not about being pushy or gimmicky, but about solving problems and building trust.

In this episode, Krish Palaniappan discusses the essential elements of entrepreneurship, drawing from personal experiences at Snowpal. He emphasizes the importance of patience, identifying real problems to solve, building a supportive network, and the need for self-motivation. The conversation also touches on the long-term commitment required in business, the significance of having expertise in your chosen field, and the critical nature of sales skills. Krish warns against the pitfalls of building products just because one can, urging entrepreneurs to focus on meaningful solutions. Takeaways Patience is crucial in building a business. Identify a real problem that needs solving. A strong support system is essential for success. Expect to invest more time for less immediate pay. Money should not be the primary motivator. Self-motivation is key to overcoming challenges. Entrepreneurship may not be for everyone. Your business should align with your expertise. Be prepared for a long-term commitment.
