The former Prime Minister of Syria has agreed to hand over power to the Islamist rebel group HTS after it toppled Bashar al Assad's regime. Russian state media is reporting Bashar al Assad is in Moscow, where he's been granted asylum. However, there is concern among the international community that change doesn't guarantee peace. HTS is currently a banned terror organisation in a number of countries. But the leader of the main Syrian opposition armed group that seized Damascus, Abu Mohammed al-Jolani, says the Syrian people are the “rightful owners” of the country. To discuss this further, Alan Morrissey was joined by Neil Robinson, Professor of Comparative Politics at the University of Limerick. In this week's episode we meet the Head of Heritage and Collections at the MCC, Neil Robinson. We begin by talking about how, where and when Neil began his affiliation with the game of cricket.  Specifically, it was the 1981 Ashes and Bob Willis' phenomenal last day performance in the Headingley Test.Yorkshire was the nearest first class county to him in the North East so he became a fan of the club.  He has followed Durham's progression as a first class county.Neil then tells us a little bit about his journey to the position that he currently holds.  From an initial period as a library student in 2004 he managed to get a permanent job in 2006.  He became the Head of Heritage and Collections in 2019.The Museum is not as old as the Lords cricket ground.  In fact, it was officially opened in 1953 but the collections do go back much further.  Neil outlines the details of how the museum and collections have grown over the past 150 years.Neil outlines what has happened to the museum in the time he has been there.  Principally, this has been the development of a proper cataloguing system so that museum staff and those researching aspects of the game can search and find material they can use to tell the story of the game of cricket through the work of this hugely influential institution.  He then gives us a brief 'virtual' guide to the museum itself.Recent developments in cricket have led some to question the equality and diversity in the history of the game.  Neil describes the way in which the museum's approach to telling cricket history has thrown a light on some of the issues raised in the ICEC Report of 2023.To finish the episode, Neil talks about some of the items in the collection that he regards as significant and important finishing with the story of the Ashes urn.The museum website, where you can find details of how you can visit the museum and / or use it for research:https://www.lords.org/lords/conferences-and-events/museumFor those who are interested in learning a little more about Neil and his work, you can read a transcribed interview with him here:https://www.cricketcountry.com/articles/interview-neil-robinson-the-library-and-research-manager-at-lords-293870/Back in 2020 during lock-down, Neil was a guest on the wonderful Oborne and Heller on Cricket Podcast.  To listen, go here:https://chiswickcalendar.co.uk/episode-22-talking-with-mccs-head-of-heritage-and-collections-neil-robinson/

Neil Robinson Finds His Personal Dream Neil Robinson is todays guest on the Steve Jobs inspired Join Up Dots podcast. Neil first connected with us a few years ago after listening to the show and at that time he was running his own domestic cleaning business. As you can imagine he was making appointments, turning up and his time wasn't his own. But that was going to change as he is an entrepreneur at heart and unlike so many people across the world, can see the opportunities that lie all around us better than most. So alongside the cleaning business he then moved onto building a website design business called the furry frog, which was focused on design, SEO and optimisation. He would build an maintain websites for a monthly subscription allowing his clients to do the things that they do better and leading the technical struggles to him. How The Dots Joined Up For Neil This has now pivoted to a Google Ads PPC consultancy business, which as we will discuss on the show has removed a lot of the hassles from the previous incarnation of the business. But how do you take all these income producing elements and then move into a caravan, become mobile, start two new business and appear on an episode of Join Up Dots whilst sitting in Thailand? Well today is when we find out? So is the issue of starting businesses and gaining life freedom more to do with mindset and belief than technical experience?  And looking back at the changes in his life what would he say was the one that really started the ball rolling? Well lets find out as we bring onto the show to start joining up dots with the one and only Mr Neil Robinson.

On this episode of the Stolen Goodbyes podcast, Karen speaks to Neil Robinson from Durham who lost his ‘whirlwind’ partner Susan Porter to COVID-19 on May 1 2020. She was 58. Neil talks about some of the favourite memories he shared with Susan from as early as their teenager years to a chance encounter a decade later that resulted in them reuniting for 30 years. Neil struggles with emotion as he describes how Susan fell ill and was hospitalised with Covid 19. Her condition improved for a time before she took a turn for the worse. Neil’s voice breaks as he tells how Susan thought she was going to die and how they had to discuss her final wishes. Neil wanted to be with Susan at the end but a nurse held her hand as she passed. Neil watched through a hospital ward window as she slipped away. In their last conversation, Susan told Neil: "I love you, I’ll beat this and I’ll see you on the other side (of the illness)." Neil Robinson is the MCC's Head of Collections and Heritage at Lord's. He is responsible for one of the world's greatest collections of sporting art, artefacts, and memorabilia, as well as a constantly expanding Library of over 20,000 books and complete collections of journals, many rare, as well as the MCC Archive, a treasure trove for historians and not only of cricket. Previously the MCC's Librarian and head of research, he has given unstinting help to thousands of writers on cricket. He is the  guest of Peter Oborne and Richard Heller in their latest cricket-themed podcast. Neil describes the scope of the collections (up to 5,000 works of art or artefacts, hundreds of thousands of photographs) and its nineteenth-century origins, especially the efforts of Sir Spencer Ponsonby-Fane, an MCC grandee associated with the club for no fewer than 75 years. The oldest photos show the first English overseas cricket tour, of the USA and Canada, in 1859 as well as the sheep used to crop the field before the lawnmower was invented in the 1860s. Two other historic photographs show the English playing cricket in Yokahama, Japan, in 1863: amid great tension, the sides carried weapons on the field to defend themselves from expected attack by samurai. Neil also mentions the first English cricket tour of Australia in 1863 – as a late substitute for a cancelled tour by Charles Dickens (a cricket fan).He describes the restoration at the Natural History Museum of one of the most popular artefacts – the sparrow killed in mid-flight by a ball from Jehangir Khan (father of Pakistan's Majid Khan). The gender of the bird has finally been established.Neil describes the efforts to build up the audio archive of over 200 cricketing interviews, to make the collections, especially the portraits, more representative of non-English countries and of women, and to put more of the collections online, a priority heightened by the temporary shutdown of the Lord's Museum and the ending of tours. The collections are to be reviewed in the light of current concerns over associations with slavery and colonial oppression. Neil reveals the amazing Victorian romance hidden in the Ashes urn – and his own remarkable experiences in transporting it to Australia as part of a (non-cricketing) exhibition. He describes the creation of his own cricket book -  Long Shot Summer  - the history of England's deeply troubled Test match year of 1988. Finally, Neil describes some of the vital historic materials in the MCC Archive, especially records of all the England tours organized by MCC as late as 1968. He explains the gaps caused by the haphazard way records were preserved before the Archive was begun in 2006.

