pWotD Episode 2455: Shoaib Malik Welcome to popular Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of a popular Wikipedia page every day. With 275,171 views on Sunday, 21 January 2024 our article of the day is Shoaib Malik.Shoaib Malik (pronounced [ʃoeːb məlɪk]; born 1 February 1982) is a Pakistani cricketer who plays for the Pakistan national cricket team and currently plays for Karachi Kings in the Pakistan Super League (PSL). He was the captain of the Pakistan national cricket team from 2007 to 2009. He made his One-Day International debut in 1999 against the West Indies and his Test debut in 2001 against Bangladesh. On 3 November 2015, Malik announced his retirement from Test cricket to focus on the 2019 Cricket World Cup. On 2 July 2018, he became the first male cricketer to play 100 T20Is. On 5 July 2019, he announced his retirement from One Day International Cricket after Pakistan won their last group stage game against Bangladesh at Lord's at the 2019 Cricket World Cup. Malik was a member of the Pakistan team that won the 2009 ICC World Twenty20.He has taken over 150 ODI wickets and has a batting average in the mid-30s in both Test and ODI cricket. His bowling action has come under scrutiny (particularly his doosra), but he has had elbow surgery to correct that. Malik was ranked second, behind teammate Shahid Afridi, in the ICC ODI all-rounder rankings in June 2008. In March 2010, Malik received a one-year ban from international cricket from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB); the ban was overturned two months later. Malik was captain of the now defunct Sialkot Stallions and led them to a domestic record eight domestic T20 titles, with the last one coming in 2015. On 13 September 2017, Malik became the highest run–scorer in T20I for Pakistan. He made 126 runs against India in the 2009 ICC Champions Trophy. In April 2018, he was named as the captain of Punjab's squad for the 2018 Pakistan Cup. On 1 July 2018, Malik also became the first Asian batsman to score 2,000 runs in T20Is, the third overall, and first player to play 100 T20Is in the world. In August 2018, during the 2018 Caribbean Premier League tournament, he became the fourth batsman to score 8,000 runs in T20s. On 10 October 2020, in the 2020–21 National T20 Cup, Shoaib Malik became the first Pakistani batsman to score 10,000 runs in Twenty20 cricket, doing so in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's match against Balochistan. In February 2023, while playing for the Rangpur Riders in the 2022–23 Bangladesh Premier League, he became the third cricketer (after Kieron Pollard and Dwayne Bravo from the West Indies) and the first Pakistani to play 500 T20 matches. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:47 UTC on Monday, 22 January 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Shoaib Malik on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Niamh Neural.

Test match cricket is considered the hardest format of the game, and rightly so. It's a game that requires a lot of skill, patience, concentration, determination, and numerous other challenges are to be tackled over 5 days. Some of the brightest talents in the game have shown glimpses but failed to showcase their true potential in this format due to various reasons. Some of the categories of players include- Playing in the wrong era when the team was stacked with legends of the game Being injured too often Performed well in ODIs, but couldn't replicate in tests Players being mismanaged by boards Disciplinary issues or mental issues holding them back Players who took up Kolpak deals Players playing in the smaller sides that don't play too much test cricket In this episode, my guest speaker, Venkatesh and I, discuss some of the most talented cricketers who couldn't quite fulfill their potential in test cricket. Ryan Harris is largely regarded by his peers and fans as one of the hardest working Cricketers on the international circuit. A career cut short by major injury, Ryan now a champion of positivity, gratitude, and inspiration to others. In this raw and unedited interview, Ryan shares how he felt when his biggest fan and mother passed away, right on the cusp of his selection into the Australian Cricket Team. Ryan was also kind enough to let us in on some world-class outswing bowling techniques.Ryan tells an extraordinary story and we were very privileged to hear it.From a career perspective, Ryan took six wickets on Test debut in 2010, Harris's injury-plagued body meant he was restricted to just 12 Tests in the following two years. But when he finally got some luck on the injury front for the 2013 Ashes tour of the UK, Harris's true class was allowed to shine through. He took 24 wickets in four Tests in England before picking up another 22 scalps in the return series in Australia. Then came arguably his finest moment when he steered Australia to a famous series win in