Click here to send me a quick message :) We're all navigating so much right now. Collectively, relationally, personally. This week's episode explores three different frames for understanding and tending your nervous system when it's stretched, strained, burnt out or plain dysregulated. In addition to the collective unrest so many of us are feeling, this week I learned about the loss of John Gallagher (founder of Learning Herbs). What has struck me most about the loss (aside from honoring his immense legacy in modern herbalism) was that he was struggling. With insomnia, anxiety, and depression. And that the current political climate, including the potential for immense ecological loss, was part of what may have tipped his mental health struggles over the edge. It's just so big, all of it. And so many of us are feeling it.And whatever we're struggling with - collectively, relationally, personally - we're all navigating something right now. I want to acknowledge that, rather than gloss over it, and offer some resources and tools that may perhaps be useful for you in these tumultuous times. We all have to find our way, and we don't have to do it alone. Which reminds me of Alexandra Blakely's song:"you do not carry this all aloneno you do not carry this all alonethis is way too big for youto carry this on your ownso, you do not carry this all alone"It's not a song, or an herb, or a practice that will heal us. It's a collective practice that is ongoing. But if you're interested in some powerful ways to tend your nervous system in these times, listen to the wisdom from Efan Hsieh, Kristen Timchak and myself in this week's medley episode for some inspiration.** dedicating this episode to the memory of John Gallagher **Resources:Grab the free guide: Track your cycle with FAM (and symptom tracking)Today's shownotes: 3 paths to nervous system tending in tumultuous timesEpisode 41: How nature connection can calm burnout w Efan HsiehEpisode 50: Adaptogens + hormonal healthEpisode 97: Nourish your nervous system with Ayurveda w Kristen TimchakIf you loved this episode, share it with a friend, or take a screenshot and share on social media and tag me @herbalwombwisdomAnd if you love this podcast, leave a rating & write a review! In this very special replay of The Herbalist Hour Episode 50, I sit down with John Gallagher — co-founder of LearningHerbs and a beloved member of the herbal community who recently passed away after a long struggle with depression, anxiety, and insomnia. This episode means the world to me. If you've followed HerbRally for a while, you've probably heard me talk about how much John influenced my herbal journey. His podcast, HerbMentor Radio, was my introduction to the wider herbal world. I devoured every episode — over and over again. Through those interviews, I felt like I knew the herbalists he featured. And John was the thread running through it all — full of curiosity, warmth, humor, and a contagious laugh. Eventually I became an HerbMentor member (still am to this day), and a few years later, John actually became a friend. I'll never forget him visiting the Mountain Rose Herbs marketing department when I worked there — he brought so much joyful energy with him. And at RootStalk, the legendary one-time herbal gathering, I feel like our friendship really took root. It was also there that I learned John wasn't quite as squeaky clean off-mic as he was on his show — turns out he loved to swear, just like me! That only made me love him more. Over the years, I got to know him better through shared time at events, visits to his home in Port Townsend, chats on the phone, and eventually, this very conversation on The Herbalist Hour. Recording this episode felt like a full-circle moment. I finally got to sit down and interview someone who helped shape my path in herbalism — not just as a mentor from afar, but as a real friend. Everyone I know who knew John adored him. He lit up every room. And he gave so much to this community. My heart goes out to Kimberly, their children, his family, and everyone who loved him. John — I love you, buddy. Thank you for being there during some rough times. Thank you for your support of HerbRally. And thank you for helping open up the herbal world to me, and to so many others. You'll be deeply missed. ~Mason Prefer to watch the video version? You can find it on YouTube here | Watch on YouTube P.S. Mo Salah's goal broke yet another record and ensured the Reds avoided defeat on the day they were presented with the Premier League title. 35 years ago it was Alan Hansen lifting the trophy, but this time it was Jocky presenting the trophy to fellow iconic skipper and centre half, Virgil Van Dijk. TLW Editor Dave Usher is joined by John Gallagher and Dan Thomas to look back on a memorable afternoon at Anfield where - result apart - everything went as well as it could have done, even for Trent.