A follow-up interview with Neil Robinson of Nausea, Squat or Rot, Tribal War Records, Final Warning, Jesus Chrust, ABC NO RIO, and the Farmageddon Growers’ Collective. I first interviewed Neil in the summer of 2015. That interview appears in the main body of interviews on the LOUD! FAST! PHILLY! website and in all the other places it’s been posted to through the Cinepunx podcast network. While I was in Portland, Oregon (and surrounding environs) in mid-October, 2017, I paid a call on Neil to catch up a bit. After we shared a meal at Pappa G.’s, a vegan deli, I recorded this follow-up interview in his truck. Because follow-up interviews are not part of the interview series proper, it’s not considered a full interview. On the L!F!P! site this appears in the blog section. We had a terrific talk (as I hope you’ll soon hear) about Neil’s life in the two+ years since our full interview and the state of the world today. The post LOUD! FAST! PHILLY! Joseph A. Gervasi interviews the photographer Cynthia Connolly. We talk about Cynthia growing up in Los Angeles, CA and being drawn into the early punk scene. Cynthia and her sister wind up moving to Washington, DC in the early ’80s. There Cynthia become an active participant in the burgeoning hardcore punk scene. Cynthia designed the iconic “Out of Step” 12″ cover for Minor Threat. In the late ’80s she compiled, contributed photos to, and published the essential “Banned In DC” book, which she’s kept in print under her own imprint since then. We discuss the role of women in punk in contrast to the world of rock that preceded it, the bootlegging of her sheep art, working for MaximumRockNRoll magazine, the infamous SOA/Black Flag riot at the Starlight Ballroom in Philadelphia, and much more. It should be noted that, as I state at the start of the interview, Cynthia is not a “Philly person,” and thus may seem to fall out of the scope of this project. Like some others I’ve spoken to for L!F!P! (e.g. Martin Sprouse [who comes up a few times in this interview], Mark Anderson, Neil Robinson, etc), I’ve elected to include these individuals in part because I feel their achievements have influenced the artistic/creative endeavors of Philadelphia folks (including me) and in part because I find them to be fascinating and inspiring individuals. Joseph A. Gervasi interviews Neil Robinson of the bands Nausea, Slaughter, Warning, Final Warning, and Jesus Crust. Neil co-founded Squat or Rot and ran the Tribal War label and distro. He was also active in ABC NO RIO. Neil is now one of the founding members of the Farmageddon Growers’ Collective in Oregon/Washington. Neil and I spoke in his hand-made and electricity-less shack on the Farmageddon property just outside Portland, Oregon after a tour of the (very impressive) veganic farm. This is a long interview, every minute of which is well worth listening to. Neil recounts his life from growing up in and around London in a working class (and later middle class) family. Neil was taken by punk from its frenzied emergence from the muck of feel-good ’70s music. Soon Neil was immersed in the thriving anarcho-punk scene in London. (When he mentions some of the amazing bands he saw at that time, you will weep in jealousy.) We discuss Neil’s move to New York City and his immediate love affair with the Lower East Side and its thriving scene. Neil is frank about his involvement in the drug scene. Our talk ranges through squatting; the formation of the seminal crustcore band Nausea; starting Squat or Rot; dealing with skinheads in the ’80s NYHC scene; why he left Nausea; his other bands; and the long-running label/distro, Tribal War. We dig into Neil’s eventual disillusionment with NYC (part of it involves a pit bull biting off a girl’s nose) and moving to Portland, Oregon. In Oregon he was involved with some social/political/environmental activist organizations (one of which distributed communiques for E.L.F., the Earth Liberation Front, a domestic environmental terrorist organization). Neil’s involvement put him and his fellow activists under some serious scrutiny. We discuss the creation of and ideas behind the Farmageddon Growers’ Collective, which takes a radical approach to organic, ethical farming. This is an interview filled with colorful stories, a lot of history of the NYC hardcore punk and squatting worlds, and Neil’s thoughtfulness and good humor. Please note: As with a few other interviews I’ve conducted for this project (e.g. Martin Sprouse and Mark Anderson), Neil is not a Philadelphia person (though he played here with some of his bands and knows many fine Philly folks). I elected to interview Neil because all of his projects have had lasting influence on punks around the world (including me and many people I know). My own curiosity to meet the man himself coupled with the opportunity to do so when I was in Portland, Oregon to visit my friends Kathie and Jason led to this interview. I’m delighted to have Neil Robinson add his voice to this project. Farmageddon Growers’ Collective Facebook Page Neil Robinson’s Facebook Page The post LOUD! FAST! PHILLY!