South Africa with a seven-wicket haul in Cape Town. With his battered right knee in desperate need of intensive surgery, a wounded Harris produced one last heroic effort to bowl Australia to victory with just 27 balls to spare. Ryan Harris played with the Southern Redbacks from 2001–02 to 2007–08. Harris was a part of the Deccan Chargers squad that won the IPL in 2009 in South Africa. In late 2008, he was signed to an Indian Premier League contract with the Deccan Chargers, who are coached by his former Redbacks teammate Darren Lehmann. Having been selected for the Australian Twenty-20 team in early 2009, he was directly signed as an "uncapped" player by the Deccan Chargers, at the behest of Lehmann, without having to go through the standard IPL player auction process. Harris made his international debut in a One Day International against South Africa in Hobart on 18 January 2009, during which he took the wicket of Neil McKenzie in a spell of 1/54. Nevertheless, he was not selected for another ODI for over a year. on 26 January 2010, Harris was called up into the Australian squad for the 3rd ODI against Pakistan at the Adelaide Oval as cover for Peter Siddle, who was ruled out due to a back injury. Although not required to bat, Harris opened the bowling with Doug Bollinger and took 5/43, including the wickets of Kamran Akmal and Shahid Afridi. He claimed man of the match honours and was picked for the 4th and 5th ODIs against Pakistan. In the next match in that series, Harris claimed 5/19, a second consecutive five-wicket haul, behind only following Waqar Younis' three consecutive five-fors. Harris was named the man of the series after securing another three wickets in the fifth and final match, taking his tally to 13 wickets in three matches, at an average of 8.15 and strike rate of 13.7.  In March 2010, Harris was called up to the Australian squad for the first time, for the Test series in New Zealand. He made his Test debut in the first game, taking 2/42 and 4/77.Ryan lives in Brisbane, Australia with his beautiful wife Cherie and two children.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/labanditchburn?fan_landing=true)

It was a year when everything came together... until it fell spectacularly apart. There was something magical about Pakistan in 1999... till they time they crumbled. For a generation of Pakistan fans, the year 1999 meant much. Shoaib Akhtar emerged as a force of nature. Shahid Afridi provided a glimpse of his otherworldly powers. Wasim Akram was poised to turn into leader of the stature of Imran Khan. Saqlain Mushtaq spun a web around the world's best. Saeed Anwar scaled new heights. Abdul Razzaq was one of the most versatile cricketers around. The team won two Tests in India. They claimed the Asian Test Championship. They won ODI tournaments for fun. They reached the World Cup final. And they had the team to challenge that great Australian side. They were pounded in the World Cup final. They lost the Test series in Australia 3-0. The team were never the same again. And for many fans, it spelt a loss of innocence. Ahmer Naqvi (@karachikhatmal) and Hassan Cheema (@mediagag) were two such fans. Cricket and fantasy cricket league are always promoted as gentlemen game; however, it has not always been mild if we retrospect its long history. We have seen numerous examples where cricketers crossed their limitations getting involved in the dispute and fight off and on the field. Short-tempered, attacking and not the ones to take digs in the proper spirit, they split up the men from the gentlemen. In this post, we are not likely to discuss fantasy cricket players who were aggressive but stayed perfectly within the spirit of the game. Additionally, we are not going to speak about players who got involved with only one notorious incident. This is an imaginary list of 3 fantasy games players and has some of the finest names in the cricket history, who repeatedly had to deal with their outburst related issues during their career. Gautam Gambhir The Delhi-born opening batsman is consistently regarded as a player who wears his heart on his sleeves. Gambhir was linked to multiple controversies in his illustrious cricket career. Gambhir had a heated feud with his Delhi coach, Bhaskar Pillai, at the Vijay Hazare Trophy in Bhubaneswar in 2017. He was presented with a four-match suspension from first-class cricket for his impolite action. He was also involved in a notorious conflict with Virat Kohli in an IPL game between KKR and RCB in 2016 that lifted too many eyebrows about his outburst issues. The former Indian cricketer was also linked to a giant fight with Shahid Afridi in 2007 at an ODI in Kanpur. David Warner David Warner, who is at present serving a ban for his link in ball-tampering issue, has become involved with more than eight on and off-field issues in his cricket career. Warner’s outburst got the better of him in Twitter