A Note for Jacob: Since my second podcast recording with Matt, I am pleased to report that General Admission Seating for the May 5 event is SOLD OUT!! It is a pleasure to welcome actor Matt DeAngelis back to The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast. Originally from Boston, Massachusetts, Matt grew up on showtunes and Boston sports. Matt studied theatre at the University of Southern Maine and The Boston Conservatory before heading down Route 95 to NYC in 2004. In June 2009, Matt got the call to make his Broadway debut in the Tony-winning production of HAIR with Tony Award winner Diane Paulus at the helm. Matt continued with that production, “Across the Atlantic Sea,” to the West End in the role of “Woof” and then launched the first national US Tour of HAIR and was seen back on Broadway in the “Summer of Love” revival of HAIR.Following his time with the hippies, Matt launched the first national tour of Green Day's AMERICAN IDIOT as the “Representative from Jingletown”. Matt's cross-country adventures continued in 2014 with the first national tour of ONCE, where he played “Svec” and five instruments. Over the last five years, Matt has been a veteran of almost 2,000 performances. Thankfully, Matt returned home to Broadway (again with Diane Paulus) in the hit musical WAITRESS, where he starred opposite Tony Award winner Jessie Mueller, two-time Grammy winner Jason Mraz, and seven-time Grammy nominee and the show's composer, Sara Bareilles. He then toured the country with the WAITRESS National Tour as Earl opposite his real-life wife, Christine Dwyer, as Jenna. Upon returning from the road, Matt was a part of developing the World Premiere of The Secret Life of Bees at The Atlantic Theatre Company, directed by Tony Award winner Sam Gold. He also appeared in Orpheus Descending at Theatre for a New Audience. Matt DeAngelis also started the Janice Jam in memory of his mother, Janice, who passed from metastatic breast cancer in 2022. This annual event channels the magic of Broadway to honor those we've lost, uplift those fighting, and fund critical research. This event serves as a yearly celebration of Janice, her love for theater, and raising money for those affected by metastatic breast cancer. On May 5, 2025, a group of Broadway all-stars will join Matt and Christine for this event. Golden Globe and Oscar-winning actor Ariana DeBose, Tony winner John Gallagher, Jr., Tony-nominated actors Jeremy Jordan and Jenn Colella, Caroline Bowman, Kara Lindsay, Krysta Rodriguez, Omar Jose Cardona, Rachel Potter, and Stark Sands are expected to perform. On this episode of The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast, Matt DeAngelis previewed the 2025 Janice Jam, revealed this year's music director, and explained how you can support the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Ep 534: John Gallagher of Raven joins the show to talk about the band's brand-new album, their monumental 50th anniversary, and how he continues to keep his iconic voice in top shape while staying active on the road. Raven, known as one of the pioneers of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM), remains a force to be reckoned with in the world of heavy music, and John's passion for the band's legacy and future is stronger than ever. Raven was formed in 1974 by John and his brother Mark Gallagher in Newcastle, England. The band quickly gained a reputation for their energetic performances and raw, high-octane sound, which blended the heaviness of metal with the speed and aggression that would later influence the thrash metal movement. Albums like Rock Until You Drop and Wiped Out became instant classics, cementing Raven as trailblazers in the metal scene. The Gallagher brothers' chemistry, combined with their explosive live shows, earned them the nickname “the Godfathers of Thrash.” In this episode, John reflects on the band's incredible journey over five decades, including their rise to fame, the challenges of staying relevant through changing trends, and their commitment to evolving while honoring their roots. He shares insights into their latest album, which showcases their signature sound with fresh energy and creativity. John also opens up about the physical demands of keeping his voice strong and how he and Mark continue to thrive on the relentless touring schedule that has defined their career. With Raven celebrating 50 years, John offers fans a behind-the-scenes look at the band's history, from the early days of struggling to book gigs to their influence on metal icons like Metallica and Slayer. Whether you're a lifelong fan or new to their music, this episode is packed with stories, wisdom, and plenty of inspiration from one of metal's most enduring figures. Kicking off 2025 with an interview with John Gallagher of Raven. They have a new EP coming out on February 14th. It features five new songs and three live tracks, all from different decades. He told me about the songs, and one he said is the heaviest song Raven has ever done. John also told me they're well into working on new music, so it sounds like they have a lot of material ready to go. We discussed their early tours, taking Metallica on the raid, the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, and the bands they influenced. As far as the NWOBHM was concerned, that era didn't last long, but it did produce some legendary bands. You can watch this interview on the RIFF TV section of wrif.com to see some of John's classic basses, as he pulled a couple of them out. It's a great way to kick off 2025 on Talkin' Rock!
