Jamar Nicholas is one of those people who simply radiates good will and good vibes. His varied career in comics has taken many shapes over the years; writer, artist, creator, teacher, administrator, he's worn many hats. But also, that one hat. Here's my chat with my dear friend, Jamar. And also listen for Doug's impassioned plea for more of the artist's Detective Boogaloo: Hip Hop Cop! Not even a little cringey, Doug. A question that can only be answered in West Philadelphia Story. This week Alex and Chris speak with award-winning Philadelphia-based artist Jamar Nicholas. Jamar is the triple threat creator/writer/illustrator of LEON THE EXTRAORDINARY, (published by Scholastic Press). He's also an educator who dedicated his career to helping young people realize the power of the visual narrative. In an often gripping interview, we all dive deep into hard, urban truths, and the stubbornness of the creative spirit, in hopes of inspiring others to keep going, even when it gets rough, and when everyone else is telling you no you can't. Jamar Nicholas is in the house! And we couldn't be happier to have him. Creator of the hit kids' graphic novel, Leon: Protector of the Playground, Jamar kickstarted his cartooning career in 1997 with the self-published Jamar Chronicles. Following his creation of the webcomic Detective Boogaloo: Hip-Hop Cop, Jamar became an editorial cartoonist for the Philadelphia Tribune. His most acclaimed work may be his graphic novel adaptation of Geoffrey Canada's memoir Fist, Stick, Knife, Gun, which won several awards. Now, through a partnership with Scholastic, Leon is getting his own new series of graphic novels, starting with Leon the Extraordinary next week. All that, and he also teaches! You can follow Jamar on Twitter @jamarnicholas and on Instagram @jamar_nicholas_cartoonist. And you should go buy Leon the Extraordinary on October 4! _______________________________If you liked this podcast, please rate, review, and subscribe on Apple Podcasts. or "What's so funny about peace, love, and diversity?" In this special team-up episode of Graphic Novelism, the experts on nothing real welcome their very first guest, multiple award-winning writer and artist Jamar Nicholas! They talk about the importance of comic books in a child's life, the distressing decline of all-ages books in today's adult-slanted market, reclaiming that missing balance, and how Jamar is doing his own part at curbing this harmful trend with his creator-owned title, "Leon, Protector Of The Playground"! Just why is a medium designed to make children happy turning it’s back on them? How important is it for kids to see heroes that look like them? And who IS the mysterious Japanese man living in Jamar’s computer? To find out, well, you'll just have to listen! This episode I’m talking with the great cartoonist, teacher and Philly native Jamar Nicholas.
We met Jamar Nicholas at NYC Comic Con. We were both taken in by his fantastic adaptation of Geoffrey Canada's book Fist Stick Knife Gun. We spoke with Jamar from his home in Philadelphia, where he's originally from. We talked about his great graphic novel, his love of comic strips, difficulties of urban inner city life and his upcoming book, Leon. Don't miss it! Original music by Adam Bernstein.
Jamar Nicholas wears a number of hats, as do many artists. He's a teacher -- he teaches narrative storywriting at Drexel and has taught at Moore College of Art and Design and Arcadia University; he is Fine Arts Curatorial and Administrative Assistant at Arcadia University Art Gallery, and he makes his art -- drawings of narratives that become comic books about superheroes, like the Hip Hop Cop Detective Boogaloo, which ran -- daily -- in the Philadelphia Metro in 2015.