when he blasted Tasmanian fast bowler, Brett Geeves, with a rant of tweets. He was suspended by Australia for apparently punching Joe Root at a club after a Champions Trophy match in 2013. He was even associated with on-field incidents with players such as Jonathan Trot, Thami Tsolekile, Quinton de Kock and Varun Aaron prior he got trapped in the notorious sand-paper scandal. Virat Kohli Virat Kohli, the well-known aggressive batsman and skipper of team India, is famous for controversies. His unpredictable behavior off and on the field gained a lot of criticisms worldwide. Though he has suppressed down his anger off-late, he is even now pocket dynamite that could explode any moment. Kohli exhibited his finger to the Syndey crowd after they kept on insulting him and the team at the time of India’s trip to Australia in 2012. After that, during India’s practice session at Australia in 2015, the Indian captain needlessly shouted with violent words at a reporter for writing about his bond with Anushka Sharma. He also got involved with Gautam Gambir on an unpleasant spat at the IPL game in 2016. His problems with Anil Kumble led to the Indian legend resigning from the post of Indian cricket team coach. Hi! To explain myself, right of the bat, I wouldn’t say that I’m a man of many words, but of many voices! In essence, I am Harsh Joshi, and I can do wonders with my voice. They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and simply put, I’m an admirer of voices, their nuances, and characters that lies within. I take pride in myself for being a mimicry artist. I love to bring smiles to people’s faces by bringing a totally different person into the picture. Being a mimicry artist, I can bring in the voices of the celebs that you love. Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Hrithik Roshan, you name it, I can do it! And the list doesn’t end there! In addition to the evergreen Bollywood heroes, I can mimic Sunny Deol, Nana Patekar, Sunil Shetty, Ajay Devgan, Abhay Deol, Irfan Khan, Ranbir Kapoor, Fardeen Khan, and Imran Khan. Cranking my skills up a notch, I can mimic the lovely voices of Sonu Nigam, Anu Malik, Himesh Reshammiya, Arijit Singh, Kumar Sanu, Kailash Kher, Hari Haran, Adnan Sami, Farhan Akhtar, Lucky Ali, A R Rehman, and Shaan. If you love to see your favorite politicians cracking up some jokes, you are in for a treat! My repertoire includes Narendra Modi, Arvind Kejriwal, Yogi Adityanath, Amit Shah, and L.K.Advani. As Indians, Cricket flows through our veins. My love for cricket and the admiration for the best, I taught myself to mimic the voices of Sachin Tendulkar, M.S.Dhoni, Shahid Afridi, Inzamam-ul-Haq, Shahid Afridi, and Imran Khan. I like to give a sense of character to the words I speak, and it has helped me a great deal in my voice over projects. The challenges are plenty for a voice-over artist and understanding them is the first step towards modeling yourself to fit in better with the trade. As a responsible voice-over artist, I take meticulous care to understand the context and overall feel of what the director wants from me. I am also aware of that fact that timing is critical for any voice over project, and I have trained myself to match my tempo with various movement speeds to get the perfect result. Voice modulation abilities always add a layer of realism to the voice that is being used on a video clip, and it always makes sure to get the work done well. It helps a great deal while recording for cartoons, movie trailers, radio commercials, telephone and video games. A positive approach is best for this business, that spawns over internet, documentaries, educational and audiobooks. The devil is in the details and knowing the right kind of modulation for the right type of application, makes the whole project a success. I am well versed in a variety of voice over services like commercials, E-Learning, Podcasts, Audio Books, Dubbing, Cartoons, Narrations, explainer Videos and the lot! As I mentioned before, I love to instill a sense of character to the work that I do. It was never a straight drive to perfection. I have made mistakes along the way, but I also took the time to learn from them. Personally, I believe having the quirks of being a mimicry artist has helped me a great in being an active voice-over artist. When I was first asked to take-up anchoring, it was a frightening moment. Being a mimicry artist, I never had a problem facing the crowd, but an anchor needs a specific set of skills, and quick wit is one of them. But once I was made a primary anchor, it was one of the most enjoyable experience I had on stage. I learned to embrace the spontaneity and the flexibility that comes with being an anchor. The most amazing part of being an anchor is undoubtedly the communication that I get with the audience. Humor always helps me to entice the audience, making them feel at ease and helping them have a good time!
